On Sunday, February 12th, 2023, the highly anticipated Super Bowl, the National Football League's championship game, held the nation's attention. The showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs showcased an intense battle for football supremacy. Beyond its entertainment value, the Super Bowl carries substantial economic weight as Americans splurge on TVs, team merch and food and beverages. According to data from the National Retail Federation, Americans collectively spent a staggering 16 and a half-billion dollars on Super Bowl-related items in 2023, with a significant portion allocated to local dining and drinking. On this particular Super Bowl Sunday, 57-year-old Lloyd Preston Brewer ventured to a local restaurant to partake in the excitement of the game, accompanied by his niece and her boyfriend. Brewer expected to be joined by a romantic interest later in the evening. The establishment of choice was Conch Town Liquor and Lounge in Key West, Florida. The restaurant is located in a building owned by Brewer and his family. The Brewer family boasts substantial financial resources with diverse holdings in real estate and businesses in Key West. According to police records, Brewer stayed at the lounge for a short while after his niece and partner left, waiting for the romantic interest to arrive. But she never did. As he prepared to leave, he noticed what he described as unusual activity going to and from the back door of the bar, which leads to the parking lot. It was 26 minutes past midnight when Brewer went to the parking lot to see what was going on, and that is when he encountered the 21-year-old Garrett Hughes ... drunk, shirtless and urinating on the side of a building. CCTV captured what happened next. Here we can see the shirtless Hughes stumbling into the parking lot, drink in hand. He heads to a wall and begins to urinate against it. Next, we see Brewer, also inebriated, walk into the parking lot and witness Hughes urinating on the building. Brewer initially retreats. This is a key moment ... at this point, Brewer was not under any immediate threat of danger and had the option to go back inside the building and call the police. He did not go back inside. Instead, he turned around and walked toward Hughes. As he does, he can be seen searching his right waist area for his gun. Under Florida law, carrying a firearm in an establishment with a dedicated bar section is illegal. It is also illegal to conceal carry when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Next, Brewer approaches Hughes and words are exchanged. It quickly escalates and Brewer takes two or three steps back before charging at Hughes. What transpired next cannot be seen from this angle. But, according to witness statements and Brewer's own testimony, Brewer opened fire with a 9MM semiautomatic firearm. Based on crime scene evidence, Brewer shot three rounds. It was a single gunshot with a hollow point bullet that wounded Hughes. The round entered his abdominal region and lodged in his shoulder. Ambulance personnel arrived and transported Hughes to the Lower Keys Medical Center. But the 21-year-old died en route. Garrett Hughes was at the Conch Town Liquor and Lounge legally on invitation that Sunday, He accompanied his brother and a friend to watch the Super Bowl. Garrett was well-known in the community as a standout athlete at Key West High School. He ran track and played football under his father, the coach, before graduating in 2020. Back at the scene, police officers immediately detained Brewer and seized his gun. Multiple witnesses gave sworn statements to police while Brewer was brought back to the Key West Police Department without incident. He was subjected to interrogation by Detective Marcus Del Valle. [Detective] - Alright Preston, before we [Detective] - start anything, because formality, [Detective] - I'm gonna read you your rights, okay? [Detective] - Um, you get your water? I got water. [Detective] - I'm gonna read you your rights and [Detective] - go through this. [Detective] - I'll have you sign it, [Detective] - just saying that I read'em to you and then ... Miranda rights? I'll just sign it, I know what it says. [Detective] - And then, if you want to ... well, I have to read them. It's a formality. [Detective] - And then, if you want to give us your story [Detective] - I'm here to listen. [Detective] - Before we ask any questions, you must understand your rights. [Detective] - You have the right to remain silent. [Detective] - Anything you say can be used against you in court. [Detective] - You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask any questions [Detective] - and to have him present with you during questioning. [Detective] - If you cannot afford a lawyer, [Detective] - one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. [Detective] - If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present. [Detective] - You have the right to stop answering at any time. [Detective] - You also have a right to stop answering at any time until you talk to a