He's just so sick. >> [laughter] [screaming] >> That's what I understood from what she was telling me. It's possible she left the BABY IN THE >> [screaming] >> ON MARCH 3RD, 2025, Albuquerque police respond to an apartment on San Pablo SE, where firefighters are already trying to save the life of a 7-month-old baby. As of baby, he's probably not going to make it. The family is pretty hysterical. We do have some Spanish and English speaking. The lady in the yellow I guess is grandma. She's going to lose it. I mean, they're probably all there. What happened? It didn't seem like anything fell play, but baby's been a little sick with some respiratory stuff. Sounds like they were taking a nap. Baby was napping and he just wasn't waking. So Yeah, I don't know. It's a Is the family inside? No, I had to kick them out. As crews work desperately to revive the infant, officers start speaking with the family. What initially appears to be a medical crisis soon takes an unsettling turn, and the baby's mother, Edith Estrada Segala, draws their attention. He had walking pneumonia at the beginning of the year. Today, he woke up stuffy all weekend. He's been stuffy for the And he's been up all night just with the stuffy during a >> [laughter] >> They're They're still working on him. What is baby's name? Adriel. Adriel? Adriel. Adriel. Okay. And his uh last name? Estrada. Estrada. Okay. Okay. He was already He's been just stuffy. Okay. So, we had you guys come down here Just see he's really sick. He's not doing well. I know this is a lot. Well, that's okay. That's possible. Excuse me. I think my husband Oh. While an officer enters the apartment to check on the infant, the tension outside grows as everyone waits anxiously for an update. At the moment, no one knows whether the baby will survive. But more astonishingly, how did the baby end up in this situation and mother suddenly pass out, raising doubts about whether it was intentional or just an accident? There's an attendant right there, right? Yeah, they're still working on Yeah. So, what's up? It's really Once he comes out I'm going to go inside now. Once that comes out, that's what happened. Um once they They were hungry. Um hopefully they get a pulse. If not we're going to sadly tell you, but they're trying their best, okay? They're still working on him. What happened to the baby She speaks English. Struggles to save the baby are ongoing, but then the mother breaks down in hysterics. Meanwhile, officers urgently ask about the child's medical history, seeking any information that might assist life-saving efforts. He had walking pneumonia, too. He's been sick. He's been just like And then I started giving baby Tylenol. It's not working. He's been just coughing. What was her name again? Edith Estrada. She's just coughing. So I called in to work today cuz he's been just so bad. He was just so sick. The medical history offers little help to responders, and outside, the baby's mother and relatives become increasingly distraught with each passing moment. >> [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] [laughter] [snorts] [laughter] >> Just as they struggle to cope with the baby's worsening condition, the situation takes a devastating turn that leaves everyone shaken. >> I need everybody to listen to me, please. Can I go look at the scene now? Give us a So my buddy just told me that inside the firemen have stopped doing CPR. They talked to the doctor on the phone. And because there are no signs of life for 20 minutes um Adriel has passed away today. >> [screaming] [laughter] [screaming] [laughter] [laughter] [screaming] [screaming] [crying] >> The cries echo through the hallway with the heartbreaking news of the death of 7-month-old Adriel. For this family, the worst has just been confirmed. Are you wanting to get everybody out? Yeah. We're working on it. I'm not helping them get out, all right? No, no, no, no. We [laughter] need to go tell them that he's not happening. But as officers process the scene, something about the situation raises concern. Suspecting there may be more to the story, officers begin searching the apartment, and what they uncover quickly deepens the mystery, raising serious concerns. Time is wet. Okay. That's what I understood from what she was telling me. It's possible she left the baby in the the Yeah, that's what I got. >> [snorts] >> The possibility that she may have left the baby in the bathtub increases with the discovery. To confirm their doubts, baby Adriel is transported to the hospital for an autopsy. Meanwhile, she is quickly taken in for interrogation, and it is there that the case begins to shift, revealing the chilling side of a mother. I was just kind of cleaning up and doing some laundry. And he was just there watching cartoons. But he does have a lot diaper rash, which we've been trying to control for eight years. So, that's why I started the bath that way he could breathe as well cuz he was choking up. And >> [snorts] >> So, I just started [laughter] the bath. I closed the door that way he could get steamy for him. >> [snorts] >> I got him undressed. He was wearing some blue pants. