But investigators were sharper than they looked and this couple weren't nearly as clever as they thought. >> He says he's >> 40-year-old. At first, they expected it to be just another routine call. Check on the occupant, ensure everyone was safe, and move on. But the moment they arrived, it became clear this was anything but routine. What they discovered inside the home left even the most experienced officers stunned. >> Hi. Daniel was lying lifeless in his garage, his body in the worst state possible. With the scene now secured, detectives and EMS crews began working to piece together exactly what had happened. There were still countless questions surrounding Daniel's death, and investigators had a long road ahead of them. But as they began examining the scene and gathering the first pieces of evidence, disturbing details about the crime slowly started to emerge. >> Okay. >> I walked in the house. >> What's your unit? Like what what >> It's going to be station two. >> It's all two? Okay. >> This is I mean these units are different, these guys, but rescue two arrived first. >> Okay, rescue two. >> All right, stand by for the residence. >> Okay. And this lady was the only lady that was here? >> The only No, there's a gentleman who keeps trying to leave. I said >> Where is he? >> He's over there. Your other officer went to him. He's right there. >> Okay. Okay. >> So, he was here with her. Apparently, they're friends and they live together. And she didn't want to come over here by herself. So, he came with her and so I went into the residence while she opened the garage. That was it. >> Okay. So, is this the only body right here, or is there another one? >> not been upstairs. >> Okay. >> But, if you look at the >> And did it Would you say he's a 16-year-old male? >> I don't think so. >> No. >> She says he's >> 40-year-old? Just write how you got inside and what you saw when you went inside. Okay? In your own words. >> Uh he lives here with his daughter. He's 16, but she's gone. >> Oh, okay. That's the 16-year-old. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, it >> She said she knows him and his mom was worried, so she called to check on him. She said he lives here with his 16-year-old daughter. And they have one car. The car's not here. That's her car. This is her car. >> Okay. >> So, whatever car they own is gone. >> Okay. >> Or does the daughter own it? He's 40. He's got a 16-year-old daughter and that's it. >> Knowing the victim had a daughter, 16-year-old Sierra Halseth, officers immediately made locating her a top priority. At first, they feared she might be in danger herself, but as they began speaking with Daniel's friends and long-time neighbors, the investigation took an unexpected turn. The more they uncovered Daniel's personal life, the more potential suspects began to emerge. >> There was money taken out of his account, $1,400 taken out of his account. Can't get a hold of him for days on end. And it was taken out two different places here in Las Vegas and then they tried to take it out again. >> And then uh she closed the account. So that it couldn't be used again. >> But she's objective. >> Yeah. His mother lives in in um Oregon. >> Okay. >> So and uh >> They're very good family friends. >> Yeah. We're like we're family. >> Like you've known him since >> IT guy and he helps us with all that. >> With everything with all our work and I've helped him out and and all this stuff. >> How many years is >> And um then his ex-wife called me. They've been trying to get him. His mother his uh ex-wife >> Okay. >> the company that he was supposed to go to to work and do IT, it's a law firm. And and they uh they said, "He's not responding. He's never done this before." >> Okay. >> He's always reliable. >> Nicest guy in the world. He's very reliable. >> Okay. Does he live alone? >> No, he lives with his 16-year-old daughter lives with and she's grown. >> Do you know where she's at? >> Not if she's not in the house. >> Oh, I I don't know. >> She's not answering. >> Like I said, I've been I've been right here the whole time so >> She's not answering her cell phone. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> East side residents covered. I guess we're going to be short on people. So do you want to stay here? I'll put her and she can sit in the back. She's a witness. >> That's fine. >> In the back of your car and then I'll go over there. >> Yeah. Yeah, let me let me get my car open and turn the AC on back there. Um how long So how long have you known him for? Basically since he was a baby? >> It's not since he's a baby. >> Uh >> But since he's like I would say it's now 18 years. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> And when was the last time you talked to him? >> I tried to get a hold of him cuz I had a problem on my computer for the last 5 days, but >> So, you haven't been able You haven't talked to him But, when was the last time you talked to him that you remember? >> It's probably uh >> 10 days ago? >> Cuz he was down in uh He had business. Then he came back, and when he came back he said, "Yeah, I have to go back out to >> day? >> My entire life. He said, "I have to go back out to Boston." To uh Boston. Boston. >> Okay. So, it's been about 10 days. Okay. All right. If you want to hang tight in your uh car, like I said, I'll come get you in just a sec. If you think that he did it to himself, or if you think someone else did it. And if you think someone else did it >> himself? Or his daughter did it to him? His ex-wife did it to him? Or somebody else? >> Fair enough. >> As the investigation continued, detectives learned that Daniel's daughter had an 18-year-old boyfriend named Aaron Guerrero. But, there was another troubling development. Both Sierra and Aaron had seemingly vanished without a trace. Sierra's absence was especially alarming. With her father the victim of such a brutal Investigators expected her to be at the scene or reachable. Instead, her disappearance only raised even more unsettling questions. >> He was going through his custody uh uh a battle with his ex-wife who was a senator. >> So, let's Let's start slow for me, okay? Who Who's the the 16-year-old inside? >> 16-year-old