On July 29th, 2025, at approximately 5:30 in the morning, Wheaton police were dispatched to a Pace bus stop after a caller reported someone yelling, "Guns out!" and shouting vulgar comments at people walking by. When officers arrived, they immediately recognized the individual as someone they had already dealt with just hours earlier at the same location. Officers remained in the area to monitor the situation, but just over an hour later, the encounter escalated and would soon put the officers in a dangerous position. And what happens next quickly turns from a simple disorderly behavior to a felony arrest. They don't want you on the bus. Okay. So, I don't want you on my bus. You're going to have to step off the bus. I already know. Are you trying to get to your court date? Good job. Put the flame out. Okay. So, don't light the bus on fire. Okay. What's up? I'm at the end of Of what? The murder. THE MURDER! YEAH! OKAY. OH, THEY CAN HEAR YOU. They can [ __ ] hear you. Who's that? I don't Well, we're yelling, yes, so we can hear you. The police report states that Ramirez paid just 50 cents of the required $2.25 fare and refused to pay the rest. Because of this, the driver asked that she be removed from the bus. Okay. You're a little short. A little short for the fare. It's $2.25. Do you have the rest of the money? What would you like to pay? I already paid. If you paid him the 225 I already [ __ ] paid him. It's not going to work that way. Right, so So you You can go [ __ ] off. Well, yeah. We're going to have to end up removing you off this bus. No, you really can't. Yeah, you got to pay the full fare. You can go [ __ ] off. So, they're going to want you removed from the bus. >> [ __ ] up. Well, this is how it's going to work. >> You can go get [ __ ] up. >> If you didn't pay the full fare You can go get [ __ ] up. You can go get [ __ ] up. You can go get [ __ ] up. But you didn't. I The driver told us otherwise, so I did. Stop lighting the bus on fire. Hey, put the lighter out. This is where things take a serious turn. As officers moved in to stop Ramirez from igniting the bus seat, she suddenly stood up and lunged toward Officer DeNovo, coming within approximately 3 ft of him. The police report states that her actions placed the officer in fear of being battered, forcing him to quickly move backward to create distance before attempting to detain her. Put the lighter out. PUT THE LIGHTER OUT. NOW. PUT THAT BACK UP. BACK UP. SIT DOWN ON THAT BENCH. I DID. SIT DOWN ON THE BENCH. NOW. SIT DOWN. BACK UP. SIT DOWN. TURN AROUND. Turn around right now. Turn around. Turn around. Turn around. Get off the bus. Get off the bus. Let go of the bar. You are under arrest. You can fight me. All right. That's fine. Don't fight. >> Stand up. Stand up. As seen in the footage and detailed in the police report, Ramirez attempted to bite Officer Cusack on the forearm during the struggle. While at the squad car, officers attempted to ID her, but the name she provided didn't return any records. And much like the earlier interaction that morning, she continues making nonsensical statements and mumbling to herself. What's your name, miss? Jennifer? Jennifer, what's your last name? Ramirez. Ramirez? Vargas. What's your hyphenated last name? Vargas? Vargas. V A R G A S? Is that right? Is that right? Vargas with Z at the end. Do you have something in the lining of your pants? What are you saying? Can you be helpful to my people? Okay. We've been trying to help you all night. All right, we'll try to help you. I want to go. You do? Okay, I'll open the door. Yep. Wait, is there anything I can do to get anything back for my iPhone? >> to expose like she doesn't have underpants on, so I couldn't like get What When I did that, she said, "Please don't do it to them." So, I don't know if she's got something. With Ramirez now secured in the patrol vehicle, attention turns back to the bus where the primary officer exits to speak with the driver. Did you get that bus driver's name, Officer? Yeah. I just >> take this Close to the back of the monitor, and that's where I like Yeah, I know. I tried to do this job before. She's the bus driver? Yes, sir. All right. If you guys need all the insurance information on the bus, it's behind the seat back there. I can show you Uh yeah, I'm going to get it because she was taking the lighter to the bus seat. So, if there is anything, um yeah, in the back, she's like lighting the two seats in front of her. That's the first trip. I'll uh show you back where she had the lighter, just in case there was something that we missed. So, I can't say for sure. We may charge her with criminal damage to property. So, Well, on the bright side, it's only probably going to get better. >> [laughter] >> According to the police report, after being transported to the Wheaton Police Department, Ramirez was advised of her Miranda rights and requested an attorney. She was charged with a felony charge of aggravated assault to a peace officer, in addition to a list of several misdemeanor complaints. What began as a call about a person yelling at pedestrians ultimately escalated into criminal charges. What are your thoughts on this case?
