So, uh, whose moose is it? >> Uh, I shot it. >> You got it. Okay. >> All right. And I do want to say, >> how do you shut this up? The lights on. >> I do want to say, sir. >> Yeah. >> Um, >> I don't have cell service right now, but this moose is not big enough. >> So, we're we were bringing it in until we could get cell service to be able to call so that we can um turn it in. >> Okay. Do you got your cell phone with you? I do have my cell phone. >> All right. Do you mind if I take a look at it real quick? >> It might already be on the cab here in the truck. >> I I have my in reach on me. >> Okay. >> But you're you So you've already made a trip out today. >> Yes. We've been we've been going all day trying to get out of here. >> So we just been back and forth all day. So you you didn't take any time to call and report it? >> No, cuz I don't have service between here and all the way back. >> There's service here. >> There's service here. >> Yeah. >> When I pulled into the lot, I had zero service. It was SOS. >> No, this should be service. Can we Can we take a look at your phone real quick? >> Yeah. Can I walk up to my truck? >> Yeah. Hey, uh, right. Will you uh we're going to go I'm going to go with him up to the truck and check his cell phone real quick. Okay. >> I got to get my hand. >> It's a It's a small moose here. >> Yeah. >> Oh, hey, the uh cookies top notch. >> We measured it was an inch shy. >> Okay. So, here's the thing, man. Yeah. >> If you if you shoot a short moose, >> Yeah. >> you got to report it right away. I mean, right away. >> Yes. We understand. We We were a mile back that we had to hike all the way in. >> Yeah. >> To go get that moose. >> But you're you're go making multiple trips back and forth into places that have cell phone coverage. >> And you have an inreach. >> I do have an inreach. >> So, were you able to text anybody and let them know that you got a you had a problem? Cuz that's the way everybody else does. >> Okay. Well, I I texted my wife and just told her that that we were going to be a while and that I was just going to call 50 again when I was when I was within service. Yeah. Hey, trooper. We're going to go. His his phone's up here. I'll just follow him to the to the thing. How uh it works. >> Oh, >> yeah. >> What's up? We're driving the keys 47. You got the phone with you or what? >> Where's your phone? >> No, it should be up here. >> You got to get the keys to the truck. >> You got your phone up. >> Okay. >> Mine. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. See if they make calls to or from or texted. >> Yes, I do. I have LTE right here, but it was SOS when I pulled it. Can I can I see your luggage? When did you get this moose? >> Uh, yesterday. >> Okay. All right. I see you're nervous. >> I see. Okay. So, let's let's stop right here quick. >> Yes. >> Let's Let's unwind this a little bit. I I'll just I'll start with I'm a sergeant with the troopers. I've been doing this for a very long time, like over 15 years, and I've seen everything. So, we we'll have to rewind this back a little bit. >> First of all, relax. >> Okay. >> Mistakes were made. >> Yes, they were. >> You can control how it goes, how where we go from here. >> Yes. >> And what we're going to need is honesty. >> Okay. So there is there is incentive to to come clean and tell the truth because I will tell you the truth. >> Okay. >> So go ahead and let me know what's going on. >> Okay. Yesterday we went out there um we spotted a moose about 2 miles out. We walked in um for some extremely rough terrain. Watch the loose flowers. We um it took us about an hour to get up to where it was. Um we walked back there and we watched this for about 30 minutes to an hour. We took several photos. uh measured over and over and over again determined that it was probably about 52. How did you determine that? >> Um by using the distance between the eyes. >> Okay. And then using a small strip of paper that I folded um and measuring basically in place by the width of the um so over and over and over again we measured we took multiple photos. Um so I shot after we determined that it was going to be big enough. We got over to it. It was not. And then I called my wife and she said, "That's a bummer." I said, "I'm going to have to report it." And then just having a really difficult time like yelled and I'm going to have to turn it in and had a really difficult time. And just like the back and forth of it, I called another friend. He's like, "Man, I regret being honest because when I went and turned my stuff in, I got the third degree, everything else." He's like, "Just drive home." And I said, "I understand." I was like, "I do know that." So, I it was just like an angel and a devil on both shoulders. Like, like me tell my wife, she's she was disappointed. Uh, but ultimately, yeah, it was it was my decision. I was planning on going home and then deciding what to do from there. Okay. I commend you for saying that because the the route that we were going was not going to be good with, you know, there's going to be search warrants, going to be things like that. And you I can tell that you're that you're not a bad person that you made but you made a mistake and you and you gave into the weak side of it. >> Yeah. Now I'll tell you this your buddy is I don't know what his deal is but the people >> the other wheeler that's not us. >> Well the the guy that you spoke to >> he when we have self turnins we handle those. We we've handled how many like three four already >> something like that. >> Yeah. and they they come in and then we give them a court date, they lose their moose, and then we move on. >> Yeah. He just had a really bad experience with the self turnin and um he basically said that he had the third degree in every sense of the way. Um and just uh