On January 14th, 2025, Orlando police responded to Orlando International Airport after a passenger physically confronted Frontier Airlines staff. The legal issues that followed are instructive. Are you from the state of Florida? No, sir. I was going home. Okay. They wouldn't let me go home. He was actually part of it. Say again? Can I get her name, please? Yeah. So, I haven't investigated anything yet. I came over here and they were fighting. Is my lipstick messed up? Say again? My lipstick's messed up. No, it's fine. I'm not sure. Where did the other lady go? She's in the back. She's in the back? Okay. >> to get me that because she put her hands on me. I have it on video. I have my I have my wallet. They were fighting, rolling around on the ground when we got here. I wasn't rolling around. I was on top. You want to speak with the other and take you back to her if you want. No, do it again. Miss Answer, where are you from? I'm from California. From California? Okay, is that your what your ID is going to be from? Is California? >> my Georgia's license. I'm going back to Georgia. I live there. You live in Georgia? But I'm from California. Okay. Understood. Can you take me to the back to see her? Yeah. Thank you. You have cameras up here, right? Yes. Okay. I believe go lost. Can you do that, okay? How How long ago did this occur? I just walked in. My shift. It just happened. Are you okay, young lady? No, what did she Ma'am, ma'am, ma'am, ma'am, ma'am, just calm down. >> [laughter] >> I know, I know, I know, and you're going to press charges. Come on, mommy. Come on. Female. That is correct. No weapons. She scratched his face. This is our witness here standing in the line. And it was a pleasant Are you a passenger or you an employee? Passenger. Okay. Can you tell me what you witnessed? Sure. So, I didn't see the girl when I first walked up, but I standing like at the very front of the line. And then I heard, I don't know if it was her or the other ticket agent telling her, "Ma'am, you can't be there. You have to move." And then like that woman there was was walking up to her and the girl just like kind of came over the counter at her and the swinging started and honestly I can't tell you who swung first. I'm sure there's video. So, I don't want to give any misleading information, but then like she got her by the hair and they went down. Who got Who got the hair? I the the young girl got the employee by the hair and she like had her and took her down by like the head. And I jumped in because I was like, "Holy crap, they're on a conveyor belt." And I've actually I'm I'm a flight nurse. Okay. So, I've actually seen people lose their hands on these things. So, I was like, "Oh my god, they have to get off the conveyor belt." And before like I could get up there, um the gentleman here kind of got in and was trying to get her off of her, but she still had her by the hair. So, I kind of jumped in and then got her fingers out of her hair and once they were separated I got out. Okay. >> [laughter] >> Like I got to go. This was occurring behind the counter? Behind the counter. Yeah, she >> was on the belt? On the belt. Yeah. Super dangerous. You say that you don't know who threw the first punch if a punch was thrown? >> didn't see the first swing, but the girl was definitely behind the counter when it all started. Like she was back there in the drawer or doing something back there and the woman was telling her like "You can't be back here. Leave that alone. Get on the other side." And I didn't hear what the young girl said back to her, but then by the time she got up there, you know, I was like, "Maybe I should >> [laughter] >> another place." So, that's why I didn't see like the initial like who swung cuz my first reaction was like, "Get out of here before the fight happens." But then the fight happened and I'm like, "Oh, someone's really going to get hurt on that conveyor belt." Okay. What time does your flight leave? Uh my flight leaves I boarding starts at 6:16. And the flight leaves at 7:00. Okay. Do you think you have time to fill out a statement form for me? Sure. Okay. Yeah, cuz the one of the gentlemen out there said that he would walk me through security if it got close. Okay. All right. Let me see if I can get someone to bring a statement form over. Okay. So, does this mean I'm not getting on my another flight? Probably not. >> [laughter] >> Am I going to go to jail? It's okay. I'm going to [ __ ] that [ __ ] girl in there and she's going to protect me. You can You can take her to the back. Can I show you my evidence now? Not just yet. Give us one moment. We're going to have other officers they come and they're going to look at all the evidence and everything for you, okay? >> Can I look at those cameras, too? I am sure that Those cameras >> will allow us to look at all of it. Well, I want I'll come and look at it and we'll be able to look at those. Those have to be evidence cuz she put her