Five torpedo bombers took off from Fort Lauderdale on a routine training flight, [music] navigation and bombing practice over the Bahamas. Clear sky, calm ocean, 14 men, December 5th, 1945. 90 minutes later, the flight leader radioed back, "Both my compasses are [music] out. I don't know where we are. We must have got lost after that last turn." For 3 hours they flew the wrong way, deeper into the [music] Atlantic, away from land, into a storm. The flight leader believed he was over the Florida Keys. He wasn't. He was over the [music] Bahamas, heading out to sea. His trainees followed him. The last transmission [music] from Flight 19, "All planes close up tight. We'll have to ditch unless landfall. When the first plane drops below 10 gallons, we all go down together." They sent a rescue plane, 13 more men. 23 minutes [music] after takeoff, a fireball over the ocean. A merchant ship saw [music] the explosion, passed through the oil slick. The rescue plane was gone, too. >> [music] >> 300,000 square miles searched over 5 days, hundreds of aircraft, nothing found. No wreckage, [music] no rafts, no bodies. The Navy concluded, "Causes or reasons unknown." Six aircraft, 27 men, 80 years, the ocean has never given them back. What happened to Flight 19?
