I'm here because I just my wife. >> You just your wife? >> My wife and her husband. >> This is 48-year-old Sony Joath and he has just approached officers with a chilling confession on his lips. One that would tear his family apart forever. >> My mom got on my dad. >> My mom had a fake heartbeat. I don't know. She probably now. >> However, Sony fueled by jealousy after his wife left him for what he considered his enemy, seemed to have no regret about what he had done, making the entire situation even more sickening. I walk out with the divorce empty hand, nothing. She had everything. You got divorced. One month later, you decide to marry a guy. That relationship was there and together. Yeah. And I started. >> Who did you do first? >> I the guy first. >> On the morning of December 9th, 2023, deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office received multiple calls from a neighborhood reporting shots fired. With no exact address to go on, they were dispatched into the area searching for where it had happened and what exactly they were walking into. >> Pam, you heard it from over there. Yes. >> Yes. But what where did you hear the from? >> We went to check the mail in there and we heard the and there's a gentleman there. He came in to ask us if we were okay. >> So you heard the over here? >> Yes. In that clubhouse. >> She said she heard it out of the She said she heard it out of the clubhouse. She said she heard it from the clubhouse. >> She said she heard it come from the clubhouse. >> Let me see your hand. >> What are we looking for? >> Where'd you hear it from? Where? Hey, watch out for the tree. >> Come here. Go. >> Down there. >> Right here. H. Where's the house? >> Is that a door open? >> No. Doors open in the back of the house. >> Did he take off on foot or? >> No. No. He took off on a car. >> Okay. >> He was over in that clubhouse. >> Uhhuh. >> Right. >> Then he got into an SUV and he took off like a bat out of hell. >> Uh >> where's where's the house? >> Oh, over there. There's a lady down. >> Okay. There's people inside. Come outside. >> Come outside. >> It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. I know. I know. It's okay. Come here. It's okay. >> Just come past them. Okay. It's okay. >> Come here. Come here. Come here. I know. I know. I know. >> Come here. Come here. >> It's okay. Come on. >> Security sweep. Going to check the house for other victims. 97. >> We will. >> Okay. >> It is a death penalty. >> Hey, who was that? Who shot him? >> What's your dad's name? >> What's your dad's [laughter] name? Come on, help us out. >> Son Joseph Alpha 23. The suspect can be Sony Joseph. >> Joseph Fat. >> Greeting the officers was one of the victim's oldest daughters who was quick to identify the suspect, her own father and the victim's ex-husband, Sony Joseph. Inside the residence, officers found two victims, a woman in her 40s and her husband whom she had married just a week earlier. Thrown into the chaos, officers worked to keep their composure and secure the scene, all while piecing together what had led to the killings. >> You know the guy, >> do you know where he normally hangs out? >> That's his dad. Her dad. >> Dad. That's your dad. >> What does that hang out at? The stepdad and mom address. >> Hey, that's their real dad. >> I have this address, >> huh? >> Whose address is that? >> My dad. >> Daddy's address. >> Go arrest him. Go. >> Who's that? >> Stop calling people right now. Stop calling people now. Right now is not the time. All right. You got your family here. You got your brother. You got your sister. >> Your name is Where's the ambulance? [crying] The ambulance over there. Is my dad arrested? >> They're working on that. They're working on that. She fled. They're working. >> I like to add another charge to that when I have a chance. >> All right. We'll talk to you after. Let's just figure this out first. We have a lot more going on right now. >> Just watch the scene here. Make sure we don't get anybody in here. All right. >> Check the back. >> Yeah, they checked. Everybody checked the back. So, he has an address for dad. Dad doesn't live here. Dad lives off of Monoy Farms in apartment 204. >> Okay. >> So, I'm I sent Eagle to the address just to do a fly over to see if Okay. >> Maybe he sees a car in the in the thing. >> Sony's daughters described their dad as controlling throughout their childhood, saying it was the very reason their mother ended the marriage. But despite everything they had experienced, they never imagined he would take things this far. >> They're going to take him to a hospital. I don't know if they're My mom had a My mom had a fake heartbeat. I don't know. She's probably dead now. I want to be so slow. >> They're supposed to be first responders. Where's the first responder? >> Yes. And we're here. >> No. >> Quick