Ambulance emergency. What town or suburb? Uh some tell me exactly what's happened. Uh well this morning uh I'm at mom's and we had a a bad argument. Um we're up half the night arguing and uh yeah things got bad and she's chasing me around the house and life. And uh how old is she? I think she's once. Is she breathing? No. Okay. What was your name? What's your name? On the 28th of July 2022, emergency services were called to a home in Tumbyambi on the New South Wales Central Coast. The caller was 59year-old David Andrew Map. Inside the home, officers located the body of 82-year-old Colleen Wilson, MAP's elderly mother, lying in a pool of blood and partially covered by a blanket. She had been dead for several hours. In the recorded trip call, M admitted to having a big argument with his mother, stating that things got pretty bad and she had fallen down. He told the operator he had attempted CPR, but received no response. Just hours after the murder, Map was caught on CCTV entering a pawn shop in nearby Long Jetty. There, he sold a 55-in Highense TV and a whippers snipper he had taken from his mother's home. The store clerk took his ID and paperwork before handing over four $50 notes. Map used the $200 to purchase heroin, later found used in a syringe inside the console of his mother's car. Police bodywn footage captured the moments after officers arrived at the scene. Map is seen speaking with the officers attempting to explain what had happened. Just letting you know that I'm recording this conversation. Your actions do you understand that? Okay. I'm Cable Simpson from Wong Police. All right. Continue. What were you saying? Chase the house with a knife. Just before you say anything, I just got to let you know that you don't have to say or do anything if you do not want to. Okay. I'm going to record what you say or do. And this recording can use be used in court. Do you understand that? Do you understand that? Yes. Okay. Now, keep going. Um the thing this went on after she's asked me to go out and get the prop and I came in, she had it back to me there speaking to the floor and she come at me again with the knife. Where's the knife now? Don't touch. Where's the knife now? Just stay just stand up against there. Is it in this one? Second draw. Yeah. Further on. These are pretty tight. They're tight. Yeah. obviously they're tight. Is that Is that the knife there? The first one there. We can readjust your cups in a minute. So, David, I'm just going to readjust. just readjust his cuffs. Yeah. So, back back to the knife. She was chasing with a knife. What happened then? Uh, she went outside to ask me to bring the pot plant in because she quite often organizes plants and stuff and we were arguing certain things and uh they came in and she had her back to the table. do it. Sweeping the floorboards. Yep. She had it back to her. Yep. And she came at me again with the knife. [Music] I protected myself. You protected yourself? She wouldn't stop. Just while you're telling this story, you can take your mask down cuz I can't really hear you. Sorry. So, continue. Um, she said, "I don't want you here anymore." And things got bad. And she just kept trying to plunge and lunge at me with the knife. Yep. What time of day was this, David? It was this morning. This morning? Okay. What hand was she holding the knife in? I don't even know if she's left or right hand. Sorry. Okay. So, what happened then when she tried to climb down? I stood there for a minute. Blood sort of How did she get blood on her head, David? I guess when I threw the the plan, I guess she hit her head on the way down the table. Just understand. Did you say you threw the pot plan at her head? Sorry. Sorry, I just didn't get that last bit. Did you just say you threw the pot plant at her head? He had it back to me and she turned around with the knife and had the knife in one hand and the broom in the other. She went to turn around and put the broom there and trying to stab me. I protected myself. Okay. So, she's tried to stab you. And how did you try to protect yourself? Oh, God. I didn't uh throw it at her. I basic she had it back to me. Sweeping the floor. I could see she put that she put that she was going to pick the knife up and she pass partially and uh yeah I just lunged at her with the plant. You lunged at her with the plant. not l just in the midst of trying to protect myself. I just I didn't know how hard I was trying. I was in the midst of arguing with mom and yep, I saw the knife. Um, and I just before she could turn around and pick the knife back up off the table, um, I I guess there's no other word but to um, I guess throw it at her, I guess. And where did you hit your mom when you threw it at her? in the back back the head in the back of the head. She was facing towards the rooms. Your mom said things got bad. Does she normally chase you around the house with a knife? Yes. The court later heard that the pot plant weighed approximately 15 kg and it struck Miss Wilson in the head, causing a 40 mm laceration and fatal bleeding on the brain. She also sustained a fractured collarbone during the fall. The New South Wales Supreme Court heard that Map had a long-standing drug addiction and was staying with his mother at the time due to having contracted CO 19. In the weeks leading up to the murder, Map had stolen her TV on a previous occasion, forcing her to go into a pawn shop and buy it back. She had refused to involve police. During sentencing, Justice Ian Harrison described how Matt killed his mother in a moment when his frustration could no longer be controlled. He noted that the pair had argued frequently, but this time the confrontation turned deadly. In October 2023, a jury found Matt guilty of murder. On sentencing day, Miss Wilson's sister, Janice Fowler, gave a victim impact statement describing the years of harassment, begging, pleading, promises, and lies that Colleen had endured from her son. David Andrew Map was sentenced to a maximum of 21 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole in July 2037 after serving a non-parole period of 15 years.
