On September 15th, 2026, officers in Alliance, Ohio responded to a disturbance at a local car dealership. What began as a confrontation inside a business would quickly turn into a deadly officer involved shooting just minutes later. According to police, 67-year-old Joseph J. Derko Jr. was accused of becoming aggressive with employees at W-ally Armour's dealership on West State Street. Police say Derko allegedly displayed a handgun during the confrontation before leaving the property in a red truck. Surveillance video reportedly captured part of the incident, including Derko striking a vehicle window and appearing to point a firearm toward an employee. Officers were given a description of the vehicle and began searching for it. They eventually located the truck at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Johnson Avenue, and that's where the situation escalated. What happened [music] next was captured on officers bodywn cameras. >> Right. >> Officers are okay. We need medical on the way. Everybody good? >> Yeah. We are going to be in the 1200 block of Johnson. We are going to be right next to the apartment complex here by apartment 1244D here. Thank you. Good job, guys. Someone come up with me on cover. We're going to have to get him out on the ground. Need a little shot. The second body camera angle provides another perspective on those critical moments. From this position, officers can be heard communicating with one another while attempting to control the situation. The footage is difficult to watch because the final seconds happen so quickly. Police have said Derko was armed and investigators recovered a firearm from the scene. The police chief also said investigators believed Derko fired [music] one shot. However, because the investigation was still underway, not every detail of the shooting had been publicly established at the time of the initial reporting. That distinction is important. The body camera footage shows what officers saw and experienced in those final moments, but investigators will still have to determine the complete sequence of events using video, physical evidence, witness statements, forensic evidence, and the [music] officer's accounts. Derko was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the three officers involved was injured. >> We are going to be in the 1200 block of Johnson. We are going to be right next up to the apartment complex here by apartment 1244. She got some gloves here. >> Thank you. Good job. need someone come up with me on cover. >> All right, me and well shot, guys. Where's your hand? >> Shots fired. Headquarters. Shots fired. >> You guys all right? >> Yeah, we're good. Well, you all right? Everyone's all right. Everyone's all right. Good. Officers are okay. We need medical on the way. >> Oh crap. [panting] >> Oh [ __ ] [sighs] >> Everybody good? >> Yeah. We are going to be in the 1200 block of Johnson. We are going to be right next to the apartment complex here by apartment 1244. [snorts] He's got some gloves here. >> Thank you. Good job. See, someone come up with me on cover. All right, me and well shot.
