Sheriff Rick Harold later addressed the incident and the deputy's actions. Quote, "It is important to understand that Missouri law requires specific and articulable facts such as visible intoxication or possession before law enforcement may lawfully detain a juvenile." In this case, those legal thresholds were not met. Additionally, body camera footage confirms that the deputies had no direct contact with the young individuals who were later involved in the fatal crash. In August 2025, the parents of Rachel Grace Nelden, a 23-year-old woman killed in the crash while driving the other vehicle, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and several deputies. The suit alleges deputies failed to intervene and allowed impaired minors to leave the party, ultimately leading to the collision that killed their daughter. The Neldens also filed a separate lawsuit against the homeowners who hosted the party, accusing them of negligence in supervising the gathering and failing to prevent underage drinking. Both cases remain pending in Missouri state court as of November 2025. There's no undoing what happened here, but there is something to learn from it.
