Now he coming back at me again, or whatever, you know what I'm saying? Now he goes to start swinging, or whatever. Now, with this situation, okay, now he goes to start swinging. I was just going to show what I was doing, I'll back up. But he goes to swing, boom, boom, boom. I'm backing up, you know what I'm saying? Now, I was going to call it, like I said, I was going to call it fire upon his ass, or whatever. But the thing is is, when he's sitting there doing that, he's still trying to steadily attack. And I'm just like, bro, like stop, stop, stop, or whatever, you know, like just stop, or whatever. There's no reason for this [ __ ] you know what I'm saying? And that's when the shots ended up happening. This one starts in a parking lot in Inverness, Florida. Broad daylight, middle of the morning with multiple witnesses nearby. I I will, bro. I will. What is the address of the emergency? Um uh Papa Joe's. You know where Papa Joe's is? Right across from Caliber's. Papa Joe's? Yes, Papa Joe's. Now, there's been a shooting. Please, can you hurry? >> Okay, how many people are involved? Just one. Hurry, hurry, hurry. >> Where are they at? Where's the shooter at? Bro. Can you tell me where the shooter is? Bro, bro, don't don't grab Can you hear me? I I don't have a problem with you, but don't you grab me like that. Can you hear me? Yes. Okay, where is the shooter? He's He's standing here in front of me. Okay, give me a description of him. Do you know his name? >> [music] >> Yeah, he he owns the barber shop. The shooter owns the barber shop? They're on their way. None of these questions are delaying the response, okay? >> [music] >> Can you tell me what happened? I I have no idea. I was walking up and the two of them had an argument and um one was saying he he he did Okay. He did whatever. Then the other one pulled out a gun and then that was that, dude. I I don't know. >> Okay. On May 28th, 2024, Citrus County deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a shopping plaza on Highway 44 West. When they arrived, they found 33-year-old Trask Cordale Johnson lying on the ground in the parking lot. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Johnson was rushed to the hospital clinging to life. Deputies quickly made contact with Dwyane Ross Jr. He identified himself as the shooter at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. As investigators began piecing together what happened, several witnesses were already telling a largely consistent story. This didn't begin as a shooting. It started as a confrontation. According to those witnesses, Dwyane and Trask arrived in separate vehicles, parked close with their driver side doors facing each other, and almost immediately got into a verbal dispute that turned physical. There was pushing, shoving, and a struggle. Then, witnesses observed Dwyane retrieve a firearm from his vehicle and fire multiple rounds at Trask. No witness reported seeing the victim armed, and investigators found no evidence at the scene that he displayed a weapon. So, at this point, detectives have a severely wounded victim, multiple eyewitnesses, and the suspect who openly admits he pulled the trigger. The central question now is whether this was an unjustified killing or lawful self-defense. But before we look at how detectives answered that question, we need to examine the lives behind the headlines. Officers learned this wasn't some random confrontation between a suspect and a victim. These were two fathers and business owners. >> [music] >> Men whose social media pages were mostly filled with smiling photos of them with their children. Both had their flaws, but in a moment where pride and anger overrode judgment, a personal dispute spiraled into senseless violence. [music] With those stakes in mind, detectives sit down with Dwayne and at least initially seem willing to hear him out. Dwayne agrees to talk, and once he starts, he's hard to stop. Do you understand these the rights I just explained to you? Yes, sir. Okay. Having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to us? Yes, sir. Answer my questions. Okay. So, what what what can you tell me about what happened today up there? So, you say you run the barber shop? >> I own the barber shop. You own the barber shop. >> Yes, sir. Who else who else works at barber shop? >> Um I own I co-own with uh There's a John John up there as well, too. Okay. Um and then I just got one employee. Okay. Other than that. And you guys you guys do all the work cutting and obviously I don't I don't go to the barber shop that often. Correct. But we do the beard, though. You know. No, I take that back. Now, I understand. Well, yes, sir. That's what I do for a living, man. So, were