No. >> All right. >> This is too much. I want to know that my boyfriend's okay. >> A shooting has just taken place, and when officers arrive, the person responsible is believed to be standing right there at the scene. It appears to be an open and shut case, but before long, questions begin to emerge that change everything. >> What led up to you shooting him today? >> I just got so frustrated and aggravated and just keeping on and on and on. >> Despite her confession to the shooting, the story is only just beginning. As investigators dig deeper and the victim finally shares his side, an unbelievable twist comes to light that turns the entire case on its head. >> God damn it. Why did you you shoot me, god damn it? Why did you shoot me? >> It all begins in rural Clarksville, Kentucky on July 9th, 2022, when dispatchers receive a deeply unsettling 911 call. >> I need an ambulance. Please hurry up. I GOT SHOT WOUNDS. >> Who has been shot? >> Jerry Stinnett. >> Okay, where is he now? >> Kathy Cann Stinnett. >> I need >> Kathy Cann. >> Okay, where are they now? >> Right here. We're all here. >> Okay, was it an accident or intentional? >> It was just an accident. >> Okay, is that a house or a trailer? Hello? >> The caller abruptly hangs up, but the dispatcher knows something is very wrong. Sensing the urgency, officers are immediately dispatched to the scene, and when they arrive, it becomes clear that the situation is far worse than they initially thought. But they don't know yet that the reality will even be more twisted and surprising than they could ever imagine. >> Who shot him? >> Uh female girlfriend, domestic. He's laying there. >> All right. You can you can you confirm that? Where's where's she at? >> She's back there. >> Where y'all at? >> Right here. What's wrong? >> Where's he shot at? >> Shot in the hip, right here. Probably internal. >> All right. >> You got to straight to hunt. >> Are there any other guns? >> No, I don't know. >> Yeah. Yeah, come on, man. We [snorts] do. We're going to check out and see what's going on first. What's going on? Could you do me a favor? Would you hang out with her? I'm going to take her to my car. >> I saw him at my house in there condition. >> The victim is identified as Jeremy Stinnett and is found with a gunshot wound to his hip, which could prove fatal at any moment. Paramedics work desperately to save him and as the next step, they try to make sense of the scene. Officers begin scouring the area to uncover how the incident unfolded and led to this brutal act. >> Ma'am, we're just trying to keep everyone separated. Hey, what's your name? Won't you come over here? Sit You want to sit on the lawn mower? Sit right here? >> No, I'm fine right here. I'm fine. >> Patricia, what's your last name? >> He's good. HE'S GOOD. PLEASE STOP. >> IS HE STILL RIDING IT? >> NO, it's off. >> Please tell me somebody's taking care of Jeremy better than this dog. >> Ma'am, that dog came at me. I have to protect myself, okay? Just chill out, Blake. We Since you're a law enforcement officer, will you hang out with her? I think she's a shooter. Ma'am, he'll be okay. >> The sudden and completely unexpected turn changes everything, placing officers just moments away from a potentially fatal injury. Thankfully, no one is injured, and the dog is safely out of harm's way, but slowly and surely, the situation continues to unravel. Officers identify the lady as Jeremy's girlfriend, Patricia Hook, and just when it seems like things are getting back on track, another unexpected turn emerges. >> Come on now, okay? All right, you okay? All right. >> This is too much. I want to know that my boyfriend's okay. >> Hang out with her. I need my notebook. I left it on my desk in the office. Goodnight. You want to take the elderly lady in for questioning at the order? Or do you want to do it here? She said they've been fighting two or three days. She just couldn't take it anymore, so she shot him. >> Who shot him? >> The older lady. >> She shot him? >> Yes. >> Not an accidental. It's not accidental. >> Did she indicate it was in defense of someone else or herself? >> She says they've been fighting for days. He's a big boy. She's not She's not telling me what went on, what happened. He said whenever I got here, he said, "I won't tell. I won't tell. Don't tell them. I won't tell." >> Yeah, we need to Let's get her in your car. Ma'am. This deputy's going to have you sit in his car, okay? And we're going to check on You're not being handcuffed. You're just detained while we're doing our investigation. You. All right. [snorts] Would you go ahead and get her info and start checking her stuff? >> it. >> The whole situation looks way more tangled than it