One man, Travis Almond, used his sweatshirt as a makeshift tournquet while a nurse on a motorcycle checked for proper medical equipment. >> Let's see if they have a tourniquet in that car. A proper tourniquet. I >> got out of the car. The cop fell to the ground cuz he had been bleeding for some time. Um, but the cop was coherent enough as I stepped out of the car to say tourniquet. >> And so that just signaled me to grab my sweatshirt out of the back of the car and tie it around his leg. They had him pinched against the median and he was, you know, calm, like I said, and then freaking out. And all I did was put my hand on his chest and just look him in the eyes and tell him to calm down. And what if for whatever reason that helped. >> Several people worked together to restrain the suspect and others offered spiritual support to keep the officer calm. We had to grab his walkie-talkie to phone in cuz he's trying to call on there was a bunch of people there trying to call 911. The line was busy. You know, it's getting getting crowded. Um, so when I grabbed the magazine, the gun, I grabbed his walkie-talkie and handed to the officer where he gave the code of officer down. >> Even while bleeding, the officer radioed in, "Officer down," and called his wife to reassure her. >> You know, he said, "Babe, I've been shot. I want you to know I love you and I'm taken care of." Bystanders praised the officer as the true leader, crediting his composure with guiding their life-saving efforts. >> It's amazing also to see how many other people were involved that stepped in to help out. You know, it took everybody to make sure everything was okay. It wasn't any one person. >> Somebody trying to do good in our community was saved by the community. >> CHP officials also commended the group's quick action, saying their teamwork likely saved the officer's life. He remains in stable condition as the investigation continues. >> A cell phone video captured the moment a California Highway Patrol CHP officer was attacked near a busy freeway on-ramp in Santa Ana. >> These incidents happen all the time. The officer had approached a pedestrian to tell him not to walk on the freeway when the man suddenly slapped the officer's hand, sparking a violent struggle. The suspect put the officer in a headlock, raising fears that he might grab the officer's gun. Witness Everardo Navaro, who happened to be driving by, saw the officer in serious danger and rushed to help. The officer was in a very uh really bad position, you know, he was uh um like on down. I I was concerned about the guy like grabbing the officer gun and and and shoot the officer. >> Navaro struck the suspect from behind, but said the man was extremely strong and barely reacted. Calling for help, Navaro was soon joined by two other drivers who helped subdue the attacker. like like he was like super strong, like very like he didn't even feel it. >> According to CHP, the suspect had earlier been yelling at motorists and trying to remove a freeway sign before officers arrived. >> As our officer was getting back on his motorcycle to leave the scene, the pedestrian ran towards the officer with his with his fist raised in a fighting stance. >> The officer was taken to the hospital, evaluated, and later released with no serious injuries. The bystanders, a father and son, had pulled over to avoid the chase but unexpectedly found themselves caught in the middle of it. The father, who is handicapped, was sitting in the car when the suspect attempted to take it, prompting his son, Joseé Morris, to intervene. >> I had got down to take a beater cuz they were supposed to pass just by >> Jose tried to tackle the suspect, but was punched in the face before police quickly subdued the man. Aerial footage showed the intense scene while police stressed the suspects had no regard for public safety. It was clear these individuals did not care about the safety and wellbeing of the public. >> Jose's father praised him as a hero >> for risking himself to protect him. But Jose said he was simply defending the man he loves. >> My world. That's my dad. >> That's it. The only person actually in this world that understands me. >> Investigators believe the suspects may be linked to other bank robberies. During the chase, they ditched several bags and one full of cash was recovered with the FBI now involved in the case.
