[music] On October 17th, 2022, officers from the Cook County Sheriff's Office received a desperate call from a woman reporting she had just discovered her deceased nephew inside her sister's home. Upon arriving, officers were confronted with a scene of unimaginable tragedy. Is there anybody else in the house? It's When we got here, it was just Earl and I. Nobody else is in the house? Do you all have ID? Yeah. Nobody else is in the house? No, just No, just Earl and that little No, Mom's not here yet. They got here pretty quick. That's okay. If you got to go in for it, that's okay. Upon entering the room, officers discovered the lifeless body of 19-month-old Nathan lying in his crib. Nathan was unresponsive, malnourished, covered in vomit and feces, [music] and had been left without clothing. The harrowing scene immediately pointed to severe mistreatment and was quickly ruled to be a criminal death. However, officers had found no sign of the mother, 22-year-old Jamie Hanyan, at the scene. A troubling absence that left investigators struggling to piece together what Nathan had endured before help ever came. Mom's not here. The tiny boy's body told a story that words had yet to capture. He weighed just 4.3 kg at the time, only 3 lb more than when he was born, and well below the normal range of 9 to 14 kg. Yet, when investigating the house, officers found plenty of food to nourish the family, including the child, and the several cats inside the house were healthy and well-fed. The case stood as a grim testament to the mother's carelessness, culminating in a tragedy that claimed Nathan's young life. When we found him, this pillow was parallel or perpendicular to the back here. He was where his head was here, like left lateral lying, and then covered in stool and urine. I didn't let nobody in. >> [snorts] >> I haven't been able to ID anybody outside yet. All right, go ahead and start the Who was in here at the when you got here? Um the two They said the two girls. Those two the two ladies. And the guy who came later. She's saying her ID is in here, so I'm just going to have to take her name. At this point, the officer began questioning the witness, trying to piece together the events of the day and locate Jamie. According to Jamie's sister, Jamie had left for work that morning and asked her to check on the baby, and that was when the 19-year-old discovered Nathan deceased. Every second now mattered, and officers moved swiftly to find Jamie. Is mom here? She's on her way. What's mom? Who Who you were here, right? What What's the mom's What's uh your sister's name? '21. '21, sorry. The witnesses, Jamie's mother and sister, were deeply disturbed by the scene they encountered, never imagining that Jamie would leave Nathan in such a state. According to her sister, she was responsible for caring for Nathan on specific days of the week. She had last seen him alive on Friday, and when she returned on Monday to care for him, the boy was found deceased. Later investigations confirmed that Nathan had spent the majority of his life in that wooden crib. Investigators also determined that Jamie had failed to provide proper care and nourishment for the child. '17. All right. Who do we have here? Aunt, friend, grandma. All right. Can you give me that phone number real quick? Okay. So, the one I got here for the grandmother is totally wrong. Right. Aunt and friend are there. And then, she usually baby-sits for her sister on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. And then, my sister went to work. And she wasn't here on the weekends. As the investigation progressed and authorities searched for Jamie, they eventually learned she was in Tennessee visiting family. An arrest warrant was issued and on March 7th, 2023, she was taken into custody by the FBI Fugitive Task Force. But it was only after her arrest during interrogation that the full picture of the nightmare Nathan had been enduring inside the house began to emerge. During questioning, Jamie admitted she had no motivation to feed Nathan or properly care for him, claiming that most days she simply didn't feel like getting up, so she never went to check on him. She also confessed that she heard Nathan crying on Saturday, but did not check on him once over the entire weekend. The prolonged mistreatment Nathan had endured ultimately led to consequences Jamie would never be able to escape and in the end, she was charged with first-degree murder.
