You already know what I'm going to do. >> All right. Turn around and face the other way. >> All right. >> Put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest for impersonating law enforcement, all right? >> I'm glad you came over here and told us cuz that sealed the deal. >> Uh-huh. >> Cuz we were going to let him go. >> A 19-year-old dressed like a deputy with a vest stating sheriff on his chest and duty-style belt around his waist, the officers had questions. What they did not have yet was a reason to arrest him. That changed the moment a stranger appeared. But show you how we got there. >> So, why are you wearing the vest? >> Well, like I said, I drove from all the way from Tennessee. But I'm not going to I'm not going to have people call me when I don't even live in this damn state. >> Okay. >> It's going to piss me off. >> You're You're a deputy sheriff? >> I Well, I mean, I work at the sheriff's office. >> Okay. >> mean, what >> Are you a corrections officer for the sheriff's office? Okay. Why do you wear a vest outside of the facility? >> You know, I'm not a >> Is this a agency vehicle or is this your personal vehicle? >> This is my Kia. >> Okay. It's just a little odd cuz whenever I worked in the jail, I took my crap off, especially if I was taking a long drive from Tennessee. Well, >> I'm going to tell you guys the same thing. I have been pulled over so many times in Tennessee and Arkansas, okay? They know I I have told them every single time. >> That might be true, but it's just a little odd. >> I've been pulled over too wearing this stuff. I mean, like it it Every time I come up here, I mean, like they don't All they say is it's just odd. I never see it. I was like, well, I mean, like well, guess what? I like wearing it. Just like in Tennessee, I've got pulled over for it. Guess what? >> Yeah, I'm not saying it's against the law or anything. It's just >> And I've even had it taken off and I've had it sit right here before and they're like and I get I get yelled at for it. They're like, well, it's kind of weird that you got your belt and your vest >> Jones had an explanation ready for all of it. To him, this was no different from any other stop he'd been through before or was it? >> It's all thing of mine, I mean, >> Well, so my only deal is when you wear >> It's Campbell County. >> There you go. >> Yeah. >> Are you commissioned to carry a gun? >> I I I no, I'm not even >> You're not? Okay. >> even have a gun on me. >> Well, you realize wearing the sheriff on your chest is basically impersonating law enforcement whether or not you're carrying a gun. >> Jones may not have been carrying a gun, but he was still wearing something that made him look like law enforcement. That is where it stops being questionable clothing and starts looking like an impersonation. >> Okay, but are you commissioned to be carrying a gun and do you have arrest powers? >> I I don't. What do you mean? I don't even have a gun on >> That's beside the fact you're wearing a patch that says sheriff. >> Okay. I I >> That's impersonating law enforcement. >> For every concern the deputy raised, Jones had a reason why it was not his fault. Before we move forward, subscribe to Case Point if you're into body cam footage where the uniform doesn't end the conversation. It starts the accountability. All set? Great, let's jump back in. >> But there's proof right there. But like I told him, I just want to take it off. I'll take it off. >> That's fine. I'd much rather you just take the sheriff patch off. >> I mean, I can do that. >> Cuz if you're if you're not commissioned to be a sheriff deputy or a police officer I am a deputy sheriff, yes. >> But do you I'm trying to be nice to you. I'm trying to be nice to you. I don't understand why you got called. >> Right. But if you walk around with a vest carrier on with sheriff on your chest and you're not sheriff you may work for the sheriff's office, but you work in a jail and you're not commissioned outside of the jail to carry a gun or have any arrest powers. >> Okay, I understand. I'm not trying to cause any problems. >> Okay. Does your command at where you work at know that you go around in the public with the vest on with sheriff on your chest? >> I mean, they they they they know about it. >> But you wear it anyways? >> Well, I'm tired, and I just wanted to go to bed. >> You wear it to drive all the way from Tennessee to Choctaw, Oklahoma? Right. Either way. >> I'm not talking about the I've not had this happen to me before. I've got pulled over before for this, and they've let me go. They just told me not to wear it. >> Okay. >> I mean, I mean, like >> My biggest issue is the sheriff. >> That is what made the excuse difficult to accept. This was not a quick walk to the parking lot after work. It was a long public drive through another state wearing gear most people would read as authority. At some point, common sense has to kick in, but in Jones's case, it never did. >> It's not a good interaction for us to know you that you're wearing your stuff outside of work. >> I know that. >> Especially if you're trying to get involved. >> I'm up here with my mom so I can