Drop the gun. Drop the gun. DROP THE GUN. >> HELLO, I'M OFFICER AARON BOLLAND, ONE OF THE public information officers with the Scottsdale Police Department's Community Engagement Unit. >> On April 30th, 2026, officers responded to what appeared to be a routine call. Within moments, a woman allegedly pointed a firearm at an officer, turning the encounter into a deadly confrontation. What happened next is now the subject of an officer-involved shooting investigation. >> The incident occurred inside the front lobby of the McCaleb's District Station, which is open to the public during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Inside the lobby is a seating area with a row of chairs, an information window, and another window separated by a partition for the Vehicle Impound Program housed out of the McCaleb's District. At around 9:40 a.m. on April 30th, a woman entered the lobby with a backpack and set it on a chair in the sitting area near the information window. At about 9:45 a.m., the woman opened her backpack and retrieved a handgun from inside. She then walked toward the information window and pointed the handgun at the station police aid, who was seated behind the protective glass. After the woman pointed the gun at the police aid, the police aid retreated to a safe area and used her radio to call for assistance. Next, the woman walked over to the Vehicle Impound window and pointed the gun at the man who was seated there. He was cornered and unable to escape the situation. The incident was captured on surveillance video from the lobby. The surveillance video does not have audio. The police aid at the information window also had a department-issued body-worn camera, which she activated and faced out into the lobby and then left the window. Here is the incident as it unfolded with a view from the surveillance footage and the police aid's body worn camera. >> She has her person at the income window at gunpoint. >> Some officers were inside the Mcaleb station attending to administrative matters. They immediately responded to the radio call from the police aid of the woman pointing the gun at people in the front lobby and they moved to contact her. >> I'll try to contact her. >> DROP THE GUN. DROP THE GUN. WHAT? >> ONE RESPONDING sergeant was the first to get into a small hallway between a set of doors separating the lobby from the rest of the building. Once there, he issued loud, clear commands for the woman to drop the gun. The sergeant was soon joined by other officers and fearing for the safety of the innocent man still inside the lobby, they moved to contact the woman in there. After opening the door to the lobby, the sergeant again gave loud, clear commands for the woman to drop the gun. She did not drop the gun. Instead, she pointed it at the sergeant and the responding officers coming through the door. The sergeant then used his duty pistol to shoot the woman to stop her from being a threat to the officers and the innocent man still inside the lobby. >> Drop the gun. Drop the gun. DROP THE GUN. >> [music] >> ONCE THE WOMAN WAS SHOT, SHE FELL TO THE ground and dropped the gun. The responding officers immediately rushed to secure her, secure the gun, rescue the innocent man, and begin rendering aid to the woman. The woman was identified as 23-year-old Ava Josefina Garcia. She was transported to the hospital after being shot. She was in the hospital under protective custody for 12 days until her release. She was then booked into jail on several felony charges.
