On December 10th, 2024, officers from the Boca Raton Police Department received a call reporting that a group of shoplifters was concealing items in a large bag inside Saks Fifth Avenue and attempting to [music] flee. Upon arriving at the scene, an officer encountered one of the suspects and immediately gave chase, leaving him with no room to escape. Get on the ground. Get on the ground. I got one detained. Hey, the other one ran behind the building. Over there by this building. Same thing, white shirt, same description. Watch your cut back that way. He's inside of the building. You left it on you? I didn't see him. I didn't see him. I didn't Same description. Do you got an ID, bro? Do you got an ID? English? The man seen here was later identified as 22-year-old Oscar Antonio De La Cruz Capote. He wasn't acting alone, but when officers attempted to approach the suspects, the group suddenly split up, forcing police to divide their attention. One of them managed to get away, but Oscar didn't make it far. Okay, one more outstanding, same description, somewhere on the back side of this building. He's saying it's just two. According to Oscar, he said he was running because someone was chasing him, conveniently omitting the fact that he was being pursued for stealing. He also failed to mention that the stolen merchandise was substantial, totaling nearly $6,000 in high-end men's clothing. As the investigation unfolded, additional officers located and detained Oscar's accomplice, leaving both shoplifters in custody. >> [clears throat] >> Let me just Yeah, I know. In the parking lot? Or where in the parking lot? Which way is it? That's important. Okay. There's three, yeah. Oscar claimed he had no idea which model of car was waiting for them. Yet, he admitted he knew where it and the driver were. He tried to play innocent, but the officers weren't buying his story. While the officer stayed with Oscar, another officer went to speak with the witnesses and their account didn't match Oscar's version at all. So, So, do you work with black guy? Black guy you work works for Saks. He'll be He's someone that Okay. He's got a long beard. Cuz he called me and said he wanted us to do a show up. Yeah. Yeah. So, So, whatever you need me to do. So, just a show up probably, but you got to get with the guy who saw it. He works for Saks. Okay. Okay. He's got a long beard, black guy. Okay. Um he's all He knows he's in the security room, probably back there. I'm sure I can figure it out. He said, "Hey, Saks Fifth Security, we see two people came in with birthday bags and they're in here for like 10 seconds, grabbed and ran out. Um this is the sales receipt for the incident. Okay. >> So, it's obviously a felony. It's over $6,000. >> Wow. And then, yeah, so he's probably in there to do a show up. Um I make sure it wasn't one of you guys calling me. All right, sir, can you tell me what happened today? So, we seen two persons of interest into our store today through our contemporary department carrying a red with the same color shopping bag. We were determined that it was a Dana Buchman bag because we dealt with this crew maybe a month ago. Okay. >> They proceeded to the men's department where they quickly selected three, six, nine pieces of men's Amiri, which is a high designer brand. They rolled it up working in concert together, stuffed inside the bag and then proceeded to exit the building via the contemporary doors again. Uh myself and API Jean Moranga chased after them. They dropped the bag in the middle of the parking lot and fled away from us but was shortly apprehended by local PD. Okay. Uh were there any Did they defeat Were there any um security tags or anything like that? Did they defeat >> didn't defeat any security tags. They had a booster bag that kind of concealed the security tags inside the bag so it wouldn't go off in the store. Okay. So they So the bag would roll off The bags were lined that which defeated the the anti-theft items. All right. And um were So they passed all [music] points of sale >> all points of sale. Um again, they dropped the bag in the middle of the parking lot which is how we recovered the bag and which is good. And all the merchandise [music] was recovered? 100%. Okay. That day, the group had put together an entire scheme to steal the clothing. According to the report, the bag they were using had an aluminum lined interior designed to block security sensors and allow them to pass points of sale without being detected. Although they had carefully planned the theft, the scheme ultimately failed and there was nowhere left for them to go. Could be you can't I don't know. He's not able to tell me. As the investigation continued and Oscar was taken to the police station, officers discovered narcotics in his possession which explained why he had insisted that the bag only contained pills. In the end, he was charged with grand theft, coordinating with others, retail theft involving the use or possession of an anti-shoplifting device, resisting [music] an officer without violence, and possession of narcotics.