inside? >> Who's the person that lives there? >> We thought it was his daughter, but it's it's uh Daniel Daniel Hallstead. Hall Hallstead. Halls >> Do you know how to spell his last name? >> H A L S A I T H >> How old is he? >> Same age. >> What same age as what? >> Uh me and him are same age. Uh 45. >> And he's the He's the guy that lives there? >> Yeah. This is Newman who owns the house, who I've been renting from and known for 10 years. She helped him get the house 6 months ago cuz he he had a place in Texas. Uh guy makes 100 grand a year, man. >> So is Is Daniel the only one that lives there? >> He just flew in. I got He just flew in Wednesday. It's high teens. That's the fourth place. >> You think Daniel killed himself? >> No, that's exactly what drove him nuts. Uh with with custody battle making up stories She sexually attacked his daughter because because his daughter put a couple pictures of her legs, man. Nothing bad. She's 16. Uh on her Instagram. Child Protective Services The daughter and the mother been having weekly counseling. This is just started like >> Okay. >> I'll send you out. I can't tell you [ __ ] >> So Oh, you're fine. So Daniel's the only one that lives there right now, correct? That you're aware of? >> Him and his dog. >> Just him and his dog. So how did Oh, his daughter. I'm sorry. >> 16. So the ex-wife has been giving him a hard time any way she can and making up lies that he's sexually attacking his daughter because of the Instagram pictures. The daughter just told me this like 2 weeks ago. Um >> Based on Daniel's friend's account, the officer began to piece together the strained relationship between Sierra and her father. But Sierra and Daniel were not the only one with a strained relationship. Multiple witnesses had mentioned Daniel's ex-wife, too, and how there was a fight for Sierra's custody between her and Daniel. With the family's troubled dynamics now coming to light, the investigation became more complicated. The officers had uncovered several possible motives and people of interest, but they still couldn't determine who deserved their closest scrutiny. >> So how did you come over here today? Why Why did you come over here today? >> phone. >> Okay. So you were concerned that something might be up, so you just came over to check on him? >> Right. And this is Newman. And Daniel's the type of guy he's on top of everything. He makes 100 grand a year. He's IT tech. She's agreed. Oh my I don't I don't I just can't. How's he? Why would he do that? Oh, he's taking And the daughter, where is she? And this is who we talked to today. >> And you don't know where his daughter is? >> We don't know. I She's been living here since he got the house. And the reason why he got the house is because all of his three children that came over to Mrs. Newman's last last summer um cuz Daniel was stuck at Mrs. Newman's for COVID on the original lockdown. He was living in Texas the past 3 years. He had had a mortgage. Second ex-wife. They were still friends. I don't know, but he was living in Texas. I've met Daniel what? Three, four times? Because every 6, 7 months past 3 and 1/2 years since I've been living there, Daniel's came to the house and just and and did some did some work, IT tech, and then fly back out. So, he's he stayed the night a couple times. And so, yeah. Last time he came over to stay the night a couple nights, um the COVID thing happened. So, he got stuck in the house. That's how we And then he had all three of his children July and at the end 2 weeks or 10 days, whatever, uh two children go home and the youngest one wanted to live with him. And his ex-wife had a connection to him. >> Okay. >> She She's a politician. She divorced him or he divorced her cuz she cheated on him with another politician. I don't Um beautiful woman. So, I thought I thought she she set the fire when me and Mrs. Newman first walked in. I thought she did. And then the key he was in the deadbolt. >> He thought his wife did? >> Yeah. >> Okay. And you said the key was still in the deadbolt? >> It just came to my mind. So that is that is weird. That Daniel killed himself. Cuz he put the key in the deadbolt. You know? And he was like, "Why would he do that?" He told me he flew in. Something with the daughter. Problem with the daughter. And Daniel don't drink. He don't drink. When he drinks a little bit, but he don't get drunk. Cuz I became friends with him. So, A, why would he do that? B, why would somebody kill him? The ex-wife, man, she's giving him the most grief. She's the ex-politician, so And you know, but she got fired from her Senate seat job. And the guy that she's married to, he's a politician, but he lost his past election, something with schools. So. >> Um has has Daniel made any suicide attempts to you before? >> Never. >> So you you would never have guessed that he was suicidal? >> I would never have guessed he was suicidal. >> Then came the breakthrough the officer had been waiting for. Three days later a YouTube video surfaced online showing Sierra and Aaron openly confessing to a murder. The shocking video immediately drew officers' attention and suddenly the couple found themselves at the center of the investigation into Daniel's death. >> Welcome back to our YouTube channel. I'm day three after [laughter] killing somebody. >> Woah! Don't put that on the camera. >> Eventually the truth came to light. Investigators discovered that Sierra and her boyfriend Aaron Guerrero had taken Daniel's life under the claim that he was abusive and had mistreated Sierra. The couple then set Daniel's body on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. After the act the pair fled the state hoping to evade capture. Their time on the run was short-lived. Just four days later authorities tracked them down in Salt Lake City where they were taken into custody without incident. Both were later charged with conspiracy to commit murder with [music] a deadly weapon, first-degree arson, conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery with with deadly weapon, and four counts of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card. In the end, Sierra and Aaron were each sentenced to 22 years in prison.
