On January 9th, 2025, officers with the Orange City Police Department responded to a RaceTrac convenience store after surveillance footage allegedly caught an employee pocketing cash from customer transactions. Once on scene, the officer speaks with the store manager who advises that the employee is late for work, completely unaware of what's waiting for her once she arrives to clock in. >> What's up, man? Can you call? >> All right. I'm Officer with the Orange City. What's going on? >> Uh I have an employee that was stealing. >> Okay. >> that. And then my my supervisor, she should be here shortly and stuff like that. And then I guess they they want to press charges on [music] her. >> Okay. When are they going to be here? >> I'm going to call right now. >> Yeah. >> She said about 10 to 15 minutes. Uh she said that the amount that roughly is about $900. And they said they said that they actually want to press the >> $900? Okay. Do they all have this on like paper? >> They said that they're going to have it all compiled once she gets here and stuff like that. >> Do you know if it's like cash or is it like >> That, I don't know. And I was here yesterday. She called me cuz I guess she got a phone call from Orange County. And I guess that she got a fraudulent transaction. So they wanted to do a deep dive to see what was going on. And I guess they got her on camera stealing money. >> Okay. Do you know the employee's name? >> Yes. >> What time is she going to be here? >> She should be here in a little bit, in a couple minutes. She's scheduled to be here at 1:30. >> And I'm sure like you guys are going to fire her, right? >> Most likely, yeah. She just texted me. She said she's going to be a little bit late. But as soon as she's here, I'll I'll send her your way as soon as >> All right. Well, we want to talk to the manager before you guys talk to All right. Yeah. Before confronting the perp, who still has not yet showed up for work, the officer speaks with the supervisor who provides much more detail. >> This guy here quick. The DM was on the phone for like 15 10 15 minutes with uh non-emergency. >> Uh-huh. >> And I was like, I guess call 911. I was like, it's not like a emergency. I feel bad. And then he literally texts me. He's like, he's here. He's asking me questions. I was like, why are you freaking out? >> So, what's going on? >> So, this girl, she's knocking sales. That's what we call it. So basically she's ringing up the transaction, she's voiding the transaction like it never happened, accepting the person's cash, >> Uh-huh. >> opening the register, putting it in there, and later putting it in her pocket. >> And then the customer walks out with the items? >> With the items. >> With the items, okay. So she'd put it in the register and then >> Yep. So you you pay me for $100 worth of stuff. >> Uh-huh. >> I ring it up so you can see the total on the register and then I void it >> Uh-huh. >> so there's nothing on the register and then I just open the register so it'll pop open. I put the hundred in there to finalize the transaction and I do the math, whatever change I got to give you, I give you the change and you're on with your happy day. >> Okay. >> And then later when nobody's looking I take the money and cuz that transaction never happened. >> And you'd have all this on video and stuff? >> Yep. >> Okay. Um >> So we have it so so it gets hit twice. It gets hit with cash and it also gets hit with product. So inventory with the like the department of inventory already >> because when they let's say they get a drink or whatever, they didn't pay it but they're still walking out the door. So you're out the money and the product. >> I got it. >> So loss prevention is already like they've already started the email. I'm really here to have the conversation, file the report with you. >> I'm good. >> Um >> Are y'all going to terminate her or what? I mean that's on you guys, but >> Yeah, I'm terminating her but um definitely I'm >> time is she supposed to be here? 1:30? All right, well she's already late so that shows you something. >> Is Diane >> I don't know, I think so. >> Hi. >> Hi. Hello. >> All right, can we view the video? >> Yes. Prime light. >> Huh? >> Go ahead with it? Yeah. >> Yeah, let's go look at the footage. >> Have you ever have you ever had a loss prevention interview? >> Yep. >> Like that they take one? >> Yep. I've never done >> When did this start? >> So she's been with us since November. They got flagged with loss prevention the first week. So this is on the fourth. Um so what I'm going to provide and loss prevention already has like copies too, is like more data of like her shifts that were worked, also like a transaction journal on our side on shows like how many times voids were done. And then pretty much that gets narrowed down cuz some of the voids are real. Like oops, I rung up too many, it's a void. But a lot of them aren't not true. So if I can ballpark it few weeks. I don't think a month. >> She's been with you since November of 2024. >> Yes. >> So. >> Okay, let me just show you the video. So, guest is there, rings up, and grabs the money. She voids out the transaction. So, oh, it says it right there. But here, you see there's nothing on there. There's no >> And that's where the product usually goes? >> Mhm. And then and then later she puts the money to the side. Puts the money in her hand, and then she's putting >> Can you try to get that video to work? I know it's hard, but >> I just wanted to show you >> I just wanted like just see her put it in her pocket. >> The supervisor then takes the officer to the back of the store to review the surveillance footage. But as they begin watching the video, the situation takes an unexpected turn when the employee herself walks into the room, unaware that she's about to be confronted with what's on screen. >> And this is with what like lotto tickets and cigarettes and alcohol and >> Everything. So right now she has lotto and cigarette