lawyer. [Detective] - You understand those rights? I do. [Detective] - Okay, do me a favor. Just read this here. [Detective] - Do you have your glasses? Here's ... cheaters! [Detective] - Just read this here for me. [Detective] - The waiver of rights. If you can read it out loud for me. I have read this statement of my rights and I understand that my rights are, what my rights are. I am willing to make a statement and answer questions. I do not want a lawyer at this time. I understand and I know what I'm doing. No promises or threats have been made to me and no pressure or coercion of any kind has been used against me. Okay, that's very simple. [Detective] - Okay. [Detective] - And if I could borrow your cheaters [Detective] - because if not, I can't see. [Detective] - All right. [Detective] - Pretty much ... [Detective] - tell me what happened. [Detective] - And start, if you can, just start at the [Detective] - I guess the night, you were at Conch Town that night? Correct. [Detective] - Okay, go ahead and let me know, tell me what you got. I was there for the Super Bowl. [Detective] - Okay. I was with my niece and her boyfriend. [Detective] - Okay. They left. I am now single, so I hung out for a little bit longer to see if maybe a potential "suit-o-ress" might show up. Nothing happened. I was ready to go home. I noticed there was a lot of activity going to and from the back door. [Detective] - Okay. As we have discussed in the past. [Detective] - Yes. Yes. So I went out back to just see what was going on. As you know, I am armed. Nature of my business, my property. [Detective] - All right. I went out back and there was not one kid ... this was not a drug dealer, I don't think. Just a guy. And he had buddies with him. And there were, there were cars, but he was in between two cars. And there are people on either side and I guess they were all together. I don't know. They hadn't come from inside the bar. I don't know where they came from. And he's pissing in the parking lot and on the building, and I said, Man, can't you just go in the, I'll be honest, can't you just go in the fucking bar and piss in the toilet? And we exchanged words and as it progressed, he became more agitated and approached me and I said, look, I own this ... Stop! He continued to approach. I said, "I'm armed." It appeared as though he was reaching for something. The first shot went off this way. The second shot went off up in the air. To the best of my recollection, he was already on top of me. It happened that fast. [Detective] - Okay. There's no doubt I fired a weapon. [Detective] - Okay. Because, they wouldn't let me wash my hands. [Detective] - Yeah, we do that after. I immediately, once he was down, did not continue to assault him. I set my firearm on the hood of a car awaiting the arrival of the police. I did not render aid because other people showed up to render aid. [Detective] - Okay. And I know he's got a lot of witnesses. They're going to say a lot of different things. That's what happened from my perspective. [Detective] - Okay. But I can tell you, he was on me so fast that my second shot went in the air. [Detective] - Okay. It was that fast (snaps finger). It was on my property. I stood my ground. I feared for my life, period. [Detective] - Okay, on, just so I know, if you can, draw me a little map. You know the property. [Detective] - Draw me a map where like, where it was on the parking lot. So the parking lot is back here, I guess that's the rear parking lot, Right. And let's say this is this is a door for Conch Town, okay? Just go right here. Show me. Was it by the trailers or ... no. So there was like a car there. Well, you know the way to the back parking lot, right? Yeah. Yeah. Okay, now, not over here. Not. Not. These are the dumpsters, right? Right. Here's that Jeep that's been sitting there forever. Yes, it was approximately here. There was a truck parked here after it happened. It happened about here. Okay. I laid my firearm there. When did you, when did you make contact with him? As I came out, I was walking this direction. It started here. Okay. And where did it happen? Did the altercation happen, like in the parking lot itself or ... in the parking lot itself. No, no, no. Not about what I'm saying. Like, well, were you in between the cars? Were you in between the parked cars? Okay. All right. All of that's a matter of fact. It the cameras everywhere. Okay, So that all of that is a matter of fact. Okay. And then, as he approached me, I identified "I own all of this." Yeah, it's all my property. Okay? I identified myself as the owner of the property, identified myself as being armed. He still approached and appeared as though he was going for something? Okay. That's ... What did he tell you when you told him about what? Like what ... we were going back like "who the fuck are you?" We were just going back and forth on this thing and it just [snaps finger] that fast. It was not a long, drawn-out process. It really wasn't. Because if it had been then his buddies that were here, I mean they