be a cop up here cuz she lives up here, and I'm trying to I'm trying to I'm trying to be a cop, but >> And you're 19? >> Yeah, I'm 19, but they won't let me be a they they don't I've already put an application in, but I still got residence down in Tennessee, obviously. >> Right. >> I got address down there. >> So, what where are you going in Oklahoma City for? >> Huh? >> What are you headed to Oklahoma City for? >> I'm going to 122 Northwest Street. >> What are you What are you doing? >> Apartment. >> Apartment? Do you live there? >> No, my mom does. >> Okay. I was just curious. >> mean, I'm I'm not trying to cause any trouble, man. >> Okay. >> I mean, like I told him, I I just I'm just trying to move up here, hopefully if I can. I ain't got the money right now. I'm just trying to come see her for New Year, man. That's it. Right. >> Jones kept pointing to the same excuse other officers had seen it before and let it go. But getting away with something before is not the same as having permission now, and that was the issue. Jones was treating past luck like proof that what he was doing was okay. >> And you don't have a gun with you or anything like that? I can search the car? I mean, is that what you said? >> You asked me if I had a gun. I mean, I don't have a gun. so I'm >> I was just asking if you had a gun on you. You said you didn't have a gun, I can search the car. >> I don't have >> You don't mind if I search the car? >> I don't think so. >> Okay, cool. Step on out if you don't mind. You dropped your cord there. All right, face the vehicle. I'll check you for make sure you don't have any guns or nothing. Okay. All right, if you wouldn't That's fine. If you wouldn't mind, go ahead and take the vest off and just set it in the car. So, do you wear this vest carrier on duty? In the jail? >> I mean, like I can. I usually wear it under my work shirt. >> Okay. >> What vehicle was it that you stopped and talked to? >> I didn't stop at any vehicle. >> No, I mean, you said that you stopped and talked to somebody. >> to It was some It was some truck, but then he was out of the parking lot. >> Okay. >> But, all I did is literally I went up to >> Let's go get the vest off for me. And the only reason I'm having you take it off is so I don't have to worry about the knives or anything you might have on you. That's fine. I mean, I've I've seen a lot worse. All right, if you'll just go sit on the curb up there. Yeah, that's fine. >> Like I said, I'm not trying to have no problem. Okay. We'll just check everything out and everything's good then we'll we'll go on. >> The casual conversation from a few minutes earlier was completely gone. They had consent and they were going to use it. >> Okay, so RP says he didn't actually see anybody and stop and talk to anybody like he just he was sitting he was parked five inches from a parking spot. He seen a kid walking around the parking lot a little bit. Um looked over at him. They kind of made eye contact with him and he started kind of giggling cuz the way he was acting. He looked inside of his car like he was looking for something then got in >> The couple of first three county troopers. >> then got out and came over to his truck and was like, "What what's so funny? What are you doing?" And he was you know, just being kind of an ass. >> Right. >> And then goes, "Well, I was making a traffic stop and you're over here doing da da da." He doesn't actually see anybody. He didn't see any any interaction between you and him. >> I'm at the intersection of 21st and Westminster on a Edward Bryan >> in it. >> Charles 348 >> One empty bottle, one partially missing bottle and then two more to go and he it was a pack of six. >> He looks like he's been driving for a while. >> Right. Just all kinds of red flags, man. I would not drive from Tennessee with a vest carrier on >> No. >> or even a duty belt on. >> As soon as I get off I take that [ __ ] off. >> I'm tired of being in it. I hate driving from Topgolf to my house with this [ __ ] on. >> The the least amount of time that I can spend in this thing the the better. >> And his vest doesn't even feel like it has any kind of got no or anything in I asked him if you wore wore that work he acted like it would it wouldn't be a big deal if he wore it at work but then I okay do you or do you not? It does have Kevlar thing in here. >> Behind the scenes the officers were already connecting dots that did not add up. The moment you clock out you want that gear off. Every officer knows that and the vest itself did not look right either. Something about the whole setup felt assembled rather than issued. >> Pretty much he he had to have attempted to act like law enforcement like trying to make a traffic stop. Uh But as far as just saying something to somebody Wearing what he's saying or wearing what he's wearing is I guess not >> It's not it's it's kind of protected type thing. >> Yeah. He he hadn't he hadn't really crossed the law yet. >> He's getting >> But he's he's walking a fine line. That I mean man. Like you know I even went to go buy a patch at the place on Douglas. >> Yeah top tier top tier yeah. >> And they wanted to verify >> law enforcement >> who I was. I mean cuz they don't want to be associated with someone buying [ __ ] that isn't law enforcement. >> His his ID checks out he's got no warrants no want >> I wonder if he's got any uh >> car checks back to him >> Yeah. >> supervisor contact that we could talk to a supervisor. We'll put his patch back on like he's had it. Cuz >> got a picture of his ID and stuff. >> Then came the line that changed the energy of the whole scene. [music] He had not crossed the law yet. That matters because at that moment the gear alone was not enough to necessarily keep him in custody. >> I mean, I got him on video wearing it, so do you, I'm I'm sure. >> He's wearing what looks like dress beautiful hats. >> Yeah. And he says the alcohol is his girlfriend's. >> Yeah, that's what he told me, too. >> I was like, well, even if it's your girlfriend's, if you're transporting an open container, that's against the law. Doesn't matter whose it is. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's uh Ah. I don't I don't want to ruin the kid I mean He definitely needs to get his life together. >> Yeah. >> But I'm not going to ruin the kid's life by >> he'll give us a contact number for a supervisor at work or something. >> If you like body cam stories with consequences, click that subscribe button and stay locked in. >> I wouldn't worry about the jail thing right now. >> I really don't want to go to jail. But the beer part, like I said, that it's not in my possession, right? >> It is in your possession, it's in your car. >> By you owning the vehicle, it being in your vehicle, and it sitting beside you, that's considered in your possession. >> I'm going to try I mean >> I mean >> We're trying to work with you here. >> I know. >> We're We are trying to work with you here. >> I understand that. >> But we need >> I'm trying to I'm trying to keep my law enforcement happy. >> We're not looking to take you to jail, but >> We're not looking to do that. >> We want to talk to a supervisor. >> Like the vest and [ __ ] we I care if you take it. I mean >> Okay. >> Got to keep me out of trouble. >> Well, we we want to talk to a supervisor. >> I mean, it's on my phone. >> In your phone? >> All right, I'll go and grab it. >> It's Campbell County? >> Yes. I haven't been to work in >> Like, you haven't been to work in 2 weeks? >> I did >> So, you haven't been to work in 2 weeks, but you're wearing the uniform pants, duty-style looking shoes, and a vest carrier? >> As if driving cross state in your jail gear isn't bad enough, he hasn't been to work in 2 weeks. Tell us in the comments how this makes sense to you, because it certainly doesn't to us. >> It's just weird to me that you weren't even recently on duty and you're wearing the vest carrier. >> I mean, I I just I I can't say that I don't >> Where'd you get the vest carrier from? Did you order it online? >> No. No. >> From a friend or >> I got it off of a >> Bought it at a store? >> Uh it's a It's a store over there in Knoxville, Tennessee. You can only be buying from them. I got it I bought it like 4 months ago. >> The call did not go to anyone official. It hit a voicemail. Mike dropped the number he gave them was not a recognized agency line. >> So, I don't know if Jacob actually works at jail, but it doesn't sound like he actually does. Unless he got hired on within like the last 2 weeks. >> What was What county was it? >> Campbell County. >> That's what his check stub showed. >> This is dated 11 18 of 22 for Jackson Jones Campbell County Government Sheriff's Department. >> His story about Campbell County did not hold together cleanly. The paperwork was dated. The address did not match. He appeared to have had some connection to the county at some point, but appeared to was not confirmation. And without confirmation, officers were still in the same place they started. Suspicious gear, a shaky story, and a legal line they had not seen him cross yet. But had a Hail Mary just landed in their laps? >> All right, tell me exactly what you just said. >> Cuz he was dressed like a cop. >> Yeah. >> a sheriff thing, but it had sheriff written on the side, right? >> Right. >> And I live on 62 off of Adam Road. He was sitting in a driveway >> 251 >> County Highway. >> right beside 62 Highway. >> And I pulled up and I was staring at him cuz he was in there kind of too tight. And I was like We live on a one one way in, one way out. And you know, we all we all was watching for cars. And I sit there and I was staring at him. And uh I sat there for about 10 minutes just staring at him. And I'm like, "Man, who is this guy?" >> Kind of odd. And and and >> our neighbor's driveway. And I sit there and I stared at him and stared at him. And I drove off. He got right behind me. So I followed. >> Uh-huh. >> And uh he's driving along. He's right on my right on me. >> And I'm like, "Oh, I'm going to pull to the side of the road and see what's up." >> It was just from >> over there by the Harriet Avenue. >> From there all the way to the Sonic. >> I went to Compton Terrace. >> Okay. >> And I pulled in the Sonic, he pulled in behind me. He gets out and I say, "Can