you working this morning? I was not working this morning. >> Okay. So, what brought you up there today? Okay. So, today I was um I was coming back from Ocala, from Marion County. I had to drop him off. my son cuz I had to take him to go get back to daycare. I have another child, so I got two girls, which I have in the house, my 14 and 11 years old. I had to take my 2-year-old to Ocala to the Kid USA. As I was coming back from there, um I was on the phone with John explaining to him that I had got a threat. That's why I was Do you all know if you all got cell phone tonight? You all got my cell phone? We Okay. So, I told him whatever that I had got a threat because um Let's see here. Let me make sure I'm exactly right. At like 1:23 um I forget what day exactly it was, but like I said, it's in my phone still. I had got a text message saying that um we can go thot for thot or I can spray that [ __ ] up. You're [ __ ] with Basically, you're [ __ ] with the wrong woman. You know? So, I I get the message at 1:23. I check it at 3:00 when I go to go to the drink takes piss or whatever. And then I was calling back, "Who is this?" And I said, "It's sad that you are trying to shoot up my home knowing that my kids are in here over a female. Leave it alone." So, then I whatchamacallit I was nervous all weekend. I left and took my kids to Orlando. Um we whatchamacallit we come back. So, let me stop you real quick. What When was that text? Um that I I can't confirm confirm the whole day cuz today is what Today is Tuesday. >> You know what day day is Tuesday? Today Yeah, uh I started talking I started figuring out when the girl saw me cuz she said she had to go to work. I think it might have been I think it might have been Sunday. Yeah, it was Sunday cuz I didn't leave cuz I had my son. So, it had to been Sunday and then Monday Yeah. So, Sunday it had to happen. Um just to make sure cuz she had like I said, I'm talking to her on RN. So, she worked night shift or whatever, you know. You said you went to Orlando. Yeah, but that was before So, I didn't go to So, during that time I That was Orlando I already went to. Okay. I already went to Orlando or whatever cuz I'm thinking about it because the it's cuz they Someone had got mad that I had ended up watching um Denise. Mhm. So, it was the niece of Trash Johnson as a matter of fact. Um the little girl was in the middle of the street or whatever, you know. We out there chit-chatting and having a conversation. I'm just trying to tell him like, "Hey, blah blah blah, you know, I'll watch her or whatever." And um I ended up watching the girl that night or whatever. Uh apparently Trash got mad about the situation, you know. And I'm just I'm going to just say everything he said. Like, "Oh, you know, he's a [ __ ] watching someone else's child Um and then you also let that child be there at the house with someone that she don't know. Then I explained to them that I have two daughters or whatever. She's in the front room. She's perfectly fine and safe. You can FaceTime and do whatever you want to. I just wanted the child to have a good home or somewhere to sleep for that night until she got off work to pick her up pick the child back up at 8:00 a.m. So then back to the story now. So she gets the child at 8:00 a.m. You know, she gets ridiculed for the whole nine. I don't hear everything that she's talking about. But then today after I dropped them off from daycare, I get a call after uh on being on there saying a text message saying that um What is she telling me? She was saying uh Oh um So apparently you was uh [ __ ] another girl. She's like apparently you was [ __ ] another girl and they got you on the ring camera. Uh When was this because you were with the girl named Liz? And I was like, that has nothing to do with you. So I'm not even going to even talk about that. Like I just let that situation go or whatever, you know? So then I go to call um Trash God because I wanted to find out who was the one that said that you were going to shoot up my house. I wanted to know. I'm Hey bro, what's going on? Oh man, don't [ __ ] call me. Da da da. I'm like, bro I'm calling to find out answers. Like I'm not calling you on no like tough guy stuff or no hype stuff. And I can even show that to you on my phone because I clearly they text me and then after he hung up and said, "Hey man, I'm not trying to cause no issue. I just wanted to know, you know what I'm saying? Like what's going on? Why are you even put my name in your mouth about this situation when I'm only dating this girl? I have nothing to do with you guys. You know what I'm saying? We live on the same street. We see each other. I cut your hair. But I have nothing