had they all coming together and have been a fistfight, things might have ended differently. But that dude was agitated already. I mean, you can test me for drugs or whatever. I don't know, I. I swear. I hope he's okay. I hit him in the abdomen. I don't think I hit him with the second shot because the second shot went in the air. It was that fast. So when, when the altercation happened that you all came together, was there any contact with you on him? Did you grab him? Did he grab you? Was there any of hand contact? Not to my recollection. Okay. It happened so fast, but with somebody coming at you that fast, I got you. It does. It doesn't matter. Now, if we're going to get into very minute particulars, that's when I'm going to ask for a lawyer, because I'm telling you the overall scope of what happened and the reason I asked for you is you understand the dynamics of that establishment. Yes, I do. And so, you know, I'm armed all the time. Nature of my business and what goes on back there. And really all I was doing was walking through here to see what was going on, to give you a call if something was happening. That's it. No, we have, and you always tell me people have been doing stuff back there, we got a good relationship. In all honesty, I don't think these were, I don't think they were guilty of anything. I think they were just drunk guys. Okay. They're local, I think. Right. And I can tell you one of'em is probably going to try to kill me. Based on ... Did they say anything? Uh, the looks. And finally, your officer that did not detain me, really he didn't handcuff me. But we went and sat on the steps because, originally, I was looking at the scene and the guy was looking at me like, "yeah, I'm gonna get even with you." And the officer's talking to him and he said, just come sit over here, in this direction. [Detective] - Right. [Detective] - So, just so I get it right ... [Detective] - You walked out of here, you were walking ... [Detective] - Just, you were walking, you walked out of Conch Town. [Detective] - and you walk in there when you made ... when you engaged ... Yeah. Here's over there pissing and he zipped his pants up and we had words and he came at me. Okay. And, I mean, there's no reason for me to go at a guy that's just pissing other than verbally, just, you know, really, go to the fucking bar ... they got three bathrooms. [Detective] - I got you. And so I don't know beyond that I can I didn't know him. He had no reason to have malice for me that I'm aware. [Detective] - Right. I mean, a lot of people know me, you know that. [Detective] - Yeah. I do not recognize him as someone that I've run into before. [Detective] - Okay. [Detective] - All right. [Detective] - And as far as words, you can't remember what he told you, anything like that? No, it was all ... I hate to say it, but you know, in the heat of battle, in the heat of the moment, words are exchanged. [Detective] - Yes. Can I be verbally abusive? Yes, I can. But did I walk up to strike him to cause him to come at me? No. [Detective] - Okay. Look at my size, I mean ... Iand my recollection is the guy was a little bit taller than I am. [Detective] - All right. [Detective] - Did he hit you? [Detective] - Did he strike you? No, he came at me in a threatening manner and it appeared as though he was grabbing, reaching for something, but he was coming at me. [Detective] - Did you see what he was like, what he was reaching at? I did not. [Detective 2] - What do you mean by "in a threatening manner?" Like, what could be threatening ... If you come at me with words I mean, yeah, we're gonna have issues because, I mean, where where he ended up to the best of my recollection, was outside here. Okay. [Detective] - Behind the cars. Right outside. Okay, Outside. You tell me if I'm incorrect, but that. Yeah. So he obviously came toward me. [Detective] - Did you find him here, next to the building? No. I found him in the middle of the parking lot, which is where I was, which means he came to me. [Detective 2] - When you came out where were his friends? There was ... Okay. I don't know if they were his friends. but there were other people. There were some over here and some over here. There were cars here and here. That's my recollection. So it was like he was isolated. [Detective] - So he was by himself, like, standing and pissing? - Right. Okay. Yeah, but they're not sitting around watching him piss. [Detective] - Right, right, right, right, right. [Detective 2] - Was there anybody back here by the back door? Anybody hanging out back there? I walk out ... I don't believe there was at the time. There was immediately afterwards. We were all [indistinct] ... everywhere. Afterwards. [Detective] - At what point did you draw on him? [Detective] - Was it here? When he got when I fired, he was about this close because I fired on him. It appeared as though he was reaching for something and he's coming at me. By the time he got that close I fired. and he's on top of me. [Detective] - Did he fall on you? He came ... yeah. [Detective] - Did