Are you okay to drive? Yes. Are you sure? Yes. So, you can't really stand straight. >> In February of 2025, around 7:30 in the morning, officers were dispatched to Brookhaven Market after a woman crashed into a pole. When they arrived, they found her vehicle parked in the middle of four parking spaces and observed her stumbling through the lot. As the officer made contact, she could barely stand upright, leaning on her vehicle for balance and behaving very strangely. Despite denying she had been drinking, her performance on field sobriety tests and what officers later found inside her purse tells a very different story. And by the end of this stop, the breath test result would reveal just how extreme her level of intoxication [music] truly was. Everything okay? So, did you hit anything when you drove in here today? So, we got a call that you hit a pole in here. You okay? You see the damage to the car your car? You want to look at it? This is new damage or is old? Right. You want to go look at this, though? Yeah. Did you see Did you see this? According to the police report, surveillance footage from Brookhaven Market shows the woman, Anna, turning into the parking lot where she allegedly ran a stop sign and drove into the opposite lane of traffic before crashing directly into a pole. Her vehicle remained stuck against the pole for approximately a minute and a half before she eventually pulled away and continued through the parking lot. Did you do that today? Can you tell me where it's from? Everything okay? Yes. Are you on any medications or anything? No. No? So, can you tell me how you got that? Do you need a crash report or anything? There was just an accident. You You're okay to drive, though? Yes. Okay. So, what kind of medication is it you're on? Noticing her difficulty keeping her balance, the officer is blunt about his observations. You know, sure. Cuz you can't even stand up straight right now. You know, you can't drive the car. How much have you had to drink today? I didn't drink. You didn't drink anything? No. Um is there anyone at home right now? Or is it just you by yourself? Are you still on care? Yes. >> Are you Isn't your name Anna? Yeah. Okay. You want to have a seat just in your passenger car for me real quick? What happened here? Is this new damage, too, or was this old? That's old. >> Old? You want to have You want to have a seat in your passenger seat for me? Yeah. Okay. Are you okay? Do you need help? Just have a seat in the passenger seat. You can close the door, okay? Just don't lock it on me, all right? So, I'm just going to close the door. I don't want you to be too cold, okay? So, just stay here for a second, okay? The officer requests assistance, noting a possible DUI. I had a 30 from 1 I made. Can you make Can you make your way towards my stuff? Right in front of her car. I'm on board. Ma'am, do you have your driver's license on you? Could I see it? Driver's Your driver's license, yeah. Yeah. And then do you have your insurance card, too? What kind of insurance do you have? You can't find it? It's not in there? That one's from 2021. Do you have one from this year? That one's 2023, getting closer. Are there any more in that pile that you have in your hand? 2021, 2021. Is there any more in on your lap that you can find? As you'll hear later, the officer spots a current proof of insurance card on top of the pile, but she keeps digging through expired papers, only confirming the officer's suspicions. July 2024. January 2024. Do you have any other ones you have? What about the ones on your lap? Is there anything there? 2022. Do you like to collect these? You can throw these out when they're expired. Uh are there any more on your lap that you want to I'll give you a couple minutes to look for that, then, okay? You can have these back. That one is 2022. 2022. So, here. Uh put these over by your cup holder or something so you don't look at those. Try to find a new one for me, okay? With his sergeant on scene, the officer approaches to relay the details. So, a caller saw her crash into that pole. She made a turn in here. It's bent. >> Yeah. She has pretty good damage to the front right of her car, too. I I recorded when she was walking out cuz she's like walking funny. I had her sit in the car just cuz it's cold out and I want to see if I can get any stronger scent of anything. Um I asked her how much she had to drink today. She said, "Nothing." But, I mean, she can barely walk, so I think we should put her through some fields too, at least. Maybe like DWI or something. So. Or DUI drugs. But, her insurance card was right on top there. The that one that's current. So, but she just keeps handing me expired ones. I want to go run her real quick, though. >> After running Anna's information, the officer moves on to the field sobriety tests. And you guessed it, balance and coordination are nowhere to be found. All right, Anna, you can step out of the car for me, okay? Can you step out of the car? Okay. Come on out. Car 28, Andrew 15 going 1152079, 1152079. Car 28, 10-55. Yes. Okay. Negative 30, 10-4. So, I want you to do a couple of things for me just to show that you're okay to drive home. Is that right? Okay. So, here. I'm going to have you face this way. I don't want the sun in your eyes, okay? You want to turn face me over this way? Can you stand over here, or do you have to lean against the car? Okay. Can you take your glasses off for me then? I saw there was like some red spots in your eyes. Is that normal? Red spots? Yes. That's normal? It's always like that? Yeah. Okay. Um So, can you take your glasses off for this test for me? Can you take those off? So, what I want you to do The officer begins with the eye stimulus test, a simple task that quickly proves to be anything but easy. Only move your eyes. Keep your head straight. Look at my finger. Still look at it, though. Keep looking at my finger. I'm so cold. Okay. It'll be a couple more minutes, all right? And despite the struggle, things only get more and more difficult for Anna as the tests continue. Okay, I'm going to go up now, okay? Keep looking at my finger. Okay. Are your eyes okay? They don't hurt or anything? No? No. Okay. Next one we're going to do we're going to do a walk test, okay? Want to stand right over here for me? I told you. You want to go right over here for me? Either these are the most complicated instructions ever given or Anna probably shouldn't be behind the wheel. Your other foot, your left foot. Okay. So, here's the Stand right here for me. So, you're going to put your left foot on that line. Do you need to use me for balance? Yes. Okay. So, you get Now put your right foot in front of your left foot. Okay. Yeah, we're going to go in the car. Okay, go ahead sit in there. Watch your head. Careful. Let me get your seat belt. I'm going to buckle you in. Before searching her vehicle for any open containers or contraband, the officer briefs his sergeant on how the situation unfolded. >> So, she like kind of walked around to the back of the car. And that's when I approached her and I was like, "Hey, I'm like, is everything okay?" I'm like, "I saw that there's damage to the front of your car. Did you know that?" And it took her a minute just to even walk up to the front of the car. She kind of just like slowly waddled to the front. She said Yeah. Yeah. I guess it's a small straw or a bottle Yeah. During the search, officers recover an empty package of THC gummies along with additional items that could explain her condition. Gummies. I didn't check her purse on her. Do this at the station. After being transported to the police department, she agreed to a breath test. The result came back at 0.308 blood alcohol concentration, nearly four times the legal limit.
