On September 26th, 2024 in Dana Beach, Florida, deputies were dispatched to an IHOP after a worker reported that a woman, later identified as Catherine Shaughnessy, had allegedly refused to pay for her food and walked out of the establishment. When deputies arrived on scene, the IHOP worker directed them to the suspect's location. Headed that way, huh? Ran out on her tab. She's headed that way. blocking a red red uh red shirt all carrying a brief bag. All right, I see her. Okay, buzz. I'm going be with the subject at South Federal Highway and Southwest Third Street. Ma'am, stop. Stop. What's going on? Nothing. So, why is everyone saying that you walked out on your tab at IHOP? Uh, because I didn't have money to pay for it. So, you got food? I thought there was money on the car. So, why'd you leave? Because I got scared of the cops. So, you decided to leave without paying, which is a crime, instead of just staying there and figuring something out. I didn't know I was I could figure something out. I didn't know. Well, the establishment could figure something out. Well, I don't know. I I I was trying to talk to him about it, but he wasn't talking to me. He was waiting for us to come. Yes. So, we could figure it out. But you just left without paying. I don't know. I got scared. I that that's not an excuse. That's not an excuse at all. I'm sorry. I'm homeless. I've already been involved in issues with Do you have your ID on you? No, I don't have ID. I have They stole my ID, my phone, everything. The only thing I have is my hospital. Okay. Do you want to stay with me for a second while he go on? What's your date of birth? 12:21. And you say you're homeless? Yes. I just got here a little bit after. I I got I'm homeless. I'm disabled. Um, somebody stole all my IDs, my food. Honey, what happened at IHOP just now? No, that's what I I'm getting to that. Um, I didn't have anything uh except these prepaid cards that somebody gave me. They told me there was money on them. So, I went into So, I went into IHOP. I ate and I paid I tried to pay and there was no money on on either of the cards that I had. You got to make sure you have the money before you go and I didn't know there was there was no money left on there because they somebody giving you prepaid cards is not enough to say, "Okay, I know I have the money to to get dinner." That's not how that works. If if some person gives me prepaid cards, I'm not 100% that person is telling me the truth about money being on those cards. Unless it's my mom or somebody I trust, obviously. So, you were unsure and you still took Yeah, he did. You were unsure and you still want to go get services. You got to be careful with that. Do you remember what your bill was? Uh like 27 $28. So you ate pretty good for IHOP. You could have gotten something cheaper as well. Uh not only that, you walked away. That's not how that works. Well, I got scared when he was talking about the cops. So when they said that we were coming, that's even worse. He didn't say you were coming. He was talking to me about the cops. That's even worse. I didn't know because he brought up the Britney. I was trying to explain explain to you if the police is brought up, you don't leave. That's not how that works because now you're fleeing. Well, I if anybody ever brings up the cops while you're not I wouldn't even say technically committing a crime, but can't pay for your pay for services. You don't just Well, I've been involved with domestic violence with somebody who was pretending to be a neighbor police officer. So, I He didn't tell me he was on the phone with the police. He was talking to me about the police. Yeah. Ain't no pretend police showing up. Just give him a second. Let him talk to the guys and see what they're talking about. See if we can hear. Okay. Okay. You got a lot of stuff in that suitcase. I have blankets, papers. Um like uh facial pads, uh toothbrush. Do you have a phone number? So honest question. What do you guys want to do? Cuz she's homeless. She clearly doesn't have money or anything. I I got to ask you guys what you guys want to do. Um I mean it's like she's so the other people that work here, they allow her to do that. I'm going to have to pay $30 out of my pocket. My boss now. You know what I'm saying? I get you. So she's going to continue to do it. Take her to jail, man. Press charge or whatever. So who who gave her an order and everything? Yeah, I gave her an order. I met her order. Okay, I got you. Yeah. I didn't know she was homeless, but uh other people I called somebody else. They said she got it before. And how much food did she get? It was $30. All right. Uh give me a second. I'll be right back. Uh do you have your ID on you? May I come here? [Music] So, what he's going to do is what he's going to do is he's going to go ahead and impound all that paperwork cuz the jail is not going to let you take all that paperwork with you. Is there anything specific that you want to take with you? Because I am going to take it though. Yeah, I need I need um Am I going to be able to keep what I have in there? Everything is going Everything is going to get impounded. So, whenever you get out, you just take pick it up station. Pick it up at what station? Uh so, right here at Daniel Beach 803. She she could write it down the address. And if not if it's not here, obviously you pick it up in Boulevard. But either way, go. everything that we all of your belongings, he's going to go ahead and impound it. And once you get out, you can be you can be able to come just pick it up. Okay. I'll write the address down here on the sheet of paper. Now, if there's something specific in here that you want to take with you right now, I can take it out for you. Is that is that is there something specific you need to take with you right now? Uh, am I going to be able to keep it with me in the jail? No. No. It goes into your property. I'm going to put all this inside of your inside of your book bag your suitcase and we'll put it for safekeeping. Are you going to take anything out of my suitcase? He didn't hear anything. He just said he's going to unlock it. Put everything inside of the suitcase and put it in safe keep. You're going to keep the key. There's nothing coming out of your suitcase. When you get out, you have the key. You come get your suitcase. You can unlock it and get all your stuff back. All right. Come here for a second. Grab the blanket. Make sure nothing falls out of here real quick. So, what we're going to do is open it up and put everything inside. We tried our best to close it. Yeah, we tried our best to lose it. Might have to like push on the top of That's not I got it. Catherine Shaughnessy was charged with defraud inkeeper under $300.
