on the 29th of May 2017 a 40-year-old suspect Ricky Madison fired shots towards officers after a lengthy Chase through the loia valley in southern Queensland Madison during the shooting fatally wounded senior Constable Brett Fort 41 years old during this tragic event Brett Fort was in the darling Downs District tactical crime Squad and was responding to the call fully aware of the potential danger of a fire as written in the inquest surrounding the events of the shootings Brett Andrew Ford was a devoted husband and father leaving three children behind Ricky Charles Madison was investigated before the events on the 29th of May he had a prior criminal history which included charges of assault occasioning bodily harm willful damage and other minor property offenses at the time of the shooting Madison was living off- Grid in a shed on wallers Road in Ringwood Queensland on the 22nd of May 2017 reports of automatic gunfire were made by worried locals in the Ringwood area Madison was also wanted for alleged domestic violence offenses it was made aware on police Intel that Madison could have a firearm and was possibly hiding in a cave on the property of the alleged dvo victim Madison was not located at any of the residences during a search on the 27th of May 2017 Madison was spotted at the Wallace Road address and seemed to have found the cameras installed by tactical crime Squad officers or TCS at the start of the road the camera was removed including the SD card the camera was plac there as part of the tcs's investigation into the reports of automatic gunfire in the area the SD card had images of Madison with a ks-30 auto rifle and an skk rifle slung over his shoulder similar to this the camera on the 29th of May 2017 Madison is seen paying for fuel at a petrol station for the niss Nara owned by his brother that he was borrowing at the time Madison contacted the police via a pay phone that was 800 M away from the police station he spoke with for over the phone and was audibly agitated stating that he wanted to speak to the senior officer Madison was transferred to a sergeant Madison refused to surrender to officers after being asked to come to the police station and hand himself in well I think it's yours Ricky you know if you're not game enough to take responsibility for your own [Applause] actions I've had a look at all of the