appears, and something isn't quite adding up. But what officers don't realize yet is that this story is heading toward a twist that changes the way the entire incident is viewed. For now, they turn their attention to the woman, Kathy Cann, who is believed to be the shooter. >> Was that your gun that we >> My My father-in-law's deceased father-in-law's. >> Okay. Well, ma'am, >> He gave it to me 50 years ago to protect myself from black people cuz I worked in Standard Rivier. >> Okay. Well, ma'am, I hope you understand we're conducting a criminal investigation. Someone's been shot. Okay. The person that was shot, who is he to you? >> He is my renter. >> Your renter? >> Mhm. He She used She rented from me, had rented from me for a long time. Then they got together. >> Mhm. >> Well, then he moved in. And they just fight and fight and fight. And I'd say, "You kids can't do this." >> Have we ever been called out here? >> No. >> No? >> No. Well, you may have with my husband. >> So, what what >> I I I'm not going to put up with it no more. >> Okay. What what led up to you shooting him today? >> I guess I just got so mad I could I didn't shoot her. >> Him? >> I just got so frustrated and aggravated and and it just keeping on and on and on. >> Cathy has already confessed to the crime, and she's about to be taken to the station to provide a written statement. But only if that were the end of the story. Meanwhile, officers go to check on Patricia, who is visibly shaken by everything that's happened. >> Hey. How are you? >> I don't want to know how Jeremy is. >> He's fi- He's doing good. He's doing good, all right? They're They're treating him. He's awake and conscious and breathing, all right? Those are great signs on any sort of injury like this, all right? >> Okay. >> And you know, it's a very small caliber weapon. He I mean, it was a .22. I could tell just by the first glance at it. So, uh even though being shot is very serious, I mean, a .22 with and where he got shot, he'll he'll probably make a full recovery, okay? But But I just want to keep you calm, all right? >> But as the case continues to unfold, she's is to reveal a darker side of this story. >> Right here. Right here. >> This is where he was shot at? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> And I was over here. >> You're over by the dresser? >> Yes. >> Which way were you facing? >> I was sitting on a white light box facing the bed. >> What What were you doing? Were you collecting clothes or >> my laundry. >> You were folding your laundry? >> Were you all in an active argument with each other? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, she came in and where was he standing at? >> He was right here. He was laying on the bed. And I don't want to say that he did anything, okay? That's not what this is about. But he stood up and he had some words with me and he he turned around and he was he's very mean with his mouth, okay? >> Mhm. >> And and he you see how big he is. He I don't know. I saw I had my head down because he smacked me, okay? He >> He smacked you? >> He did. And the next thing I know I heard the the the gun go off and I didn't even know there was a gun in here. And he just went down and he went down right here. >> Did you see her your landlord come in? >> [laughter] >> I didn't see her come in. I mean, it's all happened so fast. >> When you heard the shot, did you see where she was? >> She's right here. >> She was right here? >> right here. >> Okay. >> Right here. >> So, >> I saw him more than I saw her. >> I understand you'd probably be looking at him because he just got shot. >> With each passing second, it becomes more obvious that there are hidden layers to this story that still haven't been uncovered. Regardless, both Cathy and Patricia are taken to the station for a round of official questioning. And it's from here that the true, far more twisted story begins to reveal itself. >> He come on the scene and moved in and then he got that camper and they were going to move out cuz that's basically my son's house. My son lives there. >> Was he holding her arm? >> He was holding her shoulder. She She just like 3 something, maybe 4 ft tall and and he's 6 6. >> And he was shaking her? >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> And >> And was that the time that you shot or did he stop shaking her and >> shouldn't come after me and I just lost it. >> Were you scared? >> To be honest, I was more scared for her than I was myself. >> Kathy largely repeats the same story she had already confessed to at the scene, but one detail in particular stands out to the officers. She mentions that her son, Eddie Can, also lives on the property despite not being there