Domestic violence can turn into murder in seconds. Officers walk into that reality every single day. >> Ma'am, is she breathing? >> No, I don't think so. >> Okay, tell everybody. >> I came out my back door and he was running away. >> This man is keeping his ex hostage in an apartment hallway. [music] >> I want to talk to you, man. Then that's what it's going to be. Your best bet. Put them guns down. >> You let the girls out and I'll always talk to you about it. But first, officers receive this harrowing call after a woman is shot and brought dead light. Take a look. >> You're away. [screaming] OH MY GOD. >> HELLO. >> OH MY GOD. >> YO, THE uh um THE YOUNG LADY OUTSIDE. I THINK SHE GOT SHOT. >> OKAY. OKAY. OKAY. MA'AM, just calm down for me. Where has she been shot at? >> My mama just got shot. >> Okay. Where? >> And who got shot? >> My mom. It's a little girl outside laying down on the ground. >> Ma'am, is she conscious and breathing? >> No. Ma'am, STOP. [screaming] My friend knocked OUT ON THE GROUND. YOU GOT TO HURRY UP. I guess in the house. Can you tell us in your breathing? >> NOT GOING DOWN THERE. >> YOU SEE WHO SHOT HER? >> YEAH, he was in like a plaid jacket. >> Black male, white male, Hispanic. >> Black male. >> Do you know anything about him? >> No, I don't. >> How many shots did you hear? >> A whole lot. More than 20. I know that. >> Did it sound like they were coming from more than one different guy? >> Yes. He on foot out the park going towards the street. I'm walking down here cuz my son not in the house. It's three kids. >> Three kids were shot. >> Yeah. Oh my god. This baby mama. A police car just rolled past. So they might see kids outside playing. It's ridiculous. >> 167 and 170 around. >> I don't want the officers to walk right past him. Which way was he had it? >> Ma'am, is she breathing? >> No, I don't think so. >> Okay, tell everybody to move away from her. >> Hello, ma'am. >> All right. You said police. >> Oh my god. Four people. Is that a kid? >> Did you see the person that shot them? >> I came out my back door and he was running away. Oh my god. How do people >> either of you guys have a media in your car? >> 32 Ocean. I do not. >> Wow. You know, it's it is harrowing. I mean, can you imagine uh responding to such a chaotic scene? Emotions are flying high. And I got to tell you, the job of a dispatcher can become very challenging, right, and complex when you're trying to get information to get a good descriptors, right? Some really good information about the suspect, right? give me specific where you're at location so that we can uh respond accordingly. And I got to tell you, man, it's one of those situations where when you get there, and I've been there and done that, you know, 24 years in LAPD, uh it's it's um somehow someway you got to maintain your composure and and give that help, right, that they actually need. I've got three females down in the fire lane. >> Anybody see anything? >> That way. All the way down. Straight down. Straight down. He just ran that way. >> Describe him. What's it look like? >> He was wearing a brown hoodie with a red book bag and his dark skin. He >> 98 brown hoodie >> and he just tried to get in his backpack. >> Was it was it black backpack? >> Yeah, it was a red backpack. Like a bean backpack. backpacks. Last seen headed towards St. Paul. >> Cannot understand you. >> Brown hoodie, red backpack. Last scene headed towards St. Paul. Hey, look. >> Back up. Come here. Beautiful. Black. >> Okay, let me stop right there because what you just heard was an initial crime broadcast right to the partner. look, get information out quick, a direction of travel, right? So we can try to apprehend the suspect, but at the same time, you have a homicide scene and you're going to try to contain that as much as possible, right? While you're getting the assistance, the calvary is coming. The help is going to get there hopefully sooner than later, right? But at the same time, that initial crime broadcast, you got to give it to the 911 dispatcher so that they can broadcast citywide, right? for all units, you know, within that quadrant, within that neighborhood or that area so that we can still maybe have eyes or someone can see and say, "Hey, you know, there's a suspect and he's heading in this direction." >> Boy, just right there IN THE CAR. >> THE PERSON that shot him is in a car. >> Yeah. IN A BLACK RIGHT PAST THE POLICE. Oh my god. >> Yo, what the [ __ ] smooth. >> Two for clear for medics. I got one that's kind of bleeding right now. >> Thought it was a kid cuz she's little, but it's another grown woman. >> Okay. >> I There's nothing we can do right now. >> I'VE GOT MEDICS COMING. I've got medics. I I got nothing for them. 32 Ocean. I got another female victim shot in the arm. Disregard. I've