Drop the weapon. Drop the weapon. >> These are the moments when cops weapons failed in the middle of a deadly situation. >> I got you. >> Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. >> Let's start with a case in which a cop found himself trapped in a room with an armed and dubbed criminal after his gun malfunctioned. [Music] On April 12th, 2021, Westerville police officers responded to a call about a suspicious person in a parking lot. They found a man sprawled on a picnic table visibly under the influence of drugs and took him to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Shortly after, Westerville detectives identified him as Miles Jackson, a suspect wanted for domestic violence and notified the Columbus police, who held an active warrant for his arrest. Their arrival evidently put Jackson on edge. >> You got anything in your pockets? Got something in there? >> All right. Well, it's all got to come out. Step on over there, buddy. need help. [Music] >> Don't worry about all that. They'll they'll get that. >> Climb out here. >> There you go. That's not coming with you. So, >> well, pants are coming down, bro. >> I'm going to grab all this stuff. Put it in this bag. Okay. >> No. Please, please, please, please smoke a cigarette. No, not right now. >> Asked to get up to have his pockets examined, Jackson was notably stalling, almost as if he had something to hide. It would soon become obvious why. >> You don't have nothing sharp in your pockets, do you? Hopefully, somebody would have caught that earlier. >> Uh-oh. Got a little bullet action. Don't see people carrying those around every day. [Music] Christine. Who's Christine? Oh my goodness. Got names on different names on every single card you have on you. >> Besides fighting bullets in other people's credit cards, which had already raised red flags, one of the officers made a chilling discovery that raised the stakes to a whole new level. >> Get his arm behind his back right now. Oh, stop. Stop. Stop. You grabbing my balls, sir. You get that arm. >> Yo, sir, you was grabbing my balls, man. >> Give me your arm now. >> Get out of there now. >> Man, you grabbing my balls, man. >> [ __ ] I'm giving it to you, man. >> Let go. >> You on my arms, man. Give me your hand now, >> man. You You're on my arms, man. >> You really is on my arms, man. >> Hit security, man. >> I'm going to comply, man. I'm going to comply, bro. This is Oh, [ __ ] man. >> Let's go. [Music] >> It's still in there, dude. It's still in there. [Music] >> How you do that, bro? Put the gun down, man. >> My [ __ ] guns. A [Music] >> put it down now. >> The officers failed to grab the suspect's gun and tasing him only made the situation worse, leading him to open fire. That critical moment, the officer's gun jammed and failed to return fire. And with the suspect still armed, he was now trapped in the hospital room. >> Put it down now. >> Ouch, man. Back. >> I'm getting up. >> Drop the gun now. >> No. Stay there. >> Drop your gun. >> I dropped it. >> No, you didn't. Put both hands up now. >> I dropped it. >> Put your hands up. >> My hand is >> Get your hands up. >> Get your hands up. >> My hand is up. >> Put your other hand up now. >> 911. >> I can't get up, sir. I can't get up. >> Get your other hand up. I don't care. >> Let go of it. let go of it. >> Jackson refused to comply with the police's commands despite being surrounded by several armed officers. After over 510 minutes of attempting to negotiate with him, the cops decided to take action. >> No. Put your hand on your head. >> Put your hand on your head. >> On your head slow. >> Uh, do you have a taser down? >> Yep. >> Light his ass up. >> Get your hand up now. >> Quit waiting to do it. I got you. >> Get your hand up. Go. >> I swear to God, dude. Taser. Taser. >> You good? >> Yeah, I'm good. >> Upon teasering him again, suspect opened fire once more, but this time he was met with a series of gunshots fired by multiple officers. [Music] >> Cover. Let me help him now. Hold on. Hold on. >> Okay, I'm staying back. >> Get back. Get back. Get back. >> The shootout proved fatal. The suspect, Miles Jackson, pronounced dead at the scene. His autopsy report showed positive results for and noral. The next case, an armed suspect escaped capture from police after a cop's gun jammed. >> Let me see your hands. Let me see your hands. On September 2nd, 2023, in the middle of a street in Chicago, Illinois, a man and a woman were caught up in a heated argument. The fight suddenly escalated when the woman pulled out and pointed a firearm at the man. Fortunately, patrolling officers happened to pass by just the right moment and caught her in the act. When they tried to intervene, they had no idea just how tense things were about to get. >> Come here. They're wearing all black. Come here. Hey, come here. Come here. Let me see your hand. Let me see your hand. >> As the cops approached her, she aimed the gun at one of them. The officers instantly opened fire and took cover, failed to hit the target. While they retreated to the car to call for backup, the woman slipped into an alleyway between two apartments. 