While detectives continued comparing witness accounts, another officer returned to the patrol car. He wasn't conducting an interrogation. He just needed some basic information before the investigation moved forward. >> You okay? Are you hurt anywhere? >> Just a couple scratches on my leg. >> Okay. Okay. >> I don't Sir, I'm so shocked. >> Okay. >> Like >> All right, I just need to get some basic information for you. I just need to make sure I know who I'm talking to. >> What investigators made of that statement would come later. For now, their focus remained on reconstructing what had happened in the basement just minutes before. As detectives moved through the house, Haley was taken to the police department. >> Come on out here and get you something to drink and There you go. Okay, we'll going to up here and we'll hang on to you. We'll go right over here. Go ahead and look at that red dot right over there. All right, now you can come on in. Okay. All right, just relax for a minute, okay? Relax. >> It's hard to relax when >> Just have a seat for a minute, okay? Let me get you something to get you something to drink, okay? All right. >> After the initial processing, detectives entered the interview room to question Hailey. >> Hailey. I'm Detective Todd. This is Detective Ritchie. >> I don't want to speak to nobody without a lawyer. >> You don't want to speak to anybody without a lawyer? Okay. All right. You want You got your water there. We'll just hang out for a little bit, all right? >> Okay. >> All right. >> I just have one question. Did she Is she fine? Is she okay? >> I'm not going to talk to you about the case. You already told me you don't want to talk about it, so >> I just want to make I just want to know that she's alive and okay. That's all I care about. I just know that it's safe on my behalf to ask for a lawyer before anything, just, you know, to have my back. >> Okay. >> I did not mean to hurt her like that. Swear to God, I didn't. Just wanted her to leave. I don't know what's going on with me. It's like I don't have no more emotions about it. I just don't I didn't expect the gun to go off. I don't know what I did. I just pray to God you're okay. Every time I pray for you. >> You want a Well Well I uh >> So when will I find out anything when I get a like I don't know. >> Well, I can't talk to you about it because you asked for a lawyer, which is your right. I'm not So I'm not saying this to be >> what you're saying. I see what you're saying. >> Yeah. I I can't I can't get into you know, anything about it with you because of that. And that's your right. I'm not trying to be rude or, you know, mean or anything about it, but that's just kind of how where we're at with that, okay? >> Okay. >> So >> And when can I call like I know my dad said he was going to get a hold of an attorney. Like when do I get a call? >> That that's going to be on them. >> Okay. >> Okay? So just hang out for me, all right? >> Okay. >> The interview was over almost before it began. But Haley's day wasn't. Officers escorted her out of the interview room and into a squad car. She was being transported. And at the end of that ride there was one thing left to tell her. >> Is there any way I can hit my vape once >> I'm sorry, I can't. >> Okay. >> I can't give it to you for long, sorry. >> I want to get back to your dad. >> I wish I could. From a guy that smoked for like 20 years, you'll need it, okay? All right. Come on, Ashley. Okay. I want to get right over here to this door right here. Sometimes these floors are slick. >> I can't get that one. >> Okay. Go ahead and go. Go and have a seat right there on that concrete bench. Okay. So, this is the part that I tell you you're being booked for murder. She did not make it. Okay? So, you're going to be what we call an NC hold. We can hold anyone up for 48 hours before we get charges against you, okay? So, you are currently on an NC charge for murder, okay? You understand that? Do you have any questions? Okay. >> What happens after the 48 hours? >> We'll have something that will >> Will I make court come? >> Yeah. We'll have all the charges before then, okay? >> New record, not a warrant. >> Huh? >> New record, not a warrant. >> Yeah. Signal one. >> You think that's what I'm going to get charged with for real? >> That's what we're holding you on right now, okay? >> Responding officers found a 30-year-old Cheyenne Mitchell in the basement with a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her obituary describes Cheyenne as a woman whose life was marked by love, laughter, and creativity. She was a devoted mother to her son and a talented artist. She will be missed by a wide circle of people who loved her. Detectives now had witness statements, scene documentation, evidence collected inside the home, and a suspect who, as is her absolute right, declined to speak without an attorney. But, those pieces could only tell them so much. To fill in the gaps around what happened inside the basement, detectives returned to Elijah. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer, a lawyer appointed by the court, or a lawyer from the public defender's office will be provided to you before and during questioning without any cost to you. Do you understand? >> I understand. I understand I got I'm going to court or nothing. I >> No, these are these are your rights. I already told you you're going to leave here and everything today. You're not >> You're just telling me my rights. >> I'm just telling you your rights. Yes. Yeah. >> Yeah, I will answer your questions. >> Okay. Big question. I think >> I'm still like shook from it. >> Sure. >> Like I don't know like >> Okay. Just tell me what Tell me in your words what happened. >> Uh Everything was good for like when I got there uh But, him her Cheyenne and my uncle >> Yeah. >> They had started arguing and fighting and I was upstairs with my kids. And I could hear them downstairs like yelling and fighting and stuff. Whatever. And then I don't know why, but uh Haley, she got into it and she said something to uh Cheyenne like, "You need to leave. You need to get out the house now or whatever." >> Mhm. >> Cheyenne got mad at her and they got into it and I started to fight. >> [snorts] >> And Haley Haley had ran upstairs and got a gun >> [snorts] >> and went back down there