A young woman confused, emotional, and unraveling minute by minute. Officers trying to calm her, unaware of what was coming next. Before the struggle, before the screams, before the bite, it all started here with a simple breath test that wouldn't work. An hour earlier, complaints began pouring in. Multiple callers reported a young woman swerving through traffic, then stumbling into a Target store. Officers positioned themselves quietly, waiting for her return. >> Careful, careful, careful. Knock on the window. I'm sorry. Hello. >> I'm officer Cer with Chris Lake Police Department. He's at work right now, but I'm going back to his house after. >> I was just buying his Christmas presents. >> Is this your mom's car or is this your mom? >> This is my car. >> Your car? Okay. >> Yeah, I own it. Okay. >> I paid for the >> You paid for it. Where do you live? >> In Fox River Grove. >> In Fox River Grove. >> Really close. >> Okay. So, what were you guys doing at your boyfriend's house? >> We were just watching movies and playing video games. >> Watching movies and playing video games. Okay. And then you got the idea of Explain to me one more time. I was like halfway Christmas presents while he's at work. >> You were going to buy it up by steakhouse and I buy >> Do you guys live together? No. Cuz you live in >> We live separate. I live in Fox Road. >> Got it. Okay. And how old are you? >> I'm 18. >> You're 18? Yeah. Okay. Um, so are you in school right now or no? >> Got it. Okay. What's your first name? >> Ellie. >> Ellie. Hey, Ellie. Um, okay. So, my partner kind of explained why we here. >> She got complaints that I was >> So, just to be clear, you're the owner of this car. And then tell me, what time do you do you know what time it is right now? >> No. Without looking, guess. >> Um, >> I'm cheating. about like 6:30. >> Okay. It's at like It's Right now it's uh 7:15. >> Yeah. >> What time do you think you left his house? >> Like 5:30. >> 5:30. >> Yes. >> Okay. And then And then what did you do when you left his house? >> I came here. >> Okay. But it's 7:15. How long were you inside the store for? A while. >> Like give me an approximate. >> 45 minutes. >> You were in the store for 30 45 minutes. >> Yeah. Looking for presents. looking for president. >> Um, no. >> Okay. Is there anything that you did today that you think in terms of medications, alcohol, uh, prescribed, not prescribed drugs, weed, anything like that that you took today that you think would impair your driving? >> No. >> Okay. Did you have you had any alcoholic beverages today? >> No. >> 0%. >> Zero. I have been sober for 6 and a half months. >> Okay. Um, what about um, marijuana? Any marijuana today? Okay. When was the last time you smoked marijuana? >> I'm sober from alcohol, but not marijuana. But marijuana was probably like yesterday or two days ago. >> Yesterday or two days ago. >> I don't think it would impair my driving today. >> Okay. All right. Um, so since you've been at Target, you have not consumed any alcoholic beverages. Okay. And not >> And they could check the cameras and see that I >> Okay. >> Okay. Um, is there anything illegal that you may have in the car? No. >> Okay. So, you have no alcohol in the car? >> No. >> Okay. No cannabis, weed in the car. Um, so, so, so here's the deal though. Okay, I appreciate it. All right, I appreciate what you're saying to me. However, we have a little bit of a problem. Okay, so I'm going to give you an opportunity to be honest with me, okay? Because when you opened your door, I saw the bottle of vodka that's in your driver's side of your door. >> I don't have any. >> Okay. Well, I saw it. >> Well, >> hold on. I don't I don't want you I don't want you reaching in your car. Well, I you could open the door. >> Okay, I'll open the door. You can stand with Officer Costa right here. >> I'm just saying I don't have a bottle of vodka in my side door. >> Okay. So, you're okay with me opening and looking? >> Maybe she saw it wrong or something. >> You can open and look. >> Okay. >> So, [snorts] okay. >> But officers didn't expect what would happen next because this is where the calm ends. >> Okay. So, now we have a problem. Okay. >> What? >> I have a I have a really big problem. >> What? >> Okay. Now we're not cool. >> Why? >> Okay. And I'll explain to you why we're not cool. Because I saw >> it there. >> I promise you it wasn't >> here. Everything's on video. Okay. So, now what we're going to do is I'm going to have you stand by with these officers and I'm going to search your vehicle. You don't have a warrant to do that. Actually, I have probable cause cuz I observed alcohol. >> You don't have warrant to do that? >> Because I observed >> I have a right to not let you search my car. >> Okay. So, >> I have a right to not let my car, >> unfortunately. >> No, I have a right to not let you search my car. >> We're not We're not doing this. >> I have a right to not let you search my car. They don't have a right to search my car. to me. >> They don't. I've been I've been pulled over before and I know you don't have a right to search my car. >> Chill out. Okay. >> I know. >> Because I don't want to have to put you in handcuffs right now. >> I know you don't have a right to search my car. >> You need to relax to the law. It's called a mobile conveyance. >> You guys looked in my car before. You have a right to search my car and you saw