to do with you. Other than those things, I would never talk to you. You know? So we leaving it at that. So I get ready to drive home. As I'm pulling into the uh Starbucks because they got the new Starbucks. That's where I live at behind there. I see him and he opens up the door or whatever and was like, "Oh man, you a [ __ ] ass I told you once the first time that you need to keep that little pee-pee shooter on you and you need to what's we call it yeah, I told you the first time you need to keep that little pee-pee shooter on you and the state protect me." I was like, "Huh?" I was like, "That's weird." Which actually I got that in the text message, too, because this is not the first time he didn't threaten me. And I guess he yeah, he literally threatened me over a female, you know? So, I got it in the text message or whatever and I was like, "Damn, bro, that's kind of messed up with you being, you know, a convicted felon saying those type of things and I'm not even trying to be on that level. I'm just trying to have a simple conversation with you." So, then he was like, "Well, [ __ ] it. Come and meet me at the I Spot place, which is where he owns and then I'll go over there and I'll be done with this." I said, "Okay, bet. I will come over there." I get ready to get out of the truck. As you see, my truck was on a 45 angle. As I get out of the truck, he jumps out and immediately approaches me or whatever and I start running his mouth and I'm like, "Bro, I'm not even trying to hear that." Now, he don't know that I got my buddy one of my owners on the phone. Mhm. Just cuz I already knew for a witness. I said, "John, please stay on the phone." But I put John on the uh the mute, so that he couldn't hear if John were to say something. So, John was on the [clears throat] phone and the phone the phone's in the seat the entire time. I'm like, "Bro, I'm just trying to get answers on why you, you know, speaking about this and that." Then, "Fuck you, bro, you a [ __ ] ass this that and the other. I'll punch you in your [ __ ] face." Now, you know my mom's standing up? So, what's up, John? Okay, that's what I want to say. So, I'm standing like this facing him, you know what I'm saying? He says he he he's like, "I'll punch you in your [ __ ] face." And goes and rears up. You know what I'm saying? Now, I grab him, I get a hold of his necklace and all this [ __ ] this [ __ ] breaking and the whole nine or whatever. Now, after that, I black out. I don't know really too much what happened after that because he he He and says, "Oh, I'm going to what's we call it I'm going to [ __ ] go get something for you." So, I see buddy literally reaching into his car, reaching on the back of his [ __ ] truck, or whatever. Now, he coming back at me again, or whatever, you know what I'm saying? Now, he goes to start swinging, or whatever. Now, with this situation, okay. Now, he goes to start swinging. I was just going to show what I was doing. I backed up. But, he goes to swing, boom, boom, boom. I'm backing up, you know what I'm saying? Now, I wasn't going to call it, like I said, I wasn't going to fire upon his ass, or whatever. But, the thing is is when he's sitting there doing that, he's still trying to steadily attack. And I'm just like, bro, like stop, stop, stop, or whatever, you know, like just stop, or whatever. There's no reason for this [ __ ] you know what I'm saying? And that's when the shots end up happening, you know, from there. And then I saw one of the clients, which is the guy that was in the blue shirt, cuz he was going to get a haircut from Chris. He comes up and was telling me, "Oh, man, you know, like just chill out, chill out, chill out, whatever, blah, blah, blah." And I'm like, "No, man." And then like my firearm goes to jam, you know what I'm saying? I My firearm My firearm goes to jam. First thing I go to do is just go right back in the training and declare it, so that way I could be able to defeat the threat, or whatever. And I'm literally sitting there doing that. I put fire off one last shot. It jams again. I say, "Fuck it, you know, leave it alone, man." He's still sitting there The dude still kind of mad at me and agitated, but he don't even know what what's led up to that, you know what I'm saying? Like, he's mad. I'm like, "Bro, I'm trying to show you and tell you I've been threatened this whole time, or whatever, saying I'm going to get shot at." And if someone goes and reaches into their vehicle to go and act upon it, or I don't know what you got. Now, I smoke with him every day. See, this is another thing a lot of people don't know. Every morning, me and me and him sit with each other and smoke, you know what I'm saying? He's a