Man, I just, bro, I just wanted to go to the store, bro. And now I'm at the I just wanted to go to the store, bro. That's it, bro. And this just approached me with a knife, bro. And I just blew. I blew, bro. I was in fear for my life. He approached me with a knife, man. I just called a bee. Picture this. April 26th, 2026. A Costco parking lot in Strongsville, Ohio. Suburban Cleveland. The kind of place where the biggest drama on a Sunday is somebody snagging the last rotisserie chicken. It's business as usual inside a local Costco. But in a matter of seconds, a confrontation outside the store erupts into gunfire. 911. Where's your emergency? >> Strongsville Costco. Somebody just got shot at the exit. >> Somebody got shot at the Costco. >> Yep. >> Are they breathing? >> I don't know. I ran I ran the opposite way. >> Okay. Sorry. Hold on just a second for me. >> Yep. >> 911. What's the address of the emergency? at the scooter or at Costco. [music] Costco. >> Inside or outside? >> Inside or outside? >> Outside the Costco. They're just This guy just gunned someone down. Several shots. The person is laying on the ground. The active shooter was still standing there. >> People on the ground parking lot. >> It was [music] a white male, longish curly hair with a hat. >> Uh was it like a dark bluish jacket? I took a picture. >> Police and fire dispatch. Yeah, I was just in line for gas [music] at Costco and it sounded like there was some shoot gun gunfire. >> Yes. [music] >> And I just got the hell out of there. I >> Mhm. >> I hope everybody's okay. But that was scary cuz [music] I was just inside too. So >> I understand we got a lot of calls. If you don't have any information on the shooter or the victim, I need to hang up and take other calls though. >> Okay. Yeah. Bye. >> Okay. You have >> What's going on there? >> Um gunshots fired. >> How many? >> One of my employees got hit. Um, Randy was hit with gunfire. Randy was hit with gunfire. >> Randy was hit. Randy Randy told her got to drop the gun and the guy shot him. >> Yeah. >> Can you give me some information? Is the person who did the shooting still in the store? >> I don't know. >> Do you know where they went? Did they go off? >> No, I have no idea. >> I have no idea. >> Do you know who there's some strong going in Strongville? >> Yes. The officers on the way. We're trying to get some information. Randy was hit by the Randy drop the gun and it looked like the guy shot him and I where it was right right in front of the store. I think that might be the guy. I'm freaking terrified. >> Anyway, >> what >> sir? Is the person that is injured inside or outside >> I think it's that guy with the shorts. I think it's that guy. BE CAREFUL. BE CAREFUL WITH HIM. >> SIR. >> YES. >> The person who is injured, where are they? They're in front of Costco in Strongsville. >> Inside the store or outside the store? >> Um, outside the store. >> Okay. And who do you think did this? Is this person outside? >> Yes. It's a tall the white gentleman with wearing shorts and a hat. I don't know. >> [music] >> The shooting was over in seconds. 22-year-old Christian Bryant's freedom lasted only minutes longer. By the time the initial chaos subsided and officers secured the scene, he was detained as the alleged shooter and placed in a patrol car, uncuffed and still in possession of his cell phone. >> I hear you. I'm going to talk you in a second. Okay. >> HE JUST BROUGHT A KNIFE TO ME. HE JUST BROUGHT MY WORD, BRO. >> I HEAR YOU. >> RELAX FOR A SECOND SO WE CAN RUN YOUR AID. OKAY. Give me one second. >> Can I tell you what happened? Oh, >> yes. Not right now. >> I was in fear for my life. take care of him for his life. >> I was in fear for my life. I was in fear for my life. According to published reports, the man Bryant allegedly shot was 61-year-old Costco employee Randolph Carrian. Randy, to those who knew him, he'd been hit in the chest, the abdomen, and the right arm. When first responders reached him, he was still conscious, still able to answer questions. Officers and a few good Samaritans worked to render aid. You >> can, Randy. You got it. You got it, Randy. Okay, just keep thinking, bro. You got to get back home to mom, bro. >> Come on, Randy. You got it. >> Hey, here's a seal. >> Yeah, he does. They're on their way, Randy. They're on their way. >> Carrian was eventually taken to a nearby hospital where he would succumb to his injuries. Meanwhile, seated in the back of a patrol car, Bryant, who stayed on the scene and called 911 after the shooting, appears focused on his phone. >> 32. >> What? >> CCOM's had a call from the alleged shooter. He kept saying that a male pulled a knife on him, so he shot him. We do have the number, but he hung up before we got connected to him. approached me with a [ __ ] knife. He think >> medical can approach you. >> Look, he dead for nothing. >> Just approached me with a knife. He look I think he going to die. He going to die for gang. >> Look at him. He just dead >> real quick. According to the footage, he