got five injured females. >> You You okay? Where are you hit? >> Huh? >> In the back. >> I don't have any medical stuff. >> I've got five victims over here. Two ambulatory, three that are down. Unknown life status. I just seen this man kill so many people in a brown jacket. He was sitting in this car that's right here on the black car. >> He black. He had a brown hoodie on. He got a drop by somebody like the color car that he was in. It's a black one that's sitting on the feeder lane right here. >> You said it's sitting in the feeder lane. >> Yes. >> Right now. >> I want to say when it happened. Yes. I want to say his name is K because I heard them call his name. They kept saying K, what are you doing? I don't know who it is, but that's all I heard. And that's just him. >> He leaving the car. He leave on foot. >> No, he left on foot. >> Is the car still out there? >> Yes. >> Okay. Justin. I got you. >> Yeah, he took the words right out of my mouth. Let's get some yellow tape. Uh, get the crime scene going. Like I mentioned before, the inner perimeter, then the outer perimeter. Get an officer there with a log and start logging all the people that are present that are coming into the crime scene and that are exiting the crime scene. But at the same time, what's very important is this crisis response to deal with the family. I mean, you can only imagine. Uh it's just uh there really isn't words to explain how that feels when you're actually there knowing that you just you're seeing five possible dead bodies. Uh and it's a major homicide. So, it's kind of hard to explain. >> I got right now. >> Who Who is right there? >> The shooter. >> Yeah. I don't know what he did, but he was trying to make me take him somewhere. Where? Where? Where? >> What is he wearing? >> Wait, show black pants. >> Okay. >> Is he running? >> That first walk in. Come on. Get out of the way. >> Come on. Come on. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. GO. >> White shirt blacks. 86= 418 something where we're shooting. Hey sir, let me talk to you real quick. >> You think you got your ID on you by chance? >> No, sir. You speak my name. >> What's your first and last name? >> Okay, just spell out loud. Should be on camera. >> C I O. >> All right. Thanks a lot. Appreciate you. Wes, he's good. >> What is your name? >> Dante. These are gloves. What is it? >> What was your name? I don't know the name of the suspect. I don't know if someone has that. >> You got your ID on you? No, sir. You know your social. >> Yes, sir. >> Where are you coming from right now? >> I'm just walking home. >> But where were you coming from walking home? >> I was walking down you guys see just both your hands. I just want to see them. >> I'm going up. I'm going up the regular. >> Okay. So, when I mentioned the initial crime broadcast, it's very very important to get the name as well. I mean, one of the members there, right? one of the victims or the witnesses had to have known or it seems like they'll know each other and maybe perhaps would have gotten the first name, maybe even the last name and then put out that information. So that way when you do detain what you would think would be possible descriptors that match this particular person. Then yes, then we have a we have a good ID. Then after that comes the field show up to ID the suspect. >> All right. An individual with a striped shirt. Is he good? >> Okay, I copy. All right, he's good. Thank you, buddy. So, he just killed everybody or what? >> What's going on, man? >> My mother have everything on her. >> What unit is she in? >> I'm not writing my name or nothing down. She's upstairs >> on this one right here. Okay. Hey, this unit right here, right above me, she's got a ring camera. They called the entire thing. She said she don't want a lot of people over there. I'm just send somebody up there and she'll let you see >> what you doing, man. >> What you mean with my >> What you doing, man? >> What you mean what I'm doing? >> Let me see your face, man. Hey, baby. >> Damn. Let me see your stomach. >> You do know mommy and dad, right? >> You feel me? I already said what I said. I told you I apologize. You know >> if you knew >> you think I don't know that like >> all I can say is me, man. Lot of change. You know, you don't understand. Like I was in this start crying. >> You don't be there. You know that, right? I don't really care how much time I do for real. For real. Like, you feel me? Like, it is what it is. But at the end of the day, you know, like >> I just want to be able to, you feel me, just see my child. Like, >> if the tables was turned, how how >> I I can't ask you how would you feel because you you don't know this feeling. >> I'm in here talking to mental health people. No, none of that work. Only thing that's working, you