Involved in the collision was 35-year-old Sarah Classen, who was a Washington State Patrol Trooper. She was off duty and told police she was heading home from picking up pizza. >> What do we know? >> Um when I got here, they were just loading him in the ambulance. I think he was still >> Yeah, not doing good. You okay? I mean, I I know you're not, but like you're physically good. That's all That's all him his blood? >> Yeah, it's his blood. Yeah, I know he Literally when I turned, he was past that sign maker. And I thought it was car with the headlight out. >> She explained how the motorcyclist had sped into her car when turning the corner, making it appear as though he was at fault. But the truth of how the accident took place would later be revealed. >> It was his motorcycle. But uh yeah, I turned and So he turned right in here. Just So what the [ __ ] is that? >> No, but like physically I'm I just I saw blood on my guy's arm. >> No, I did CPR and >> Yeah. >> I don't know if he's breathing. >> No. >> No, he was dead then, but >> He was a Well, um not yet. It's not. >> Oh, he's Oh, he's still got it? >> Well, they're still like last >> That's how he was going that way. >> Okay. >> They took him. It's a SUV versus a motorcycle. Motorcyclist, I don't know if he's going to make it, but the SUV driver is 478. Uh she wasn't She's not working. This personal stuff. But we're out here trying to get a hold of a tech infinite tech. I already talked to a LT, so he's going to just make sure he gets CID coming. It's nothing really criminal. She was She saw a motorcycle, but she's like, "Oh, I thought it was a car with one headlight out." And then she's like, "Oh, plenty of time to turn in." She's like trying to turn into her street to go to go home and she's like all of a sudden just hit me. So, um yeah, I don't know how how fast he was going or anything. But, he was he wasn't looking good. They took him to the hospital, but he wasn't looking good. I'll be back. Is Trent coming? >> He was at the house. He was like, "You want to uh draw it to it?" >> Why do you want to be here by yourself? >> No, I want a sweater, though. >> [laughter] >> Um >> But, he just didn't know if he should come or not. >> I mean, he can just Yeah, you can sit here. Um that's probably best. >> Okay. >> I would say that's best than better than all this, so. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> I'll tell him to come in his car. >> Yeah. >> But, really like when I turned I was slowing down. The motorcycle was like past that reflective sign. >> Yeah. >> And at first I thought it was a car with a headlight out. >> The strangest part about the situation was Classen's response to the situation. There didn't appear to be an ounce of remorse for the fatally injured cyclist. >> I'm going to Mexico on Monday. >> You think you still go to Mexico? >> What's that? >> You can still go to Mexico. >> I know, but I'm like >> Yeah. >> I should just save the $6 delivery fee. So, I'll be there. It's fine. >> Yeah. Can you um can you talk to him just real quick? Do you want my jacket? I have a jack I actually >> No, Trent's coming. >> Trent's coming? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Um yeah, I have a jacket if you I just have an extra jacket, but yeah. >> Yeah. You don't have to wear this anyways. Cuz he's already pissed. He was drinking at home, so >> Oh, yeah. That was good. I hope he's Hopefully he's not driving. He doesn't need to be driving. >> Oh, no, he's not like drunk drunk, but he's like, "I I a couple drinks. I don't want I was like, can you bring me a jacket?" I'm pretty sure. >> Yeah, I have a just a black blue jacket. I hope we'll get I'll get you a jacket. >> No, you're fine. He'll be here in a second. >> Nice stuff. Keep you safe. I know. Uh right. Uh it's on recording. Um so, just want to make sure you're good. And they're going to take this whole thing. I probably talked to you already. Uh all of our guys are There's another fatal hit-and-run. >> Firefighters and paramedics tried to save 20-year-old Jose Sanchez's life, but he was severely injured and pronounced dead at Kadlec Regional Medical Center. >> He is deceased. >> Or he is >> That officer is going to go and sounds like his vehicle returns Pasco, but it sounds like we've got a local address it's right around here. >> Oh, right around Oh, okay. >> He's going to go and contact the family and let them know. >> Okay. Thank you. Um she was willing to wanted to take some stuff out of the car. I'm like, "No, wait. Let me see what Rachel wants to do. Is she good to go take some stuff out or >> Let's just leave it for now. >> Yeah, yep. And then they can do whatever. Okay, good. Um good. Uh she's going to stand by here. Are you good with her sitting in my car or >> Yeah, totally. >> Okay. Yeah, I'll go clear my seat. Yeah, you bet. Thank you. >> [snorts] >> I'll clear my front seat. Uh there traffic guys are coming in soon and then once they clear it, then you can go back inside and grab your stuff, I guess. >> I don't have to do anything here. >> Yep. Uh here, I'll I'll clear my seat. Uh if you want to sit in my car until then. Oh. >> [snorts] >> Yep, nope. Nope. No, there's No, you're not going to sit in the back. Absolutely not. Sorry. >> No, you're fine. >> All right. >> I'm going to call dispatch real quick. >> I don't feel good. I don't want to move too much. Real quick. >> I'm >> This is like I'm bleeding. >> It's It's It's minor. Probably Probably not yet. Let me Let me ask them what to do what they want to >> It's sticking to my legs. >> Sticking to your legs, yeah. Uh Yeah, I don't think I have anything else in my car. Let me Let me talk to dispatch. All right, yeah, so just They're coming. They're almost here, so I know it's sticking to your legs, but Yeah, sorry. Um [snorts] I don't know what else I Oh, man, I had a lot of blankets at home and thought I was going to throw in my car. >> Oh, no worries. [snorts] This is all blood in between the skin and the legs. No, you're getting it on your skin. >> [snorts] >> Uh So, you don't want to sit in the car? You just can't sit in the car? >> I just feel a little angsty. >> Yeah. >> [snorts] >> Well, I'll I'll be honest with you. I I would love to rule out impairment, but without the fields, it is hard to rule that out. Obviously, it's voluntary. I won't I won't ask you again, but um there there may always be that question. >> Yeah. >> down the road. >> I I just rather not. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Classen refused to answer questions about whether she had been drinking, but the investigation found Classen had spent nearly 4 hours at a local bar with her husband before the crash. >> I know how it goes, too, so >> Yeah. What What do you mean you know how it goes? >> I Even if there's like a little if I had something had a glass of wine earlier or something like that. I I just don't want I just don't want to do that. >> Okay. >> Yeah. But No, I definitely don't feel impaired. I don't feel like there was impairment as an issue. And I >> Did you have a glass of wine earlier? >> I'm not going to answer that. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Okay. You You just mentioned like if >> If I If I would have Yeah, or had Yeah. But Yeah. >> After she >> on Sarah's sobriety were raised, they came to the realization that they would be having to place one of their own under arrest. >> I think she has something on board. >> Do you really? >> I am. Yeah, is there >> Is there >> We we have to. >> Is there going to be enough to search warrant? >> So, yeah, I'll write it. >> Which >> I mean, unless you want >> What what changed? >> So, I was just studying her um her She got a >> a couple misspelled words on here. >> Okay. >> She wrote si sign. She said she she said 100 ft. She um sorry, I'm going a little fast. She She estimated the uh the distance between the guy on the motorcycle and her to be 100 ft. >> Which that's way more than 100. That's like Yes. 500 ft. >> Um she said she was almost through her turn when clearly she was at the very beginning of her turn, right? Her eyes are a little bit glassy, a little bit. >> What are those lights for? >> But could be could be, but we got to err on the side of caution. >> Okay. >> I do not have a great sense of smell, but I think I smelled a little bit of odor of alcohol, enough for me to say. And then I I told her, I'm like, "Hey, we just want to rule out impairment. And by you not doing it I'm like I'm not going to ask you again." But I'm like, "We can't rule it out." He said, "Yeah, well, if I would have had a glass of wine earlier, I know how this goes." And I said, "Didn't you have a glass of wine earlier? You said I'm not going to ask you that." So, >> Okay. >> I think with everything um We Yeah, we have to. I mean, I will write the search warrant. Um >> Oh. >> Um but yeah, I'm still recording. I'm still recording. I I would have loved to have ruled it out. I will mute you. >> Investigators on the scene noted the damage on Classen's vehicle signaled her SUV had hit the motorcycle on the front right fender. And police also determined Sanchez was traveling 53 miles per hour in the 55 miles per hour designated area. >> I will meet you. >> All right. So, like I said, we were really trying to rule alcohol out. I I'm not convinced that alcohol wasn't a factor. So, right now you are under arrest. Okay? >> Okay. >> So, go ahead and put your hands behind your back. So, we will be um doing a search warrant for blood, okay? That way there will be no questions. What was that? >> What was that? >> Oh. And then it'll be the first braids over here. So, let's just have a seat right here. Let's go take these these handcuffs off of you and we'll we'll utilize the one on the wall. Do you need any water or anything for right now? >> No, I'm good. >> You're okay? >> Do you think you could zip up my jacket? >> You want to zip your jacket up? >> Yeah. >> It's just asking. >> Yeah, you can zip it up right now. My knees are really cold. >> Your pants are still wet, too. You must be chilling. >> Sure. >> Um I'll check on you periodically. You don't need any water or anything for right now? >> No, I'm good. Thank you. >> All right. Let me um I'll just leave my body camera here. It's just standard normal procedure. >> Okay. No worries. >> All right. >> Thank you. Bye. >> Um all right. so they um did get a warrant for the blood, so we're going to do that now. >> Okay. Can I use your restroom, please? >> Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, there's one right across the way. So, I don't know. >> Okay, thank you. >> I'm just going to grab this right here. Just grab that right there. All right, appreciate that. I think that is all I need. It's okay, thank you for coming. >> Is he going to have something for me over there? >> I don't know what he has going on over there. >> All right. >> All right, so I need to get a couple signatures from you and then we'll be good out of here. >> Did Were any of the Cuz like I said, when I was doing CPR, there were several other witnesses around after the collision. Did any of those guys stick around nearby? >> Uh I don't know. I don't know. I I believe so. Um somebody made mention of a video that came out or something shortly thereafter. I don't know. I got called to to the scene after >> Yeah, after the accident. >> After Yeah, yeah, as as a traffic investigator, yeah. So, um So So, yeah, it was a while before I got there. So, a lot of those loose ends, I think the other traffic investigators kind of wrapped up. I I'm just not privy to those. >> Lab results obtained in April showed Klassen's blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was .17, more than twice the legal limit. Classen has been on administrative leave since the crash. She's scheduled for an arraignment hearing later in September. Thanks for watching till the end.