he, like ... My second shot went in the air. [Detective] - Okay were you ... [Detective] - you fell on the ground? [Detective] - Do you remember if you fell on the ground and fell back. Yeah, I, I he came at me. Yeah, because when I ... Yeah, I got up, but he wasn't on top of me by the time it all ended. He was on the ground. Okay. [Detective] - I'm just trying to see [Detective 2] - Do you remember where he was reaching? [Detective 2] - like was he reaching ... It looked like ... on his side. Which is where ... I carry a firearm. I mean, there was no reason for this. This was ... [Detective 2] - Do you remember if you were holding the gun with one hand, or two hands? Me? [Detective 2] - Mm-hmm. Were you able to actually crouch out properly? I don't know. I will tell you what the best of my recollection is. [Detective 2] - I'm sure it happened pretty fast. Two, one. I mean, it was that fast. [Detective] - And, just again ... [Detective] - You're walking towards him? Yeah. I'm not walking toward him. He's walking toward me. [Detective 2] - You want to show him? Show him what you mean? [Detective] - I'm trying to get, like ... did you fall ... [Detective] - you said you got up off the ground? Yeah because when he came my second shot went in the air. It was that fast. Okay. All right. And I'm gonna maintain Stand Your Ground all day long. I mean, it's my parking lot. He's coming at me. I mean, What I hope comes out of this ... I understand your job, and I understand friends don't cross that line ... for your job. I think this is a case for a grand jury. [Detective] - Well, that's ... [Detective] - That's why we're here. You know my job. Yeah. I think this is a case for a grand jury to investigate all of the facts. [Detective] - This is something that we, we get all the facts. [Detective] - We get everything, the good, the bad, and the ugly. [Detective] - We put everything together [Detective] - and, you know, and before we do anything ... I don't want to go to jail tonight, but you know I'm not going anywhere. So ... ... take it to a grand jury. [Detective] - Well, that's up to the state, Preston. [Detective] - We put everything together. [Detective] - We take it to the state, then they make that decision. But, you know ... you know this wasn't a revenge thing. This wasn't one of the dealers back there, wasn't like I was hunting somebody. [Detective] - I got you. In no way, shape or form. [Detective] - I got you. [Detective] - You had gone to the bar earlier. [Detective] - What time you think you got to the bar? We watched the whole Super Bowl. [Detective] - The whole Super Bowl? Okay. [Detective] - How many drinks you think you might have had? Probably three. [Detective] - About three? Was it drinks or beers? Beers. I don't drink liquor. [Detective] - You just drink beer ... Okay. [Detective] - And at what time did you get there, you think? We got the Uber at ... ... you got my phone? [Detective] - No, they have it. I believe. [Detective] - You got it in there? [Detective] - You got the time that you got there? - Yes [Detective] - Okay, we could look ... [Detective] - So you had ... an Uber took you there ... [Detective] - So you didn't even drive there? - No. So the Uber took us ... Now, listen, we've learned if you drank one or two beers, don't drive because FHP is everywhere right now. No, I mean, we're that responsible. So, my niece, and ... [Detective] - What's your niece's name? [Detective 2] - How do you spell that? [Detective] - That's your niece, right? - Correct. [Detective] - She had left already? Her and Alex Krueger. Alex showed up later because he was working tonight. [Detective 2] - That's her boyfriend? - Yes. [Detective] - I think that's all on that for now. [Detective] - Let me, I'm going to do, I'm going to do the swipes, [Detective] - swabs on your hand [Detective] - for the GSR. All right. I don't deny that I shot a firearm. [Detective] - Do you remember what hand you shot it with? The right hand? [Detective] - Damn things [Detective 2] - You got it? - Yeah. [Detective 2] - Those are my size. [Detective] - So then you might have to do it then. [Detective] - I just got to get the little thing outta here. [Detective] - You get divorced? - Huh? [Detective] - Did you get divorced? We were never married. [Detective] - Oh, okay. I know we're amicable, I mean, but she's over in Sea Pines now. And as you notice, I didn't run ... didn't hide. I set my firearm down as soon as this situation was [Detective 2] - what kind of holster do you wear? [Detective 2] - You still have it with you. You all have my concealed carry permit somewhere. [Detective 2] - I didn't know that. No, you have it. [Detective] - Yeah, they probably got it. [Detective 2] - I'm gonna head on over to the back real quick. - Okay. Into this one? [Detective] - Yeah. Where is the recorder? [Detective] - Right here (points to chest). That's an electronic ring. [Detective] - What is it for, arthritis and stuff or ... No, it monitors all my body ... Biometrics. [Detective] - Really? Yeah. So it tells me when