feel me? Talking to people. And I told you my problems. Like I told you I need to talk to a therapist. I told you I need to do all them things. You feel me? I ain't never do it. >> You talking about you was going through your own >> everybody go through bro like I'ming dumb like >> what? >> That's just what it was. You know I didn't get help. You feel me? I built my powers alone. I built my powers by myself. The end of the day I know I was wrong. You feel me? though this bro >> we could have sat t any mother game [laughter] bro I wasing dared you knew that and you can't sit here and tell me >> so so so >> what what what >> you never want to hear nothing I was saying about this game like I said I know ain't got ain't got >> the I don't even know what the to do I don't know how to >> great jail house conversation that's going on. It is a good piece of evidence for the prosecution to use and introduce into evidence at the trial with these uh murder charges. Right. Uh with that being said, as you can tell, she's building uh this rapport with him to get him to confess uh to the murders. >> I'm feeling >> that's his question. There's nothing I can say. >> Nothing can be said like nothing. >> Okay. When we wrap this case up, we're going to be looking at two things. One is the importance of immediate safety when a threat is identified. We call that situational awareness. And two, effective reporting and cooperation. Okay. When we call 911, what are the descriptors and what information does the dispatcher need? That's very important for us to be able to apprehend the suspect. Okay, we'll get back to his charges in just a minute. Next up, police respond to an ex-girlfriend held hostage in an apartment hallway. >> Police department. >> Sunonny, let her answer the door. Sunonny, come to the door then. Cora, can I open the door? >> Is it unlocked? >> It's locked. >> Yes. >> What is he doing right now? >> Sunny, move out of the way or you can get a charge. Do you understand that, >> [ __ ] As soon as you open this door, I'ming everything up. [ __ ] you better come in with the attempt and kill me. Shoot me. You talking about going nowhere. Come through this. You going to have to shoot me, bro. And that's on everything. Whatever you guys like to do. You remember you guys like to do. Matter of fact, I'm about to board this. We about to have a standoff. And I got guns. >> He's making 57 comments by cop and say he's got guns and he's going to shoot us. >> He keeps pacing in front of the door. She says there's no weapons. She can't get up and get to the door. So, I just got to talk to you. >> I'm not playing none of that, bro. I did better. >> Okay. If you did nothing wrong, then talk to me. >> Look how you're talking >> because you came at me, dude. >> Supposed to be a peace officer. You [ __ ] dead [ __ ] As soon as you come in this [ __ ] I'll punch you. >> Can you use any words other than that? >> Okay. >> Yeah. Let's get a perimeter going. Have officers respond to the rear. Hopefully, they can get eyes develop that for sure. But I will say this, you have to take those threats seriously, right? And 57 comments by cop, you know what they mean by that. Uh it's one of those things where yes, you're antagonizing and enticing the police to respond so that something heinous and something really, really bad can happen to the suspect. With all that being said, it might also meet the criteria of a SWAT call out. However, uh these officers are confident enough to handle the whole situation. Let's see. She's saying he doesn't live here. >> There's a friend in there, too. >> There's a friend in there as well. >> I'll try to talk. >> Hey, Sunny. Officer Jol. What's up, man? >> Hey, what's going on? Why are we all upset? >> Shoot the door down. >> Shoot the door down. I don't want to shoot the door down. I just want to talk to you >> to to shoot the door down. Do you want us to come in there and fight me? >> Why? Just let the females go and we we avoid a lot of this. >> Last I knew, he said that uh somebody was talking to Casey through the door, but I didn't know if that was the front door or if that was an interior. >> Hey, Cora, can you get up and come to the door? Has he threatened harm to you? >> Why? >> I need these other apartments knocked on the door. I need them to leave. At least need to know the situation that we have an emergency situation going on here. It's in their best interest to leave right now. >> Good call on the officer. Uh we have to um evacuate all personnel. This situation is what we called a criminal barricaded suspect with two possible hostages, right? And so what you also want to do is get that CNT, that crisis negotiation team with time, right? Is time of the essence or do we have to act now? You know, those are one of the decisions