On the evening of May 13th, 2021, officers with Baltimore's District Action Team have located a stolen Nissan Rogue SUV that had been carjacked earlier that day. As officers approach the vehicle, the suspect drives off. Standing in his way is Officer Trainee Thomas Smith. Smith has less than a year on the force and is currently in field training under a qualified and he is just seconds from finding out if he has what it takes to become [music] one of Baltimore's finest in a real-world worst-case scenario. Here we see Smith exit a patrol car directly into the path of the fleeing suspect. FROM THIS ANGLE, YOU CAN SEE SMITH being impacted by the vehicle and hear him fire two shots while he is on the hood. Here in slow motion, we can see that almost as soon as the trainee unholsters his weapon, the vehicle is on him and he fires two shots, striking the suspect in the hand and shoulder. And here, in the side mirror of the patrol car, we can see the shots fired by Trainee Smith. After being hit, Officer Trainee Smith absorbs the impact of the vehicle, lands on his feet and continues to pursue the suspect on foot. The Baltimore Police Department helicopter, code-named Foxtrot, captures the entire incident. As officers open the door of the SUV, the suspect speeds off, striking Trainee Smith and then continuing on at high speed. >> Fox, he just hit an officer. He's headed towards Collington. Headed towards Collington. He's going to be going across Mira. Westbound Mira. Coming up to Chester Street. Still westbound. He's going to be in the parking lot now. 1200 block of Preston Street in the rear. Cut across. Coming up to Preston Street now. He just hit another car. He's going to be bail out. 1200 block of Preston. >> As the suspect flees on foot, Fox Trout maintains constant visual contact and guides officers to his exact location. >> Unit coming in the back. God, make your left right there. He's going to be in that first cut between the two homes there. Yeah, 10-4. Right in that cut right there. That's where he's going to be. Right there. 10-4. He's going to be right on the left-hand side. All right, they're making contact with him now. Looks like 2003 Hoffman. >> What do you think? Does trainee Smith have what it takes to be a member of the force? Were his actions becoming of a police officer? Should he be made a full-time member of the Baltimore Police Department? Let us know in the comments and thank you for watching this episode of Justice in America. Stay safe.
