On June 3rd, 2024 in Steuart, Florida, officers respond to their own county jail as someone is actively attacking the building and ramming it with their vehicle. What they don't know is the suspect is trying to bring the entire building down. Hey, turn around. Be naked. Hey, don't get away from the car. Come here. Step away. Step away from the car. The suspect is currently holding motor oil and a lighter. He's already poured motor oil all over the jail lobby floor and on the vehicle. At any moment, he could set everything, including the building on fire. Step away from the car. Come here. Come here now. Get on the ground. Get on the ground. Do it now. Get on the ground force. [Music] Turn around. Going forward. The devil made me do it. The devil made me do it. The devil made you do it. Yep. Okay. Put your hands behind your back. I can't do it. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Do it now. Stop moving. Let me see your other hand. Put me out with you. Charlie and Fox. Can I get your car? Can I kill you? Get the car. Let me get it. Reports indicate that after the suspect rammed his vehicle into the building, he threw rubber snakes on the jail lobby floor while expressing his desire to quote, "Kill everyone." While we have more info about this incident and the suspect's backstory that we'll reveal later, his strange behavior only gets crazier from here. Holy, I'm going to go get the car real quick. You want to go back the other side? Yeah. Okay. Let's see. All right. Ready? One. God. Ready? Oh, this is good. This is nice. Should I sleep like this forever? Oh, wow. Wow. This suspect was identified as Joseph Ley, a 40-year-old homeless man. After crashing through the doors of the jail lobby, he got out of the vehicle and was completely nude except for a woman's blouse. Although he did cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to the building, he was not able to breach the steel doors. And fortunately, no one was standing in the lobby at the time of the crash. In response to the incident, the Martin County Sheriff's Office plans to install concrete ballards in front of the jail to prevent similar occurrences in the future. After Ley was restrained and given multiple doses of ketamine to sedate him, he was taken to a nearby hospital and was still uncooperative with personnel. Due to his resistance to ketamine, authorities suspect Lei was under the influence of a controlled substance. He was medically cleared at the hospital and then taken back to the same jail he attacked. He was charged with four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, criminal mischief of over $1,000, and resisting without violence. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Now, this is something that I don't think I've ever seen. A suspect who's mentally disturbed and for some unknown reason, he crashed into the lobby of the jail. This is definitely different. And what followed was a tense, unpredictable encounter. Because by the way, this man was acting, he definitely needed to be mentally evaluated. Now, these officers were quick to arrive, but they had no clue what type of person they will be confronting because he had motor oil and a lighter, which he already poured pretty much all over the immediate area. So, this could have turned into a catastrophe quick. And these officers are doing their best to deescalate. But when you're dealing with a mentally ill person, it's not a quick fix because they could be hearing voices which can set them off at any minute. The officers did take their chance and tase the suspect. And I do agree because they had to act before the suspect used that lighter. And the suspect did say that the devil made him do it. And in his mind, that may be very real. And I've dealt with countless people suffering from mental illness. And that's why it's important for officers not to become jaded when dealing with these people cuz it can happen. In the end, the suspect was taken into custody before he could start a fire that could have caused more destruction. This wasn't just a strange call. It was a reminder of how quickly desperation can turn into disaster. Be safe. Thanks for watching.