I guess he was verbally abused and everything in that situation. He was like, you know, he goes, "I regret it 100% and whichever." And um I think I let that get like the better side of me. Um just hearing him cuz he's somebody that I I do have a lot of trust in you know like I I've known him for years and he's been a hunting buddy for years and everything else but it was it was the wrong choice. It was >> What do you do for a living? >> I'm military. >> Military. Okay. And I can tell there there is a at least a sense of the right thing in in you to do that because we do talk to what I call poachers and they're they're absolutely uh they cheat. They they do they are out here to cheat. >> And what I think the situation that you're telling me the way I'm seeing it is a mistake was made. You meant to shoot a legal animal. >> Yes. you had an oh [ __ ] moment and then you're you're just trying to roll the dice to get it home. Um here's what should have happened cuz mistakes are being made out here. I mean we've had we've had troopers shoot small moves accidentally and what what you do is you call and you say, "Hey, I I shot a small one. I or we have guys sometimes say it might be legal, it may not be. Can you come take a look?" >> And then we'll we'll say, "Yeah." And then with those guys, we'll say, "Hey, at your convenience, bring it out, meet us, and we work around. We don't put a lot of resources in because we know that that guy's working with us." And then we'll have somebody meet or we'll meet in a neutral place. >> And then we'll measure it to make sure that it's it isn't legal. And then if that's the case, then the guy loses the moose. >> And then you get a court date. And it's a it's a fine. And it's we it's like a like if you didn't use your turn signal or stop at a stop sign. That's what that is. Now, I don't know what happened to your buddy. There might have been some extracurricular stuff going on with that, but >> that's not that's not typical. But, um, so, but where we're at here with it it coming out and and you're not disclosing it right away. And believe me, when um, I could tell something was wrong almost immediately. >> Yeah. >> And um, and then and I could tell the because I was I was terrified cuz I already knew the situation. I already know what I should have done >> and I could tell you're a good person because the way you're shaking >> and stuff cuz you're not used to doing the wrong thing. You're not used to it. It's completely conflicting with your body. >> And now that you've told me about it, you're at ease. >> You feel good because that's the way you normally live your life. >> I was sick in my stomach all night last night. >> Yeah. >> I think I slept like 2 hours. So, let me just tell you right now you there's there's going to be some and I understand you have to do there. >> I'll tell you there is going to be some hell to pay a little bit here because we cannot have moose getting snuck out of here. >> Yes. >> Um but you're not it's not it's not the first time it's ever happened. We have a procedure for this and it, you know, when when you're working with us and you're telling us what happened just like you did, that's that kind of mitigates it a little bit. >> I just listen to the wrong person. I do. >> Do you have your hunt do you have your hunting license with you? Have your driver's license? >> I do. >> You did validate it. Okay. >> And then what what time did you shoot it yesterday? >> Uh, it would have been One or two and in that area I did not have cell service. >> Where what was the area that you shot it at? It was off of we saw a sign that said outer loop and about 5 miles up the trail from there. >> So the outer loop. So before you get to four corners up here, >> the second outer loop. >> So is it so it pass four corners >> I believe. So like >> you'll see there's a sign shows on in reach it it calls it like uh Crooked Creek Trail. >> Okay. Yeah, that's that makes sense. Outer leaf crooked creek trail. And we were staying um in that area and there was lakes um wherever we were. It was on the far side of the mountain. Okay. >> Um All right. So, let's So, let me recap that. How you So, you you go out, you glass, you um glassing from our camp. Okay. And then and did you see the moose from your camp or something? Okay. >> And all right. And how long did you wash it for? >> Uh 30 minutes to an hour. >> What were you using to glass with scope? >> I was within I want to say 50 to 75 yards. Um I was using my binoculars. What's the range >> on my binoculars? >> Yeah. I mean, what how far out were you watching? >> Oh, um within 100 yards majority of the time cuz we were we were following it. >> Okay. and uh we took a few photos, took some videos and just had really it was an amazing experience up until I shot it. >> Okay. >> And well, up until I found out how big it really was after I shot it. >> Okay. So, what uh type of uh firearm did you use to shoot the moose? >> 270. Okay. See, how many shots were on the miss? >> Uh, two. >> Two shots. >> Mhm. >> Where were they? >> Uh, upper upper shoulder area. Um, and those were the only shots that I could like I shot at it three times. The third shot was I believe a miss. um just cuz it started moving forward and yeah um but it really only took another like step and it it went down. >> Okay. >> So it was pretty quick. Okay. So two shots shoulder. Um and then did you were you able to salvage all the meat? >> Yes. >> Where is the meat >> in the back of the truck >> right now? >> Yes. So, did you get um ribs, a neck? >> Yes. >> Okay. All right. Let me see if I can get us a We're going to have to seize the meat and we got to get it somebody. Yes. >> Tonight, I understand. >> All right. Uh this this is how this is going to play out on this. >> Um we got to get this