hands on You understand I'm dealing with a lot of anxiety. I'm about to go to jail. Oh, I I I understand. And this hurts really bad. Am I banned from the airport? Just relax for a second. Have we said anything about being banned? I have a video. All right. Which one is too tight? This one. That one's too tight? >> Yeah, it's cutting me. See, look at my hand. So Leave it like that. Don't move it up and down. But then it's stuck on my muscle. But this one could go up and down like this. Look. This one goes up and down like this. But this one is like super tighter. So just don't don't move it up and down, okay? Hey, nanny. Is there another part of the party? Yes. So, there's an employee Okay. Yeah. So, when I came up bunch of employees were She was on the >> a little mess. She was She was on the ground fighting around with one of the employees and the other employee was trying to get her I don't know exactly what happened. And then she slapped me after you after you got me. She slapped you? While I was in your hands. You know that. What the heck? Well, I don't know if you actually allowed what's going on. Allowed what's going on. But she slapped me while you were holding me. Got it. I did not see that part. Wow. Well, it's okay. I'm assuming we have access to these cameras. >> Camera >> Okay. How much have you had to drink today? I've had a shot. Only one shot? Yeah, it doesn't really take a lot for me though. Okay. I drink here too. Everything's on camera from the entire time I came here to the time and time I'm right now. Okay. Yeah. Look at that. Yeah. But why do I have to be handcuffed if I'm not a threat to society? You're just being detained. That's all. I'm not going to attack anyone else. Just the lady that hit me. I think that's the one in back. She said I don't. Let me check. Yes. This is hurting me. This is hurting me. Yes, ma'am. So, they're not built for comfort. It's Once again, just bear with us a few more moments, okay? If you The more you move it, the the worse Paramedics are on the way, okay? >> [snorts] >> We're going to check you out, okay? Whatever happened, I'm sorry. I can tell you you're shook up. We'll get them here and bring them back to you, okay, dear? Okay? We'll We'll get the paramedics here and come come check you out. Better safe than sorry. You got some scratches on you. But that's not just for someone to slap me and then I not get to defend myself. Was I supposed to just fall back over and go to jail either way cuz I've crossed the barrier? >> So, once again we have to investigate everything. Let us investigate everything. And then you'll see she put her hands on me. >> we'll go from there. Common sense would tell you that just because you possibly could have gotten a trespassing charge doesn't mean you assaulted an employee, making things a lot worse for yourself. Is this going to take a very long time? Can I text my mom? Wait till the investigation's over and then they'll let you do what you need to, okay? I can't do this. I can't go to jail. You'll have me for one moment. I'm not a prisoner and this is so [ __ ] up. I just want to go home. And the lady hit me, so I had to [ __ ] beat the [ __ ] out of you. Tell them I'm a [ __ ] She thinks I'm pretty and I'm small, so I'm not going to [ __ ] her up. [ __ ] I'll [ __ ] you up. [ __ ] don't touch me. I'll keep up these fights. Like, what? Stupid [ __ ] No, I don't want to go to jail. Scratches are there. Yeah, yeah. That lady said that she would jump me. If she That That lady said she would jump me. Make sure if they're getting a statement from them, we keep working with And make sure if anything that her statement goes against my video that you guys know that you have to drop the charge. I need to move first with my lawyer. Let me call my lawyer. >> [snorts] >> If If you can and when you want to, tell me what you witnessed. Tell me what happened up there, okay? She came over to the barrier, which is a rebooking. She was She missed the flight. My job is to rebook her. Now, when you [snorts] say she, are you speaking of the young female that the officers is with out there? Okay. Go ahead. So, um I started to tell her that being that she's late, that the only thing that I could do is rebook her for the next flight. Okay. She missed the flight. I had to business class. She was there on time. Mhm. I told her to this you you missed your flight. Okay. And then I went to my screen to book her for the next available flight. She started video taping me. >> [snorts] >> And she went on rambling rambling like that she was not late. Okay. Um and then she started video taping me. So, you know, I went to my supervisor, "You need to talk to her. She's late. She doesn't believe that she was um late for the flight. I'm trying to rebook her. She's giving a whole lot of bunch of attitude. She's taking uh video taping me and you need to You need to come over." Okay. He came over. She's still on the phone in her hand and the