And I shut the door and he kicks the door literally in. So now I don't have front door and then he starts punching this glass and and around and honestly I'm just tired of this. I can't. >> That's all you did was busted the glass and came over here >> and yeah I mean never touched anybody. Never faithfully touched anything. Kids were not >> He did not do nothing. YOU DON'T KNOW YOU WEREN'T THERE. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> I'm going to TOUCH THE [ __ ] BABY. >> COME AT ME ONE MORE TIME. >> It's the evening of October 26th in Metropolis, Illinois. Officers are called to a reported domestic disturbance [music] after a woman says an argument with her boyfriend turned violent in front of her children. By the time police arrive, the suspect is gone. But as officers piece together what happened, the arrest they're expecting quickly becomes anything but routine. Where's up the road? I don't remember. >> Do you know what block? >> Uh I know they live on the same block as Dairy Queen. Like their house is like there's the brick house, a twotory house, and then >> Okay. >> But there'll be two Ford trucks and >> the Jeep. >> Okay. >> But um >> so so what happened? >> He went out drinking with his family. >> Okay. and he just got home. I went outside and knocked on his window and I'd seen that he was texting a girl saying, "I'll meet you right now." Okay. So, I'm like, "So, you're cheating on me?" "Okay, you can ask my kids." They saw him shoving me down out here. So, I come inside >> and I [snorts] shut the door and he kicks the door literally in. So, now I don't have a front door. >> And then he starts punching his glass and and [ __ ] around in. And honestly, I'm just tired of this. I can't. >> Yeah, >> I can't do this anymore. And if you come in, you can actually see where the door is actually off the [ __ ] hinges where he can't >> like all this like >> Oh, yeah. The door frames. >> Yeah. >> Like I can't, right? >> Yes. >> Officers first speak with the victim who explains that Sydney Adams had been drinking with family before coming home and parking outside with loud music playing. She says after noticing messages to another woman on his phone, she confronted him and the argument immediately escalated. >> I think you can articulate that you're scared of him. You know, you're fear danger >> and they will we'll serve him with it. He can't come back. You can list the kids. You can list whatever residence your job, whatever that he can't come within 500 ft of. If he does, then I mean, he's going to get arrested every time. It at least gives us legal teeth to be able to do something. >> All right. >> Cuz right now, like with him living here, you can't trespass him. >> Yeah. >> You can't kick him out because of the way that Illinois has residency set up. >> You have to evict him. And that takes 30, 60, 90, you know, however long. >> So, will the OP keep him away though? for whole. >> Well, I mean, if it doesn't, every time he violates it, he'll just get arrested >> because like >> So, eventually he either gets tired of getting arrested >> and he leaves you alone or the judge gets tired of him getting arrested and just keeps him in jail for a while. >> So, uh, so just real quick, tell me, I mean, I know you said you went out there and talked to him about, >> well, basically >> what was going on. So, what led up to the like he got out of the car? Like, tell me what happened after you knocked on the window and talked to him. Okay. Um, I called him and asked him if he was coming home cuz like here lately he's been going out a lot with his family. So I was like, "Okay, whatever." You know, have fun. So I call him and I'm like, "Hey, are you going to be home soon and he's like, "Yeah." So he's outside listening to music really loud. So I go out there and I'm like making sure he's okay. You know, and I read through the window him texting a girl saying he could would meet her anytime and all this other. So, um I knock on the window and I'm like, "So, you're cheating on me?" Like, for real? You know, I'm here with our kids and stuff and you're like on me. Like, are you serious? Okay. So, I come inside because he like gets out and like shoves me down out there and uh the kids are all >> shove you down now. Just >> like he gets out of the car and like shove >> your hand shove you. >> Yes. Like you can ask them. This is often this happens. Well, I come running inside cuz they're all like out on the porch and I'm like, "Get the inside." You know, like he is coming after me. This isn't the first time. >> When you spoke to the dispatcher, did he get all your information? >> Mhm. >> Okay. All right. Let me go get the statement form for you and then we'll get you filling that out. >> According to the victim, Sydney shoved her to the ground while her children watched from the porch. She rushed inside with the kids and locked the door, but says Sydney kicked it open, shattered the glass, and left the front entrance hanging off its hinges. By this point, officers aren't just investigating an argument. They're documenting a crime scene. Tell me >> what do you