Her family moved to Utah in 1985, and stayed there, until relocating to Ohio in 2004. She has lived in Ohio ever since, and most recently resided in Medina. Rachel was once married, and had three daughters from that relationship. She graduated from Bonneville High School. Afterward, she earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Cuyahoga Community College. She subsequently found work as a dental hygienist. In 2011, she met and entered into a relationship with Shawn Guillereault. 48-year-old Shawn Guillereault was born on October 18th, 1974. He is a veteran of the US Army, and was honorably discharged. Afterward, in 2002, Shawn earned an Associate of Applied Science degree from Washington State Community College. He was married the following year, and they had two children. Shawn continued to work as an army recruiter until 2003. Following his military career, he worked in water treatment services, most recently at Chem-Aqua Inc. As of 2019, he was in a seven-year relationship with Rachel, and they shared a house on Stockbridge Drive in Medina. Saturday, May 18th, 2019 seemed like a fairly typical day in the Montville community. It was sunny, and slightly warmer than usual, at nearly 80 degrees. From outward appearances, all seemed in order at the well-maintained home on the 4700 block of Stockbridge Drive. Shawn and Rachel decided they were due to have some fun that evening, so they took the kids out for a few games of bowling. Shawn had a few drinks, and was described as a little tipsy, but did not appear to be out of sorts by the time the children went to bed. But, as the sun went down, long-simmering tensions arose. Shawn and Rachel had a disagreement, which erupted into a heated verbal altercation, as they had done many times before. However, this time, it escalated into violence. While the children were asleep upstairs, Shawn lost control of his emotions. He suddenly reached for a handgun, aimed, and fired a round into Rachel's right temple. The bullet remained lodged in the lower part of her brain. However, Shawn's reign of terror was not over. He waited for an undisclosed period, and then went to an upstairs bedroom, where a teenage girl had been spending the night. Shawn entered the room, and attempted to sexually assault the teenager. According to police, she was able to fight him off, and at some point, talk him down. When he briefly left that room to use the bathroom, she was able to escape. The teenager fled down the streets of Montville, without clothing. It was 43 minutes past midnight. After running barefoot for a half mile, she arrived at a McDonald's restaurant on Wooster Pike Road. She came across employees who were closing for the night. The teen told the workers that a man named Shawn Guillereault attempted to sexually assault her at a house on Stockbridge Drive before she was able to escape. She said Rachel was shot, and she believed her to be dead. The restaurant worker drove the girl toward Cleveland Clinic, Medina Hospital for medical treatment. The McDonald's employee called 911 while driving to alert them of what had just happened. He told the dispatcher he believed there were other children in the home, ages 12 and 15. As the dispatcher was sorting information from multiple calls, and routing officers, another 911 call came in, approximately 17 minutes after the McDonald's employee called. - [Automated Voice] May 19th, 2019. Officers shouted demands at Shawn, but he refused all orders to surrender. As police got to within several feet of him, he ran into the house and shut the door. Police knew he was armed, so they retreated from the home, requested backup units, activated the Medina County SWAT team, and established a perimeter around the house. Moments later, negotiators arrived and attempted to contact Shawn, but had no luck reaching him. Initially, officers focused their attention on the children, since there were conflicting reports from the shooter and others, that Rachel was already dead. For these reasons, according to police, officers could not enter the garage and take her to a hospital until just before 3:00 AM. At 1:43 AM, the children's precise location was confirmed. Apparently, they had barricaded themselves in a rear bedroom. One hour later, the children were safely removed from the home by SWAT members using ladders. The children were physically unharmed, and released to the care of family members. At this point, negotiators were still unsuccessful in reaching Shawn. Finally, at 2:52 AM, Rachel was extracted from the house, and flown by medical helicopter to an Akron hospital. She was placed on life support, but died from her injuries the following day. At 3:44 AM, a SWAT robot was deployed to search the residence. 45 minutes later, Shawn Guillereault was confirmed dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was lying in the basement with ammunition in his pocket. Police discovered multiple firearms throughout the home, including three shotguns. Apparently, local police were no strangers to the home on Stockbridge Drive, A 2014 affidavit shows Rachel filed a criminal complaint against Shawn for allegedly sexually assaulting one of her relatives. Shawn was accused of asking a teenager for oral sex. The report also noted that Shawn said he wanted to shoot Rachel in the head. At that time, she told police Shawn was an alcoholic, and she was a victim of domestic abuse. Additionally, she mentioned she did not have the financial resources to find another place for her and her kids to live. After a police investigation, the matter was referred to the county prosecutor. Ultimately, the case was dropped in Medina Municipal Court due to insufficient evidence. Rachel was referred to social services for help with the domestic situation, but there was no follow up. According to detectives, a domestic violence incident between Guillereault and Rachel occurred in December, 2018, and was investigated, but no action had yet been taken. In addition, the Akron Beacon Journal reported another of Rachel's relatives being sexually assaulted by Guillereault in December of 2018, but that matter was also dropped. According to police, all of the children in the Stockbridge Drive household were successfully placed with family members. Medina County Coroner Lisa Neradicke stated that Rachel was kept on life support, so that her organs could be surgically removed, and transported to critically ill patients. Through organ donation, The family hoped that, perhaps, some good could come out of this tragic and senseless situation. (drumbeats)