question for you. Did you hear everything that happened? >> Yes. I So, I want you I want you to take a second. We got detectives rushing over here to get all your information to get the ambulance. They need the ambulance. All right. >> Why is there the ambulance? >> Let me let me check real quick. How far away? >> Can you check if they're alive? Something. >> Give me a second. Okay. >> Can you check if they're alive? >> Just stay out of the sun, please. >> Can you check if they're alive? >> Can you check if they're alive? >> We don't know. We don't know. >> Can you check if they're alive? >> Okay, hun. I can't leave right now. Just give him a second. He's He said he's getting some information for you. Okay. Can you can somebody check their lives, please? >> To better understand how the tragedy unfolded, officers began interviewing witnesses. A man who was just passing by and happened to witness the incident and a neighbor of Sony's ex-wife who held nothing back as they recounted Sony's chilling actions. >> What happened was is that I came in to check my mail. >> Yep. >> Okay. There was no mail. >> Gotcha. >> But as I'm coming out, I hear like pop and then it stopped for a second. I heard pop pop again. So I went inside. There was a a lady and a and her and her daughter and I just wanted to make >> inside here. >> Inside here. >> She heard it too. >> Okay. >> And so I wanted to make sure they were safe. So I told him to come back and stay in cuz I didn't know what it was. >> Okay. And then what? >> And then I we looked out the window >> and we saw a uh I don't know if he was African-American or Haitian. >> Okay. >> He was my black male. Black would be safe to say. Okay. >> Yeah. Either gray, dark gray or black shirt with blue jean. He came right through here. >> So he cut through this parking lot, >> right? He cut through there, went on this side of the >> hedges. >> Oh, no, no, no. On this side of that car right there. >> Okay. >> And then he crossed the street. >> Yep. >> Ran over that way. >> Okay. >> And the lady was telling me that he parked his SUV way over there. >> Okay. But did you see him get into an SUV? >> Yeah, it looked like an SUV because I heard it peeling out. >> Okay. But but did you see it? Did you? >> No, I didn't see him. But there was two construction workers over there. >> Okay. All right. We'll go talk to them. >> They're not there now, but >> Okay. Just like I said, just hang out for a few more minutes. I'm going to go get my car. I'm going to talk to these deputies here and you're most likely going to be interviewed by a detective. Okay, >> that's fine. But by the way, just to give you a heads up. >> If that clubhouse is like this clubhouse, >> should be cameras. >> There should be cameras. >> Gotcha. >> Okay. So, you talked to Sergeant Franks and said that you have video. You heard the >> Yeah. >> Okay. Let's start from there. Were you outside or inside? >> No, I was inside talking to my husband. >> Okay. >> They kept going on. You know, they were like loud firecrackers. [laughter] >> Okay. And I said, "Carlos, those that's not firecrackers. Those are and they're too close." I just came out. >> You came outside? >> Yeah. Opened up the door a little bit >> and then I saw that young man leaving, you know, and like putting his gun away. I don't remember whether it was the front or the back, but I remember it was a big black fat piece. I don't know anything about guns. Then I saw the ring where he went through, you know, he went around the house in the back. I walked over there because there was a kid out here. This family just moved in maybe a month ago and I never even saw the old family leave. This is the thing. Okay. So, I thought that that was him because I've seen like an 11 or 12year-old. You know, these kids are big nowadays. My my my grandson's 11 and and he's almost 6 feet tall. And I asked him, "Are you okay? Do you live here?" I I don't know something to the point of that. A young boy maybe 12 or 13 or 14. He had blue pajamas on. >> Okay. >> Did you see him? >> Yes. >> Okay. I think I asked are they okay? You know, did he go in? Did he? because he was out here, you know. And then he said, "No." But he didn't tell me what was there, you know. You know, I went to yell at her. I said, "Help. It's coming." You know, cuz I could hear her screams. >> Who was screaming? >> A young girl. >> Okay. >> When I went to go scream that I saw two people laying there and I felt really bad. I I didn't know whether to go check on them and see whether they were okay and give them, you know, I felt really bad. >> How far did you go? >> To where the end of the car is right there. >> Okay. So, you didn't go up over to them? No. >> However, in an unexpected turn of events, Sony returned to the scene of the crime, appearing unsteady on his feet. His decision