want to know? >> Tell me what happened. >> [ __ ] bust out my glass and came in your ear. >> What? bust out my front door glass. Mine, which is mine. Okay. >> And came over here. >> That's all you did was most of the glass and came over here. >> And yeah, didn't talk [ __ ] I mean, never touched anybody. Never faithfully touched anything. Kids were not. >> Why'd you blust the glass? >> Cuz she pissed me off. >> How'd she do that? cuz your eyes are in her mouth. >> What was she saying? >> Everything in other >> Okay. >> So, you drove over here? >> Nope. >> I went and got him. >> Yep. >> Well, I mean, at this time, you're going to be put under arrest for battery. >> Why? >> Because she's got a statement and then the kids have a statement that is exactly >> No, I'm not going to jail. >> You are. I'm not. >> You are. You are. Don't me. Don't fight me. You're going to tell you right now. >> You're going to get tased. >> You're going to get tased. You're about to get tased. >> I have to tell you right now, I'm not going to fight. >> Put your hands BEHIND YOUR BACK. >> PUT your hands behind your back. >> Don't fight. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Stop. >> No. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> You need to get out of >> Get out of the way before you go with us >> because you'll go for obstruction. >> Get out of the way. >> You can go to jail, too. >> No. No. >> He did not DO NOTHING. >> YOU DON'T KNOW YOU WEREN'T THERE. >> Put your hands behind your back. I'm going to touch THESE B ONE MORE TIME. >> Get out of the way or you're going to go with us. Move. >> Give me your hands. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND your back. >> Put your hands behind your back. PUT YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK. >> Send me. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> You won't stop. >> GET AWAY FROM US NOW. >> Just >> put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind YOUR BACK. I CAN'T ROLL OVER. ROLL OVER. You're going next. And >> you're going to go too. >> He's trying. >> You're going to go to jail, too, if you don't stop. You got right in our damn way. That's called obstructing. >> That's my son. >> And >> And the point of it is that's my son. >> And you got in our way. >> I did not get in your way. >> You got right. >> You stood RIGHT IN THE BETWEEN >> AND I MOVED. >> YOU KNOW WHAT? AND YOU stepped right back in >> because you guys Oh my god. >> Go back inside. You want to take her, too? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You're under arrest, too. Don't go inside. >> I mean, I'll come in and get you. It's fine. >> We'll just report get a warrant for her if you don't come out here. >> Officers eventually track Sydney down at his parents' home and begin asking about the incident. While he admits breaking the glass, he denies ever assaulting the victim. But after comparing his story with the evidence gathered [music] at the scene, officers decide they have probable cause to arrest him. That's when the conversation [music] ends and the resistance begins. >> Come out here, ma'am. >> Come out here. >> Come out here. You're under arrest. >> We're trying to take >> Oh my god. >> You're under arrest for obstructing. >> I did not. >> Yes, you did. >> You did. Put your hands behind your back. >> Step out here. >> I'm right here. >> Okay. Step out. Put your hands behind your back. >> Oh my god. Are you >> Yes. >> You're under arrest for obstructing. >> I tried to tell you. >> Don't get in our way. >> I didn't. He was hurt. That is >> He was not hurt. >> Will you please loosen this >> when we get to the car? >> Stop. >> I will loosen them when we get to the car. I promise you that. >> You won't go into the car with them that time. >> Don't fight. >> HE'S ASTHMA. >> OKAY. So that for me quit fight. >> Well, now you got a resisting charge on top of the obstruction. >> I'm not either. I'm not resisting. I WAS WALKING TO MY BACKYARD. >> I GOING TO SAY, let me have her. You know, I'll get her to cool down. >> No, she's going to jail. Fine. Okay, I got you. >> Would you? >> She got right >> and now she got >> here. Roll over. Roll over to your side. Pull your feet up. >> Would you quit? Get my >> Yes, you can get your shoes. >> God, that's He like that. >> God >> see somebody musling around. Okay. >> What >> you have you like muscle around? >> Okay. >> I can calm her down. >> Would you please? >> These are hurting my wrist. They are >> If you stop fighting, they won't hurt as bad. >> I was just pull away from me again. You're going to go to the ground again. >> Let's go. Stop it. >> Steve, stop. >> This is hurting. >> Stop fighting and it will not hurt you. This is a This is cut my wrist. >> Just when officers are getting Sydney under control, the situation takes another turn. His mother steps in and [music] interferes with the arrest, forcing deputies to split their attention between two people instead of one. Never a great strategy when police are already trying to secure a resisting suspect. [music] Let me know in the comments how do you think this situation should