All this still alive, dude. >> Okay, sir. You okay? >> He's good. He's alert and talking. >> Holy. >> This was the guy running. >> Yes. >> As officers engage in conversation while awaiting emergency crews, the suspect is already in [music] custody. At this moment, no one on scene could have predicted just how far this case would stretch or how long it would take to [music] reach its conclusion. More on this shortly. >> WATCH THOSE WIRES. WATCH THE WIRES. WHY? WATCH THOSE WIRES. >> EVERYBODY BACK TO THE CAR. BACK TO the car now. >> Sergeant, I'm still here. >> I know. Neither am I. >> I can only imagine. When I was calling out crash, Doug, his car was losing control and I could just see he he was going way too fast and he couldn't maintain it. He hit some bump in the intersection there and came clear across. Wish I had some big M. I'd just grab them out of here. That's not even fire either. That's us. What the Harris? I thought they were already coming. Now is this flying Mach 300. >> Hey, Sarge. >> We don't know what the going on. >> Neither do I. I'm glad the police are working. >> You You still got consciousness? >> Well, I mean, you're not fading in and out on me though, none, right? Find my damn phone. I'd throw mine in at you if I could. >> As emergency crews arrived on scene more than 15 minutes after the initial crash, it would take [music] them an additional 20 minutes before carefully removing the officer from his vehicle. Both the officer and suspect were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. We've been following this case for more than [music] 3 years now, and you'll never guess what happened after the suspect was released from bond. The suspect, [music] 57-year-old Dwayne K. Smith was later charged with fleeing and eluding, felon in possession of ammunition, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, carrying [music] a concealed weapon, and five counts of third offense felony firearm. Smith pleaded no contest to several of the charges, but left [music] the most serious counts for a jury. His trial was scheduled for October 2023, but when the date arrived, Smith failed [music] to appear. An arrest warrant was issued. The following footage takes place nearly 3 years later as officers arrive at his residence [music] to take him into custody. >> I think he knows we're here. Please render yourself with your hands up. You will not be harmed. You're not going away. >> Hey, you're right. You can break that camera on the front garage. Jumbo can reach it. >> That was my idea. That's what I told Jumbo. >> He's a good boy. >> No. I'm sorry for the inconvenience and uh this individual came to the door like we told him to. You'd be >> Yeah. >> But we're shutting this down right now. Okay. All right. >> I'm sorry for the inconvenience, sir. >> No problem. >> Come out and you will be unharmed. Delaying Smith. >> Despite repeated commands for Smith to exit the home, officers eventually barricaded the garage, calling in SWAT and deploying a K-9 unit. Smith was bitten during the arrest and taken into custody. [music] That portion of the incident was not captured on camera. that man everywhere, bro. >> Yeah, he was really bite me. I kept telling him to get dog. They just let me bite. >> I got I got No, I kept telling you to let go with my dog, >> bro. He was bite me. I'm going to let him go if he bit me. >> Go with your hands. I told you to call me. >> He was biting me, sir. I'm going to hold it to stop you from biting me. I'm sorry. >> That's going to get you bit more. >> It did. >> That's why you got bit in the head. >> It did. I did. >> So, you're saying all this is from the dog? >> Yeah. [ __ ] yeah. >> All right. Come over here for the dog and bite me, bro. He didn't give a >> That was me and I did. That's why I kept telling you to crawl to me. You been here? >> Yes. >> Hand on your leg, I'm assuming. >> Yeah. Man, my butt out your butt. >> You see all that, bro? >> He did. >> That dog beat you up, man. >> Good. He should have. He did his job. >> Listen, it's cute. >> It's not cute. It's just true story. >> After his arrest, Smith was convicted of armed robbery and third offense felony firearm charges that carry a mandatory minimum sentence and the possibility of life in prison. He is currently serving his sentence at Lakeland Correctional Facility with a projected earliest release date of May 21st, 2059. Ever wonder why some people who clearly shouldn't be out end up walking free anyway? We get guys out here with violent charges, firearm prior, and a track record of running from the law. still sleeping in their own beds while the victims sleep with one eye open. That's the kind of flaw [music] that makes every cop shake their heads. The system's designed to protect rights, but sometimes it protects the wrong people. When [music] someone's proven they'll run, lie, or shoot, keeping them free until trial isn't justice. It's a dangerous risk. When a cop spots a suspect's vehicle tied to an armed robbery, that's not a normal stop. It's a potential gunfight waiting to happen. [music] This driver wasn't nervous or confused. He was determined. He went through stop signs, a red light, and slammed into a pole, trapping a sergeant inside. You don't do this kind of stuff because of fear. You do it because you're a criminal. And this is the kind of man who's already made peace with this type of lifestyle. And yet, even after all that, he still ended up back in the community free while the system dragged its feet. This is where street cops and courtrooms collide. Because on the street, actions have instant consequences. Run from a cop, crash into a pole, you're going in cuffs or an ambulance. Judges and prosecutors have to play by a different rule book, balancing constitutional rights, bail reform policies, and overcrowded jails that force them to pick who really needs to be locked up. And they'll tell you they're protecting fairness, not cutting bricks. But the result looks the same to the people on the streets. The courtroom might believe in reform, but the streets believe in reality. If you're reckless enough to rob a store, flee from a cop, and crush a patrol car, you've earned your spot behind bars. >> [music]