that you have to make. So, while the officer is maintaining that rapport, hopefully you can get a CNT team on scene so that they can relinquish those duties and hopefully come to some peaceful end, right? >> What? >> You let the girls out and I'll talk to you about it. >> We got an emergency situation going on over here. It would be in your better interest to leave. I can't force you to leave, but I would highly advise you leave. >> Or could you and your friend go to the balcony? [clears throat] Cora, did you hear me? >> Cora. >> Hey, Cora, you guys. Okay? You come out onto the porch, on the balcony. >> What's What's going on? >> This morning, I had offered to take him home because he had stayed here last night with my brother. >> Okay. Um, my brother left this morning for work and I told him, I said, "Okay, I got to go to work. We got to go." And now he's like, "I'm just refusing to go." I don't want it to be a domestic violence situation. I don't want to put my hands on her. Yeah. >> I don't want him to put his hands on me. I don't want my property broken. Yeah. >> I just want to You had a CPO for a while, didn't you? >> Yeah. >> What What's going with that? >> I I dropped it because things were good. They were left alone. We haven't been together. He hasn't lived here since the CPO. Well, prior to the CPO, he hasn't lived here. So, >> okay. Are the perimeter units speaking with Cora for her own safety? If she can jump out of that balcony, that's what she should be doing right now. >> Are you guys willing to try to climb down over here to get out just cuz he's barricaded inside? If if I get a ladder up here, will you guys climb down for me? >> I mean, I don't mind. I mean, >> Sunny, I just I need you to call me. Okay. >> Don't play with me and I'm not going to play with you. You don't want the to be a mess. >> I don't I want to talk to you, man. >> All right, then. That's what it's going to be. your best bet. Put them guns down, >> buddy. I can't trust you right now. You haven't given me any reason to trust me. You're not working with me. >> If you want me to unlock this door, put the guns out. >> So, we're working on getting somebody to bring a ladder up. >> Okay. >> Okay. Um, like I said, you guys going back in to grab shoes. Probably isn't. >> I think he's actually going to put his hands on her. >> What are you his sister or >> No, that's my son's cousin. Okay. On his on his >> Okay, >> buddy. You We're past that. You buddy, listen. >> You said that you could smoke these chicks at any point. >> I can't trust you now. >> Your best bet if you come in here department, you better be I'm ready to unload every one of them bullets in their gun. Be ready. >> Can you let Cora and her friend go? >> They can jump. Call the fire department and get a lot ladder. >> You want them to jump off the balcony? >> Well, they can get the fire department, right? >> Why? >> That's a bad side, buddy. >> Yeah, but they got ladders, though. >> Okay. Why? Why not make this easy and let them just walk out and then we can talk to you? >> Because no one made it easy for me. You know that. >> All I did was knock on the door. Sunny, >> I'm trying to tell you, no one makes it easy. >> And Sunny, that may be the case. And you're probably going through a mental episode where you know your emotions are up and down. Who knows, right? We don't know much information about Sunny, but the fact of the matter is that yes, we got to get those victims out of that apartment. That's immediate priority number one, right? To preserve life. >> What all was he saying about want to go out? back on. >> You guys watched like that one video on Facebook. >> Okay. >> Which you guys are watching the older guy. >> Okay. >> And hyperixate from like one of you guys. >> Is he trying to do this like Facebook live or something? >> Um I mean he's got a charger in his hand and he's got his phone. I don't know if it's Facebook live right now. >> Okay. >> It's an attention thing for sure. Sony maintain that perimeter position in case Sony tries to use the same exit. >> Yeah. Three big guys down here. Two hold in the ladder and one ready to catch you. You're not going to fall. >> I need you to open the door with your hands up. Don't have any weapons. And we can resolve this. >> Bring me water. >> Do you have water in there? >> No. >> Not a sink. Nothing. >> He's close to opening the door. >> We will get you water. How long is that going to be? >> Well, to get your water, we'll have to open the door. >> According to your victim that they were together in the past, yes, >> he came over last night. That's the first time he's been over in a long time. They have lived together in the last 5 years, but he does not live here. Came over. >> We have household members, but not residency. >> What's