supervisor told her, "Well, are you video taping me?" She said, "Yes, but when you're done, you let me know." So, he went back where he I need to go. So, he had me to go and take a break. So, he took me to the ladies' room. Got to get a got a got a line. Came back home. She was still at my counter. I did not stop. I went towards my super my super Take just take your time. Take your time. What are you doing? She's over there. She's still recording. As I'm talking to her her, she she she alerted me that she jumped the fence. She jumped over. And And then when I turned, she was there and she had her camera on our screen, which is not allowed for the public to see. So, by this time she's behind the counter. >> Oh, yes. Totally behind the counter. Okay. And And I ran to her, "No, you can't do that. You cannot jump over. You got to go to the other side. You cannot take pictures of what you got. You cannot." That's when As I grabbed her and tried to pull her on the other side, that's when she turned around and she slapped me. But I slapped her back. That's when we got into it. And then everybody came over. And she had I think she has something She cut me there with her um I got her ring. I don't know. Okay. I mean, I didn't see any weapon. Okay. So, she We just went at it. Now, just Just prior to her slapping you what led up to that? What happened? Um that I tried putting her on the other side, which is my That's you're not supposed to jump over. Now, when you say tried putting her to the other side, explain to me what you did. Well, I had to grab her cuz she wasn't going to go >> Okay. willingly. Okay. I had to grab her and push her to go to the other side. I mean, she didn't fall or anything. She didn't get a chance to fall cuz she immediately turned around and slapped me. Okay. All right. Get out. You can't be on that side. And I turned. She was on our side and she had She was like this with the phone on the on our sis on our screen. Said, "You can't do that. You can't do that. You can't You cannot come over. You cannot take pictures of that." So, when I got to her, that's when I grabbed her and I tried pushing her to the other side and that's when she turned around. We're going to have somebody come and just check you out, okay? That's when she turned around and she slapped me and I slapped her back. Okay. Now, prior to you coming in contact with her, the injuries to your face, did you have those injuries? No. No. I I haven't even looked at my face. I know it hurts. Okay. I just want to make it clear since I heard I'm being taken and I'm pressing charges too and I have video evidence of this being an attack on me. Okay. Yeah, she said I saw on camera. Yep, they do have camera footage, so they're going to pull that, okay? I know, but I just heard like I was being arrested and nobody else said that by the way except for you, the female officer. But everyone else like, you know, they know how to handle situations. But um yeah. Did you live in Georgia then? Yeah. What were you doing in Orlando? I was chilling out here, traveling. Do you have friends here? >> Making money. Yeah. Okay. I have my own footage too, so are you denying my evidence? Are you guys going to check mine too? You got your own footage? Yeah. You're recording Yeah. Where's your phone? Right there. You were recording on your phone while the >> Yeah. And I've been telling everyone on that and it's all been on footage this whole time. It's still recording. Right in that Right in there. Inside the green bag or the silver bag? >> the silver bag. I have a footage. That's my footage. Let's save us a lot of trouble. We'll see what happened. There you go. Entire video. Okay, and as I'm going to tell you I'm going to tell you again, I did not miss my flight. I was here on time. I bought business class, which is 147 on top of the Frontier class, which means I have two bags, I get to sit in the front, and I get to board early, right? They told me that they could not bring that up on me. And once it got brought up, they said, "Oh, well, you're late now." Okay, well, I was not late when you could not bring up my stuff, so now I need to get another A long time. A long ass time. Just being hella disrespectful to me. Like, this shit's [ __ ] up, guys. Be for real. I tried. I tried. As a human being, I'm also a little bit pissed too. Hey! Excuse me! Excuse me! Put your hands on me. So, we we just hear the commotion, but we can't see what happened. >> But that camera you can see it. That camera look up right there. >> Yeah, they want to view that footage. I want to I just wanted my footage viewed because I have evidence of them just like plainly disrespecting me. Me being disrespectful too, but I'm the customer, you feel me? I'm I'm obviously irate. I missed my flight. I'm I like you have experience of years of being able to deal with this. I should not have to go to jail cuz somebody put their hands on me. I'm defending myself. Right. And if that