At that time, we heard help again and I I recognized the the the voice uh from Patty. >> Police are called to a Florida RV park after multiple witnesses report hearing screams for help. But as investigators piece together what happened inside the trailer, ma'am 31, I need EMS to my location. Two unconscious people out on the floor have been cut. >> They uncover a history of warnings that make the case far more disturbing than it first appears. >> And like I said, we warned the courts. I don't know why they think that they know better than the family. You know what I'm >> Yeah. I I 100% understand where you're coming from. >> Yeah. It the system failed. >> They sure did. And I was afraid this was going to happen. All of a sudden, we just heard bang. >> It's just after noon on the 25th of February, 2022 in Manatee County, Florida. Police are dispatched to an RV park after multiple callers report hearing screams and signs of a violent disturbance. Ben 911. What's the address of your emergency? Tell me exactly what happened. >> Me and my husband are sitting in our house and I said pause the TV. I hear screaming and when I started coming towards the door, I seen a guy take off towards the road and I looked to my left and there's a guy coming out from around about four campers up from us and he's up all down. >> Witnesses describe hearing cries for help. Several neighbors report hearing crashing, banging, and what appears to be a violent struggle inside one of the trailers. >> All of a sudden, we just heard bang. And I looked up at the camper, the trailer, and you could see the window, you know, the wall and the window flexing. >> Mhm. >> And and no more sound. It was dead silence. He was on the phone to 911. >> Before officers even reach the victims, one deputy notices a suspicious man walking nearby. The deputy tries speaking with him, but the moment the man notices police attention, he begins moving away. >> I'm not trying to arrest you. I'm trying to make sure you're okay. >> Oh, no. >> Hey, wait. Just come here real quick. >> He started walking real real fast. Like when he saw me, he started taking off. >> All right. Which way did you take off? >> He took off west on 57th. Um, he is very very agitated. I'm going to go to the victim and see if we have any sort of charges, but I do know that he is very schizophrenic and very uh signal 20. >> The officer doesn't have enough information to detain him yet. So, he turns his attention back toward the original emergency call. That decision would become important only minutes later. >> As soon as you enter in, they're both they're both on the ground. >> If I'm not mistaken, this is not a suspect. Inside the residence, officers discover a scene far worse than anyone expected. Patricia Madagic and her fianceé Sha Harrison are both found unconscious on the floor. The injuries are immediately obvious, but responders quickly realize there is little they can do. Both victims have suffered extensive wounds during what appears to have been an extremely violent attack. >> I think I know cowboy here. I don't think it was cowboy. >> As investigators secure the scene, attention shifts back to the man seen leaving the area. And almost immediately, someone recognizes him. >> I think it was probably her son. And he's got they've got a restraining order on him. He's not even supposed to be here is what I know. >> Okay. >> But that's all I know. >> Here. Um, do you ever do anybody any chance? >> Uh, motor home back here. And this lady, this lady who lives right behind me on this side of the street, we all heard I heard, "No, stop. Help." And then I didn't hear anything for a little bit. And I So we all came walking this way to try and find out what was going on. And then I heard, "No, help again." At that time, I turned around and went and started calling dial 911. And but that's basically all. And and then as we were down here, you could hear, you know, banging like she'd been, you know, they were rrestling or throwing each other around the room, you know. But uh that's that's all I that's all I know. >> According to witnesses familiar with the family, the man officers encountered is Patricia's adult son, Thomas. Thomas wasn't supposed to be at the property. At this point, investigators begin focusing all available resources on locating him. But catching Thomas proves more difficult than expected. understand what I put. >> Stop right there. >> Twice officers spot him. Twice he manages to slip away. Each time he disappears, investigators become increasingly concerned that valuable evidence could disappear with him. Meanwhile, detectives continue examining the crime scene. >> So, so was she. So, this door was open. >> Yes. >> Okay. Door open. >> And he on the other side. >> Yeah, he was around that >> inside the trailer. Investigators locate what appears to be the weapon used during the attack, but it isn't hidden. It's sitting inside a sink beneath running water. According to officers, blood is later detected in the water surrounding it. >> So, it looks like the weapon used is in the >> back the whatever that thing is called where you wash the