I help you, sir?" He's like, "Well, uh I was wondering what what was your problem you were staring at >> me >> over there in the driveway." And I said, "Yeah, I was kind of curious who you was because that's kind of odd that uh I know who you was. I was kind of curious cuz I live down the street. I was kind of seeing what's going on. And I was staring at you to see who you was." >> Jones thought the uniform was the problem. But what he did before the stop with officers was about to become the detail he could not explain away. >> He goes, "I'm a I'm a uh undercover cop for Wellston. And I run uh my partner I run with the patrolman a Welton. And I said so just be curious you're pretty young how old are you? He goes I'm 22 years old he just turned 22. I was like man you're pretty young to be a cop be an investigator. Right. And I said what brings you to be a cop? He was like is he in the family or whatever he was just talking to me. He goes yeah a lot of my family are cops and stuff and that's when I became a cop at 18. And then he goes well I got a call I got to let you go and he left. And then when he left he came towards uh by the bridge of on a turnpike bridge and he took a U-turn and was trying to pull another car he started flashing his lights at him. >> Really? >> And I don't I don't know if if they pulled over or not but he was flashing his lights like he was trying to pull them over. >> Let's refresh everyone's memory of a statement Jones just recently made to the officers. >> You're you're a deputy sheriff? >> Uh well I mean I work at the sheriff's office. >> Okay. Were you a corrections officer for the sheriff's office? Okay. >> He's not a sheriff he's a correction officer at a jail meaning he has no authority to pull anyone over at any time. >> I was like this is kind of strange. >> Right. >> I got home a little while ago and told my wife I was like this car pulled me over and I was talking to this guy and I was trying to see if he was a sheriff. Oh yeah cuz we got a cop apparently named Welton. I was going to call him later on when he wakes up to see if he works nights yet to see if he's working. That guy really popped it it's odd how he was acting. >> I got you. Can you hang out here for a minute? >> Yeah. >> All right. Don't go nowhere okay? All right. Did you hear all that? >> Yeah. >> So y'all want him? >> Yeah that happened out in town though. >> That's true. Okay yeah so it's going to be hard it didn't happen been County so but yeah. All right, we're taking >> I told this guy >> Up to this point officers had suspicious gear and a story that did not fully hold up. With the assistance of this witness, they had something completely different. Someone who Jones told directly that he was law enforcement. Someone who watched him attempt to conduct a traffic stop. But there is more that they did not see coming. >> I I haven't found any guns yet, but I haven't done like a thorough search of his car yet. >> Cuz he had a gun on the side. >> He did have a gun on the side? >> Oh yeah, you seen it. >> In a holster? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And he had handcuffs. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean just like just like you had. All he didn't have was a body cam and then right here on his chest right here it just said sheriff. That was it. >> I got pictures of that. >> Yeah. >> Uh so when we make contact with him he doesn't have a firearm on him, but that doesn't mean it's not in the car. >> And then he told me he had let me go cuz he got a call. That's why he let me go out of Sonic cuz he goes, "Well cuz I said >> he flipped a U-ey on someone and was flashing their lights like you >> Right past over the interstate the right when I passed underneath it he put the U-ey and was going back towards, you know, the >> Going back east? >> Yeah, and start flashing lights at that car. I was like That is odd. And then I got home I just got home cuz we were coming back to Arizona to get some parts for my car and then I told my wife I was like, "Man, this is kind of strange." My car was sitting in the driveway and >> you would have called it in way earlier, but I'm glad we got him though. And then I was thinking, you know, I was sitting there thinking >> The witness also confirmed Jones had a gun in a holster, handcuffs, something that looked like a body camera, and the word sheriff across his chest. All of it was visible when he walked up and introduced himself as a cop. >> And the weird thing he didn't flash his lights at me. Nothing. He just got right on my right on my bumper, man, and then he just followed me into town. I was like This is kind of weird. I'm going to pull into Sonic to see if he's going to pull in with me. Right when he pulled in he parked his car right in behind mine where I blocked him >> Blocking you in? >> Yeah, and I was like that's kind of odd. >> Right. Right. Okay. Good. I'm glad you came over here and told us cuz that sealed the deal cuz we were going to let him go. >> They were going to let him go until one good Samaritan witness interview changed that outcome entirely. >> Turn around. Face the other way. Put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest for impersonating law enforcement, all right? And then you also have a charge for transporting an open container. >> Oh, can my girlfriend come pick up my >> Uh not at this time. >> Okay. Do you know how long I'm going to be in jail because I'm impersonating a cop? >> Okay. Well, your mom lives here, so >> Well, I know that. >> I'm not too worried about that. >> Well, I mean >> All right. Go ahead and step on out. I'm going to double-check make sure you don't have anything in your pockets or nothing. Face the car over here. >> in my pocket. >> You got a vape? >> Yeah, man. >> Where at? >> My right pocket. >> Your right pocket? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I used to work in a jail. >> But you used to work in a jail? >> Yeah, I used to work in >> See, so you know what what goes down in a jail. >> The irony is hard to miss. Jones wanted people to believe he had the power to arrest others, but in the end, he was the one being taken to jail. >> Sorry, I didn't hear you when you said >> I'm I'm just trying I'm just trying to be nice and be normal. I'm not trying to Um nobody knows that I'm going to jail because it's my first time. >> Yeah, but >> Okay, you'll be able to make a phone call when >> I can't get to the jail. I don't know anybody. So I'm going to go to >> We'll be able to give you phone numbers. We'll write down phone numbers for you and you'll have a piece of paper with their numbers. >> Did you talk to my >> Your cousin? >> Jacob. >> Yep. >> Did he So he knows I'm in >> Uh he doesn't know you're going to jail because we didn't confirm what we know now until we talked to the RP. Uh so Huh? Reporting party. Okay. Well, that's because you're not long long prison. >> All right. >> Um >> So, you all good? >> But, Jacob wanted me to let you know that if you try to come back there and get a job, you won't be hired. Okay? So >> Usually So, since this is your first offense going to jail, right? >> Mhm. >> Okay. So, and I'm from Tennessee. It's I don't usually I shouldn't be in jail that long. I should be on the >> It's all up to the judge on that and whether or not you have the ability to bond out financially. >> I'll go to court tomorrow on Monday, so they have to let me out. >> Possibly. >> So, I I've never been to jail. >> Uh it depends on if you bond out. >> I saw them have to get out. >> Once you get in and get booked in, there'll be a bond amount that'll be set and then if you can bond out with the bondsman or whatever. >> pays me all the way from Tennessee, will I be able to >> They'll have to get with the bondsman here, make a payment to the bondsman, and then the bondsman will come bond you. >> Oh, okay. So, they just got to contact them. >> Yeah. All right? >> The confidence Jones had at the start of the stop was gone. Fear was starting to set in. >> You'll be at the Oklahoma County Detention Center. >> Is that >> Huh? >> In Oklahoma, is that in that building or >> It's our detention center. It's our jail. >> Okay. Well, it's pretty good size, yeah. >> Yeah, a lot of people that go to prison say it's the worst place to be. >> Oklahoma County? >> Yeah. It's not a good place. >> I'm in Oklahoma County Jail, but I found out that it's small. >> Yeah, our our county jail sucks. >> Well, it was small. >> Oh, this this one's big. A lot of people in it. >> I had six cells. >> Six? >> It's like six like that. >> Uh we we have uh we have 200 cells on the floor and we've got 13 floors. >> So, I don't have like a cell on my cell. >> Probably not. >> My cell is different from mine. and then I worked there cuz it was like it's like a different it's a one door and you walk in and everybody's in the day room and then you got >> We got slider doors that go into a big day room and there's cells that line the wall all the way around. And that's just one pod and then there's four pods on each floor. And there's 13 floors. >> I I just don't I'm not I don't want to get no trouble but >> Well, it's it's a serious deal when you're impersonating a police officer, so >> Well, I know how I don't know how long it is. I mean first I mean since I don't have any criminal record, I >> Yeah, it'll be up to the judge to decide that. All right. >> He started this stop acting like he belonged in law enforcement. He ended it by asking how jail works. The arresting officer wasn't holding back saying it's the worst place to be and no, he won't be getting his own cell. It was later confirmed off camera by his own cousin, the Campbell County Sheriff's Office administrator, that Jones no longer worked there and would not be rehired because he had previously impersonated a police officer and that is what made this moment even worse for him. The very person Jones seemed to think would help explain this away ended up confirming the detail that hurt him the most. Paired with the witness on scene, 19-year-old Jackson David Jones of Choctaw, Oklahoma was charged with impersonating a police officer and transporting open containers. He was held on bond but no publicly verifiable conviction or sentencing outcome could be located at the time of this reporting.