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt. He was dressed up. >> [laughter] [snorts] >> I undressed him and then I put his toys in the bathtub. You put him in there because I was still doing laundry and the children were home. >> [snorts] >> And I was still waiting for the dryer to be done. >> [snorts] >> He was just playing with his toys. They I don't know how I just fell asleep. She then goes on to explain how she had woken up and it wasn't triggered by her baby at all. >> [laughter] >> So whenever I got up, well, my mom was knocking the door open. I didn't hear my phone. She had called me but I didn't hear my phone. I think my phone was like on low. So when [snorts] I opened the door, I was just kind of half asleep. I opened the door. It was my mom. So then she asked me about Adriel. And I went back inside the room and [clears throat] I was still half asleep. I So then right away I rushed to the bathtub. And that's when I found him. Uh but we stated that uh Aiden or I'm sorry, Adriel had pneumonia so you had put him down for a nap and both of you fell asleep. That's something that came through somewhere. Does that Does that seem Something? Yeah. Is that something that you told somebody or Not pneumonia. I had like I said again and like knew that baby was coughing really bad. Okay. So he knew like my job I even told them that he was coughing pretty bad. That was making him gag so that's why I was going to take the day off and I couldn't go in. Okay. Her claims sounded genuine but what comes next reveals the clear neglect of a mother. Investigators begin to pressing her on the key issues, confronting her with the inconsistencies. So one thing I did notice when we were going through there there was a pretty a pretty There was a lot of empty alcohol containers. >> Mhm. So you're the only adult that lives there, right? So is it safe to say that you're the one that's consuming that? Um I was consuming that. I did have a couple friends over. Okay. Um and then honestly I would >> [snorts] >> leave the house and go to my boyfriend's house and like, you know, not drinking but like it was here and there. Haven't I've been home here and there but it's been inconsistent honestly and I haven't had friends over. I did have a shot. Okay. While I was doing laundry. Okay. Um and was this When was this? Like >> [snorts] >> Was this while Adriel was in the bath? Was this when he was sleeping? >> sleeping. Yeah. Okay. So you put him down for his nap about 10 and he woke up at 12 and from 10 to 12 is when you took that shot. Okay. Yeah, he woke up like at 12:01 honestly. I know he slept for a couple hours and yeah, that's when. Okay. Okay. However, officers aren't convinced as they can still smell alcohol on her, contradicting her statement. Then she finally breaks, admitting a harsh truth that raises troubling questions about her choices and if she actually cared about her child. The thing is is it doesn't What you're saying kind of doesn't make sense but I believe that you drank today. I just don't think you're being honest with me and I think you need to be honest with me and honestly honest with yourself. >> 100% I took a shot today. I did because I drank yesterday so it was just kind of to take the hangover away or like I don't know, just do something. So you're So you're going to maintain that we took one shot today. Yes. Okay. I'm going to go back to life experience. All right. >> Um Do you think you have a drinking problem? At this point, yeah. Okay. Why do you believe that is? Because honestly he was going to be drinking. Like yesterday I drank and then I took a shot like to do laundry, you know? So you think that's indicates you have a problem? I feel like yeah. >> Despite no confirmed evidence of intoxication at the time, Edith faces charges for her negligence. This officer is going to place you under arrest, all right? We do have a warrant for your arrest. Um you'll you'll be able to get a copy of it. You'll kind of see the charges there. Obviously child abuse resulting in death. Okay. Um He's going to transport you. Again, I asked you like I talked about earlier like you've been very cooperative. Um you know, I think it it kind of be here in your best interest to be cooperative moving forward in terms of, you know, letting him do what he needs to do. He's a great guy. He's a good cop. Her case is ongoing in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court. However, she was released from jail in March 2025 under strict conditions. Edith's trial is scheduled for March 2026 and no sentencing has occurred as the case remains in the pre-trial stage.
