I know we have a lot of units on, but we need to have this crime scene sec. >> Yeah. >> Officers now shift from the active incident to securing a large crime scene. They locate shell casings, mark areas where shots were fired, and close off surrounding streets while investigators are notified. According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, this incident began as a burglary in progress call on February 2nd, 2025, and ended with a fatal officer involved shooting near 1800 South Ridgeway Avenue. Officers reported that the armed suspect identified as Curt Kilbert ran from the scene, led them on a foot chase through residential alleys, and fired during the pursuit before being struck by police gunfire. He was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Cases like this show how quickly a property crime call can escalate when a firearm is involved, especially during a foot pursuit in a crowded neighborhood. Regardless of the circumstances, running with a gun and refusing clear commands puts everyone at risk. The public, the officers, and the individual themselves. Copa's investigation into this shooting is ongoing, and their findings will determine whether officers followed policy throughout the encounter.