I need to exercise, when I need to sleep, [Detective] - Like a watch but, uh ... It goes to the phone. [Detective] - Oh okay. So, am I spending the night at Rick Ramsay's? [Detective] - I don't know how we're, [Detective] - This is what we're doing, and I'll be perfectly honest with you, [Detective] - We're going to put everything together. [Detective] - Your story, their story. It was one of me and probably five or six of them. [Detective] - And that's fine, we'll ... [Detective] - It goes to the state. We them what we're going to do, [Detective] - and they will make a decision of how they want to proceed. [Detective] - If they gonna take it to grand jury if they're gonna, you know, [Detective] - either way, we just we just and you know how we operate. [Detective] - You know me for a long time. [Detective] - I'm not going to bullshit you, and ... You know I'm not going anywhere. [Detective] - And I know that you got plenty of roots here. [Detective] - So, based on what the state says, we'll give'em both sides, [Detective] - and they will make a decision, and you'll know. [Detective] - So right now we're just putting everything together. [Detective] - You coming forward, you talking to us, we'll give them that [Detective] - and then they'll make the decision on how they want to proceed I'm not hiding what happened. [Detective] - No, I understand that. [Detective] - And you've always been upfront with me. [Detective] - With no problem. [Detective] - So we just put everything together, you know? [Detective] - And then we, we give it to them and it'll go from there. So here's what I would ask. If you wanna hold me for whatever reason, give me three or four days. Here's why - I'm a one-man shop. I've got to pay estimated taxes. I'm the only one that could do it. I've got to be at my office. I don't care if you come and sit with me, make sure I don't go anywhere, but I've got to be able to do that. And that's just ... [Detective] - I can't make that decision. [Detective] - And I'm going to tell you, I can't make that decision. [Detective] - That's not on me to make. [Detective] - But it's something that we'll have to talk to the state about, okay? [Detective] - And like I said, I've always been upfront with you. [Detective] - There's nothing to hide, you know? [Detective] - You know, I have to do my job as far as no matter what it is. [Detective] - But I'll have to. [Detective] - We've got to run everything through the state, through our boss. I know. My lawyer is Don Yates. [Detective] - Don Yates? - Yes. [Detective] - What's his number? 296-2261 is his office. You all have my cell phone. [Detective] - I could look him up. [Detective] - Where's his office at? 611 Eaton Street. [Detective] - Okay. Right across from the [Detective] - By the laundromat? - By the church. [Detective] - Okay. You know the Masonic building? Masonic parking lot? He's right next door next to that. [Detective] - Okay. Can I ask you how that fellow's doing? [Detective] - Right now, he's critical. Fuck. [Detective] - She's going to get a camera. We're gonna take some pictures of you [Detective] - and then, let me [Detective] - see... I've got that done. Would you consent to getting some buccal swabs from you for DNA? No. [Detective] - Okay, You already have my DNA, I think. Why would ... why do you need my DNA? [Detective] - Because when we do the case, when we do cases, we get DNA for everything. [Detective] - We just match up DNA in case we need it later on. [Detective] - For the case, we have it. [Detective] - So, I mean, it's not a big deal. [Detective] - If anything, if we do need it, we just, we'll get a search warrant. [Detective] - It's not a big deal [Detective] - at all. [Detective] - I ask in case the person wants to do it and get it done with. [Detective] - But if not, it's [Detective] - if we have to get it, we would just do paperwork. I mean, there was no blood, there was no fisticuffs. [Detective] - I don't think they did. [Detective] - He, uh, we're not going to do the buccal swabs. [Detective] - It's fine. [Detective] - Okay, [Detective] - Perfect. [Detective] - Just take a picture of that. Oh, you do have those? But you don't have my phone back yet. And where are my meds? [Detective] - As soon as they get the meds, we'll get them. [Detective] - Perfect. So I didn't shoot a gun. [Detective] - Sometimes it'll take a little bit of time. [Detective] - Let me go see if he has the other ones too. [Detective] - Give me a minute [Detective] - Alright, we got medications. [Detective] - We're gonna transport ... we're gonna take you to the hospital. Why to the hospital? [Detective] - Well, couple of things. [Detective] - In these investigations [Detective] - one of the things we've got to do is a blood draw. [Detective] - We're gonna transport you to the hospital. [Detective] - They're gonna do a blood draw. We got a warrant for a blood draw, okay. [Detective] - So, when we get there, [Detective] - we're going to give them the medication so the doctor can give you the prescribed medication. [Detective] - Because