Police calls can turn deadly in an instant and these real cases prove it. Here are three shocking encounters that show how a simple stop can spiral into chaos and tragedy in seconds. An Illinois State Police Trooper stopped to assist a stranded vehicle, but the couple inside repeatedly gave him false names. After running their information through the database and finding inconsistencies, he grew suspicious and called for backup. >> reason to lie to us when we're just trying to help. The only thing I was trying to do is help. You guys could have been long down the road probably 15-20 minutes ago down the road if you would have just said, "Here's my ID, here's my ID." and been done, right? It would have solved so much. But you guys have >> No, he's going back back and forth. >> It it adds. >> It's not moving Yeah, moving forward >> It's Not all cops are bad, right? >> I've been very I Okay. >> Let me go check you real quick, Brandon. >> When the trooper finally pried their real names out of the couple, he ran them through the system again, only to discover exactly why they didn't want to be identified. Turns out this man, Brandon Griffin, had a nationwide arrest warrant for felony weapons charges. >> All right. Hey, Brandon. >> Hey, how you doing? >> All right. I'm going to have you turn around for a minute. All right. Turn No. >> going in cuffs. >> Brandon, we're not doing this. Listen to me, Brandon. We're done. WE'RE DONE. BRANDON. BRANDON. STOP. STOP. If you don't stop, I'm adding charges to you. You're going to get extra charges. Stop. All right, Brandon, we're done. We're done. Get your hands Stop. >> Go ahead and cuff >> resisting. >> Brandon? >> Christine, stay out of the car. >> Do it. >> Christine, stay out of the >> What are you doing? What are you >> Christine, stay out of the car. >> fighting me. We have bear spray. >> Christine, please step backwards. >> Stop. >> Stop. >> Please sit. >> I'm begging you. Please let me help you. >> Christine, please step back. Yes. >> Stop. Christine, listen to me. I need you to stop. Please back up for me. >> I'm begging you. >> Back up for me. >> Please, I'm begging you. >> Stop. >> Don't do that. >> Christine, >> I can't. >> We're going to die. >> No, you're not. Christine, >> going to die. They're trying to kill us. >> They tried to kill us in there. >> 2 coin X >> Please, don't. Please. >> 2 coin X 83, send additional. >> Please, don't. You're going to have to bear spray me. >> While troopers struggled to restrain Brandon, it became clear that the couple was trapped in their own twisted reality and probably didn't fully understand what was happening. Brandon's [music] wife, Christine Santos, rushed into the vehicle and began searching for bear spray, adding yet another layer of stress for the troopers. >> Stop. Stop. Christine, get out of that car. Christine, you deal with her. >> Okay. >> Christine, back up. >> I was in the military. You're going to have to shoot me. I'm not going to fight. >> Realizing Brandon was too strong for them, one of the troopers pulled out the taser and shocked him twice. >> Stop doing it. >> Hey. >> Get him. >> ON THE GROUND. >> TASER, TASER. >> LET ME GO. LET GO. >> CHRISTINE, GET BACK. >> DON'T CUFF HIM. DON'T CUFF HIM. >> You hit me in the head. >> Christine, get back. >> CHRISTINE. >> STOP DOING >> OH, HE'S GOT A GUN. HE'S GOT A GUN. >> [screaming] >> BACK. 2 COIN X 83, SHOTS FIRED. Shots fired. SUSPECT >> [panting] >> OFFICER SHOT. OFFICER SHOT. Shots fired. Come on. Come on. Go. Go back. Go back. Get back. Get back behind my car. Good. >> According to the police, the shootout left one trooper with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Brandon Griffin, however, wasn't as fortunate. He died in the car from a gunshot wound. Christine Santos was arrested at the scene on a no bond warrant for violating bond in a firearm assault case where Brandon Griffin was her co-defendant. [music] Officers responded to an SUV swerving into oncoming traffic [music] and concerned drivers blocked it at an intersection. But when police arrived, >> [music] >> 24-year-old Sierra Hibbert broke free, triggering a dangerous chase. >> Come on. >> Blatantly striking two witnesses and a police cruiser, Sierra managed to drive a short [music] distance with at least one deflated tire before coming to a stop likely due to the traffic jam ahead. >> [screaming] >> You stay here. >> Yeah. >> This is not going to MAKE IT FAR. >> GO. >> GIVEN HOW BADLY DAMAGED her car was from her reckless driving, she only made it a short distance before officers, now with enough backup, boxed her in for good and pulled her out of the vehicle. But, the absolute craziest part of this case is still ahead. >> I got in car. Give me some help over here. >> I got you. Ma'am, the doors are locked. We got