that? >> So, we have household members, but not res. >> Um, correct me if I'm wrong. Did Kora file like a CPO against you and then that get dropped? And then and so so there's a process and yes it does take there's a lot of to that process but in that moment we had to go through a process and we had to do stuff right. So that's where we're at with this. Don't don't get bogged down in the details and yeah we we'll have a procedure to do but just because we're got to pop open this if we had to pop open the door that then it's I'll grab a knife and then kill police. That's not what I don't want that for you. Really what happened was, >> yeah, nobody wants that. Nobody wants that at all. Come on, Sunny. Just open up the door. You know, I got to tell you, man, these officers are doing an outstanding job deescalating this whole situation to a point where they're probably going to get him to open up that door. >> He busted my head open and I got staples. The cops told me that if I hadn't received staples or sutures that they'd be arresting him. But once it was like once he did that and I followed through with all the paperwork and did everything on my end, somehow he just kind of got away with it. >> Okay. >> And so it's like in a way I feel failed, but it's like I just kind of let it be what it was. And then then when we went to court for it, it was like, "Hey, we're going to drop the assault thing, but we'll keep the CPO because what happens is if he violates again, it will be more of a charge that could likely stick. Yeah. Well, I don't want that for you either because again, it's all just a process. >> Hey, contact. >> Go to the front door. >> You coming out? Are you coming out? >> Are you coming out? >> Are you going to step out? >> Are you going to step out and come down? >> Then step out. >> This assault charge is going to be like the highest misdemeanor, not a felony. But if he gets to he may or may not depending on we know we'll be able to keep him. Well, he's violated it and he does have other felonies for that CPO, >> but he's out. >> Keep your hands up. >> Yeah. In case you're wondering, I think the CPO means a restraining order to us here in the state of California, right? You have the uh TTRO, the temporary restraining order. You go to a hearing and you get the permanent one. So the CPO, I don't want to misword. I think it stands for custody protective order. And I want to say this is the state of Ohio, I think. Okay. >> Put your hand up. >> You reach for your shirt again. You're going to get sponged. >> I'm going get sponged. >> Keep your hands up. >> Have dirty ones on your right. >> Good. I'll try the sergeant card if he comes out again. >> Hey, Sunny. >> We're ready. >> I want to make Yeah, we're ready. Just make sure you don't have anything in your hands just like last time. >> I don't. >> Okay, sweet. Go ahead and open up that door. >> All right, go ahead. >> Don't move. Hands on top of your head. Do it now. Face away from me. Slowly back up to the sound of my voice. Do it now. Back. Back. Jaws. Hands. Back. Back. >> I'll get you some water. >> We'll get this taken care of. >> Is that the said he was going to shoot me? >> No. >> Oh, which one is it? Cuz I'll beat those. >> You're the one saying you're going to kill us. >> No, bro. The bro down there told me he was going to sponge me. >> The window. >> I really switch you. >> I'll really say. Don't worry about the window. >> No. Can you get my phone number? >> I don't care. I'll see you day elbow. >> Where's your car? >> What's up, buddy? >> What? >> Soft ass. >> Had a gun on me. >> No, you don't. >> Yeah, I do. >> Where's it at? >> Got 40 with the switch on. >> Oh, where's it at? >> I don't know. Got switch on that on you though. >> One click that MT30. >> I don't think it's going to do that. I'll bet you do. I bet you don't got it going on. I bet I got switch. Hey, can I ask you something? >> What? Sonic. >> It's okay for an officer to tell you they're going to scorch you. >> Scorch you. >> Kill you, mother. >> Pointing a gun at us. >> Well, what I will say, I don't think it's okay for you to be telling officers that, you know what, I'm going to kill you. I'm going to unload a clip, etc., etc. All that jibberjabbing that you're saying just goes to show you how you actually want to get confronted by the police, right? And that's on you. And by the way, that's going to be all evidentary value as we move forward with the criminal proceedings. >> You jumped off the bot when you started running. >> Yeah, I wouldn't recommend. >> They had a K9 out there. That would have ripped your ripped you up. >> I know. The last time I seen the K9, you guys put them on somebody instead of letting them chase the person. They pick the K9 up, put it on the old man. Weird. You know that was