June 9th, 1912, Villisca, Iowa, population 2,500. The Moore family had just returned from a church evening program. Two young friends came home with them for a sleepover. Eight people fell asleep that [music] night. Two adults, six children. The youngest was 5 years old. None of them woke up. All eight were found dead the next morning. Bludgeoned in their beds with an axe. But what investigators found [music] inside the house was what made this case impossible to forget. Every mirror in the house covered with clothing, every window sealed. On the kitchen table, [music] a plate of uneaten food, and a bowl of bloody water. In the attic, cigarette butts. The killer had been waiting inside that house before the family came home. >> [music] >> He watched them arrive. He watched them eat. He watched them fall asleep. Then he used their own axe. And when he was done, he covered their faces, covered the mirrors, washed his hands, and walked out. A suspect was tried twice, acquitted both times. [music] The house still stands in Villisca, Iowa. Over 110 years later, no one was ever convicted. Follow for the full story.