at the time of the incident. Next, it's Patricia's turn to be interviewed and while officers expect to hear another account of the shooting, her statement begins to reveal a side of this story that is more crooked than anyone imagined. >> You were talking about drug use and all >> Sometimes. >> Yeah. What kind? >> Um marijuana. >> When was the last time that you know of? >> For me or him? >> Both. >> Today. Both. >> What time? >> About 4 times. >> Okay. Marijuana or meth? >> Both. >> Okay. Kind of balance these things out. >> Yeah. >> Why do you think Kathy shot him? >> I don't know. That's what I don't know. >> Patricia has already revealed a new side to the case involving drug use, but she isn't finished yet. As the interview continues, she begins describing allegations of domestic abuse, adding another layer to a story that is becoming way too complicated than the shooting itself. >> We're all We're all grown adults here. >> He just said I was a liar, cheating. He ain't calling me a [ __ ] you know. He gets so angry. >> How often has it gotten physical? >> [snorts] >> Between you two? >> What has he done? >> What has he done? >> A lot. >> Can you tell me? >> I don't want to talk about that. That's not I didn't >> That is relevant. >> It is. >> Yeah, but I don't He's not here for that, you know. I'm not here for that. He's He got shot. >> Right. >> By this point, it's becoming increasingly clear that Jeremy has a history of violent behavior. Officers later learn that he's also a convicted felon, but the biggest twist in the story arrives about a week later, when the victim, Jeremy, is finally well enough to speak. Officers swiftly move to seek answers they have been desperately looking for, but what they get instead is a version of events so unexpected that it changes the trajectory of the entire case. >> I mean, what happened to you that Saturday? >> I I was sleeping. The impression was that we got in a fight We were just having a fight like we always fight all the time. We always fight. I was very Usually it's already. So, he was like, "I'm over it." So, I got up and left. And then I uh >> I smacked him. >> You smacked Moe? >> Yes, I smacked Moe. Smacked Moe. Next thing I know he come in with a little stub nose. I don't know what kind of gun it was. Bang. >> One shot or two? >> Two. >> It was two shots? Okay. What did he say? >> She said, "You weren't supposed to do that, Eddie." >> Who said that? >> Trisha. >> Your girlfriend said that. >> He said, "You weren't supposed to do that, Eddie." I'm laying there god damn son of a [ __ ] >> No, it's okay. >> I'm laying there god damn it, Eddie. Why did you shoot me, god damn it? Why in the did you shoot me? Why? Why did you shoot me, mother >> Did he say anything? >> He just shot me. That's it. Boom. Happened real fast. >> What about his mom, Kathy? Where was she at? >> She was at the house. I don't know what the [ __ ] happened with her little story. But that's what happened. >> Eddie shot you. >> Eddie shot me in the point blank in the >> This comes as a major revelation in the case. It turns out that Eddie was the shooter all along, and Kathy had created an entire web of lies to protect her son, sending the investigation down a completely different path. But now that officers know who the real shooter is, the entire case takes a dramatic turn. Eddie is the person they need to speak with, but before they get to him, Kathy is brought in for another round of questioning. The cat is out of the bag and the story she's been telling can no longer hold up. >> You all know what's going on anyway. Don't you? >> You want to tell me? >> I mean, I just took the blame for my son and I said all I can do is tell you. >> Okay. Why did you do that? >> I loved my husband and I didn't want to lose my son. >> Did you see the shooting happen? >> No. >> Okay. Where were you when it happened? >> In the house. >> You're in the house. And then what did you hear? >> Eddie came in and said, "Mom, I'm shot." I said, "Oh my god, baby." Oh my god. >> Now, after getting a confirmed confession from Cathy that Eddie is the real shooter, officers finally bring him in for interrogation. >> Eddie. It's the sheriff's office. Eddie, let's see your hands. All right, come on out here. Come on out. >> Where's the dog at? >> I got to pee real bad. >> Thank you. >> Is there anybody else in there? >> Uh yeah, I got to pee real bad. >> What's your name? >> Here. >> Here. >> Yes, sir. >> All right. Here, step here. Come on out here. >> Okay, James. >> All right, Eddie. >> Yes, sir. >> I'm Sergeant Luke Tudor of the Grace County Sheriff's Office. >> Yes, sir. >> We need you to come down to the police department and talk to us, okay? >> Okay. >> All