we're not doctors and we don't want to give ... But you know what I'm taking? You know what I'm taking? [Detective] - Wanna give me a list of them? I don't ... [Detective] - Clindamycin, it's for [Detective] - antibiotic? - Yeah. [Detective] - That's a powerful antibiotic. Yeah. Oh, yeah, I know that. [Detective] - A few weeks ago, I had to stop taking them. Oh, did you start bleeding ... [Detective] - No, but my stomach was fucked up. You gotta eat. [Detective] - Yeah, they told me to eat yogurt. [Detective] - They told me to eat yogurt, I was eating, like, four yogurts a day, and it still tore me up. [Detective] - So we're going to send you out there to do that, and then we're going to give [Detective] - them the medication. [Detective] - Sergeant just gave them the medications. [Detective] - We're going to give them medications to [Detective] - to give you. So they could administer the medications. [Detective] - Every medication you told us is, we got a bag ... [Detective] - So they could give you what you need for medications. Yeah, it should be like four of them. [Detective] - Um, before we go, [Detective] - Just one question I want to ask you because [Detective] - Once we get everything and we go to the state ... [Detective] - When the guy came, you said the guy came towards you, [Detective] - Do you remember anything or any type of threatening things [Detective] - that he told you, or anything that he made ... actions? [Detective] - I know you said he grabbed something ... He was coming to aggressively ... get me. He was getting taller than I was. [Detective] - Did he show anything like, do you remember anything like [Detective] - hand maneuvers, hand things? No. It was just that fast. [Detective] - Okay. All right. [Detective] - So I think you covered it all. We'll take you out there [Detective] - to get that done. We've got to do what we've got to do. [Detective] - Also ... But I've asked again to speak to my attorney, so ... [Detective] - That's fine, then I won't ask you anything else. [Detective] - If you want to talk to your attorney. [indistinct] [Detective] - If that's what, and that's fine, that's totally your right to do it. [Detective] - We're going to go ahead and get you to the hospital. [Detective] - And once you get done with what you got to do, we'll get you, you can give him a call. [Detective] - So we'll get we'll get it done. [Detective] - Right now, we're not going to ask you anything else. [Detective] - But we do have a warrant. [Detective] - We do have a warrant for the blood, which is signed by a judge. [Detective] - So that'll be done. [Detective 2] - Do me a favor, can you sign and date this for me? [Detective 2] - Just shows that obviously, you're the person that drew that picture. I don't have my glasses on. [Detective 2] - That's fine. I can read you, you want the cheaters again? What is it now, the 11th? [Detective 2] - Today's the 13th. [Detective 2] - Thank you. [Detective 2] - And I will take that. What does the gunshot residue show? [Detective 2] - What's that? Gunshot residue. [Detective] - That right now is not showing anything. It's negative. [Detective] - Yeah. And it could happen. Sometimes these kits could show [Detective] - negative. [Detective] - Let me give this to the gentleman at front. You took pictures of it, right? [Detective 2] - I did. [Detective] - I'm going to put this back in your wallet. May I put it back into where it goes? [Detective] - Yes. [Detective] - All right, Preston. [Detective] - Just so you know, [Detective] - I'm always upfront with you [Detective] - in everything we do. [Detective] - The hospital had contacted us a little bit ago. [Detective] - I just talked to the detective that was out there [Detective] - and the kid did pass away. [Detective] - So I just want to let you know that, alright. [Detective] - Um, fortunate thing, [Detective] - But I got to tell you. [Detective] - And so you don't hold anything back, but [Detective] - we're going to do the blood draw. [Attorney] - Also going to be the interaction between Mr. Brewer and the other three gentlemen that provoked the incident that exactly led up to the actual shooting, On February 25th, 2023, Brewer entered a plea of not guilty to murder charges. At a separate hearing, he claimed that he shot Hughes in self-defense and that the shooting was justified under Florida's Stand Your Ground law. The Stand Your Ground law provides that a person in their dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle has no duty to retreat and may use, or threaten to use, deadly force if they reasonably believe such force is necessary to prevent imminent death, great bodily harm, or the commission of a forcible felony. Hughes was unarmed and there was no evidence of any prior interactions between them that evening. Prosecutors state Brewer drew his gun from about 40 feet away and advanced on Garrett. Prosecutors concluded that Brewer engaged in a senseless point blank shooting. Brewer is currently being held in the Monroe County Jail without bond pending trial.
