On Wednesday, January 4th, 2023, officers were called to a home in Doraville, Georgia, just northeast of Atlanta. They arrested 41-year-old Walfredo Bautista-Miranda on a misdemeanor family violence battery charge against his wife. He was granted bond on that charge, and the court ordered him to stay away from her. He didn't. 2 weeks later, on the night of Wednesday, January [music] 18th, he confronted her inside that same house. He snatched her phone out of her hands and punched her in the face. When she fell, he pinned her down, cut her cheek with a knife, and squeezed her neck until she couldn't breathe. She got him off her and ran from the house for help with a swollen eye, a cut on her cheek, and marks on her neck. She told officers she believed he was drunk or high. By the next morning, he was wanted on warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated stalking. That brings us to Thursday, January 19th, and the video [music] you're about to see. At 11:32 that morning, his son called police. Officers were told Miranda had a machete >> [music] >> and that he was going to find his wife and chop her up. >> Yeah, sir. >> Hey, what's going on? >> Uh, I was the one who called the police. >> You called just now? Okay. >> Um, basically my dad uh >> Is your dad? >> Yeah, my dad. He ran off since yesterday. >> Uh-huh. >> Uh, basically he threatened my mom and he already has three warrants in his name. >> Uh, what um what do you know what direction he went? >> Actually, well, he was going to hit it he came back here and then uh me and him we went to that street you know just to see where he was going. >> He turned around and he came back here. >> And he comes and he was about to hit us over there at the little you know that intersection right there which is a Y. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> right there. So, basically we were going to go that way and he comes like full speed he was about to hit us and he basically still managed to dodge it. And uh basically he turned around and I'm assuming he went this way. >> Uh-huh. >> And we still waited for him outside that way. >> He was talking. >> You know, but he he didn't move. He didn't come out this way. I think he went that way or that way. >> Some chestnut somewhere probably. >> Yeah, somewhere around this area. Yeah, he's on drugs. He's he's iced up. And he has a weapon on him. >> Does he know anybody in the area? >> I'm not sure. >> Any Any body house he would go to? >> Uh probably in Doraville. Yesterday he lowered my mom. Yeah. No, but today no today he tried to hit me. He tried to hit us. He went with intentions of hitting us. Um >> He didn't He didn't He didn't collide though. >> No, no, no cuz he still was able to dodge it. Cuz I told him to stop. I was like, "Hold up. Hold up." You know, he's probably >> So, when when did he come back to the house? >> I'm not cuz we I stay in in Norcross. >> Okay. >> So, my mom she stayed with me today. >> Okay. >> Since yesterday. >> Oh. >> So, he just We blocked him. You know, nobody has to contact with him. >> So, y'all came back here to get some stuff and he was here? >> I was basically going on the way to work and he sent me a message. He said, "Hey, I'm I'm going to the house, my house." So, then I called the police over there and told them, "Hey, you know, he said that he's coming to the house." >> Hey, I'm going to check out that place down there. >> As Sergeant Pharaoh pulled through the open gate at the storage facility on Chestnut Drive, a white van came down the road toward him. The driver wore a red shirt. One back window was covered with white plastic. This was the moment Pharaoh knew he'd found his man. Pharaoh turned around and followed it onto the Cab Technology Parkway, where Corporal Hurd had already gotten behind it. Pharaoh told Hurd to make the stop and told dispatch to hold all radio traffic. >> Got to wait for you to let him out. Going to let him out. Got to GET HIM THROUGH. >> HE JUST 41 ME. HE JUST 41 me. Block him in right there. >> Yep. >> MOVE, HURTADO. MOVE. MOVE. MOVE. I WANT YOU TO SAY WHERE YOU ARE. STAY WHERE YOU ARE. NO, we're going to get it from this side right here. The man behind the wheel was wanted for strangling his wife and was reported to have said he'd find her and attempt to end her life. Corporal Hertzog's patrol rifle was inside that car. For rail could see him working the gear shift with officer Henson about 25 feet away and Hertzog just behind the car. For rail wrote that the suspect had to be immediately stopped from leaving. He also wrote that he just watched three violent forcible felonies happen in front of him. Aggravated assault. Felony obstruction and hijacking a motor vehicle. >> Put gloves on him. I'll take him out. >> Bring him out to the end of the block. >> Someone needs Someone needs grab him and get him out. >> EMS can't do anything with him without saying [ __ ] >> Okay. >> One of those hold there. >> Hold on. >> That'll get him down. >> Get him down. Like, does somebody need to go with us, or do you take him to Grady and I'll figure it out? >> aggravated assault, everything else. Okay. >> Yeah. So, you all want to follow us there or I don't know how that works. Okay. All right. >> Miranda had been hit six times. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where he survived his injuries. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the shooting investigation and handed his findings to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors found the officers were justified in the actions they took to stop Miranda. Our team went through Walter [music] Miranda's files. He never had a bond to make. 19 days after the shooting, a judge denied it, finding he was a flight risk, a danger to the community, and a risk to commit another felony before trial. All told, he spent 414 days, or 1 year, 1 month, and 18 days in the county jail before his case was resolved. On March 13th, 2024, he pleaded guilty to all seven counts in the indictment. Aggravated stalking, two counts of family violence aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, hijacking a motor vehicle, and two counts of possessing a knife during a felony. In court, he acknowledged the maximum sentence he could receive on all those charges was 100 years. His attorney didn't dispute the facts of the case. He told the judge his client was a decent person who was just severely addicted to meth, and that you could see that fact plainly in the video. He also told the court Miranda had meth possession charges pending in Dawson County. The defense attorney said he tried to get prosecutors to drop the carjacking count or go below its mandatory minimum. Prosecutors refused. Under Georgia law, that count alone carries at least 10 years to serve. The judge accepted the deal. Miranda received 20 years with the first 10 years to be served in a Georgia state prison. The other 10 years are to be served on probation. Miranda also received credit for every day since January 24th, 2023. He was ordered into a substance abuse treatment program [music] and ordered to have no contact whatsoever with his victims. He'd been given that same order once before. Today, he's still in the Georgia prison system. His release date is January 21st, 2033. He'll be 51 years old with 10 years of probation still ahead of him. His own attorney told the judge that video shows a decent man in the grip of a meth addiction. The record shows a man whose actions became increasingly violent towards his family as time went on. Is there anyone out there who agrees with the lawyer's framing of the incident? If so, tell us why. We are curious. As always, consider subscribing, giving us a like, and leaving a comment with your thoughts, and we will see y'all again on the next one. >> is [music] not clean. You got a felony. You got a felony.
