Chad his 34-year-old wife and their three young boys 7-year-old Clayton 4-year-old Hunter and 3-year-old Chase also living with them was Miss doorman's teenage daughter from a previous relationship the dman children were full of vibrant energy and were exceptionally close they enjoyed the company of their beloved dog loved baseball and supported one another through thick and thin on June 14th the boys were in their happy place on the baseball diamond after wrapping up their latest game Kristen Bennett the president of the local Youth Baseball League recalled an observation she made as the Dorman family prepared to depart like any caring father she said she watched as Chad instructed the boys to buckle up their car seats minding their safy it was an ordinary unremarkable moment a scene that Blended seamlessly into the fabric of countless families on the Ballfield however a far less idyllic fate awaited this seemingly everyday family on Thursday June 15th 2023 amidst cloudy skies and temperatures hovering around 81° life in New Richmond followed its usual suburban American routine however this day would prove to be far from ordinary when in the late afternoon a teenage girl was observed sprinting down a road with fear etched on her face her desperate cries for help piercing the air her goal was to reach the safety of a nearby Firehouse seeking Refuge from an unimaginable threat at precisely 4:18 p.m. a concerned passer by driving along the road witnessed a teenage girl running and overheard her yelling my stepfather is killing everyone the driver immediately dialed to the tragedy the boy's mother was also located outside the residence bearing a gunshot wound to her hand bravely sustained while trying to protect her children recognizing the urgency of the situation immediate medical attention was provided and she was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment during the subsequent investigation detectives learned that Dorman first killed four-year-old Hunter by shooting him twice while inside the family home at that point the 7-year-old Clayton ran into a field behind the house but was chased and shot from behind by his father doorman approached the wounded boy and fired off two more rounds finally three-year-old Chase was the last to be killed after he was ripped from his mother's arms and shot at close range community members were stunned I'm shocked to be honest with you I just we moved here 6 years ago and uh the place is great and and you know new Richmond's coming up and you just hate to see anything like this anywhere all of a sudden I hear Boom Boom and at like five more I'm like that's seven shots that's shots like there's no way so I was freaking out like this before I got and everything and I just I don't know man I just saw before that I saw two cars right here on this street Zoom as fast as too many possible like something's going down according to a press release by The Claremont County Sheriff's Office dman was charged with three counts of aggravated murder after confessing to executing his three boys with a rifle doorman was transported to the Claremont County jail after being interviewed by detectives and was held without bond the following day he appeared at the Claremont County Municipal Court for an initial arraignment state of har Chad Dorman 2023 c1975 this matter is before the court today for purposes of bond hearing Mr [ __ ] you were here on behalf of Mr Dorman Mr Dei Mr gas on behalf of the state of Ohio Mr [ __ ] as the bond go ahead sir um as V he is 32 years old he was orally married is employed um he indicates that his relatives sign at this time we would submit to the court about 75,000 condition be thank you thank you Mr good job markby clar County prosecutor on behalf of the State uh we uh at this point I'm going to let uh Mr G uh handle the bond for hour a half thank morning judge good morning judge uh we've got law enforcement with us here today our office has been involved uh lots of people our have been involved with law enforcement throughout yesterday afternoon evening all the way through this morning and the facts I have for you at this point are as follows the trauma that this man has inflicted on his family the Community Law Enforcement First Responders and all of the rest of us who have any idea what's going on here is unspeakable there's been a full admission in this case judge the case is still new uh we're still discovering facts but the evil horror of what we know is impossible to process in an act of just incomprehensible cruelty the father that stand before you lined up as three young boys and he executed them in his own home with a rifle they were ages 3 4 and seven Jud in an act of desperation to save her children the mother at some point grabbed the gun that father was wielding to attempt to protect them we know that one of the boys was able to flee into a field Mo a home and again we know from his admission father hunted that boy down drug him back to the property and executed him in front of witnesses the mother was shot through the hand in her attempt to protect her children judge I asked the court setting this bond to just begin to imagine Their Fear this was the man that every day they woke up looking to for protection love guidance in all things man they trust more than any other person on Earth person they rely upon to keep them safe from harm he was their world he was their guardian and he executed them in Cold Blood we know that from his admission by that same admission judge he has committed one of the most monstrous Craven cowardly acts that will ever be our Misfortune soon to make things even more disturbing judge this was no halfhazard act Again by his own admission he planned the events of this day this did not happen on a whim he's confessed what I believe is the worst crime at least I hope that I'll see in my lifetime I hope it's the worst fact pattern that ever comes before this court judge it's important for the court to know and the bond we're going to request today for the court to understand kma County deputies Monro Township firing EMS and other First Responders bravely respond to the scene where they don't know what's going on they did not not know what they're facing and they come into a a scene that no one can ever be prepared for no law enforcement training no training of any kind prepares your for it's easy to forget that these are men and women with families children feelings emotions they're not some automaton performing a delegated function for people they were required to give CPR to gunshot children three four and seveny old children they held these boys in their arms knowing knowing there was nothing they could do to save them how long do those scars last what day you wake up from that and you're healed how do you unsee