it. >> I know I'm buckled, sir. I know I'm buckled, sir. Sir. I didn't do anything. I didn't do anything. >> You just tried to kill 10 people. >> No, I didn't, I didn't, sir. >> Alex, what's wrong with you? >> SIR, STOP. >> [screaming] >> I DIDN'T DO IT. STOP. YOU KNOW WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? STOP. STOP. I DIDN'T I DIDN'T DO IT. >> IT WON'T FIT. >> YOU PROBABLY didn't notice, but some of the civilians from the beginning of the video followed the pursuit all the way here. The reason they were so worried is that they had previously noticed a toddler inside of Sierra's car. >> I did NOT DO IT. I DID NOT DO WHATEVER YOU GUYS are talking to me about. I DID NOT DO anything you guys are talking to me about. >> Ma'am, you just wrecked three police cars. And a COUPLE OF OTHERS. >> [laughter] >> WELL, I WOULD >> I didn't do anything, >> YES, YOU DID. YOU ALMOST KILLED THREE [ __ ] PEOPLE. >> What did I do? >> DON'T EVEN ASK. >> HOW? >> [screaming] >> HOW? >> YOU KILLED THREE PEOPLE. >> Put her in my car. >> Yeah. >> The bystanders, Tiffany and Brett Cox, knew they had to step in when they saw the child's [music] legs in the back seat. They played a crucial role in ensuring the suspect's arrest by blocking her escape until police arrived. Sierra Hibbert faced six counts of aggravated assault, one for each person and police vehicle she ran. On May 6th, 2021 in Casper, Wyoming, police pulled over a car for a suspected license plate violation. Unaware of what was about to unfold, they don't do it. Officers Andrew Lankowski and Jake Bigelow approached the vehicle. >> see your license and insurance, please? >> I don't have a license copy, but I do have a license, so. >> What's your name? Sorry, it's Shawn? And you got insurance? >> I'm not sure if >> Oh, is this your car? >> Yeah. >> And can you pull it up on your phone? Okay, do that and I'll be right back. >> As one of the officers returned to the cruiser, the car's owner, who was sitting in the passenger seat, saw an opportunity and tried to flee, but not everything went according to his plan. >> Hey. Come back here. What are you doing, man? >> No, I just got out of the car, dude. I ain't trying to do nothing. I'm getting out of the car. >> here. Stay here on the ground. Stay here on the ground. 248, send us a backup. Hey. >> Here's a look at what happened from the officer's Bigelow body cam. >> Hey, what's your name again, man? Shawn? >> Shawn. >> Can I talk to you real quick? If you hop out for me real fast. >> I'm not answering questions. I'd like >> That's fine. I just like you to hop out real quick for me. Okay, I'm still asking to hop out of the car though, Sean. Hey, so listen to me. Don't drive off. Don't drive off. Hey. Uh-uh. What are we doing? Don't drive Hey, what are you doing, man? Pull him back there. He's got Hey, HEY, DON'T DO IT. DON'T [ __ ] DO IT. I WILL SHOW ME YOUR HANDS RIGHT NOW. PUT YOUR [ __ ] hands up. Don't you [ __ ] do it. Don't you If you drive away WITH ME, I WILL [ __ ] KILL YOU. HEY, >> [screaming] >> HEY, I'M GOING TO [ __ ] SHOOT YOU. I'M GOING TO [ __ ] SHOOT YOU. I will [ __ ] SHOOT YOU. STOP. STOP THE [ __ ] CAR. I'M GOING TO [ __ ] SHOOT YOU RIGHT NOW. LAST DITCH. I'M GOING TO [ __ ] SHOOT YOU. SHOOT ME. I'M GOING TO [ __ ] SHOOT YOU. >> SHOOT ME THEN. >> WHAT ARE YOU DOING? >> I'M GOING. >> STOP THE [ __ ] CAR. >> Apart from reaching 70 mph while driving in the oncoming lane with Officer Bigelow inside, the driver suddenly reached into a backpack and pulled out a black object in a pistol-like grip, an object that later turned out to be a butane lighter shaped LIKE A FIREARM. >> NO. STOP REACHING. STOP REACHING. STOP REACHING. 329 SHOTS FIRED. 329 SHOTS FIRED. YOU WOULDN'T STOP, he kept reaching. Where's the other passenger at? No, I appreciate you doing that. He's been shot. We're trying to get him out of the car to start medical right now. Dude, I tried I waited so long. Like I [ __ ] man. I begged him to stop the car, he wouldn't stop. I was in it. I finally was like, he's going with me. I finally got it slammed into park and the car started skidding. And then he lunged into the back, he started reaching, he grabbed something. I don't know what it was he grabbed. I couldn't see his hand. He reached over to the other side. I told him I'm going to shoot you and finally I just I I think I shot him like three or four times. >> The suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Thomas Joseph Robert, was pronounced deceased during a search of the vehicle. A felony amount of methamphetamine and a BB gun were recovered. [music] The car's initial driver, who refused to be involved, was not charged. Officer Jake Bigelow was placed on administrative leave during the investigation, but was later cleared of any wrongdoing. What do you think?