if that's the case and you guys see that other video, allegedly, if you guys see that other video and this lady put her hands on me, I should not be able to like as as a just person, as a police officer who's supposed to be Okay. >> This [ __ ] started there. They're viewing the other footage, okay? >> They're only investigating. Nah, I have a lot to do, actually. Nah, there's this event going on. It's like a underground Atlanta event. It's a what? It's a underground Atlanta event for influencers, and I got to I got to be there today. So, that kind of pissed me off, too. I was like, damn, I [ __ ] missed opportunity to make all the money I'm about to spend to get out of jail. So, you're an influencer? Yep. That's why that video about to go viral. I was like, she don't even know who the [ __ ] she She really don't even know who she playing with, too, like Even if I go to jail, lawyer, charges dropped, suing the state, suing Frontier. Have you ever been arrested before? >> I have. Okay. I like I like Hi, how are you? So, it's going to be 5 years of a trespass for 5 years. Can I see her ID? Do they have it back there? They have it back there? Okay. If they want to fill it out cuz they have her ID back there, okay? Cuz I don't have her ID. >> No problem. I'll get them to fill it out. Okay. Thank you. I'm not trying to mess this up for you. You don't have a whole lot to search, so Right here. Okay, I'm going to go right here. Yep. Sit right there. Damn school kids. Wait, is this supposed to be right there? Yep. Okay, you sit right there. Slide your feet in, turn to the side, and we'll talk to you, okay? Can I put these up here now? You can put them wherever you can. And then like can you like put them up here? No. No, they sit behind you, okay? Under Florida statute section 810.08, criminal trespass occurs when a person without authorization willfully enters a restricted structure. Airline counter areas are legally protected zones requiring employee clearance. The subject admitted entering the restricted employee area to access a computer. Her belief that pressing the space bar was harmless is legally irrelevant. The crime is unauthorized entry, not what she did once inside. This raises a critical point about airport security. Under federal aviation regulations coordinated with TSA, airline computer systems contain protected passenger data and flight manifests. Unauthorized access violates both state trespass laws and potentially federal statutes. The central legal question becomes self-defense. Florida statute section 776.012 permits non-deadly force when three requirements are met. First, reasonable belief force is necessary. Second, the other party's force is unlawful. Third, the response is proportional. Here's the complication. If airline staff used reasonable force to remove a trespasser, that contact may be lawful, not unlawful force triggering self-defense rights. Property owners and their agents can use reasonable force to exclude trespassers under Florida common law. The subject claims the employee struck her first. If true and unprovoked, this could establish unlawful force. However, her initial trespass undermines her legal standing. Florida courts have held that one cannot claim self-defense while actively committing a crime against the victim. The charge is battery on a person 65 years or older under Florida statute section 784.08. This is a third-degree felony carrying up to 5 years imprisonment. Knowledge of the victim's age is not required for conviction. This enhanced charge reflects legislative policy protecting vulnerable populations. The same physical contact that would be misdemeanor battery becomes a felony when the victim is elderly, regardless of whether injury occurred or the defendant knew the victim's age. From a procedural standpoint, the officer's actions comply with constitutional requirements. Under Illinois versus Gates, probable cause can be established through witness statements alone. The airline employees' accounts provided sufficient basis for arrest without immediately reviewing the subject's video. Graham versus Connor requires judging use of force from the officer's perspective at the moment of decision. Handcuffing behind the back is standard protocol for all arrests and constitutes minimal force on the use of force continuum, regardless of the subject's cooperation. The officers demonstrated professional de-escalation. They allowed the subject to explain her version fully, showed awareness of her psychological distress, and used calming language throughout. This reflects modern crisis intervention training and community-oriented policing standards. The 5-year airport ban deserves analysis. Under Florida statute section 810.08, trespass warnings can prohibit future entry. For violent offenses at airports, 5-year bans are standard under TSA-coordinated security protocols. Violation constitutes a separate criminal charge. The subject's repeated focus on