On a hot August morning in New Mexico, [music] police receive a call that every hotel manager dreads making. A 2-year-old child has been found wandering the hallways and the parking lot, [music] completely alone. But when staff traced the child back to a room, [music] they didn't find a frantic parent searching for their baby. They found a mother who was so [music] incapacitated, she didn't even know her child was missing. What you are about to see is a welfare check [music] that quickly turns into a criminal investigation. >> Hi. >> Morning. I'm officer. Good luck. Are you Riley? >> Yes, sir. >> Nice to meet you. What's going on? >> Um, so this morning I got a call from my little customer saying there's a little kid running around screaming, crying. Next thing I know, my housekeeping walking down with her and housekeeping walked into the room. Nobody was in there. It was just her and child and a bag of chips. Out. I'm following the registration number >> 47 >> and it was her grandmother. She gave me a phone number. It was also grandmother. They both zoom. >> But next thing you know there should be a lady called Rose aunt who invited her >> from Bloomfield. Right. >> Yes. And now house went back into double check it. She's in there in 152 but she is on the spot in three spot. >> Okay. When did the initial call come out that there was a kid wandering around? >> 811. >> 8:11. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. And then she housekeeping found her and brought her down here. >> Yes. So, she's just in the breakfast area eating right now. >> And when housekeeping went to the room, there was nobody else in there with her >> at the time at 81. Yes. Now, she's in there. Not as >> Okay. All right. We'll go talk with the kid. Morning. >> Housekeeping. >> Housekeeping. Okay. >> McKay. >> How you doing? McKay. How old are you? >> Five. Okay. Do you guys know her last name? >> Probably. >> That's under the registration name. Who is the registered >> Dwayne? You guys seen Dwayne? >> Do you know who the female is? >> Mrs. McKay. And then Rose Bloomfield. >> And that's aunt. >> Okay. How long have they been staying at the hotel for? >> I believe just the night. Just the reg. >> Okay. Maybe you want to stay with the kid and I'll go and talk to >> mom or whoever. >> Say nonresponsive like she's not answering the door or she's just passed out. >> She passed out or just not answering. >> Cuz I tried. >> All right, we can open it. >> Sure. She's okay. Hey, Farmington police. >> Ma'am, wake up. Ma'am, Farmington police. >> Can you wake up? Police department. Come on. You got to wake up. >> Hi there. Are you all right? >> Yeah. >> What the heck are you doing? >> Is it running out time to check out? >> I don't know about your checkout time. What's that? >> Where's your daughter? >> She's at home. >> What's your daughter's name? >> Mai. >> Mai. >> Okay. How old is she? >> She's like two. >> She's two. >> She like my my grandma and my uncle. >> She's two years old. >> How many kids do you have? >> One. >> And Mai is two years old. >> Yeah. She's like, >> where's home? >> Bloodfield. >> Gloomfield. What's your grandma's name? >> Okay. >> Fanny. >> Okay. We have her in the lobby. >> Me. >> And she's not 2 years old. How old is she? >> My grandma? >> No, your daughter. >> My daughter's only two. >> Really? She's a big 2-year-old. Okay. >> What's your name, ma'am? >> Dia. >> Where's Dwayne at? >> Yeah. Is there Dwayne that's staying here? Is it just you? I just me and my sisters, but my sisters had to leave. I was supposed to be at my last place, right? >> Notice the level of confusion here. It took officers several minutes of pounding on the door just to wake her up. Now that she is conscious, she has no idea what day it is or where her daughter actually is. She attempts to shift the blame, claiming the child was supposed [music] to be with a grandmother or a sister. But the officers have already verified the truth. those relatives checked out [music] hours ago. This mother was left alone with her toddler and instead of caring for her, she passed out, leaving a 2-year-old to roam a public hotel unsupervised. >> Drinking a little bit last night. >> Last night? Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, why how long you been here for? >> Last night. >> Since last night, what time did you guys check in? M happened to be like maybe 8 9ish last night. >> Okay. You and your sister? >> Yeah. >> What's your sister's name? >> Malaya. >> Malayaia. Where she at? >> She's out there in Colorado. >> But she checked in last night with you guys. >> Yeah. >> And then what time did she leave? >> Uh like around 6:00 7 this morning. >> 4. Do you know what time it is right now? >> Oh my god. >> How intoxicated did you guys get last night? >> A lot. >> So, the reason why we're here is obviously we got your daughter over there in the lobby and she's you said she's 2 years old. So, that's concerning, right? And then housekeepers come in here >> and check on you guys because your daughter's out in the hallway. >> They come in here and nobody's in here. boy. >> So, where were you at? >> Where were you at during that time, ma'am? When >> obviously laying here? >> Well, no. They said they came in and they said nobody was in here. >> I was laying here. I don't I don't remember nothing. I just remember you waking me up and I'm like, "What's going on?" >> Well, they came in here about maybe 30 minutes ago because your daughter was outside. >> They came in and you weren't here. Your daughter was by herself. >> Oh god. >> So, were you gone or were you in here? >> I have no idea. Literally, I literally spoke of the news that we're here. >> Okay. Do you have anything for her in here? I see obviously the the tablet. >> Nothing else that's in here. Okay. >> No. >> Well, you see how this looks, right? >> Bad. >> Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't look very good cuz you're in here. You're super intoxicated. I mean, you wouldn't even wake up. >> Exactly. I'm so >> And then your daughter's out there running around in the hallway. You know, that's >> that's potentially uh neglect. So >> Oh, cuz she said that she had left the her with either you or the ant >> and you guys were supposed to watch her and she was coming here to party. >> Well, that's all she >> Okay. But yeah, that's what she's saying right now. >> Okay. Apparently, she wanted to go party in your but she didn't. And normally me or my son have her at the house and we don't let her take her if she knows that if we know she's going to do that. That's why we always tell her you leave the baby here if you're going to go do whatever. >> We don't tell her no because we know she's going to do it anyway. So whatever she's, you know, >> that's a thing. >> Yeah. So she lied about arrangements. So there were never any arrangements. We don't let her. We always take her when she's going to go party cuz we know she's going to do it anyways. And she said they were just going to go to the park. Yeah, >> this is >> Mhm. >> Yeah. >> Can we just have you step outside real quick? Okay. All right. Okay. Remember to run. >> Okay. Go and step out of the bed. >> Do you want to take your phone with you to have phone numbers? Where's your feet? Ma'am, did you have a vehicle or anything here that might have diapers or something for your kid? >> Okay. >> Did you need anything else? >> No. >> Okay. >> You got your phone? >> Yeah. The investigation concludes that [music] this was not a simple mistake. It was criminal negligence. The officers determined that the mother is too intoxicated [music] to care for herself, let alone a child. She is [music] placed under arrest for child abuse. While she sleeps it off in a jail cell, her [music] daughter is placed into protective custody. Safe finally from the very person supposed to protect >> [music]