the weed and so you you don't have a right to search my car. >> Listen, >> you don't have a right to search my car. I do. >> No, you don't. No, you don't. Ellie, do not touch me like that. I'm telling you, >> I'm gonna tell you one more time, dear. >> I'm telling you for a fact, you don't have you don't have a right to search my car. >> So, listen to me. This is gonna go one of two ways, okay? I would rather not put you in handcuffs so we can chill out. To put you in handcuffs, okay? I don't want to. >> Sorry to hear that. But this is the deal. If you're cooperative, we can figure this out and work through it. >> I'm just saying you can't search my car without a warrant with seeing a bowl in my car. You can't search my car without a warrant. >> So, I know the law. Probably >> I know the law because I've looked it up and I know you can't search my car without a warrant. So, I'm not allowing you to. >> Ellie, I'm giving you one of two choices. >> I know you can't search my car without a warrant. You guys know this. >> Ellie, these are your choices. These are your choices. You can go stand by that squad car with these two gentlemen. >> Confusion becomes defiance. Defiance becomes panic. Panic becomes something far more dangerous. >> Okay, that's your that's your first choice. If you do not want to do that, your second choice is I'm going to put you in handcuffs. Okay. So, which do you choose? >> You can't search my car without a warrant. >> Which do you choose? I'm going to give you I'm I'm not arguing with you. I'm going to I'm going to give you one opportunity right now. >> You can't search my car without a warrant. >> It's all in body cam. You can't search my car without a warrant. I was a mental health clinician for 10 years before I was a police officer. Okay? So, I can empathize with you, but it's also my job to make sure that you're safe. >> I will stay here. If you just take off the handcuffs, they give you How about this? How about we try to do some breathing? Okay. >> He can buckle me up if you take off the handcuffs. Please. >> He can't buckle me up. >> So, listen. This is the deal. If you keep fighting like this, my sergeant's on his way here and he has this device called the wrap. Okay? And it completely restrains you. >> Listen to me. You have to [laughter] listen to me. If you can't calm yourself down the way we are now, I am going to have to put you in that and I don't want to do that. I don't want to do that because we're calm and we're talking right now. Okay. So, we have to stop. >> Okay. You have to stop. Take some deep breaths. Let's do some grounding. Can we do some grounding? >> Officers try everything. But >> I understand that your [snorts] two options are this one. We're well, leave the door open so you can try to catch your breath. But what I'm telling you is if you're refusing to cooperate and be in handcuffs, the second alternative is way worse than this. >> Can you please just sit in the back with me? >> And once they lock the doors, >> I can sit in the front with you. >> Once they lock the doors, cuz it hurts. >> Okay. What? Here's Ellie. The reason why it's hurting is you keep moving your wrist. >> No, it hurts cuz your hand goes through them. Please just take them off of me. I can't wear them. >> It feels like I'm going to Utah. >> Allie. Allie. Allie. Stop. >> Ellie, if you do that one more time, I'm going to put you in the wrap. >> Stop it. >> Then please take the handcuffs off me. >> Then you're going to get put in the wrap. Those are your options. If you bang your head one more time, I'm going to put you in the wrap. >> Please take the handcuffs off. >> It's not going to happen. I can't wear Listen, >> I can't wear handcuffs. [screaming] >> The W is a last resort used only when someone becomes a danger to themselves or officers. It is not used lightly, but they're running out of options. >> Hey, where are the keys to your car? >> Is this your guys? >> So, >> I can't reach in my car. Somebody's got to do it in the car, which is probably going to be YouTube. >> So, I can follow >> You can't take it with me, though. My parents buy those. >> You can't take those from me. What began as a routine DUI investigation escalated into panic, resistance, and finally violence. The bite, the struggle, the wrap. Each moment layered the case with consequences that could not be undone. After she was transported to county, deputies documented every injury, every statement, [music] and every action captured on bodywn cameras, her breath tests, her emotional breakdowns, her physical resistance. All of it became evidence. Prosecutors later filed multiple charges, driving under the influence, possession of alcohol as a minor, resisting a peace officer, and several counts of aggravated battery, including the bite itself. Ellie spent the night in county. She did not get to call her parents when she wanted, and she did not leave until a judge reviewed her case the following morning. >> [music] >> The officers returned to their reports, logging every detail, knowing the footage would speak louder than any testimony. In the end, no officers suffered lasting injury. Ellie survived the night without medical complications, but the consequences of her actions [music] and the evidence captured on this camera will follow her into court. And as with every case, the individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
