No, no, we're not going to have that fight. We're going to go here. >> You touched me first. >> No, let's go. Okay. 3 1 go. Go. >> On March 19th, 2024, a passenger on an American Airlines flight allegedly becomes so disruptive that other passengers [music] have to step in before police arrive. What starts as an argument on the plane quickly turns into a chaotic arrest. >> Thank you for coming. >> Police are here, so just comply or work out. All right, my man? >> As long as there's a lawyer for me. >> Yo, that's going to be legal. Sit, sit, legal, legal. That's >> All right. >> All right. >> All right, stand up. You're learning. >> I'm learning. You're going to help me. >> Come over, bend your knees. >> No. >> Get me standing up. >> 1 2 3 >> Get up. Let's go, let's go. Let's go. Go. >> Go, go. >> Go. >> Get out. >> Go, get out of the way. >> Get out of the way. >> Move. Bring your stuff out. Spread your feet. >> I want a lawyer. I want a lawyer right now. I want a lawyer. I have money to back it. >> All right. Other side. >> Now officers are dealing with a passenger who clearly has no interest in cooperating. Patel continues arguing while officers try to get him under control and off the plane. At this point, getting him away from everyone else becomes the priority. >> Guys, so light. >> You resist, man, it's going to get worse. >> I'm not even resisting, man. So, you hurt me >> Easy, buddy. You hurt me, sir. >> No, you didn't No, I'm not. This This human touching me that hurt me. >> Turn your wrist. Turn your wrist. >> This is not the best idea of moving me, you know that. I told them I would love to, and now this is what your airport does. I'm taking it to Supreme Court. I'll tell you that much, kiddo. Taking you all cops to Supreme Court. >> Face the wall. Face Spread your feet. Spread your feet. More. More. >> I'm burning it. >> All right, let's walk nicely, okay? >> Oh, why you doing that on the wall? I thought I thought this is freedom of speech uh freedom of speech country. I did not I did not violently hit someone before me. I'm just Okay. >> Officers begin speaking with the people who witnessed the confrontation to figure out what happened before they arrived. And considering the flight was still sitting on the ground, this is probably the last kind of delay anyone booked a ticket for. >> Oh. He got on and started talking to her, getting in her face, pointing at her, just like you guys. What is he doing? So disrespectful and >> I said, "What? I thought What is going on?" I was like Yeah. He just looked at me like he didn't know what he was doing. He seemed like you. You were just trying to get in my face, pointing at the guy, but then you're saying He was You're always It's always you. Like, you look at me funny, and you dismiss me again, and then And you turn the corner, and he was like, and he told me he said, "This This is my father." I think the guy was with him. The guy that's supposedly his father. And he walked away from his dad, and he's feeling up there. It was the weirdest thing. >> Terrible man. >> We later, we out. So now passengers are coming over after him going, "He's not well. Something's wrong with him." >> So basically from what you two said, you got alerted before boarding. People were boarding saying, "Hey, there's a guy back there." >> We could hear screaming. >> And it was in the jet bridge area. And then he came up here. He started like it was her. Started with her, but then continued down the aisle. >> Yeah. And then I followed. >> Okay. And when you followed, what happened? >> I followed. I asked him to get off. He told me no. I asked probably three or four times. And then at that point I was like, "Okay, I need to help." So I went to her. >> Okay. And then And then that was basically it. >> Pretty much until other people started getting involved. >> So then how did he get off? The other passengers >> They They pushed him. Other passengers shoved him. >> As officers continue investigating, Patel's behavior and the statements from those around him start painting a much bigger picture. What began as disruptive behavior is now being treated as a battery investigation. >> So how do you know him? >> He's my son. >> Okay. Do you know what was going on with him? Do you know why he was so angry? >> I have no idea. When we entered >> Were you on the plane with him or not? >> I was together. >> Okay. >> All the way. Maybe something related to racism or something. >> Oh. Directed toward him? >> Something like that. He must have heard about it and then he just got into argument. >> Okay. >> And then he went inside and then again he got into argument with somebody on the same issue and then And also the >> Were you with him when this happened? >> All All the time. >> Okay. He is being arrested right now for battery cuz he did strike somebody in here. Um they're taking his stuff off the plane and they're going to put it in baggage here, okay, at the airport here. So when he gets out of jail, he can come get his stuff at the baggage office if it's open cuz I understand this is an international flight. Is that right? >> Yeah. >> Okay. They asked him to leave numerous times on the plane. >> Yeah, they did that all the time cuz he was a little [ __ ] man. And he didn't wouldn't leave and they >> asked the captain and the gentleman on the jet bridge went on and asked him to leave as well. He wouldn't leave, so they had to escort him off. >> And that's when it got physical. >> Yeah, I got passenger hit him first, so that's why I think it got worse. >> He's going to go to jail. He has to bond out of jail if he wants to get out. Somebody has to pay money to make sure that he goes to court in the future to get him released from jail. If he doesn't post bond, that's what they call it, then he stays in jail. It's up to you. He can post bond himself. He has a probably a wallet, cell phone with him. He can post his own bond or you can do it for him. >> Patel is eventually taken into custody while officers finish securing his belongings and wrapping up the scene. The flight may only be delayed by about 30 minutes, but for Patel, the consequences are going to last considerably longer. >> So, you have a California driver's license, but your address >> It's in It's in Florida. It's in Florida. It's in Florida. >> But you have a California driver's license. >> That's right, and I'm also a USA naturalized citizen. >> So, do you live in >> And we got that part. We got We got that part. What do you say? >> Do you live in California or do you >> No, no, no. The address The address says Florida on it. We got right We got right We got it the right way. >> Well, I just want to see if you were violating current state law. >> No, no, I'm saying I got I got hit by I got hit by one of those I got hit by one of those one of those >> Okay. >> air >> Just want to confirm >> air guest of the airplane. I'll tell you that much. >> Want to check his socks. Want to check his feet first. Make sure there's nothing in his socks. >> Pull off your uh socks. >> Move forward. >> I want to go. >> Take your shoes off. >> Oh, hey, hey, hey, hey. >> Take your shoes off. >> Yeah, I will if you let it go. >> Take off your shoes. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the one. I got it. >> And we made sure that the review is good on all of them. >> Yep. >> This is my ticket, too. >> I'm not I'm not losing my ticket. Get that ticket back to me. I I had a flight ticket to my home in Florida. >> Sit down. >> Turn around. >> Lower your voices. >> Watch your head. Olsen? CR Olsen? All right. Let me call Gina. I don't even know. >> Shail Patel, 29, was arrested and charged with two counts of battery disorderly intoxication. According to the affidavit, Patel allegedly became aggressive toward passengers and crew, including making threats about taking the plane down. He was being held in Hillsborough County Jail on a $2,150 bond. So, what do you think? At what point should airline staff have called police?