to come back caught the officers completely offg guard. But what stunned them even more was the reason he had come back. Something none of them expected. >> So, why are you here? >> I'm here because I just I just My wife. >> You just Your wife. >> My wife and and her husband. >> Your wife and her husband. >> And her husband. Yes. >> Turn around. Turn around for me. You speak Creole or speak English better? I speak Creole. I speak I speak both, but I'm Haitian. >> Have a seat right here. Did you call anybody? >> No, I don't call anybody. I just drive. >> Where do you live? >> Summit Boulevard. >> I'm out with a black male. Just advised that he [music] his wife. I'm going lift you up. Okay. I'm going put you in my back seat of my vehicle. >> No, I have not. >> He's advising that the gun is in the vehicle. >> Okay, that's fine. >> So, we're just going to transfer you over to my office and then we'll sit down and I'll kind of explain some things and we'll have a good talk. Okay. >> No problem. >> All right. The officers transported him to the station where detectives began interrogating him, determined to uncover what had driven him to commit such a brutal and senseless act. >> What happened? I've been with my wife for 28 years. We were together since we were babies. So, I'm 46 years old, bold. If we have been together for 28 years, you can imagine how long we've been together. We spend our life together. But, uh, the relationship, we had family issue in the relationship. We buy that house together. We have been working hard so hard together to to get our life together. Um we to a point where we had family issues. We separated for a little bit. And then he sent me he sent me a divorce paper. But uh in the meantime I was trying to see if we can get back together because I said we have kids. I understand that we have issue. I have my problem. We have your problem. But let's sit to see how how can we fix things, >> you know, to keep living our life. She did not want that. So she had a very strong lawyer and then we got to a point where we had to split everything 50/50. The only thing I heard 1 month after the divorce get finized she's going to get married. She got married last Saturday and then as a matter of fact not only she got married she's moving with her husband in the house that we buy for the kids. But if she wanted to talk to me I was going to tell her listen we spend our life together. We work so hard together. I work out with the divorce empty hand. Nothing. She had everything. Well, she get everything. I walk out with a but empty hand. I said I'm not a problem, but I have three kids with you. If you're happy, my kids going to be happy. I don't have any problem with that. I know what I did is wrong. I know it is. But I was fighting with it. I'm not a bad guy. If you want me, we're not going to see. I never invol you know. I never touch a gun whatsoever. >> You've been nothing but respectful to me. And you seem like a nice person. >> Yeah. If she wanted to talk to me about that situation, I was going to tell her, listen, you're free to get married. No problem. But remember, I decided to leave that house for my kids, not for you and your husband to live in. This is so disrespectful. You cannot do that. I did not want to do that. Truly, I get to a point where I could not get it because first of all, she's going to live in the house with my two kids. I don't know who that guy is whatsoever. I never heard about that guy. What crossing my mind, you got divorced. One month later, you decide to marry a guy. That relationship is was there. >> It was there when you guys were there. >> You understand what I mean? >> Absolutely. >> That relationship was there. Nobody going to meet the guy to somebody today you get married to tomorrow. >> Could you just walk me through today? >> Since I heard that situation, I never sleep. I can't. You throw me like a piece of trash after 28 years together for someone we just meet. You don't even know who that guy is. First of all, I went there to took my kids to breakfast. I call my daughter, the second one, and then tell her, "Hey, I want to take you to to breakfast this morning." Blah, blah, blah. And then I say, "Okay, but I don't see your car. Maybe your mom has your car." And then I and then I left and I said, "Okay, I'm coming back so to see if I can take you guys." That was the idea. Take them to breakfast. But honestly, I had my gun on me. She has a a man. I don't know who that man is. >> As Sony recounted the events, it became increasingly clear to the officer that he was a man consumed by a need to control his ex-wife. His obsessive fixation had clouded his judgment, driving him to act irrationally and ultimately setting in motion a tragedy that could never be undone. When I went there this morning to take my kids, I see her and her