seems to have recorded himself after the shooting and replays it on loop. >> Look at him. >> Look at him. He just Look, he dead for nothing. He just approached me with a knife. >> Just approached me with a knife. He look I think he going to die. He going to die for gangstalking. Look at him. >> Look at him. He just Look, he dead for nothing. Jurors often pay close attention to post incident behavior. Some may view Bryant's repeated replaying of the footage as unusual. Others may see it as a person trying to process a traumatic event moments after it occurred. As Bryant continues replaying his recording, investigators turn their attention to the people who witnessed the confrontation unfold. >> So, in a quick synopsis, what did you guys see? They were right. He was the guy that shot was right there on the walkway and he was out here and I saw him coming with the knife and threw the through the carts cuz they had the carts there. >> He just he was like, "Give me the gun. Let go of the gun." >> himself or what? But >> just >> the shooter was coming in. He was coming from this side towards him there >> and started shooting him. He went down and he stood over him and just clip. >> He stood over empty the clip into him. I'm surprised he's not. >> Well, they were point blank shots at least 10 of them. >> Yeah, he was standing over >> when he said, "Give me the gun. Give me the gun." He grabbed whatever he had and the guy flipped around the suspect and he reached inside. I thought he had some sort of strap on his gun. >> And then the gun obviously recovered it, but it's big. And he reached in. I swear it had a strap on it. He reached in and just started doing this. And >> get you guys to write. >> Oh, I can. Sorry. >> He's going to have a Yeah. Right. >> It would help the investigation if you could do it separately, not together. >> Absolutely. Okay. >> All right. Quick synopsis. What did you see? >> I was actually right where that volume there standing >> and checking out the light. So, I was actually looking at the soil. >> I heard the first shot. I was like, "What the hell?" Fireworks, you know, thing. I see the guy walking up. He's got like striped shirt. He's coming up. He's cut firing. White guy up 5'6, 57. Like, >> shorter than I. Yeah. >> Taller. >> Taller. Okay. >> Somewhere between there. And >> you saw it from here or did you move out? >> I saw it from here. I didn't move out here. >> I didn't see who he shot. I just saw that he was going this way firing at the guy. >> Yeah. >> I was like I started grabbing everyone in there. Get in the store. I didn't like out here. >> So I didn't see who he shot. Didn't see any of that. I just saw the guy pointing up on him like eight shots. Okay. Um, you want to fill out a statement? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> So, based off what they're saying, there's some kind of tussle, but the shooter then when he was down stood over top of him and emptied on him. Let's talk about the knife because this is where the case gets complicated. And before we go any further, you're going to see a breakdown of the surveillance footage. What those store cameras captured may be the single most important piece of evidence in the entire case. But first, we need to understand why the knife matters. Bryant repeatedly claimed that Carrian produced a knife. Witnesses reported seeing one. The arrest affidavit references it, and later reporting indicates investigators concluded Carrian did in fact brandish a pocketk knife during the encounter. But that's not the end of the story. It's the beginning of it. According to a published report by Fox 8 Ohio, police believe Caran displayed the knife only after Bryant had already produced a handgun. If that's accurate, the legal question becomes who escalated first, when they escalated, and whether Bryant reasonably believed deadly force was necessary at the moment he fired. This is a huge deal. Under Ohio law, a defendant doesn't have to prove self-defense. He only has to present evidence supporting the claim. Once that happens, the burden shifts to the prosecution, which must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did not act in self-defense. Now, let's look at the other side. Even if Carrian displayed the knife first, a jury could still conclude Bryant exceeded the bounds of lawful self-defense. Prosecutors are likely to focus on the number of rounds fired, the alleged split-second pause between the initial shot and the subsequent volley, and allegations that additional shots were fired after Corrian had already fallen to the ground. Ultimately, the case may turn less on whether Corrian presented a threat and more on whether Bryant's response remained reasonable once that threat emerged. And then there's the physical evidence. According to the affidavit, officers recovered 13 40 caliber shell casings from the scene. Detectives also recovered a Springfield XD40 handgun allegedly used in the shooting. The firearm was equipped with a drum magazine containing 37 additional