complete felon. You don't And I don't know what type of [ __ ] he got, cuz like I said, he said he wanted to he wanted to fire upon me. And then also, I got the text messages where they were saying they wanted to shoot up my house. But, um I don't know if you got a a knife, a gun, or whatever the case is in your [ __ ] you know? I do know that you do have knives, and I do know that you have guns, but I didn't know. So, like I said, you reaching in there to go grab something, I don't know what you got going on. And like I literally tried to divert the whole time. I'm sitting there saying, "Bro, I am trying to talk and have a conversation with you, man to man." That's why I post I sent it in a text message to tell you this, but immediately you Man, go call these [ __ ] [ __ ] Man, go call these [ __ ] [ __ ] And he used to stand there threatening me, telling me you finna hurt me and [ __ ] punch me in my [ __ ] face. That's not finna happen. You know what I'm saying? So, I stood my ground. Dawan is framing the shooting as self-defense, but details in his account begin to raise questions. Early on, he downplays his relationship with Trask, saying he had little to do with him beyond cutting his hair. Minutes later, however, he describes daily social contact, a much different picture. It's the kind of inconsistency detectives notice because it can bear on motive, credibility, and whether Dawan is minimizing more than just the relationship. So, he goes in and and parks in front of his shop? >> Yeah, he backs in and parks right in front of Well, technically, this is Tattoo Shop. Okay. And then I I I saw where your truck was parked. You got the silver Dodge. Silver Dodge Ram, yes. So, was he getting out of his truck? Was he out of his truck when you pulled in? Yeah, he was getting out of his truck. I I don't know like if I opened my door first or whatever to be exact, but I know that he like I said, he came up to me, you know what I'm saying? And I was like, "Oh, shit." You know, like cuz it was just mad aggressive right off rip. When he when he came at you, you were already out of your truck? Yeah, like I don't know if I was out of the truck halfway or just in it in all the way. Like I know that he came up to me. The door was open, though. My door was was open, you know what I'm saying? And that was it cuz I ain't finna lie to you. I think I went out looking at him in the eye like how I'm looking at you. I did a at him and see like, he looked down, you know what I'm saying? Because he's been in my truck plenty of times. I keep my firearm literally on the door wall, you know what I'm saying? So, he ended up looking down and then that's when that's when that [ __ ] escalated there, where he was just like, "Oh, I'll do that." I'm like, "Bro, this is just Just because you see it, it's it was in the it was in a holster and everything. All safety and the whole nine, you know what I'm saying? What kind of What kind of gun do you Uh my carry a uh What is it? Millennium G2 Taurus. Uh-huh. Yeah, Millennium G2 Taurus or Where do you hold it? And you give it in a holster and everything. >> in a holster. I got a Blade Tech holster, you know what I'm saying? Um you know, the one that you ain't got to worry about the screws or whatever, the tensioning or nothing of that nature at all. And like I said, literally it was on the door, you know? Right then and there. But once that situation got abrupt or whatever like that, that's when I was like, "Shit, you got me and him out here looking crazy." So, he looks down, he sees you, knows you got your gun. Then what? You didn't have your gun at that point. No, sir. Okay. No, sir. So, what happens now? Um now, after that situation ended up happening, like I said, I pretty much like, you know what I'm saying? I kind of like blacked out because went black because he started yelling or whatever. But what I'm thinking was what what it is is that I'm sitting in the thing and he's like, "Oh, I got something for your That's what it was. I got something for your ass." or whatever. And I was just like, "Oh, really?" Automatically, let me just go put it right here on my waistline, you know what I'm saying? And that's what I went and did cuz I have every right to do so. I put my on my waistline, which he didn't see though. You see what I'm saying? It wasn't like I'm like, "Okay, I got my [ __ ] and I'm going to, you know." So, then I put it there and that's when I had to draw because he went to go start reaching or whatever, you know what I'm saying? For [ __ ] and I'm like, "Oh my goodness." And we ended up getting in a tussle. Well, I'm sorry. We ended up getting in a tussle. That's what it was. I'm sorry. So, he went to go and do the