tickets. So she collected all the money. >> Correct. >> I'm pretty sure she started with like small, but >> Like a dollar here and there and >> In the last 10 days it's been like a lot of pocketing. So I think she's been doing it for a few weeks. >> So if they need to change, she's counting change out in her head type of thing right now? >> Mhm. >> Okay. That's the money that she gave her, right? She didn't put it in the drawer. I just saw her take money out of the drawer, too. So what's she doing now? >> You know, that's interesting. That's the night manager. Riley. >> Yes, ma'am. >> I think the night manager might be involved in this. too. >> Night manager is never on the clock. >> Yeah. >> Right here, does she put it in her pocket? >> So, she didn't put anything there? >> Not yet. So, she put it on the side and nobody is there, that's when we take it. Like when nobody is >> All right. >> Hey, that's so loud. So loud. I'm so sorry. >> Does that hurt? I didn't mean to hurt you. >> Hey. How you doing? >> I'm good. >> It's all right now. >> Okay. >> So, all the money's in the register right now. >> Right now, yeah. So, that last spot that you see with cash in it is typically empty. We don't have bills that go there. But the card transaction she can't do it because there's >> You You're not going >> And if we did, it would just go right back. >> After that awkward moment, the officer has seen enough to move forward with the arrest, but this isn't the only charge that she catches today, as officers have no idea that she's carrying something she never intended to be found. What's your name? >> Tiffany. >> Where did she go? Where did she go? Okay, you. What's going on, ma'am? Come on. >> Are you serious? I can't >> Yeah. Put your hands behind your back. >> Hold on. Okay, I can really quick >> Nope. Nope, put that bag down. I don't know what's in the bag. >> It's safe. All right. 11 27 10 12. Adult female 10 12. Adult female 10 12. You know why we're here? >> No. >> Okay. Okay. Have a seat. Uh you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. Do you understand these rights? >> Yes. >> With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me? >> Um I want to talk to my attorney. >> You want to talk to your attorney? Okay. You said you want your uh co-worker to pick up? >> Yeah. >> Where's your phone? Yeah, there's uh somebody's coming to search you. Okay. All right. And then we'll take off your jacket then. So, all right. Where's your co-worker at? >> Um he's at my house. >> Um yeah, we can give him the phone, too. Call him to pick it up. What's your uh co-worker's name so we can get him on the phone? Okay. You know the number? >> No. I don't have it on my person. >> Is the bag Is your phone in your bag? >> No, it's in my pocket. >> Right here? >> Yep. >> Hello? >> Hello. >> So, I just got arrested. I need you to come pick up my bag. I'm at work. Well, my ex-job now, but yeah. Just don't say anything until I speak to my lawyer, please. Just come and get my bag. >> Where are you? >> I'm at I'm in front of the jail. >> Okay. I'm coming right now. >> Thank you. >> There's going to be a Like I said, there's a female coming to search you, okay? You have anything on you that might get you in trouble? No? Okay. >> Her answer to that question is no, but the female officer mentioned should have done a more thorough search. As they'll later find out, this was a lie. >> So, over From the first to She's done this 911 I got um They're going to email this to me now? >> Yep. >> Perfect. And then just put on behalf of RaceTrac we do wish to pursue charges. >> All right. >> You got your ID back. I gave you the business card. All right. You swear and affirm everything's true and correct to the best of your knowledge? >> Yes. >> Okay. All right. Perfect. Yep. >> Appreciate it. >> Yep. >> Thank you. Invent the land. >> Can I just ask what she's getting arrested for? >> Grand theft. >> Grand theft. It's on a warrant, is it? >> Nope. >> No. He said grand theft was the MO. >> Uh tell him to read the report. >> He said read the report. Uh I'm sorry. He said amount. I'm sorry, not MO. >> Yeah, he can find it on the report. I'm not I don't have to give any information out. >> Okay. He said Do you guys have a bond amount off the top of your head, sir? >> 2,500. >> I'm sorry. >> 2,500. >> 2,500. >> I'm sorry it took me so long. I don't know why I thought they said Yankee 71, so I'm like >> No worries. >> And then I was like, swear they said North Volusia. Then I saw that that was you, I was like, I'm an idiot. >> No worries. >> Yeah. >> What's that? >> My headphones. >> Your headphones? Okay. Turn around and face the car. This deputy's going to search you. >> Oh my gosh, you have everything. Holy smokes. >> Yeah, I'll get it back to you. Yeah, I know. >> You want all this stuff in there for right now cuz she Okay. >> Yeah, I'll take care of that stuff. All right. Then I'll just let you Do you want her earrings and stuff on? >> Dude, you want to come out here? I think they're going to take them off anyway, right? Yeah, I don't know. Just take them >> Do you want her necklace off? You want her necklace off? >> Yeah, cuz they're going to take that too, right? >> I mean, they'll give it back to you, but they're they're going to make you take it off. You know what I mean? What? >> I'm here. >> Yep. Yep. Watch your head. >> All righty, thank you. >> No problem. >> Appreciate you. >> The woman was charged with grand theft for allegedly pocketing cash from customer transactions over multiple weeks, resulting in an estimated loss of around $970. However, the situation escalated further during intake at the Volusia County Branch Jail, where money fell from her waistband, and as a corrections officer picked it up, they discovered a crushed blue pill concealed within the folded bills. That discovery resulted in an additional charge for smuggling contraband into a county detention facility. What are your thoughts on this case?