rounds with another round loaded in the chamber. At that point, investigators had witness accounts, physical evidence, and a detained suspect. They believed they had enough probable cause to place Bryant under arrest for murder. And Bryant's behavior in the patrol car recorded while detectives were building their case would soon become part of the story as well. [sighs] Man, I just, bro, I just wanted to go to the store, bro. And now I'm at the [sighs] I just wanted to go to the store, bro. That's it, bro. And this just approached me with a knife, bro. And I just blew I blew, bro. I was in fear for my life. He approached me with a knife, man. I just caught a be. >> I just bro this [ __ ] easy. >> Second beat. This easy. >> I just, bro, I just wanted to go to the store, bro. And now I'm at the radio. He's got at least three or four DSWs if not just approached me with a knife, bro. >> And I just blew I flew, bro. I was in fear for my life. He approached me with a knife. >> Do we need more medic for you? >> 40. Do we need more medic? >> Easy. >> Just approach me with knife. He left. I think he gonna die. He gonna die for gangstalking. >> Hey, free me. >> I just died for gang. >> 7140. >> You can catch you a beat easy. >> Got it. >> Hey a Hey, bro. AC said you can catch you a beat easy. Look up. AC AC said you can catch you or beat that easy. Bro, I was in fear for my life, bro. They just randomly approached me enough. I ain't do [ __ ] I ain't do nothing. He just approached me with a knife. You can catch it with beat that easy. >> Hey AC, [laughter] >> bro. Hey, AC said AC said you can catch you with beat easy, man. That man, you catch you beat that easy, man. This bro, he going Bro, he going to approach me with a knife, bro. Why you approaching me with a knife? I ain't Bro, I'm fear. This just approached me with a knife, >> MAN. MY GUN. [screaming] MY GUN. NO, MY GUN IS GONE, BRO. >> Turn around. >> What' I do? >> Get out and turn around. >> What? >> What do you mean? HE APPROACHED ME WITH A KNIFE. >> HE APPROACHED He approached ME WITH A KNIFE. >> TURN AROUND. >> HE APPROACHED ME WITH A KNIFE. >> TURN AROUND. >> HE APPROACHED ME WITH A KNIFE. >> SHUT THE [ __ ] UP AND TURN AROUND. >> HE APPROACHED ME WITH A KNIFE. IT'S ON VIDEO. HE APPROACHED ME WITH A KNIFE. IT'S ON VIDEO. >> GIVE ME YOUR HAND. >> HE APPROACHED me with a knife. >> I'm going to tase you, bro. >> He He approached me with a knife. It's on video. He approached me with a knife. It's on video. I didn't do nothing. We're not holding car. >> He pulled a knife on me. >> Is my truck going to remain there >> for now? Yes. >> Okay. Okay. >> Do you have my key? Hey, I can't I only have one truck key. >> Okay. >> You guys have my key? >> Yes. >> Okay. You have my phone, wallet, >> phone, wallet, keys, and your hat. >> It should be a dinosaur on it. >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. >> Please pull the camera. Please pull the camera. Please pull the camera. >> Please. >> We will, but the things take time. Okay. >> Please just pull the camera. >> Bryant repeatedly asked officers to pull the surveillance footage, convinced they would clear him. Eventually, they did, but the tape proved far more complicated than the vindication he was counting on. Cameras capture Bryant, a commercial trucker from Texas, after he parked his rig at a Costco. He begins to walk toward the store entrance. But according to investigators, something's protruding from his pocket. A drum magazine built to hold a massive number of rounds. That's what catches Coran's eye. Words are exchanged as Bryant keeps moving toward the doors. Corrian follows, trying to stop him from walking in armed, and somewhere in that encounter, at least one witness says Carrian pulled a pocketk knife. What happened [music] next unfolded in a matter of seconds. Witnesses say Bryant fired a single round into Caran and then Bryant opened up again, firing multiple additional rounds at close range. Less than 24 hours after his arrest, Bryant was standing before a judge at his arraignment, facing allegations that could keep him behind bars for the rest of his life. >> Um, Christian Bryant. >> Yes. >> All right. Uh, you are charged with a murder to unclassified felony. uh murders carry a potential penalty and a definite uh prison sentence of 15 years uh to life in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. I did review the probable cause affidavit uh for your arrest on that charge. Uh I do find there was probable cause for you to be detained on the charge of the murder. And I remind I know there's media here. I know that the deceeded family has not given um permission for them to be shown on on uh TV. So I would ask that you respect that. Um did you want to be heard? Your honor, in respect to the victim's family, all they're asking at this time is that justice be served, that any witnesses who haven't come forward come forward, and that they, the media, etc. respect their privacy. >> Okay. >> All right. Um, anything else? >> No, your honor. Thank you. >> Anything else, Mr. DeFranco? >> Nothing further, your honor. Thank you. >> This man approached me with a knife. J Christian, as I said, you can address this in the future. All right, we're turn Bryant entered a plea of not guilty and the court set his initial bond at $5 million. 