Central, we got shots fired. Central, we got shots fired. >> Central, we got a man with an AK-47. He's shooting at us. We're out. Violence can unfold without warning, turning ordinary days into moments that change lives forever. These are incidents where officers and civilians were thrust into chaos, facing unimaginable danger in seconds. Here are the three incidents that show how quickly everything can unravel. In July 2023, four Fargo police officers responded to a traffic crash completely unaware they were walking into an ambush. Central, we got shots fired. Central, we got shots fired. Central. We got a man with an AK-47. He's shooting at us. We're at Central. Shots fired. Shots fired. We got three officers down. Three officers down. Despite being shot multiple times, the shooter still refuses to give up, leaving the officer no choice but to unleash the rounds that finally bring him down. DROP THE GUN. DROP THE GUN. Drop the gun. Send the gun. >> He's the only one. >> He's the only one. The suspect, 37-year-old Muhammad Barakott, was captured on his own apartment surveillance cameras the night before the shooting, assembling a shotgun strapping on a tactical vest and loading his vehicle with rifles, minus 1,800 rounds of ammo, gas cans, and homemade explosives. According to investigators, he had been searching terms like mass shooting events and crowded area events pointing to a likely plan to attack a public gathering before ultimately ambushing police at a nearby crash scene instead. Critically wounded in the attack, officers Andrew Dudis and Tyler Hos survived along with a bystander caught in the line of fire. Sadly, 23-year-old officer Jake Wallen was among those who didn't survive. Officer Zach Robinson was the last standing officer at the scene and successfully took down the shooter. On May 1st, 2021, 62-year-old Bruce Pole went to the Ona Casino Complex in Ashwabanon, weeks after he'd been fired and after a co-orker had gone to court, accusing him of harassment and stalking. Investigators later said he'd also used GPS trackers to follow people from work. Pull walked into a busy part of the complex, pulled a handgun, and started shooting at employees, killing two men before moving outside. unit. >> What? >> All right, let's move. Let's go across. Come on. >> Let's go. Come on. Watch your corners, dude. Get ready. >> Bring on this. >> Yeah. >> Get your radio there. Now, >> as people ran out in panic, some officers pulled them aside to get quick details where the shots came from and which way the gunman went. Meanwhile, the first contact, officers pushed inside to hunt the shooter, and they didn't have to search long before they were on him. >> You guys got us? Yeah, I'm on the right. I got it. >> Let's go. Meet her. >> What side? >> Your side. >> While officers searched for the gunman inside, he walked out into the parking lot. A former coworker saw him and unable to contain his anger, after watching him kill, his friends rushed him bare-handed, only to be shot point blank in the face. Where are they? Toad. They're going north. Got one down. One down. Watch it. Put it down. Put it down. I got it. >> Grant. >> Okay. Are you guys good? >> I got >> after three officers shot him multiple times, Bruce Pole fell and died at the scene. Two other men, both his former co-workers, were found deceased inside. The ex-coorker he shot in the face survived, but needed major surgery and a long recovery. On the Monday morning of April 10th, 2023, a 25-year-old Old National Bank employee named Connor James Sturgeon went into the bank he worked at during a scheduled employee meeting. Sturgeon started an Instagram live stream, which would be removed by the platform almost immediately, then pulled out his RF 15 style rifle and opened fire on his co-workers. Inside the conference room, police were flooded with 911 calls. We have an active shooter. He's an employee of Old National Bank. Get here now. >> Oh my god, there's an active shooter there. Um Oh my god, I'm in the closet with one person. I hear I hear I hear gun. >> At one point, Sturgeis own mother called police to warn them that her son was on his way to the bank with a weapon. >> My son might be have a gun and he's heading toward the Old National at uh on Main Street here in Mobile. He's he he's nonviolent. He's never done anything. >> The first officers to arrive were rookie officer Nicholas Wilt and his training officer Cory Galloway. As their cruiser pulled up, Sturgeon began shooting at them through the bank's windows. >> Pull up, pull up, pull, pull up, pull up, pull up, pull up, pull up, pull up, pull. Go. Stop. STOP RIGHT HERE. BACK UP. BACK. BACK UP. GET me out here. Stop right there. Open the jump. >> Want something back or wrong? We do have to have cards. back. We'll make the entry from the uh from the east side. [music] [music] Awesome. As the officers pushed toward the bank entrance, rookie officer Wilt took a single round to the head and dropped on the steps in full view of the shooter, forcing his training officer, Galloway, to move fast to keep him alive. God damn it. The shooter has an angle on that officer. We need to get up there. I don't know where he's at. The glass is blocking him. He's shooting straight through these windows right towards the officer when he be able to plate somehow to be able to get there and pull him down from the stairs. GOD, I DON'T HAVE AN ANGLE. I think I got him down. I THINK HE'S DOWN. YANK OFF NOW. [screaming] YANK HIM DOWN THE STAIRS. Move it. >> Yeah. SUSPECT DOWN. GET THE OFFICER. >> HUH? >> I know. He's down. Get the officer. Connor James Sturgeon was killed on the spot by multiple shots, allowing officers to enter the bank to help survivors and transport officer Wilt to the hospital. As a result of the massacre, five bank employees were killed and eight people were injured. Officer Nicholas Wilt survived, but his brain injury was catastrophic, [music] leaving him with serious permanent neurological damage. He required long-term medical care and rehabilitation and he would never return to police duty. Sturgeon believed he was about to lose his job and investigators said that belief was a key factor in why he attacked his workplace. In his writings, he framed the shooting as a way to draw attention to gun access and mental health, especially how easily he was able to legally buy the rifle.