101 91 99 shot fire9 fire at 484. Was anything shot back or no gun? At that time there was just another >> the same officer's gun had jammed and it took her almost a whole minute to clear it. This time they had completely lost track of their suspect and failed to locate her despite setting up a perimeter with the help of backup. >> Yeah, my gun exam. You didn't hit your back? >> Yeah, I did. I saw it once, but I don't know what. I'm glad nobody got hit. >> After questioning the man who was involved in the argument. They identified the suspect as 41-year-old Lynn Rosendez. She was found 2 days later and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault of a peace officer, and aggravated use of a weapon. Up next, a veteran cop refused to let a gun malfunction stop her from catching a dangerous criminal. >> Drop the weapon. Drop the weapon. >> In the early hours of July 14th, 2020 in East County, Michigan, a supermarket dispute went horribly wrong. Customers stabbed another customer in the neck multiple times after being confronted for not wearing a mask during the COVID pandemic. Responding officers reviewed CCTV footage and identified the attacker as 43-year-old Shawn Ruiz. About 30 minutes later, a 22-year veteran cop, Deputy Terresa Van Dorp, located his vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. What unfolded in next few seconds was nothing short of harrowing. Drop the weapon. Drop it. Drop the weapon. >> Drop it. Drop it. >> Drop it. >> Drop the weapon. >> Drop the weapon. Drop the weapon. down. >> Ruiz charged at Officer Vandor while slashing his weapons, forcing them to fire five rounds at him. Despite being struck, he continued lunging and made contact with her firearm, causing it to jam. The officer, however, expertly cleared it within a second and fired five more rounds, finally subduing him. EMS quickly transported him to the nearest hospital where he died during surgery. In the next case, two cops lives were in danger during an ambush attack because of a malfunctioning weapon. >> I got you. >> Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. On March 8th, 2024 in Hamilton, New Jersey, officers Derek Fabain, and Paul Pyramali responded to a call about a domestic dispute. The scene, he met a woman outside the residence who shared some concerning information. >> They had way too much drink and I don't really quite understand what he's upset about. Um, but it's a little bit out of control. Um, he does have a lot of guns in the basement. He's a hunter. Things like that. He's not me specifically, >> right? >> But I am not able to reach him and don't really understand what's happening. >> No, he's calling us all kinds of names, all very derogatory things like that. He's saying I'm going to kill you. I see nothing like that. >> Okay. >> No, but >> and what's his name? >> Vincent. >> Vincent. Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. After hearing the woman's statement, the officers prepared to engage with 44year-old Vincent Koreah, who was allegedly intoxicated and acting hostile, most likely expecting to deescalate the situation quickly. Little do they know, they were walking into a death trap. >> Oh, I'm good with Charlie. >> Where is he right now? >> He's uh probably in the basement. If you want, I can lead you through. It's not like a bad situation. >> I got you. >> Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. [Music] Korea who was wielding a loaded AR-15 rifle immediately opened fire upon the officer's entry. Several rounds struck officer Felbe fell on the floor and was in no position to confront the suspect. At the same time, officer Pyramali's gun jam, leaving both of them in a highly vulnerable position until he cleared the jam and returned fire, successfully neutralizing Korea. Officer Fabain sustained several serious gunshot wounds, but made a full recovery. The suspect, Vincent Korea, however, was pronounced dead at the scene. Up next is a case where officers unexpectedly came under fire and their guns failed to stop the murderous suspect. On July 3rd, 2024, just after around 9:00 p.m., patrolling LAPD officers initiated a traffic stop on a reckless driver they suspected was driving under the influence. >> Hey, this guy's not stopping. Keep an eye out. Make sure he's not >> You want to call it a reckless or do you uh if they take off? >> He's been swerving. >> There we go. PA real quick. Stop this. Stop this. Stop go. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. Officer needs help. Officer needs help. Get in the car. Get in the car. >> After stopping the car, the suspect opened fire on the police. as a result of which one officer sustained two headra wounds while both officers suffered several cuts and lacerations from shattered glass. Upon returning fire, the car sped off, leaving the cops in a moment of utter shock. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. Officer needs help. Officer needs help. Get the car. Get the car. >> What was that? You good? >> No. Just go. Go. Go. Hit us, dude. Hey. No. Go. Go. Go. Go. Dude, go. >> I don't know. >> Do you know where they went? >> No. >> Do you know where they went? No. Stop. >> The unprovoked attack understandably shook up the officers, causing them to have a delayed start in the following pursuit. Later investigation identified the suspect as Malcolm Darnell Gus Jr. arrested on July 12th, 2024 and charged with several felonious counts. Coming up next, a runaway motorcyclist was engulfed in flames after being struck by a cop's taser. >> On fire. >> On October 13th, 2024 in Little Rock, Arkansas, a state trooper attempted to pull over a black motorcycle with no visible license plate. However, unknown to the officers at the time, the driver, 38-year-old Christopher Gayler, had active arrest warrants and had no intention of stopping. >> Coming up on Highway 176. >> Coming out on 176. [Music] >> He's driving in the oncoming lane back on the eastbound side on Highway 176. Gayla drove at dangerous speeds of over 120 mph, ran multiple red lights, and drove into oncoming traffic to evade the police. >> Coming on to oncoming traffic right now. >> Copy. Northbound Camp. We're westbound coming up on Allen Street. >> Westbound on Allen for Allen and Chandler. We're taking Chandler Street right now. [Music] >> He's on foot. He crashed out. The nearly 5-minute chase finally ended when Gayler crashed his motorbike in a residential area. Tried to escape on foot, but that move would set everything ablaze. Get on the ground. I'll shoot. He's on fire. He's on fire. Get extinguisher. Extinguisher. He's [Music] on fire. Put your hands behind your back. >> I got him off. He's not on fire anymore. An officer deployed his taser on Galler to stop him from fleeing, but upon contact with the barbs, a fireball completely engulfed Gaylord. The fire was quickly put out using a fire extinguisher thanks to the officer's quick thinking. It was later discovered that Gayla had a gallon of gasoline in his backpack, which combusted after the initial electric shock. The suspect, Christopher Gaylor, is expected to recover and has been charged with felony fleeing, failure to register a vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and reckless driving. Next case, a holstered gun unexpectedly discharged inside a police station, risking the lives of multiple officers and a civilian. >> Who's the cop that body me? >> Oh, what the [ __ ] was that? >> What the [ __ ] was that? >> A firework. On July 24th, 2023, 22-year-old Zachary Barbosa walked into a Montville police station and made a beline for the drug dropbox from which he stole a bag of prescription drugs and then went into the bathroom. There he was confronted by an officer who witnessed the entire act and their exchange was nothing short of bizarre. >> Hang on. >> Nothing in there. >> No. No. We have an issue now. You have an issue now. >> You have any ID on you? >> No. I'm here to fill this out. >> I I just said he can search me. It's >> not going to change [ __ ] if you already took it. >> I I didn't leave. I think >> you already ingested something. >> But how do I know what was in that bag to begin with? >> Let's go look. >> How do I know what was in there to begin with? >> Because it's right. I don't have anything. It's in there. I just brought it to you. >> That doesn't mean you didn't ingest it. >> It's in the bagest. It's [ __ ] hydroxyazine and galapen. I [ __ ] am prescribed that. >> Barbosa openly admitted to stealing from the drug drop box hoping to obtain illicit drugs. >> Where where on this box does it say it, you know, free for taking. Take whatever you want. >> I don't see it saying don't take anything else either. >> Well, you don't walk into a police lobby. >> All right. Prescription in the bathroom. >> You're right. You're right. You're right. When I got arrested for this for what I'm here for, I had it was a drug charge. Okay. You know what happened that day? I told them all the drugs are in my car. Take them. They took them, arrested me, booked to me. I don't [ __ ] lie to police about [ __ ] >> Dude, you're not going to walk into a police department lobby, steal drugs out of a box, and walk out. >> That's not why I came here. I came here for that. >> It's not happening. >> [ __ ] it up, bro. Get the >> When the cops tried to arrest him, Barbosa resisted, leading multiple officers to step in and restrain him. As the suspect continued making a scene, something wildly unexpected happened. >> Let's go. >> Yo, wait, wait, wait, wait. Who's the cop that body slam me? >> Yo, what the [ __ ] was that? >> What the [ __ ] was that? >> A firework. I got my gun. >> Oh, wow. >> Shut the [ __ ] up. >> Bro, now a gun goes off here. Oh, this court case going to be easy. >> As an officer lifted Barbosa's legs, his holstered gun spontaneously discharged with the bullet hitting the floor and ricocheted. Luckily, despite the crowd, though, he was hurt.