poor customer service reveals a common legal misunderstanding. Customer status provides no immunity from criminal law. Businesses owe customers reasonable service, but restricted areas remain off-limits regardless of service quality or customer frustration. This distinction between civil and criminal remedies is crucial. Poor airline service can be addressed through Department of Transportation complaints, credit card chargebacks, or civil litigation. It cannot justify trespass or battery. Criminal conduct is not an appropriate response to civil grievances. The subject's claim of having video evidence cuts both ways. If it captures her entering restricted areas and the complete sequence of physical contact, it becomes prosecution evidence as much as defense evidence. Video documentation must be considered in full legal context, not selectively. Under Miranda versus Arizona, statements made before custodial interrogation are admissible without warnings. The subject's admissions about entering the restricted area and her assertions about the confrontation were voluntary statements made during investigation, not interrogation, and can be used at trial. Now for the grades. The subject receives a D minus. She committed clear criminal trespass in a security-sensitive airport location. Her self-defense claim faces serious legal obstacles because she was already committing a crime when the confrontation began. However, her cooperation during arrest prevents a failing grade. She followed commands, did not physically resist, and allowed custody procedures. If her video evidence ultimately supports proportional self-defense, she may prevail on the battery charge, though the trespass appears indefensible. Officer Lutridge receives a B plus for excellent de-escalation skills, proper legal application of trespass and arrest standards, professional demeanor with an agitated subject, and minimal force appropriate to the situation. Officer Weinstein receives a B plus for effective backup officer work, proper scene control, professional assistance with witness statements, and coordinated teamwork. Both officers' conduct reflects credit on modern policing standards. Frontier Airlines staff receive a C. They correctly protected restricted areas and appear to have acted within legal authority to remove a trespasser. However, the initial customer service breakdown contributed to escalation that better conflict de-escalation training might have prevented. Key lessons from this case. First, customer frustration never justifies criminal trespass. Restricted areas exist for federal security reasons. Access control is not negotiable regardless of service complaints. Second, self-defense requires lawful standing. You cannot commit a crime against someone, then claim self-defense when they respond. The initial unlawful act undermines subsequent defense claims. Third, proportionality matters. Even if force against you is unlawful, your response must be proportional to the threat. Excessive response negates self-defense protection under Florida law. Fourth, enhanced charges for vulnerable victims carry serious consequences. Battery on someone 65 or older transforms a misdemeanor into a 5-year felony. Age-based enhancements apply regardless of knowledge or injury severity. Fifth, civil and criminal remedies are separate spheres. File complaints through proper channels. Department of Transportation for airline service, credit card disputes for charges, civil courts for damages. Criminal conduct forfeits your civil claim. Sixth, video evidence requires full legal context. Recording an incident helps, but what matters is whether your conduct was lawful under applicable statutes and case law. Not whether the other party was rude or unprofessional. Seventh, airport security violations carry enhanced consequences. 5-year trespass bans are standard for violence. This affects all future travel, requiring use of alternative airports, and creating significant practical hardship. Eighth, de-escalation prevents escalation. Had either party employed conflict de-escalation techniques, this customer service dispute would not have resulted in felony charges and years of legal consequences. The case outcome will depend on complete video review and witness testimony about who initiated physical contact and whether response was proportional. The trespass charge appears certain. The battery charge remains contested pending evidence evaluation. This case illustrates how momentary decisions made in frustration can result in years of legal consequences. The subject now faces potential imprisonment, has a 5-year airport ban affecting her ability to travel, and carries felony charges that impact employment and civil rights. The officers demonstrated that professional law enforcement can manage volatile situations without excessive force through patient de-escalation, proper legal application, and respect for subject dignity even during arrest.
