(dramatic music) (piano playing "Deck the Halls") - [Narrator] Kevin Richard Bacon longed to live Under the bright lights of a large city. Born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, He often thought of the night life And the educational and financial opportunities That his beloved current small town Of Swartz Creek could not offer. For inspiration, He kept a photo of the Chicago skyline On his Facebook page. Kevin was born on November 28, 1994 To parents, Carl and Pamela. He attended Swartz Creek High School And then learned a trade At Sharps Hair Academy in Grand Blanc. He was in the process of advancing his education And had enrolled at the University of Michigan-Flint To study applied psychology. Friends described Kevin as fun, flashy, And passionate about doing hair and makeup. But only his closest friends knew That Kevin had been battling depression And anxiety for quite some time. In addition, it was the Christmas season, Which can be filled with self-reflection, Loneliness, and stress for some people. So on Christmas Eve of 2019, When Kevin returned to the apartment He shared with his roommate, He told her that he was determined To break out of his doldrums and meet someone new. He logged into the dating app Grindr And told her he had found someone who lived nearby. That someone's name was Mark Latunski. Until roughly 2010, Mark Latunski appeared to live an ideal life, Having attained most of the goals He had set out to achieve. He graduated from college in 1991 With a Bachelor of Science and Chemistry From Central Michigan University And then interned for Dow Chemical, The well known multi-national chemical corporation. Four years later, He completed a master's degree in chemistry From Iowa State University of Science and Technology. He was an accomplished family man with four children, A loving wife, and a large home. And earned more than $100,000 each year. However, according to court documents, His comfortable existence started to decline Some time around 2010 As he developed serious mental health issues. He was diagnosed on two occasions, in 2010 and 2012, With severe, recurrent, and chronic major depression With psychotic features, Adjustment disorder with depression and anxiety With paranoid schizophrenia, And borderline personality traits. In addition, he had been psychiatrically hospitalized Four times according to his attorney, Douglas Corwin. Court filings show his ex-wife Grew very concerned over his behavior, Which she described as erratic. When not on his medication he would watch torture movies, Speak random sentences out loud and respond, Stay out all night, Threaten to get rid of his children's animals, Claim their son isn't his child, And maintained poor hygiene. Ultimately, he outright refused To take his prescribed medications. As a result, his wife filed for, and obtained, A divorce from Latunksi in 2013. From then on, Latunski seemed to take on an entirely new persona. No longer the loving spouse, father, and head of household, He took to Grindr, an online dating app Marketed to members of the LGBT community. On his social media accounts and other male dating sites, Latunski used the name, Olykos Kai Lukas And published pictures of himself Wearing a leather kilt. In one post on Facebook, he claimed, "Those who really know me call me a straight arrow. I am a chemist and an experimentalist." As for being a straight arrow, His criminal record says otherwise. In 2013, according to police, Latunski faced kidnapping charges After allegedly taking his children to a hotel Rather than returning them to their mother, Violating their parenting agreement. Latunski's county criminal record shows That he was charged on September 19, 2013 With kidnapping, custodial interference. On May 15, 2014, there was a hearing In which it was determined that Latunski Was incompetent to stand trial. Consequently, Latunski was ordered to undergo psychological treatment. On January 14, 2015, it was determined That Latunski's competence was restored, However the case was subsequently dismissed Without prejudice. The official records states the kidnapping case is closed. With his legal problems behind him, For the moment, at least, Latunski entered into a serious relationship. He and Jamie Arnold met on a dating app And they married in 2016. Latunski shared pictures of both him and his spouse On social media wearing kilts, And in one post wrote, "After a hard work week, it's time for some play. "We are not looking for any trouble, Because we are the trouble that you're hoping to find." Ultimately, that relationship faded for Latunski as well. In a television interview with WNEM, Mr. Arnold spoke about the reasons He separated