up. I don't care what you say. >> You don't know. dog's life is not in his own life. >> At the end of the day, we wouldn't go home. >> So, if I kill a dog, if I kill a police dog right now, what would I be trying to do? >> Don't do it. We won't find out. I don't know exactly. >> But what I'm telling you is that dog's life >> a dog a dog's life does matter less than ours. >> That dog serving >> dog's life is less important than a human. >> And he's doing the most gangster thing going in there doing the head-on work. >> Yeah. >> And he don't that thing is less important. Yes, >> you guys are my dog. I swear to God, I'll I'll stand over you, look you in the eye, and shoot you 30 times in the head on YouTube. I swear to God, you know that video was wrong. That's why you getting uncomfortable. >> I'm like, you know, it was wrong, bro. >> Just talking to ignorant people. >> Just like you said, half my job. >> The dog's life is not important as a human. That dude, I'll stand by that. >> Now, was that dude that was laying in the bed, was his life important? >> Everyone's life's important, >> right? So when the dog went in there, right, and did not charge at him, why would he put the dog on? >> Did the dog kill him? >> But why did he put the dog on? Why did he put the dog on? >> Why did he put the dog Why did he put the dog on? I never said he killed him. >> You ain't even read me my Miranda rights yet. >> Don't have to. Then ask me any questions, too. >> You don't understand how law enforcement works. >> You do. You got to read everyone your Miranda rights. >> No, I don't. >> Yes, you do. >> No, I don't. >> You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say. Yeah. >> Go ahead and say it. >> It's like that old man. It's like you guys put that dog on that old man. >> Your daughter, too. I I I'll put my leg on the back of your head. Smack him in the cheek. >> Come all over her [ __ ] Dead, [ __ ] >> And I ain't giving you your cuffs back. >> Oh, no. >> I'll smack you [ __ ] >> Trying to tell you that right now. I'm really not far from >> Yeah, I'm real scared of you. >> I don't want you to be scared of me, bro. I'm not trying to have that. I'm just saying you're ignorant as >> you like to drop the N word quite a bit for a white dude. >> I don't give a You the only one that's kind of making her racist now. You the only one talking about by race now for a white dude. >> You're saying the n word left and right. >> My vocabulary talking about >> Okay, so let's go ahead and wrap up this case first. Uh what I will say is uh let's talk about prioritizing personal safety, right? Look, the victim tried everything she can with the CPO and try to get away uh from, as you can tell, Sunny, maybe he has uh some mental issues that he has to deal with. Uh and all that yapping uh and the disrespect, right, against police officers, just goes to show you that, you know, there's people out there that just can't stand the police. But with that being said, the most important part is deescalation. Look, I'm going to talk about deescalation in a lot of these videos, right, as we move forward. and break these down together. Uh, what I will say is this, and this is what we teach about deescalation, is you know what, the suspect gets an offer. Okay? Think of deescalation as a verb. It's something that you offer to the suspect. They get a vote. Okay? You just can't come up with a magic wand and say, "Boop, you're being deescalated." That's just not the way it happens. Okay? And I got to tell you, these police officers, this agency, and I want to say it's um the video doesn't depict who the agency is, but you know what? They did an outstanding job. Okay. Now, going back to the first incident that we watched at the first video, I did talk about the importance of immediate safety when a threat is identified, which we call situational awareness, and at the same time, effective reporting and cooperation. What I will say is this. If you call the police, whether you're the person reporting, the RP, the reporting party, or the victim, make sure that you provide accurate, real time information to the dispatchers because it's very vital for police response, right? Very good descriptors. Try to maintain your emotions and your composure when you call 911 for us to come and help you. Okay. So, Ziante was convicted of three counts of aggravated murder plus malicious wounding and firearm charges. He was sentenced to four life sentences plus 43 years with no parole. Okay. So, Sunny was charged with the following: kidnapping, unlawful restraint, domestic violence, and obstructing official business. He was held on a $15,000 bond. There is no further information about his case. Okay, let's go ahead and click that like button and that notification bell. Don't forget to subscribe.