reaching, he started swinging on me or whatever and then that's when, you know, he got firearm. Did you grab him out of the truck when he was reaching? >> no, sir. Okay. No, sir. I never even walked into his truck or whatever like anyway, shape or form, you know what I'm saying? I know castle doctrine. I'm not going to do that [ __ ] you know what I'm saying? Like, I'm not going to ever >> So, where were you guys at, based on where your trucks are parked? In the middle of them. You're in between the two trucks? >> the two trucks, right there. Okay. And that's where you guys started tussling. You were both grabbing on each other? Yes, sir. Okay. And you're throwing punches back and forth? Yeah, I actually grabbed him behind the truck, which I don't even know how the hell you get behind the white of his truck, because Behind his truck? Yeah, because you look at the scene, his necklace and the mom necklace is laid behind there. You see what I'm saying? Right in that area, or whatever, right in in there. And then Oh, that's why, cuz we started back there. Then he started to swinging. You're not going to swing on me. I tried to get in the open area, because my back was up against something. And then that's when we came out to that area, right there. And I literally I'm with the left hand, trying to control him, you know what I'm saying? The best I can, or whatever, but he's just swinging away, swinging away. And I'm just like, damn, man. And I felt [laughter] something cut me, but I didn't know what it was, you know what I'm saying? So, like, I I got hit right there. And I'm just like, and then that's where it all all said and wrote. And these are brand new crops, too. Like, I literally was in a tussle with this dude. Look at Look at my I got a hole on the side, look like I'm homeless. So, while then while you guys are Were you punching back on him? I did not I did not be in the swing, because I had I had At the time, I had the cell phone in my left hand, when I was on the phone with John. Yeah. So, you came out with John on the phone. Yeah. I had I was already Yeah, that's correct. I was already on the phone. >> trying to hold on to your phone, >> Yeah. fend him off. You guys get out to the parking lot. And uh you left-handed or right-handed? I am right-handed. Right-handed. Okay. So, then you took a shot. Correct. Okay. Right-handed shooter, I'm taking it. Yeah, right-handed shooter. Got John on the Cuz it was it was a close quarter shot. I'm like, man, it just I stood up I'm I'm standing up, or whatever, you know what I'm saying? In the situation, he's right here, and he just suddenly swings. So, I drew my weapon up here, brought it out, and just two shots, you know what I'm saying? Like I said, my [ __ ] went to jam. I wasn't going to figure out what was going on or whatever, but he steadily was saying that literally while he on the ground, "I'm going to [ __ ] kill you." I'm like, "Man, [ __ ] you know what I'm saying? Cuz I don't know what you have on you." Right. >> know. I don't know if you have a firearm or any way, shape, or form, you know what I'm saying? All I do is see this black cell phone here laying there, and I'm just like, "Damn, man." And Did it done jams? I cleared back in it. Yeah, got it back to work again. I fired another shot or whatever, but just to let him stay down. And that's when the guy that the guy with the blue shirt, I did notice he runs over or whatever, and he's trying to help him. I'm like, "Bro, don't touch him, you know, cuz I don't know like, you know, like the whole suing other thing." I'm like, "And he don't make He may not know what he's doing." I'm like, "Let EMS handle the situation." But then, when I went to go touch him on the shoulder during the situation, he's like, "Get the [ __ ] off of me." Bro, bro, don't let Don't there Don't even know if Can you hear me? I I don't have a problem with you, but don't be violent and Can you hear me? Yeah, we're good. >> Yes. Okay, where is the shooter? He's He's standing right in front of me. Okay, give me a description of him. Do you know his name? Yes, he He He owns the barber shop. The shooter owns the barber shop? At this point, detectives don't appear ready to accept Duwain's account at face value. They seem more interested in testing his narrative, whether he had a reasonable basis for claiming an imminent threat, whether he ever saw a weapon, and whether this confrontation was really as spontaneous as he says. After a bathroom break, the questioning begins to move in that direction, probing not just what happened during the shooting, but how these two men got to that parking lot in the first place. How do you smell like this? So, something something really