have been handled. >> He wouldn't give us a story of anything that like she could have done. So he's goes all it is is he goes before the judge. The judge decides by her statement >> and his statement >> in court >> if charges are necessary. >> Right. >> That's all it was going to be >> for >> until we're ended up this way. >> Godamn. >> Yeah. >> And I understand he's intoxicated. That plays a part in it. >> I get it. >> But he can't lunge at me. >> I I got you on that. I mean >> that's just unacceptable. We can't lie. >> The mother are lying, Dad. >> I need it. It It really was going to be plain and simple. He goes >> tell the [ __ ] >> sits in the jail >> and it goes from there. >> Right now, he would sit in the in jail probably until tomorrow. >> They do the pre-trial release stuff like that. It wasn't going to be that big a deal. >> And it I mean, it is now cuz he's going to have >> Did you see him do any of the violence things >> down there? >> Or is that just her word against you? Yeah, it's her statements. That's what I'm saying. Her statements >> and it's the kids statements and that's why it goes in front of a judge. >> Okay. >> We do the law enforcement. The charges come from the state attorney. >> When can he get out? >> Well, you know, Illinois has gotten rid of bond, >> so he'll have to see a judge because with domestic battery, you got to see a judge >> Monday morning. >> And so, it depends on sometimes they'll zoom them, sometimes it'll be it may be Monday morning. Monday morning. Are we going to do it tomorrow? Could be. Okay. >> Try to, but your [ __ ] police officer >> want to take me to jail anyways. >> Stop it. You already knew what was going to happen if she filed a complaint. >> No, there's noing reason the mother be here. Period. I don't give a anything. Never punched her. I understand. I ain't do to any one of them. They're [ __ ] little on the police force. >> Say it. >> The ambulance is here. Are you going to talk to them? >> Yeah. >> I'd rather talk to them than you. >> So, she'll probably be released tonight. >> Okay. Um, like I said, with the whole new the no bond, >> it's got to be pretty pretty serious to get to get help. Now, domestic does >> potential danger to both parties. It's an automatic hold, >> but most other things she'll get a citation with a court date >> and the jail will release her. You'll be able to go pick her up tonight or whatever. >> Okay? >> She can call you from up there once the jailers are done. processor get >> and then she just has to go to she'll get a failure to appear >> warn you >> don't listen those [ __ ] >> by this stage everyone has their own version of how things unfolded [music] but from an investigative standpoint officers have to focus on the actions they can actually document not the arguments that come afterward once the encounter turned physical the case became about far more than the original domestic call in the end it's often the decisions made during an arrest that carry the biggest consequences. >> And we're going to help you get up and then we're going to get on this bed and this bed's going to take you out to the hospital so the doctor can check you out and get that last taser probe out. >> Oh, great. I got a last taser. >> Yeah, you have a you have a >> I got a good reason. See y'all. >> Now we're going to roll over. >> Roll towards me. There you go. >> Bring your knees up. Swing your booty around so you're in this seat for me. They're going to help you. >> I want their help. >> Hold on. >> Hey, the hospital's help for these. >> You're going to get the hospitals out. >> All right, Sydney. I got to put your legs under. Okay. Even after the handcuffs are on, Cydney's attitude doesn't change. As paramedics try to get him onto the stretcher to remove the taser probe and medically clear him for jail, he continues insulting everyone around him. Despite the verbal abuse, EMS stays focused on doing exactly what they came there to do. >> You lose anything? >> No. >> Okay. >> We're taking him to the hospital getting cleared for jail. Plus, he's got a probe stuck in his shoulder, so they're going to pop that out. Uh once your wife gets processed, >> she should be able to get picked up. >> Okay. >> I mean, if you can drive or whatever, I mean, I don't know. >> I'm fine. I got >> I said if you're able to able to drive, >> so I'd give it They might have to wait for me to get there and I got to go with them. I may be able to lie, but all I got to do with her is process her printer picture. >> I got it. >> But she cannot get in our way like that because I got everybody in risk of injury. It's bad enough. We have to fight him. Okay. >> I understand it totally. I do stuff like that. We don't know you guys from anybody. We don't want somebody coming out here with a gun or a bat or something like that. So, no one fight somebody's everything goes goes sideways. So, >> Sydney Adams, 27, was charged with domestic battery, resisting arrest. So, what do you think? Did Sheila Adams make the situation worse by getting involved, or was the [music] outcome unavoidable once Cydney Adams began resisting?