meat to a charity. Okay. >> We're going to cease the antlers and then the the gun is coming with us. Yes, I yours. You can lose your side by side. I'm going to let you keep it right now. Thank you. >> But it it we may end up getting it later. I'm going to make sure that we're um treating it the same as everybody else that we're that's similar. But here's the thing. It it can't the juice can't be worth the squeeze. And so what you're you're going to be charged with is uh two misdemeanor crimes. And that doesn't mean it's going to end that way, but it's definitely starting that way. Um and it is going to be um take moose close season, which there's not a season that is for that size here, and then unlawful possession and transport. And that's how you you lose stuff. Um the uh >> yeah, so I >> I appreciate like like I said like I just appreciate >> your demeanor and everything right now cuz it's very helpful. >> Well, I'm kind of gauging off of you. Uh cuz I I believe me my I I'm prepared for battle and I have done this many many times and I actually I was a major crimes investigator where I did homicides and everything like that. So I I I actually like the fight the the digging, you know what I mean? I I and and and but that when you when you when you step up like I I could tell when I saw you shaking that I knew that it this is not normal for you. And yeah, so yeah, it's going to suck. It is going to suck. And if I thought that you were an absolute jerk, the the sideby side's coming with us. >> But what I'm going to do is I'm going to document it. I'm going to document the serial number and I'm gonna let you go home with it. But it it is susceptible to being lost. So you can't it. So I I'll get back with you on that way if we're going to go that route. And we might. But you cannot you cannot sell it. You cannot get rid of it or hide it because what'll happen is we're going to we would charge a felony. It's called tampering with physical evidence. And it turns something that's a misdemeanor into a felony. lose guns, lose jobs. >> Not good. >> Um, >> yeah, the side by side is in my wife's name, so she really would not be happy. It >> it wouldn't be, but the thing is possession and transport is >> it was Yeah, it's it is what it is. Uh, I mean, we sometimes we seize airplanes and those are, you know, 150 200,000 sometimes. So, I'll I'll let you know. I I am kind of gauging off you and I the the way that you're everything that's going in your favor right now with the way you're working with us, the way you came clean, and I'm going to reflect that in my investigation report. Thank you. All right. Okay. Can I get you to come over here in front of the headlights so I can explain this? All right. Um, make sure these all these are carbon copies here. Okay. >> So, um what this is is this is take moose close season. Uh did take moose close seasons with did unlawfully and with negligence. Um harvest a moose with less than 50 in antlers, less than four briiness and not a spike fork. Uh seize items, moose meat, antlers, 270 rifle. Um, and that's your serves as your receipt as well for the items taken. >> A court date is going to be Glenn Allen Court, October 8th at 13:30. >> Okay. >> Got it. I mean, that is that's >> have to be there. >> Be there or it's a warrant. >> Um, if you have any issues with the date, court date, they could probably postpone you. You have to work with a court. >> Is there a phone number that I can call on? >> Yeah, just look at uh it's not on the document. >> They just Google Glenn Allen Court and they >> Yeah. Is it uh officer right just as they was calling one >> was that they were doing teleconference. >> Yeah. But yeah, just call call the court and set that up. But you're right. Yeah, that's a good point to point that out. >> I don't even think they're having in person yet. Okay. So, but it's >> call them call them this week. >> Yeah, I I've got to have time to file the charges. They won't know until I get >> I will be in Ohio this week. >> Okay. Um, >> it's not until October, but I I'll call him as soon as I made it. >> All right. So, the second count is going to be unlawful possession and transport. Um, basically, you can't transport something illegally. We That's Yeah, >> I understand that. >> Um, all right. Um, same court date and everything like that. Both of these are class A misdemeanors. Uh, this is going to go to the DA. We'll write a report. We'll make recommendations. I I'm they they may offer a plea deal. They typically do. Uh or we can they also uh can set up a trial date. But what you'll see at the court date on October 8th is what it is is it's a court saying, "Would you like to plead not guilty?" If you plead not guilty, we'll set a trial date. If you plead no contest or guilty, uh the the DA may have a plea deal for you to consider for just to finish the case and make it a beneficial >> wrap it up. >> It wraps it up. It saves the court time. And typically in order to do that they instead of going for the typical usual penalties they will um they will give some kind of offer that is less than what would be the full penalties and I can't say what those are >> um but they also listen to our sentencing recommendations and based on everything I will make a set of sentencing recommendations and I'm going to give you my cell phone like I don't give this out to everybody, but this is such a big deal in your life. I get it. Uh, and I I if you have questions, please feel free to contact me. Um, and the DA's office is going to be the through the Palmer DA. They handle the Glenn Allen courts. >> Okay. >> Um, all right. That is my cell phone. So, thank you. >> All right. Thanks for being honest. And uh it's going to suck. >> It's it's going to suck. Okay. Here's your papers. Thank you. >> All right, sir.