small was kind of weird. Mhm. You said you were you're coming from Ocala. Yes, sir. And you drive down Drive all the way to where you pass pass Connie, come off of Independence on the 44. >> Mhm. Go past Connie, go past racetrack. And so you saw you were going to cut through Yeah, I was supposed to, yeah. Why would I not turn into the other spots? >> No. At what point why did you drive through the parking lot of Colonial Plaza? I drove drove through the parking lot of Colonial Plaza. Yeah. Oh, oh, oh, that was when I was on the phone with John because I saw Nick up there and I was just like, "Oh, [ __ ] you know what I'm saying? Like [ __ ] up here already at the barber shop, so I don't got to worry about going in." I told you that I I literally said, "I go to Papa Jay's every morning to go get my coffee and I'll go and check on the shop." Because what I wanted to do was I was going to go up there and make sure that the AC is perfectly fine, which I can show proof of that to you as well that we had an AC issue within the last 2 weeks that when summertime hits, that commercial unit don't really do what it's supposed to do. You know what I'm saying? And also too, I was going to go up there and go and pick up when I got done cutting my son's hair, which he got a fresh ass haircut. He had chips that he spilled all over my barber chair and I didn't want to hear Chris bitching. From the day before? From the day before? Yeah, from the day before. I literally I think I cut his hair like yeah, literally the day I did it the day before. You know what I'm saying? Gave him a fresh fade. And then that's when I left and I went out there and I was just going home. That was it. So you drove through Colonial Plaza. You didn't stop and and go inside of the barber shop or anything. You saw you saw Nick was >> Yeah, I saw Nick was already there and I know once they're there, then they're going to be like, "Oh, [ __ ] it, you know what? Skinny had his son here." Whatever, you know what I mean? And just did it that way. So then now you're heading home. You're you're cut through Starbucks. Yeah, correct. See him there. And then you go, "I wow, I was about to go through Don Boss." Because I was just like, "Oh, you know, I don't want to see my ex Britney." Right. >> what I mean? I'm like, "Fuck, you know, that girl is aggravating as hell." But I was just like, "No, I'm going to just go through Starbucks, you know." I literally do that same route every day. I even had a golf cart. I drive through there with a good with um David Elias saw me one day. He said, "Man, you need to go get one of them low speed things." And I'm like, "What is that?" He's like, "A tag because you can't be driving it. Like you literally I saw you leaving your house, drive through Starbucks, and then you drove up the sidewalk." And I'm like, "I don't want to put it on the road. I only can go 20 mile an hour." And he's just like, "Yeah, but you still" I was like, "All right, I understand." So, I just stopped driving that day. You know what I mean? That's literally my same route every day. I got like I told him my life is so tight with having those girls full time, you know, that I do the same thing every single day. Um I don't know if anybody has told you yet, you know, Trashton's dead. Damn. They They had him alive a little bit, um but he did not make it at the hospital. I don't know if anybody had told you that. No, Leo was in here trying to just, you know, he comfort me and stuff whatever. He had to say the sorry and stuff like that, but that's not something I wanted to have happen today. And you know, that's just really sad because like I said, that's literally my friend. Mhm. You know, that's it. And I'm just trying to, you know, I was just trying to get him to understand stuff. Like I told the other guy before, there's a lot of black guys that grow up in life with a lot of anger in their body and don't want to listen. They just automatically draw to the thinking that type of thing and saying that. You know, that's why I wanted to show proof to you to let you know that every single time there's an argument or any type of instance, that's immediately the first thing that he wants to do is to threat. You know, and I'm like, that's just weird. I'm trying to have a civil conversation with you. Right. You see what I'm saying? Like, I'm not here to be no running up on no gang person or or running up on somebody or whatever, you know, like in that manner, doing a drive-by or whatever, or looking for an altercation. I got two little girls, man. Mhm. And a son that I'm just not brought into this world, you know? The last thing that I want to be sitting there doing is be trying to sit there and