and had shot her. >> Okay. >> [snorts] >> So, and that's kind of something we're hearing going around the house. So, um was uh your uncle and Cheyenne down in the basement? >> Yeah, they both was they both was fighting down in the Yes, they was arguing They was arguing in the basement. >> Do you know what they were arguing about? >> even know. I don't know. I I just got there. [snorts] I don't I don't even know what they was arguing about. >> Oh, you just got there? >> Yeah. >> Where Where were you at? >> getting tacos. I was getting tacos. >> Oh, yeah? Where at? >> On Troy Old Troy Street by the uh the They got a taco truck on Old Troy Street at the uh >> the >> the >> Yeah, like that little UDF there? Love them. They're so good, aren't they? >> Yeah, they are pretty good with the red sauce. >> Yeah. >> it's crazy and then I don't all that [ __ ] happened and right after that. It's crazy. >> Um so, you got back from getting tacos and then they're kind of Do you know what they're arguing about or anything? >> So, they could have been arguing about anything. I don't know, to be honest, like anything. >> Okay. And then does your uncle come upstairs at some point in time? >> Yes, he did come upstairs. He was He was fighting with her, arguing with her, and he he just came He walked upstairs and he was about to leave, I think. >> Okay. >> Take off. >> Do you know where You have like a front door and a back door. Do you know what door he was leaving? >> I don't know. I think maybe the back door, I think. I don't know. >> Okay. >> It was >> It was [snorts] this around the time that Haley yelled at Cheyenne or or vice versa? >> Right when he was coming upstairs. Right when he was coming upstairs, uh Haley Haley uh told her she needed to go and leave right when he was walking upstairs. She had yelled down there like, "You need to leave or whatever. You need to go." And they started to argue. And [snorts] that's when the fights They started fighting. >> All right. So, when Haley yelled that, did Cheyenne say anything back? >> Uh Yeah, she said She didn't say I couldn't really hear her cuz I was upstairs and she was she was saying something. I couldn't hear her though. She was up like downstairs in the basement. >> Was it directed at Haley though? >> Yeah, I think so. >> And then, did Haley get up and go downstairs then? Is that what happened? >> Uh Uh yeah, she did go downstairs. She walked downstairs. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> And then, did you hear any Did you go down there at that time? >> No, I was up there with my with my kids. >> Okay. Did you hear anything that was happening downstairs? Like was there yelling or >> Yeah, there was there was there was there was shouting and there was shouting. >> Okay. Um could you hear any physical altercation at the time? >> Uh not really. Not at the time though. >> Okay. And then, I think you said at some point Haley comes back upstairs. >> Yeah. >> And then, she goes and grabs a gun? >> Yes. >> And was that in your guys' room? >> Uh yes. >> All right. Um is it her gun? >> It is in her name. It was >> She bought it. >> I'm not old enough to have a gun though. >> Right, but she is. >> Yeah, she is. >> So, your room, if I come in the front door of your grandma's house, your house your room's off to the left cuz grandma's is off to the right. >> in the front door, you said? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, my my room would be the one on the left and it has a Golden State sign like a basketball sign on it. >> Warriors? >> Yeah. >> Big Curry fan? >> Yeah. >> So, she came up. She grabbed the gun. Is that the only gun you guys own? >> Yeah. >> Do you know what kind it is? >> It's a Taurus G3 CC. >> What caliber is that? >> Nine. >> Have you ever shot it before? >> I've shot it. >> Yeah. Are you a good shot? >> Huh? >> Are you a good shot? >> I mean I I don't really I went to shooting range or it was like uh It Yeah, it's like a shooting range one time. I'm I'm pretty good at shot, I guess. >> Yeah, some people find competition in that fun and everything, but so you see her go back downstairs with the gun? >> Uh Uh yeah, I was I saw her grab the gun and I was trying to tell her like, "What are you doing? Put it down." this, that, and the other. >> Did she say anything? >> mad. She was mad. She's like when she when she gets in her like when she gets in her like mad like that, she don't hear nobody talking to her like she don't listen she don't care like she don't listen. I don't She was like blacked out or something. I don't know. She wasn't listening to me, I know that. >> So you told her >> I was trying to get my kids get my kids out the way from seeing her like fighting with fighting with her. >> Did you see any marks or anything on her at that point? >> Haley? >> Yeah, after she came up the first >> She She kind of had like a mark on her like a scratch or something a scratch on her face or something and uh >> So it's maybe they had gotten maybe having a physical? >> Yeah, yeah. >> Okay. >> [snorts] >> They had been physical, but I didn't I didn't really I didn't I didn't really like see them get physical, but they I know they got into a fight. >> marks on her. >> they both she went down there and then they both started arguing and fighting and yeah. >> [music] >> The investigation continued after that interview. Just 1 week after the shooting, a Montgomery County grand jury returned an indictment charging Haley Lynn Harvey with two counts of [music] murder and two counts of felonious assault. Each count carried a firearm specification. Two murder counts for a single death. One alleging that Haley purposely caused Cheyenne's death, the other alleging that her death resulted from the commission of a qualifying felony. Ohio law allows prosecutors to charge both theories. Nearly a year later, facing the possibility of spending the rest of her life in prison, Hailey accepted a plea agreement. She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. In exchange, the murder and felonious assault charges were dismissed. On January 27th, 2026, Hailey Harvey was sentenced to 13 to 18 years in prison. The case was over, but for Cheyenne's family, the loss didn't end with the sentence. A life was gone, and the people who loved her were left to live with that absence.