from Latunski. - Somebody who when you met was this kind gentle soul, Who turned into this monster. You just... You don't want to believe it. One time I came home and there's somebody there, And he tried to get me involved, And it was like, you know what, I'm gonna make me dinner, I'm gonna go to bed. (sighs) It's why I had to get out. So I had to get out. I couldn't take that lifestyle anymore. - [Narrator] Once again single, It was back to the dating sites for Latunski, And on Christmas Eve of 2019, He matched with an optimistic Kevin Richard Bacon. Unfortunately, Kevin was unaware That he would be headed to a house That local police were very familiar with. As they had recently been called to the Latunski home On multiple occasions. On October 10, 2019, Forty-eight year old James Carlsen initially told police He traveled from New York to Michigan for business And decided to meet up with Mark Latunski while in town. They spoke and agreed to hook up For a consensual bondage encounter. But something caused Carlsen to become terrified And call 911. - [Dispatch] Shiawassee County 911, where is your emergency? - [James] Um, this is gonna sound insane. I'm here in Detroit, I'm from New York, And I met this guy at the bus station who offered me a ride And I'm not even sure where I am but I broke out of his fucking basement, and I need a ride. I'm in trouble. I'm in trouble. I can't even find my way back to his place if I wanted to I don't know if you can pick up my signal I'm from New York. I'm walking down the street with a butcher knife. Sweetheart, I need help. - [Dispatch] Okay, I'm gonna get you help. Are you walking on the street right now? - [James] Yes, ma'am, I am. I'm passing a barn. It's all barns over here! I can't believe I don't know where I am. And I don't know, like, I've never seen anything like this happen. I don't know whether he drugged me, I don't know. I woke up in the fucking basement, okay? Chained in the basement with a leather thing On the end of either ankle And I cut it with the butcher knife that I have In my freaking hand, excuse my French. - [Dispatch] Okay, do you have anything on you right now? - [James] I have my phone ... I'm sorry, what? - [Dispatch] Are you carrying anything? - [James] A butcher knife. Until I see a police officer, when I see a police officer I will throw it. Until then, I don't trust that he's not walking up, Because I got lost, And I don't even know if I'm heading towards his house or not. That's why I'm dialing 911. I'm lost, so I don't even know if I'm headed Back towards his house. - [Dispatch] He woke up in a basement, He was chained to something, He cut the chain off. He's walking. - [James] I cut the leather strap that had the chain. (dispatch conversing) - [James] I just want to get out of here, And I want to go home. I don't even care about the legal case I was here for, I'm sorry, I can't help him. I need to go home. - [Dispatch] Okay, all right, Listen, I've got help on the way. What were you here for? - [James] I'm a volunteer co-advocate. I came here to help run a CAC meeting, And I was supposed to be meeting them at the bus station, I met this guy. I'm bi, he was cute, he hit on me. I don't know, we went out to the car and talked, We went to the store, had soda, I woke up in a basement. He obviously drugged me. - [Dispatch] Okay, when I get a trooper close to you, I'm gonna need you to put that butcher knife down though. - [James] Oh, that's not an issue, sweetie. I will be throwing it into the woods. - Okay. - Your officer is in no danger I've been a public advocate for 26 years- - [Dispatch] You don't need to throw it in the woods, But I just don't want it on you. Is there anything else on you at all? - [James] I don't even know if I have my cigarettes. - [Dispatch] Okay, you don't have a bag or anything else? - [James] No, I don't know where my bags are sweetie. - [Dispatch] Okay, okay. - [James] (indistinct) I met this guy here, And he seemed like a nice guy. He points outside like he wanted to talk, I go outside, he goes, oh no (indistinct). - [Dispatch] Are you injured at all? Do you need any medical attention? - [James] No, I'm not injured. I don't need any medical help. I'm in a panic right now, (unintelligible) the weakest link, honey, He had a leather strap to a metal chain, he's an idiot. - [Dispatch] Okay, where I'm showing you, The trooper is a little bit away. But when he gets closer, I'm gonna need you to put that knife down. - [James] That's no problem, ma'am. I have nothing but respect for the police officers. I've never had a problem with police. - [Dispatch] Just advising, He has a knife in his hand he used to cut that leather off, He's gonna put it down when