get into a fight. My main thing was the safety of them. That's why I was trying to get clarification so that he can possibly even say, "If you knew who the person was that was speaking on that stuff, then say something." I even You go to my house, I literally I literally barricaded my house so that if it were to get shot, that I know that I can roll off the bed, no joke, I put my truck in front of my window. Mhm. You know what I'm saying? Because you ain't going to shoot through an engine block or anything or whatever. And my back door to where my daughter stay at, I even put a big ass spotlight back there. So, if somebody, you know, if sometimes the people see people see a spotlight, they're not going to go there. Right. But, that's just it, you know what I'm saying? It's not a vindictive, meaning like, "Oh, you know, you need to you go and do this." Hell, no. You know what I'm saying? And I know Nick Norton's the one that's going through that paperwork right now. He knows me. He sees me every single day when he comes to my barber shop. >> Mhm. You know what I'm saying? He knows that I carry while being in my barber shop. You know what I'm saying? Cuz he's seen it multiple times, and never has one time have you ever said, "Skinny, cover up your weapon." You know what I'm saying? Or any of that nature. He don't feel threatened. He don't be turning around feeling no type of way. Mhm. I'm just This is just mind-blowing. That's why I said the situation should have never even happened if we just would have a civil conversation and you not talking about threatening and hurting and then taking me away from my family. Right. You see what I'm saying? That's self-defense, flat out, clear as day or whatever, you know? And it sucks because like I told the beforehand, being in the military prior service or whatever, I know how this [ __ ] works out to where you got to break down every single detail. But at the end of the day, you know what I'm saying? If you were to put yourself there in the same shoes and you said him and threatened multiple times, and you got the proof to even show this, you know what I'm saying? And then you're over here just trying to just have a civil conversation and now this [ __ ] happened. It It's clear day. Stand your ground. Protect yourself. You know what I'm saying? That's it. And I'm telling you, I ain't no vindictive I feel bad. I honestly I could have swore to God I really honestly do. You know what I'm saying? No joke. There's no There's no bone in my body that's just sitting there saying, "Yay, this has happened." I'm stressed out even more now because now I can't go back to my home, you know what I'm saying? I don't know what's going on with the situation, you know what I'm saying? I'm worried about my daughter. She's graduating today. She ain't going to walk across the stage knowing that her dad is in this situation. You know what I'm saying? And I even saw like just a glimpse. My kids' mom even knows about it out here and she's rushing back from Tennessee to try to make sure she can get to my son, which is in Ocala, you know? So, that's what I'm trying to I got a lot of [ __ ] going on in my head, which I only I put the kids first, man. Like I said, for everything and anything in this world, I put my kids first and their safety and you know, that is a lot to me, you know what I'm saying? When it comes down to it. And that's all I really was just trying to make sure that hey, we was on the same page or whatever like hey, man, you know, I should be able to go out there and go barbecue or whatever and not have to be looking over my shoulder or even getting on Zillow to try to find a new place to live. You see what I'm saying? Because I just want to be happy. All I wanted to do was just date the girl. You know what I'm saying? That's it. Hey, do you know You don't know John's number, do you? Uh John is Yes. And you may have to call him or you have to text him cuz John's from New York and he ain't probably going to answer. But I mean, if you send, you know, Oh, never mind. Yeah, yeah, he he his answer cuz I saw him touch me, too, as well. Okay. Sit tight for me for a few more. Uh let me check this out real quick. Um what's that stuff? It's This is your wallet, right? >> Yes, sir. You can take all that. I don't need that or nothing, bro. I'm going to stick it in this other room over here. >> Yeah, you're fine. I'm not stressing none of that. >> No, you're good. Okay. As D'wan is left alone for a moment, signs of distress begin to surface. Up to this point, no one has told him what his status is, whether he's under arrest or free to leave, and notably, he hasn't asked. Come on, bud. Oh, yeah, she don't take photos. That's