such an abomination Bond factors this court needs to consider today are set forth in criminal rule 46 nature and circumstances the CH crime charged and specifically whether the defendant used or had access to a weapon including the seriousness of the offense it's the most serious offense that we have on the books judge this is this is it you can't commit a more serious offense so the nature of the crime charge is the worst crime that can be charged did he have access to a weapon yes yes obviously he did the weight of the evidence against the defendant at this point judge we stand here with a full admission of the defendant that also goes to the confirmation the defendant's identity and Witnesses on scene did see at least part of what happened next the court is to consider the likelihood this person would return the court if a bond were issued again this is the most heinous crime with the most severe penalty under the law that we presented the grand jury that alone would be a a major factor in discouraging a person from availing himself to Discord or any other and the thought to flee and the likelihood of flight is great in the state's opinion the danger he poses to the community is the factor that this court cons consider and I think with the facts in front of your judge we can't name a person that poses a greater threat to the community as his prior record goes judged as fairly minimal he was charged with domestic violence in 2010 he is not to my knowledge on probation Community Control judge the facts of this case are hopefully like no other we will ever see when this case gets indicted in the court of common pleas I am certain that a no bond hearing will be held and I would hope that would be granted but at this point this Jun we're going to ask this court to issue a bond we've never asked for before I'm going to ask for a bond of $20 million I hope I never need to request such a bond again thank you uh date for preliminary hearing date for the preliminary hearing judge is 626 no objection the preliminary hearing will be set for June 26th at 1 p.m. this point in time Bond's going to be set in the amount of 20 million cash or shity anything else at this time Mr Gast no Jud Mr anything further nothing at this time thank you all rise words and reset one week after this shooting a Claremont County grand jury returned additional charges in a 21c count indictment against Dorman including nine counts of aggravated murder eight counts of kidnapping and four counts of felonious assault according to the indictment Dorman committed the murders with prior calculation and design confessing to planning for several months Dorman pleaded not guilty to all charges perhaps recognizing the futility of such a request Dorman's attorney chose not to pursue Bond after the grand jury proceeding Claremont County prosecutor Mark Tuli made clear his intentions for prosecuting Dorman first and foremost I want to start out by expressing the deepest sympathy I have for this family for this unspeakable tragedy um we do have I can't go into a whole lot TRS all right because this is a death penalty case and my goal is to have this man EX Ed for slaughtering these three little boys um it is it is let me try to figure out a way to put this it is an incomprehensible AC of horror that he perpetrated on his family so again that is my most important Focus right now is to ensure that they are protected and they are safe and my hope and wish prayer is that someday we will be able to find peace uh but factually I've said what I said on the record and I'm going to stick with that why was it with how complicated the death penalty is in Ohio right now um and how much extra work of adds to your office why was it important for you to seek this I'll let the facts be for themselves you slaughtered his three children in the most brutal fashion you can imagine as I mentioned Court um the extra work is no extra work at all it's what we do this merits our Attention our devotion and our effort thoughts on that initial amount guilty please that that has to be done Dorman is next scheduled to be in court on July 5th 2023 at 11:00 a.m. for a pre-trial hearing weeks after Dorman lined up his three little boys and shot and killed them with a rifle one obvious question lingers why at present authorities have yet to establish a motive for the slains according to his father Keith dman who spoke with the New York Post recently he and his wife are still trying to comprehend how his son could have murdered his own children when asked directly he said he just snapped there was something going on in his life that he couldn't handle no more I can't talk to him they aren't letting me talk to him so I don't have any answers he probably hit a lot of stuff from me delving into Chad Dorman's background we can examine the public record for potential Clues his criminal history includes a second deegree misdemeanor charge of criminal damaging at 18 years old that case was dismissed after he paid $1,136 in restitution in 2010 he was charged with domestic violence for allegedly choking his father but the case was dismissed later that year when the prosecuting witness failed to appear he has also amassed approximately a dozen traffic infractions and violations primarily relating to speeding according to an article by the local news Outlet W KRC they did some digging into Dorman's public record they filed an open records request with the Claremont County communications center which revealed that police had been dispatched to the Dorman resident twice since 2020 excluding the most recent incident unfortunately no details regarding the nature of those prior visits were provided additionally W KRC filed a records request with children's Protective Services to inquire about any referrals requests complaints or calls associated with Chad dman or his address the response received was there are no records responsive to your request lastly a search of the county Auditor's website showed that Dorman purchased his home a converted manufactured home on 3 acres of land for $75,000 and the family was up to date with property tax payments when we last covered this case a little more than a year ago Chad doorman had entered a not guilty plea to all charges there have been some noteworthy developments since then at the time of this update Dorman was due to appear in court on August 5th 2024 he faces a Litany of serious charges including nine counts of aggravated murder eight counts of kidnapping and four counts of felonious assault among the state's key pieces of direct evidence was an alleged confession made by Dorman in a July 2023 Court filing the state claimed that during an audio and video recorded interview Dorman admitted he had been thinking about shooting his sons for at least 8 months he allegedly