dishes. >> Well, he wasn't Was he here when you got here? >> No, I saw him down the road and I was trying to be with him. You knew who he was though? >> I do know who he is. >> I'm going to grandparent. >> To detectives, the placement is difficult to ignore because it suggests someone may have tried to wash away evidence before leaving. The more evidence investigators collect, the more the timeline begins pointing in one direction. Not long afterward, officers spot Thomas once again. Do it again. Hey, I think it's best that you don't say anything right now. Okay. >> So, you angry or that? I feel racing. >> You got a sharps container or anything? >> No. >> Raise it. >> Oh, that was a different >> Yeah, double one up. Yeah, I think there's another needle or what? >> No, it's just points. >> While officers begin transporting him to the station, family members start arriving at the crime scene. What they tell investigators paints a troubling picture. >> Tom is delusional. He really is. He thinks he thinks. Now, if you look at the court records, his own attorney said that's how they got him incompetent. He thinks he's dating Katy Perry. He really does. He left Michigan, drove to California, and laid on the beach waiting for Katy Perry to come see him. Then he would call me up and say that he um that Katy Perry was just at my house. And then he thinks he has these billions of dollars that people are stealing from him. He's extremely delusional. And he thinks that Patty and Sean has I mean obviously look what they live in that he stole all their money and he wants his money back. And like it said, we warned the courts. I don't know why they think that they know better than the family. You know what I'm >> Yeah. I I 100% understand where you're coming from. I >> Yeah, it the system failed. >> They sure did. And I was afraid this was going to happen. I really did. And and she knew it, too. >> One detail stands out above all the others. Family members say they repeatedly warned authorities they feared someone would eventually get hurt. Now, investigators are standing inside a homicide scene, wondering whether those fears had finally become reality. At the station, detectives begin asking simple questions. >> So, do you know where your mom lives? >> Yeah. >> Where is that at? >> Um, arbitrary. >> Arbit, but I own it. Yeah. >> Okay. You own it? >> Do you live there? >> No. >> Do you have any belongings there? >> No. >> No. Okay. When was the last time you >> own land and I own half of land? No. Oh, >> if I don't, then I'm not in the same [ __ ] room. >> I got you. So, >> when was the last time you What was the last time you at your mom's house? >> Um, when I got accused of beating him up. >> Okay. You were a Were you there today? >> I got a burglar to the battery. No, I was not. >> Okay. But you weren't there today at all? >> No, at all. >> Okay. >> The answers come quickly. Thomas denies everything. He insists he was never there. He claims he hasn't seen his mother in months. And for a brief moment, investigators allow him to continue talking. But the more he speaks, the stranger the conversation becomes. >> I know he over there. She said, "So you were never at your mom." >> This never happened like so few months ago. >> I got a burglary in the battery >> and I didn't talk to none of you guys for six five months and then charged me in confident >> and then it was just released and now I'm sitting here and I get switched like two or three worlds since then. boxes back at home like space boxes. So, >> so I won't >> any trust me any So, so my thing I'll tell you right now so so you go back out this bridge. Next thing you know, you're you're in a portal. You're by this guy >> like a doorway like invisible. I was walk all of a sudden I get to like I'm just my head down not paying attention and then boom. And then all of a sudden at the um I start cheating like better start running. And all of a sudden that kid comes around nowhere. So kid what? And he's like recording me. I'm like I didn't do nothing, dude. He's like, "You better start running. You better start running." And he's recording me on his cell phone. It's funny as hell. And I'm like, "I didn't do nothing, kid." You know, and um just a couple, you know, and just a couple months ago or when I got out, he's right there ready to start beating me up. I'm like, "I don't even know who the kid is." >> Same kid. say 17, but >> it doesn't make any sense. I bought the whole hill street now, but it doesn't it doesn't make any sense. >> I'm trying to put a piece of yogurt now, you know? Like >> Yeah. How how all of a sudden you got over there? >> Yeah. And then I'm running I jump in the water. I feel a hell of a lot better. Like waking up. >> Oh, you did jump in the water? >> Yeah. >> Where at? Which water? >> Pounders. >> Top of high that the the pond or something like that. Did so you just jumped in there or you just >> Yeah. >> I was going to ask you why why you were all wet? >> I had to start walking. I'm like I fell out better like I woke up or something. >> So So you started walking. You go through this portal. You wind up by the battery