I'm an AG. >> On the night of the 14th of August, 2025 at 9:57 p.m., officers with the Newport, Rhode Island Police Department respond to a report of an intoxicated woman refusing to leave an upscale Newport restaurant. As the police arrive on the scene, they are met with two women, Veronica Hannon, who the call was originally for, and Devon Flanagan, who, as officers will soon learn, is a Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General. An Assistant Attorney General is a lawyer who is employed by the state of Rhode Island specifically within the Attorney General's Office, representing the state's interests, prosecuting crimes, and handling the state's legal matters under the elected Attorney General. >> I want you to see what my body camera protocol is, that you turn it off when you There is an request, it's to turn it off. >> So they want you guys to leave? >> Yes, we are. >> Let's just leave. I understand you don't want to deal with it, but the protocol is and your protocol is if I ask you to turn off the body cam, you have to turn it off. And that's your protocol. >> Flanagan repeatedly tells officers that it is mandatory that they shut their body worn cameras off, claiming protocol requires that if a citizen requests it, officers must turn off their body cams. This is incorrect. The policy allows officers to turn off their cameras when speaking to a witness or a victim of a crime and does not allow for an officer to turn off their camera at the request of a suspect. The statewide body worn camera policy was adopted by the Rhode Island Attorney General's office in 2022, of which she was an employee. >> lawyer, so she knows. >> Well, that's lawyer stuff, so that's not true. THIS IS SO INAPPROPRIATE. YOU'RE YOU'RE OVERREACTING. BABE. [screaming] >> VERONICA HANNAN WAS charged with willful trespassing, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. She pled no contest to resisting arrest, and prosecutors dropped her two other charges. She's also been barred from returning to the Clark Cook House restaurant. The case was filed for 6 months, which means that the case can be dismissed if she stays out of trouble. Devon Flanagan, the Assistant Attorney General, was charged with willful trespassing, to which she pled no contest. She was barred from returning to the Clark Cook House, and her case was also filed for 6 months. Flanagan's boss, Acting Attorney General Peter Neronha, met with and apologized to the officers on behalf of his office and said Flanagan mistreated the Newport Police Department and embarrassed herself, the office, and frankly, me. She was placed on 6 months of unpaid leave. What do you think? Was this an abuse of power by the AG? Did the police overreact? Was Flanagan's punishment appropriate? Let us know what you think in the comments and thank you for watching this episode of Justice in America. Stay safe.