4 days later, Bryant appeared before the Kyhoga County Court of Common for the next stage of the proceedings. Among the issues addressed was whether the existing $5 million bond would remain in place. We'll go to a first appearance case 711745. Christian Bryant. >> Okay. Mine. >> Thank you. >> Thank you, honor. Assistant public defender Hannah 9, bar number 0102492. Uh, as this case makes its way to the grand jury, we would ask uh that the public defenders office be appointed to represent Mr. Bryant and we would ask that a reasonable bond be Thank you. >> All right. on behalf of the state. >> Thank you, Honor Daniel Clary. On behalf of the state of Ohio, judge, uh, the state is asking that you either consider continuing the bond as set on the municipal court or follow the bond commissioner's recommendation of $2 million. Your honor, there are victims uh here that would like to address the court if you'd like to hear from. >> All right. If they want to be heard, >> do you want to be filmed? Um, that's my name. >> Okay. All right. Well, would you state your name and tell me what you'd like to say? >> Good morning. My name is Holly Corrian. C O R R I G A N. And I'm the niece of the victim, Randy Corgan. Um, I'm here today, this morning to respectfully request that the bond be denied for Christian Pratt in this case. Um my biggest concern um is based on the risk of public safety at this point um and the likelihood that the defendant may not comply with the conditions um since he is a truck driver. He's out of state and he may have previous charges. [snorts] I believe that releasing the defendant at this time can pose that risk to others and may undermine the judicial process. So today, I'm respectfully asking you as the judge and the court to consider these factors and deny the bond to ensure the safety of the community and the administration of justice. Um thank you. Um and we look forward to the case. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Just to continue our request for the conditions of judge on uh April 25th, Mr. Ryan did approach the hospital in Strongsville. He is an over the road or I should say a commercial truck driver. He has zero ties to our community. Um he approached the front door armed with a 40 caliber handgun with a fully loaded 50 50 round drum magazine that was hanging out of his right pocket. Our deedent Mr. Corgan who was an employee at Costco was on a break. He was in his car and noticed this and attempted to stop him as he prior to entering the front door of this busy Costco at about 5:45 p.m. A struggle didn't ensue. Uh Mr. Bryant uh pulled his firearm, took us a couple steps back, pulled his firearm, shot Mr. Corgan, then advanced on Mr. Corgan as he was on the ground and shot him more as he was on the ground. Uh, so we would ask that a $2 million bond or continue the bond or a $2 million bond is appropriate. He does have a prior conviction out of Texas, I believe, for a firearm offense. So, we feel it's appropriate. Judge, he literally has nowhere else to go if you were to release it. So, we'd ask file victim's wishes except $2 million bond. Thank you. >> [clears throat] >> Okay. Your bond is set at $5 million cash property GPS standard monitoring with a condition that you're not permitted to leave the state. The public defender will represent you. Sir, were you listening? Or did you hear me read the rules regarding electronic monitoring? >> Yeah, I'm I'm hearing you. >> Okay. In order to be eligible, if you make that bond for electronic monitoring, you must sign the rules regarding electronic monitoring. Do you understand that? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Do you understand the rules allow you to be arrested without a warrant if you violate the terms of electronic monitoring? >> Yes, ma'am. >> All right. Thank you. Take care. You're welcome. Christian Bryant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. It's worth noting that while the indictment charges murder and felonious assault and carries firearm specifications tied to the shooting, it does not allege Bryant possessed the gun unlawfully. The state's focus appeared to be on how the gun was used during the encounter, not merely the fact that he had it. This is a fast-moving case. New information is surfacing almost daily. As of this upload, his next hearing is tentatively set for June 25th. But the core facts of the shooting, those are largely undisputed, which leaves us with the main issue the jury must decide. Where does self-defense end and criminal homicide begin? What are your thoughts on this case? Did Bryant act in lawful self-defense or did his use of force cross the line? As always, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