shop and now you're behind Tommy Knockers in the pond, right? >> Yeah. >> Okay. You just So you you just walk in the pond by yourself. Nothing. You just did it on your own. >> Okay. So after you came out of the pond, what happened? I walked right back to the street follow. And then I didn't see the guy at all. And then the kid the kid shows up though on the bike and record me. You better start running. You start running. Why you going to L Street? I'm going L I'm saying you know I'm think now like this is a joke. Okay. So I'm so then I get arrested and I'm asking why am I being arrested? So I was like the burglar the better say anything. >> Yeah. >> Thomas begins describing alternate worlds, invisible portals, billions of dollars he believes belong to him and elaborate theories explaining why he keeps being moved between realities. Detectives quickly realize they're struggling with more than simple denial. They are trying to interview someone whose perception of reality appears deeply disconnected from the evidence surrounding him. >> I am the victim. I'm not This is This is bull. I am getting set up somehow. I get a burglary with a battery on their I get this on him. All right. And then Okay. I But then let's go back now. Let's go. Okay. Now, now I walk in. I walk in the racetrack. Okay. The people know who I am or somebody at least slipping a message. Just let the guy grab who he wants. So I don't own I own everything but have nothing. >> Okay. >> Okay. Now put yourself in my shoes. I don't know what happened. I don't care what happened. I don't give a [ __ ] about them because I don't give a [ __ ] >> Oh shoes, man. >> Real bad. >> Where your shoes though? >> Piece of [ __ ] >> Were you Were you wearing shoes earlier today? >> Where? >> Were you wearing shoes? >> Yeah, we took them off. >> Who took them off? >> The cops. >> Oh, >> I told him you're done tested, too. Oh, I thought I just assumed you were >> I get a little upset because I keep telling everybody in my whole life, anybody that's wrong, I get switch worlds. I swear to God, there's like thousand space. Supposed to be a space lord or some looked up in the sky the other day. >> Still, one problem remains. The physical evidence doesn't care what Thomas believes, and investigators already have witnesses placing him near the scene. Soon, they reveal something even stronger. A surveillance camera captured a man matching Thomas leaving the trailer shortly after the attack. Detectives confront him with the information >> over at your mom's house today. >> Yes. >> There's video of you in that part like leaving leaving her house. It's on somebody's surveillance. The ring camera. You know what the ring camera is? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. So, you're on ring camera leaving the house. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, can you just tell me what happened over at your mom's house today? >> Wasn't there on camera? >> Okay. Well, why don't we see it? We're seeing it. >> Okay, fair enough. >> All right. >> So, if if I was able to show you the ring video, what what would what happened over at your mom's house? >> I didn't go. >> You didn't go. >> But you there? >> No. >> No. >> No. That's >> So, is the camera wrong? >> I was there. I was But I want to see it. I want to see it. >> What? I got to download it from the ring. I just saw it on somebody's phone. They're able to show me, right? So, we got to take It takes I can't just get it right away. >> At first, he refuses to believe it. Then, he questions whether the footage exists at all, but he never offers a clear explanation for why witnesses, officers, and cameras all appear to place him in the same location. >> The video shows you leaving the house. So, we're getting I've got the video. We're going to have it download. I just don't have it right now. All right. And this is the time that I I need this is why I need your help, okay? I just need you to walk me through what happened. Did somebody attack you? >> Why am I goddamn the victim, man? >> Why am I sitting here? >> Okay, no problem. Stop. Okay, >> sorry. >> The more investigators press, the more Thomas retreats into increasingly bizarre explanations. Eventually, detectives realize the interview is going nowhere and Thomas abruptly stops cooperating altogether. >> Just letting you know what's what's going on. >> Why? >> Okay. You say why or Okay. >> Okay. All right. If you have any questions, you can reach out to me. Just you don't have to. Just let me know that's that's your right. Okay. All right. >> All right. And then you get a copy of the search warrant will go on your property. All right. Um is also construction. But by then, investigators already have what they need. witness statements, physical evidence, prior incidents involving the victims, and surveillance footage connecting him to the scene. In the end, Thomas is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder. After lengthy court proceedings and continued debates regarding his mental competency, a judge ultimately finds him guilty. He receives two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