fine. We'll do them right here. Oh. Yep. What are these photos for? What's that? What are the photos for? Just we document everything as as we find it at the scene. So, we do uh how just exactly how you were, just exactly how everything was. Okay, I just don't want it to be put on Facebook cuz of that. No, no, no, that's This is This is not going on Facebook. >> Okay. Okay. Not a chance, bud. Okay. Uh I am going to take photos, but I got to change. You're going to look good in these. Huh? I don't want to wear these. We'll go back out of the bathroom. Okay. And the reason I'm doing that is So, what's going to happen with me? That's what I want to know. You know, my situation because I know we talking about that and all that stuff, sir, but I ain't lying, I got to poop again. Stomach flipping and [ __ ] >> I I I totally get it. Okay. Um As everything goes right now, Shanquan, you are going to be arrested, okay? Um So, what am I being charged with, murder? Yes. That's crazy. And that is on why because if you don't mind me asking, you know, man to man, just wondering cuz there was no way, shape, or form that I see in my life that I ever said, "Oh, you know what? Let's go play Fortnite." Do you know what I'm saying? Like Man, it's it's a lot more complicated than anything like that. >> No, I know. I'm breaking down to you even a person even whenever they challenging you or they turn left or whatever they turn on a retreat or if you sitting there doing something along those lines, but like I said, man, you know, the guy that was there, he ain't see [ __ ] I know for a fact he ain't see [ __ ] You know what I'm saying? Literally, he just he just rolled up. I pay attention to where this I told I pay attention to everything or whatever, you know. Straight up, so I'm just trying to think, pinpoint, and figure out who got the best angle as far as cameras though, cuz I know we got people that got cameras up there. Mhm. And that's what I'm trying to figure out. Shanquan mentioned surveillance cameras as though they will help clear him, but prosecutors would later point to that same footage as showing something difficult to reconcile with split-second self-defense. According to investigators, after After shot was fired, store footage shows roughly 14 seconds passed before the third and final shot. Prosecutor's would argue this was not one continuous reflexive response to an imminent threat, but evidence of time to reassess. A pause they said undercut Duwan's claim that he was simply reacting in fear. That's the only thing. Is there cameras in the in your shop? >> No, it didn't happen in the shop. It happened outside. It just, you know, I wanted them to see, man. You know, like I said, bro, it's just That's just too much. Trash has a camera right outside of his shop. Mhm. Is there anybody else that has access to his shop? >> That girl, Nicole, does. Nicole does? >> probably ain't recorded it because he said his runs. You know what I'm saying? Like it just runs, you know, 24/7. But the sad part about it is he ain't going to let she she not going to let you get access to it because of the [ __ ] that he was doing down there. You know? That's that's that's Was Was he doing that out front? Yeah, man. You know what I'm saying? They've been notified multiple times or whatever, you know? Elias has been down there. That's why you see I showed you on the phone that he was like, "Oh, you know, who is this gray SUV?" I'm like, "Bro, that's like David Elias' personal vehicle. This old lady's personal vehicle." You know what I'm saying? That's how paranoid you are. I was like, "That's crazy." Like Damn, man. I ain't never in my entire life, bro. Never ever ever in my life. Never in my entire thought that I'll lose my life. >> [music] >> After the interview, Duwan was charged with second-degree murder and booked into the Citrus County Detention Facility, where he was held without bond. 15 months after the shooting, the defense moved to have the case dismissed under Florida's Stand Your Ground Law. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court denied the motion, finding De'Wan was never justified in drawing, much less firing, his weapon. The trial of State of Florida versus De'Wan Ross Jr. began in early 2026. Prosecutors challenged the self-defense claim with eyewitness testimony, surveillance footage, physical evidence from the scene, and proof of escalating conflict between the two men. Ultimately, the jury found De'Wan guilty of second-degree murder with a firearm. Five weeks later, he was sentenced to life in prison. Two fathers walked into that parking lot that morning. Only one left alive, and in the end, [music] many more lives were changed forever.