husband standing for the house try to set a camera, you know, and then that happened. I'm sorry for it. It's not It's not good whatsoever. I should not do that. But >> I I'd say the biggest thing is that you understand, you know, it's it's a bad thing that you did. >> It is so bad. >> Um it's not like you took enjoyment out of that, right? You didn't enjoy doing that or >> No, I never do something like that before. How come can you enjoy something that you never did? >> I know, but you know, there's >> Yeah, exactly. Walk me through what steps do you take? Do you take it out of the case? Do you hold it? You put it in your pocket? >> Yes, I take it out of the case >> and then I put the magazine in and then I put it right there. >> Okay. Did you like you know how you >> tap and rack? Yeah. >> Okay. You do that and then you put it in your front. >> Yeah. I did I do that when when I see them I'm >> Okay. And then what do you do? >> And then I them. >> So [clears throat] when you're walking up, do you say anything to them? >> I just say good morning. >> Did they say stuff back to you? >> They just say good morning back to me. I look at him. I said good morning and then everything got back to my head. >> So [clears throat] you take it out. >> I took it out. Yeah. And I started shooting. >> Who did you first? >> I the guy first. Yeah. >> Do you remember where you >> things like this? Sometimes you don't really remember. I start shooting. >> Do you remember like a like a general area of his body? Was it his legs? His midsection. His chest. >> Midsection and head too. Yeah. >> Midsection and head. >> Yeah. >> You shoot him then you you shoot her. Do you remember where you shot her? >> I don't remember exactly. I don't remember. But you you remember >> Yeah. Yeah. I I should both because they both out >> and she didn't say anything. >> No, I think they >> Yeah, >> I think so. Yeah, >> they are. So, what do you do next? Do you stay there long? >> No, no, no. I just went to my car. >> Did you ever touch him or your wife? Did you have any physical? >> There was no physical. I just run to my to my car and then I take myself straight to to to gun club. >> Gun club. >> To jail. Yeah. >> You met an officer there? >> Yes. What did you say to her >> when I approached her? I said uh I just my wife and her husband. So >> has anyone any associates of you ever um told you that to spy on her or to do any type of you know like covert surveillance or anything on her? Did you ever do any spying on her? You know, like set up across the street with binocular. Anybody ever influence you to do that or recommend doing that? >> Um have you did did you do anything like that prior to today? Although Sony insisted he had never been spying on his ex-wife, the detective's years of experience made the claim difficult to believe. Based on everything he had seen and heard, the detective strongly suspected there was far more to the story than Sony was willing to admit. >> Did you call somebody after you left? >> My pastor. >> What' you tell him? >> I said, "I'm sorry for what I just did. I know it's not it's not good. I shouldn't do that, but I was fighting with it. Try not to do it, but I end up do it." >> After you left, did you put it like back in your waistband? >> Yeah. >> On your way to the sheriff's office, did you inspect it? Did you remove any of the bullets out of the gun or anything like that? >> It was empty. There was no >> Oh, it was completely empty. >> There was no more. No more. >> Was it full? Besides you, who would know best of what you're going through? Like a friend of yours that I could talk to. Who would know most? Who's your best friend that >> I can't say everybody's in business? I talk to everybody. How long I'm going to be in in prison? >> That's on down the road. It could vary. Uh you could be spending your rest of your life in prison. You understand that, right? When you do something like that, you know, two people >> Yeah. >> have lost their lives. Your daughters have lost their mother and father. >> Yeah. >> Gone just like that. >> Yeah. >> In a matter of seconds. So, it's a tragedy. Okay. It's just unfortunate. You seem like a nice guy. You're in the academy. I wish that maybe you could have talked to somebody about your anger instead of letting it take over you today, which it did. It's very unfortunate cuz like I said, you've now just thrown your life away. >> Yeah. >> And your children will never be the same ever again. >> Yeah. >> Especially if they witnessed it, right? >> Tragically, Sony's ex-wife and her new husband did not survive the attack. Both had succumbed to their injuries before emergency medical personnel could arrive. In the end, a jury found Sony guilty on two counts of first murder with a firearm, [music] and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