right. All right. You're going to go with this deputy. Do you have any weapons on you? >> No, nothing. >> Right here, he's going to pat you down make sure you don't have anything, okay? >> Yes, sir. >> Got anything in your waistband or anything? >> Nothing. Nothing in your shoes? >> But unlike his mother, Eddie couldn't be more different. As investigators begin questioning him, his way of responding would make anyone's blood boil. >> I got shot. Eddie was the one that shot. Jerry student. >> Okay, where did he shot at? >> It looks like somebody else. Area of the region. >> Okay, so who shot him? >> Eddie came in. >> I mean I wasn't there, but she was at my house and he got shot inside my house. I don't I don't know what I can how I can even, you know. >> Do you know how how long did you know Jeremy stood? >> I just I just knew they they dated me probably 3 4 months. Maybe 5 6 months. Maybe I don't know. I mean I don't know him, you know. I mean I haven't met him. He comes to the house and stuff here and there. He comes every day whatever, but >> So, you weren't there the day he got shot, no? >> Even when confronted with hard evidence, Eddie continues lying straight to the officer's faces. By now, the truth is closing in from every direction, but Eddie refuses to budge. >> Who shot him? >> I don't know. My mom, I guess, shot him supposedly. I wasn't there, so I don't know. I mean >> Why would Why would your mom shoot him? Your mom's a sweet old lady. >> Yeah, she She's not going to put up with somebody beating on somebody. I'm sorry, but I don't know where this is trying to go. My mom's a sweet old lady, I don't know. It's what, you know. Whatever I had >> If he dies tomorrow >> I mean I'll do whatever I have to do to get She don't But I mean >> What do you mean by that? >> What do you mean by that? What do I mean? Whatever I need to do to get keep my mom out of jail, man. I don't I don't know that. What Whatever I need to do. >> What? >> We don't have to talk about that. >> Do you believe your mom shot him? >> Absolutely. I I did I believe she would shoot him? >> Yes. >> I mean if he was hurting Christian and something would hurt, yeah, why wouldn't she? >> The officer is clearly growing frustrated with Eddie's blatant lies and tries a more stern approach. >> She admitted to giving me a false statement. >> I don't believe so. >> You don't believe so? It's all on the >> That's great. I mean I I don't I don't care if she did or not, but that's not what happened. I told you what happened. >> She told you what happened. Okay? >> Yeah, I'm sorry. >> You didn't shoot him? >> No, I didn't. >> Yeah? >> I don't know that. >> And you stayed in the house and you told her you shot him and she's scared for her son that she don't want him to go to prison because you just [clears throat] lost your dad, and she doesn't want to lose you, too. And you put her through this. >> I didn't put her through this. >> It's really sad. >> Even after being confronted with different tactics, Eddie refuses to confess. But by this point, that hardly concerns the officers. The evidence against him has already been gathered, and whether he admits it or not changes nothing. With enough to move forward, he's arrested on the spot. >> Stand up, put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest. >> Sorry, man. I don't know what you want me to tell you, but I don't I wasn't there. I don't I you you you're trying to make me upset with my mom, man. That's not cool. >> No, I don't want to It's not cool that you let her take the fall. >> I'm not letting her take the fall for nothing. You're not taking the fall. >> Eddie Cahn is charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. During the court proceedings, he also faces a charge of contempt of court and is classified as a first-degree persistent felony offender. But officers still need to uncover the reason behind why Eddie shot Jeremy. And for that, they reach out to the people who know the best case till now. >> Why do you think Eddie shot you? >> Just cuz I smacked his old lady. I smacked his old lady. >> Did he say why he shot him? >> Because he was beating her and he was hitting him. >> Okay. Why didn't he stay on scene and talk to us? >> I don't know. >> Okay. >> Okay, now what is that? >> However, Kathy Cahn passes away on December 9th, 2023, roughly a year and a half after the shooting. But the story takes one final unexpected turn. A little over a year after Kathy's death, and apparently before Eddie is ever sentenced, he becomes involved in a head-on collision with a dump truck. In March 2025, Eddie Cahn is pronounced dead, bringing a sudden and unusual end to a case already filled with twists.
