Who's all in the house? >> Me, and my baby and friend. >> You the landlord? Are you the landlord? Huh? Are you the landlord? >> Yes. >> Yeah, he's the landlord. >> Officers had just responded to a stabbing. A landlord who had turned on his own tenants, not because of anything they had done, but because of the religion they practiced. What officers found inside that home would become one of the most disturbing scenes any of them had ever walked into. >> Holy Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. >> On October 14th, 2023, officers with the Plainfield Police Department were dispatched to a residence on South Lincoln Highway, a quiet suburb just outside Chicago, after a 911 call came in from a woman locked inside a bathroom. On that call, a distressed woman could be heard claiming that she and her 6-year-old son were being attacked by their own landlord. Upon arriving at the scene, officers approached the front door completely unaware of the horrifying scene they were about to walk into. >> Sheriff's Department! You go right. Will County Sheriff's Department! Right here! Got him down there? Quick! Who's here? Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. Go that way. Go that way. Now! Ma'am, I need you out. This way. >> Upon entering the home, officers were met by Hanan Shaheen, the woman behind that 911 call. Covered in blood, barely able to speak, officers tried to keep their composure as the suspect had not yet been located. Even through the shock and the pain, Hanan managed to give officers critical information. The man who had done this wasn't a stranger. He was the same man whose roof she and her son had lived under for 2 years. >> Who's all in the house? >> Me and my baby and him. >> Okay, just three of you? >> And Jamali, he's the landlord. >> Okay. Okay. I don't know. Come on, man. >> All right, man. >> Anything lower on your legs or feet? Do you want to stay in with this guy? What's your first name, miss? What is it? >> Hanan. >> Spell that. >> H A N A N. >> Okay. What's your middle initial? >> A. >> And what's your last name? >> S H A A H E E N. >> S H >> A A H E E N. >> What's your date of birth, miss? >> March 8th, 1991. >> Was that your husband or who was that to you? >> the landlord of the home. We're going to see how many total >> Meanwhile, back inside the house, officers were about to make the most cruel discovery they had encountered in a long time. >> Back door, search, please. Back door, search. >> Rigo, Rigo, Rigo, Rigo. Rigo, Rigo, Rigo. Holy Got one. >> Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. >> Yeah? >> Yes. >> Police. >> Hold on. >> Two, we got one. Fire. with a >> Hold on. All right, man. Back up. >> Yeah. >> Got one. >> No. >> Nothing in the back of the counter. I got nothing in the back. >> Okay, we need to open We need to open this up for FD now. Now. Now. Rigo, can you help me open this up? >> Move this up. >> Now. Now. Now. Now. This way. This way. Hot. They're in back. >> Deeper inside the home, officers found 6-year-old Wady, Hanan's son, a boy who loved sports and Legos, had been stabbed 26 times, and the knife was still in his body. >> Body young child. Come here. >> Right here. Where do you need to go? >> Yeah, what what do you need? What do you need? >> Get off. We're just leaving. >> Okay. >> I don't feel one. >> I don't feel one. Come on. Say something. >> What? No pulse? >> No pulse. >> Excuse me, just clear the Okay. >> Hey, boy. Where are we at? >> That's my house. >> Hey, Tyler. >> Yeah. >> Does Jack want the helicopter? Jack, are you back here? >> Yeah, he's right here doing the CPR. >> Helicopter? >> No. >> No helicopter. >> Backboard. You guys want to just Just throw him on the backboard and go. >> Back of the door. >> We need to stabilize with a backboard. >> I think we should just go lay down. >> And now that you have him on the backboard, you can work on him. >> That's a 6-year-old. 6-year-old male. >> I can't give you a name. >> Give me a BVM. >> Let's Let's move. Let's move. >> Here, I got you. I got you. What you got? Yep. Where is it at? I'll get it. Where's it at? >> Uh in the back. >> With a mother who had survived the worst and a child unalive on the bed, one question hung over every officer on that scene. Where was the man who did this? They eventually located him, and the visible signs of the horrific act he had carried out just moments earlier were all over him. >> Hey, I got I got someone in the back. Outside, outside. I got someone out back. Yeah. That's him. >> Can you talk? >> Yes. >> Tell me what happened. I got him. You stay right there, you understand? Who else is in the uh house? Is it just you? And who else? Stay right there, understand? Okay, well let's get him in cuffs. Get him in cuffs. Stay right there. You the landlord? >> Are you the landlord? Huh? Are you the landlord? >> Yes. >> Yeah, he's the landlord. >> Joseph Chuba, the 73-year-old landlord, was found sitting outside on the ground, appearing calm and not trying to make a scene, as if he already knew that his fate was sealed. Officers now had their suspect, who they were determined to get a bunch of information from to understand the motive behind this brutal attack. >> Uh there's kids in there right now. Yeah, there's kids in there right now. >> You neighbor? I need to get inside, real quick. Go. All right, we're going to have to move him into uh You guys got to get up. You got any weapons on you? Nothing on you? I'm moving him, all right? We got a We got pocket knives over here. >> Hang on. Hang on. >> All right. >> Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. >> Nothing on you? He's back. >> Sleeping there, all right? >> Yeah, I'm just checking his pockets. >> Cinder? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> To understand how this happened, one has to understand who Chuba was before everything changed. Hanan and Waddy, a Palestinian-American mother and her young son, had lived under his roof for nearly 2 years without a single issue. They shared a kitchen, a living room, a home. Waddy even looked up to him like a grandfather. Then one day, driven purely by hatred toward their faith and roots, Chuba told Hanan she and her son were no longer welcome. She urged him to talk it out. He came back with a knife instead. The case shook the entire nation. Thousands attended Waddy's funeral. Plainfield dedicated a park in his honor, and Hanan eventually sat down with then President Biden at the White House, making sure the world never forgot her son. Back at the scene, officers ensured no other occupants were in the house before eventually getting ready to transport Joseph. >> Okay, coming out? >> Yeah, good. >> Coming out. >> Coming out. Come here. Coming down. About 6 inches. >> I knew it was a hit and run driver. >> There's two other floors. >> Look look up, sir. How old are you, sir? >> 43 72 >> All right. >> Come around this way here. >> Yep. >> Where do you stand? Yep. Ready? 1 2 3 Okay. >> All right, turn around. You can walk right over to the spot over here, okay? >> Got it. >> I'd say two I saw, maybe three. Did you see three? >> Uh He's got I think there's at least three out of his head. I did a quick little feel around. Ready? Lift your legs up. >> All we got is 43. Back there. He'll be all right. >> He's giving his information. >> We have no idea on him. He's got a gun on him. You guys know who he is now? >> What's that? >> Do you guys have information on him? >> Yeah. Yeah, my sergeant does. He's the one walking with the phone. >> Oh, yeah. >> I'll I'll follow you guys though. >> Going to Brook? >> Yeah. >> In the weeks that followed, Joseph Czuba was formally charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, and hate crimes. He was found guilty on every single count. The jury took less than 2 hours to reach its verdict, and he was subsequently sentenced to 53 years in prison, a sentence that made it certain he would die behind bars, and he did. Chuba passed away in prison just months after his sentencing, having served only a fraction of his time. But for Wadey's father, none of it brought any comfort. He said the only justice he ever wanted was his son back, and no verdict, no sentence, and no behind bars could ever give him that.