he sees you approaching. - [James] I don't know if I'm walking towards him, And if he comes walking out, I don't know what I'm gonna do, I don't know if he's at the other end. - Okay. - Because I don't know. I was definitely chained, It's so weird right now, When this settles in, I'm probably not gonna be able to function. This is like shit from a movie. I ran down driveways, I ran all over so much That now I'm fucking lost, excuse my French. I'm not even sure if I'm being followed. I don't know whether he's got a dog. I don't know, I don't even remember going to his house. - [Dispatch] Okay. - [James] I don't want an incident report. I just really need a ride, just get someone down here please. - [Dispatch] Okay, if you see him approaching I'm going to need you to put that knife, - [James] Okay I don't see any lights at all. - [Dispatch] Okay, okay. - [James] Okay I'm starting to see lights coming up Behind me. They're a ways away though. - [Dispatch] Okay. - [James] I will sit this on the guard rail As soon as I can tell nobody is walking behind me. This is the second vehicle I'm seeing tonight. And I'm hoping this is a cop Cause if it's not I'm gonna be really scared. (sighs) I'm flagging down whoever this is, So if it's the maniac you're going to hear Some crazy shit, I don't know. I think this is a cop because that looks like An extra bright light. So I am now putting this down. I am unarmed. It is on the guard rail. I am not armed. - [Dispatch] He says that he's putting the knife on The guard rail. - [James] I am not armed. - [Officer] It's over here. - [Dispatch] He sees you. - [James] I just want you to know I'm not armed. - [Dispatch] He knows. - [James] I'm not armed. - [Dispatch] He knows. - [James] Yes, sir, I am. I'm not armed. I'm just really happy to see you! - [Officer] (inaudible) - [James] Yes, sir. You do whatever you have to, You're the police. - [Officer] Stand in front of my car. - [James] Whatever you need, sir. (inaudible) - [James] Okay, I'm going to hang up on you, okay? - [Dispatch] Yep, He'll take good care of you. - [Narrator] Within ten minutes, troopers arrived To find Carlsen on the side of the road. According to a federal civil suit filed in 2020 By Carlsen against Latunski. The story of how he met Latunski changed. Court filings state, he told officers he had taken a bus From New York to Michaigan explicitly to meet With Latunski, but that Latunski would end up Chaining him down in his basement And holding him captive. When asked, Carlsen declined to press charges. Weeks later on November 25, 2019, Police would return to the neighborhood When a twenty-nine year old man in a leather kilt Was observed by a neighbor fleeing from the Latunski home. He also called 911. - [Dispatch] Shiawassee County, 911. - Help me, I'm trying to get away from some creepy guy. He had me tied up in his basement. - [Dispatch] I'm sorry, what's that? - [Caller] I'm trying to escape from some guy who Had me chained up in his basement. - [Dispatch] He had you chained in his basement? Apparently when police asked Latunski why he was chasing The man, he replied that he was only chasing him Because he wanted his expensive leather kilt back. So, once again no charges were filed. Despite the frantic complaints of a man being chained And held against his will. When Kevin returned to his apartment After working on Christmas Eve, He told his roommate that he would meet up With someone who lived nearby. According to his roommate, Kevin left in his car shortly after five PM. Later that evening, the roommate received a text message From a person claiming to be Kevin, Saying he was having a good time And might not make it home that night. Kevin was not seen or heard from since. The next day, after he missed Christmas breakfast With his family, his father called the police. For three days, friends, family, and authorities Searched for Kevin. Friends came in from Flint and nearby towns To help search railroads, brushes, and farmland. Authorities eventually found Kevin's car In a public parking lot. And in it, were Kevin's cell phone, wallet, And a bag with his clothing. The cell phone led police to the dating app Where they discovered recent messages Between Kevin and Mark Latunski. A team of detectives immediately headed To the Latunski residence as other officers Filed for a search warrant. According to neighbors, It was around one AM on December 28, 2019, When detectives knocked on the door At the Latunski residence. According to the Lansing State Journal, Latunski answered the door in a leather kilt. He did not appear nervous and allowed The Michigan State Police to enter and search the house. Initially, the search came up empty But then a