On the 16th of January 2023, a drunk and unlicensed driver caused a devastating multi-vehicle crash on Barasa Valley Way in Sandy Creek, South Australia. Brenton James Howeth, aged 61, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Hilux ute three times over the legal limit when witnesses saw him swerving all over the road. In the minutes before impact, one witness recalled seeing the Hilux come around a bend sideways, sliding into the dirt before fishtailing back onto the road directly into oncoming traffic. Moments later, Howitt's vehicle collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz, which was then struck from behind by a motorcycle. The motorcyclist's foot was left hanging after it became wedged between the two vehicles, causing a severe 90° ankle fracture. The driver of the Mercedes, a 53-year-old woman, said she remembered the scene clear as day and could not erase the vision from her mind. In the chaotic aftermath, Howard fled the crash site on foot. Witnesses later spotted him attempting to climb over a barbed wire fence, only to become caught by his shirt and left hanging until restrained by bystanders. When the police arrived, bodywn camera footage captured him insisting he had simply been walking home and claiming, "I've done nothing wrong my whole life." >> And I've just >> happened before. >> I've just been walking home and these men jump me and knock my teeth out on a brick. >> Right. >> Right. And these dogs over here are mine. If you can, that' be good. >> That way. >> Yeah. Thank you. >> All right. That made a hand. Yeah, >> that made heat. Ah, >> actually that made >> All right. >> Just remember that. Do >> you want us to help you out? >> Yeah. >> How old are you, >> my friend? >> 12. How old are you? >> 12. >> Just remember this mother career. >> No, he's a good one. You like him? >> Oh, you're great. Yeah, you're great. I'll see you later, mate. >> And buddy, he barreled over and then he was tearing his shirt off as he was running and I just said, "Get I'm [ __ ] out of here. I'm going to go." And then he's I'm still on the phone. Bad. Hang on, hang on, hang on. And he barreled in and we had to come down under gates. And by that time, he's across here. And we got him right there. >> Oh god. >> Well, I'm doing analysis. Thank you. [Music] >> Was I driving when you found me? >> Was I driving when you corrected me? >> Was I driving? Was I driving when you found >> driving when you had the accident? Yes. >> Accident? Stitch me up. >> I've done nothing wrong my whole life. >> All right. >> And your police officers are pretty questionable. >> Anyway, let's go on with it. >> Your officers should be answering a lot of questions. >> Are you going to answer any more questions then? >> You were driving your vehicle. >> All right. >> I was which was involved in a motor vehicle accident. black Mercedes vehicle and a motorbike involved in the accident with you. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Another person, a witness >> has come up to your car to see if you're okay. >> It's not like basically said that you tried to grab the keys and start the car and drop off. The witness has rang the police. You've exited that driver's side of that vehicle and run out into the paddics. >> And that's you. >> These are the allegations, mate. >> Oh, they're the allegations. Howeth pleaded guilty in the district court to two counts of aggravated cause serious harm by dangerous driving, one count of leaving the scene of an accident, and one count of driving without a license. The prosecution sought to have his bail revoked immediately, but Judge Jane Shammer adjourned sentencing submissions to September. Thanks for watching.