stated that the burden of these thoughts had been so overwhelming that he had not slept for three or 4 days before the murders the state cited multiple statements made by Dorman such as I did it take me to jail and I shouldn't have shot redacted and them which they considered tantamount to a confession however during a hearing in February 2024 this happened you did not read all the Miranda rights on stage exhibit three did you on your card word for word no one of the detectives who interrogated Dorman testified on the witness stand that he didn't fully recite Dorman's Miranda rights before questioning him following this admission Dorman's defense attorneys motioned to suppress the confession they argued that since the detective did not properly inform Dorman of his rights all statements made during the interrogation were inadmissible as evidence in the trial according to the defense's motion just minutes after the questioning began Dorman told detectives I'll wait for a lawyer I really don't know give me a couple of days and let me talk to a lawyer so I can get nice good answers the defense contended this was a clear request for legal counsel while prosecutors and detectives countered it was too vague after a nearly 4-Hour hearing judge Richard fench ruled that Dorman's statement clearly and unequivocally indicated his desire for a lawyer further the judge concluded the detective was required to stop questioning Dorman immediately after Dorman said give me a couple of days I can talk to a lawyer to get nice good answers and further violated his rights by continuing to question him afterward ultimately all statements made by Dorman during the interrogation were tossed by all accounts this was a huge win for the defense 12 days after the judge's ruling they changed Dorman's plea to Not Guilty by reason of insanity a hearing was scheduled for August 5th 2024 to address a motion related to this plea however the defense withdrew that motion when in a surprising turn of events a hearing was held 3 days earlier instead this unexpected hearing occurred because the defense and prosecution had reached an agreement [Music] so the Judge Al St start Ling will talk kind questions stand all [Music] right please seated good afternoon we are here on state of Ohio versus Chad Dorman case number 2023 CR 407 Mr Dorman is present with Council Mr Meers and Mr HS the State's president represented by through Mr call the County prosecutor Laura Baron Allen first assistant [Music] assistant Katherine terpstra and Mr Clay Tharp and we're here this afternoon uh because I have been advis that a uh plea agreement has been reached in this matter and initially Mr dby if you would represent if you would State on the record uh the nature of the plea agreement that has been entered into uh uh in this matter yes thank you judge uh it is a uh an agreement your H between the state and the defense the the defendant will enter a guilty ple to count one aggravated murder that involves uh the killing of Clayton the defend will enter a guilty plea to count two aggravated murder that involves the killing of Hunter guilty plea to count three aggravated murder involving the killing of Chase will also enter guilty pleas to count 18 felonious assault that involves the actions he took against Alex Steen and he will enter a guilty ple to count 20 bonus assault for the uh actions he took against for nor the all the additional recommendation your honor is that count one will be life without parole consecutive to count two which will be life without parole consecutive to count three which will be life without parole consecutive to count 18 which be 8 to 12 consecutive to count 20 which is 8 to 12 years in prison 33-year-old Chad Dorman pled guilty to three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table this means he'll spend the rest of his life Behind Bars without any chance of parole after the hearing prosecutor tlby spoke with local reporters he explained that a major reason for the state's decision to offer a plea deal was to spare Dorman's ex-wife and stepdaughter from the ordeal of a trial where they'd have to testify and relive their horrifying experiences he also emphasized that the victims were consulted and fully supported the plea Arrangement despite these statements he was asked by a reporter to explain why he changed his stance after previously insisting that his goal was the death penalty you were adamant early on that you were going to seek the death penalty in this Cas that's right that's right people are not going to understand that a man who killed his three sons is not going to face the death penalty the public is going to have a hard time understanding that well I'm happy to answer all these questions any question like this initially uh and we indicted him with aggravating circumstances for the death penalty uh and he will die in prison will he die sooner then he would die otherwise uh the last three individuals in Claremont County would receive the death sentence uh Jerry Lawson around 1988 he died in 2015 after 27 years in prison Michael Webb who committed an arson back in 89 killed his three-year-old son he died in prison in 2022 after 31 years on death row so these things aren't a certainty as to when execution may occur one thing I know is a certainty is that Chad Dorman will die in prison in a seminal contribution to the field of Psychiatry Dr Philip Resnik a renowned forensic psychiatrist conducted an in-depth investigation involving 131 cases of parents killing their offspring the findings of this comprehensive research were subsequently published in the American Journal of psychiatry in 1969 Dr Resnik was able to identify five primary motives for filicide these motives include altruistic fatal maltreatment spousal Revenge unwanted child and acutely psychotic altruistic filicide occurs when a parent believes that the child is subjected to unbearable suffering in an excessively cruel world fatal maltreatment involves instances where abuse or neglect leads to the child's death even if it was not the intended outcome spousal Revenge killings involve the deliberate Act of harming a domestic partner by targeting and harming their children indirectly the motives of unwanted child and acutely psychotic are self-explanatory sadly it is evident that Chad Dorman has joined the ranks of the so-called family annihilators the horrific dorant murders leave us grappling with profound sadness and an overwhelming sense of disbelief with the motive behind this heinous act still unknown and as the case continues to unfold new information is emerging at a rapid Pace bringing with it a sense of anticipation for much needed answers in light of these developments our Collective hope is that the truth will be revealed and Justice will be swiftly served