detective discovered a secret room In the basement that was not immediately visible. As police entered the hidden room, They encountered a horrific scene. Kevin's lifeless, naked body, strung up in the basement, Hung from the ceiling rafters by is ankles. Latunski quickly admitted to the crime. Police say Latunski explained how he had stabbed The twenty-five year old in the back, twice. Suspended him from the ceiling rafters with rope And then slit his throat. In a final gruesome act, police say, Latunski removed the victims testicles And cooked them for consumption. Furthermore he said he planned to use Kevin's blood And bones to fertilize plants on his property And that he had hoped to use his muscles for jerky. It turns out that just days after the murder, The postal service would intercept a package headed To the Latunski residence which contained a dehydrator. He was arrested and charged with two felonies, Open murder and mutilation of a dead body. After Latunski's arrest, detectives and a criminal analyst Tried to ascertain how many people Latunski met online. According to one detective, the only known victim was Kevin. Upon learning of the prior incidents at The Latunski residence, victim advocates were critical Of the police. Suggesting Kevin might be alive if more had been done. However, Lieutenant David Keiser of The Michigan State Police says, "there's not much they Could have done to charge Lutunski after the two incidents As, in both cases, the complainants declined To press charges." "But", Lieutenant Keiser added, "If those meetings Are consensual and we don't have a victim, Then you don't have a crime. Police believe that the decision not to press charges Is most likely because the victims wanted To keep those events secret. A lot of times, people have a professional life And a personal life. They don't want to intertwine the two. Their personal life is very secret, very protected," Said Lieutenant Keiser. Victim advocates however remain adamant more could Have been done. "How come Letunski wasn't more seriously questioned? Is it because it's just gay guys doing stuff in a basement?" One advocate asked. What would have happened if a girl was chained In the basement and ran out of there? Even if she said,"don't worry about it", The police most likely would have taken it more seriously. In an article the Detroit Free Press reported The police were aware that Letunski had been arrested As recently as December 10, For failure to pay child support. In addition, on October 15, a separate 911 call Was placed for a strange man searching a ditch, Not to mention a recorded history of numerous welfare checks At the Letunski residence. Yet, some say that even if the police pressed charges On their own, It might not have made a difference as assault cases Without witness cooperation are more challenging To prosecute. At his arraignment on December 30th via video, Latunski identified himself as Edgar Thomas Hill To his attorney. Saying he's part of the Thomas clan of Wales And was given the Latunski name as protection. According to court records. Latunski pleaded "not guilty" to an open charge of murder And one count of mutilation in the Christmas Eve death Of Kevin Richard Bacon. Bond was denied due to the heinous nature of the crime. In February 2020, he was found not competent to stand trial But restorable. He was then transferred to a psychiatric hospital In Ypsilanti in April 2021 where he received psychological Treatment and further testing. On October 5, 2020, he was ruled competent for trial. A date has been set for a jury trial for October 18, 2022. In a social media post on December 30, 2019, The American actor, Kevin Bacon, Paid tribute to the deceased. He said, "For obvious reasons, I'm thinking this morning About the friends and family of this young person, Kevin Bacon. His life was taken from him much too soon. His love was hairdressing. I bet he would have done a great job on this mess That's on my head. Rest in peace, K. B." American Youtuber, Jeffrey Starr, posted a video About Kevin's tragic death to raise awareness and funds. Starr helped raise more than twenty thousand dollars To help cover the funeral expenses. In addition, Starr implored his followers To be extra cautious when using dating apps. Detective Keiser added that those using dating apps Should have meetings in public places And keep their friends apprised of their whereabouts. He also advocated that people feel comfortable In their sexuality. He stated, "it doesn't matter if you're straight, gay, Bisexual, transgender, it's 2020 and it's okay In the society we live in and this culture now-a-days, You can tell somebody. Let somebody know where you're going."
