Oh my god. >> Miami County. 911. >> Oh my god. Somebody Somebody broke into my home. Somebody broke into my home and my wife. >> Are they still in there? >> I I don't know. I don't know. >> Hey, what's the address? >> Court City, Ohio. Please, please, hurry. Please, please, hurry. >> What? What are you seeing? >> My wife is She's got two shots to her head. Blood everywhere. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. >> [music] [music] >> in the early morning hours of Monday, February 16th, just over a day after Valentine's Day, a violent crime unfolded on a quiet street in the village of Tip City, Ohio, a place that looks like any other calm suburban community in America. The case was especially disturbing because it was initially reported as a home invasion, the ultimate violation of someone's sanctuary. It involved a family that from the outside appeared ordinary and grounded. The seemingly random nature of the crime left an entire community shaken. In this video, we'll examine the available factual information, walk through what unfolded, and provide an update on the legal process. Let's dive in. In the village of Tip City, Ohio, in a modest house along the 900 block of Cunningham Court, live the Flynn's. 37-year-old Ashley Flynn was a mother of two, a substitute teacher for Tip City Schools and the seventh grade girls volleyball coach at Typicanw Middle School. Over the past year, she also taught for Lifewise Academy, a nonprofit providing Bible-based education to public school students off-campus during school [music] hours. Her husband, 39-year-old Caleb Flynn, served as a worship pastor and music minister at the Christian Life Center in Tip City. He also worked as vice president of sales for Ashley's family business. Years earlier, in the early 2000s, Caleb played basketball at Brham High School, where the team won multiple state titles. In 2013, he appeared as a contestant on season 12 of American Idol. In one interview, he said, "I absolutely love the Lord. [music] I love my wife more than anything. She is very, very pretty. I love her." Together, they were raising two daughters described by neighbors as energetic [music] and inseparable. Around Christmas, the girls would deliver fresh baked cookies to neighbors. On warmer days, they were often seen outside [music] with the family's two golden doodles. By all outward appearances, it was a normal American household, the kind you pass every day without a second thought. But behind closed doors, something far darker was quietly taking shape. It was a bitter 20° in Tip City during the early morning hours of February 16th. The kind of cold that stings your face the moment you step outside. Car windows were layered in frost. Engines groaned before turning over. But inside the Flynn home, something far worse was unfolding. Something that led Caleb to contact the police. >> Oh my god. >> Miami County 911. >> Oh my. Somebody somebody broke into my home. Somebody broke in my home. Not my wife. >> Are they still in there? >> I I don't know. I don't know. >> Okay. What's the address? >> How do you hear them? Court City, Ohio. Please, please hurry. Please, please hurry. >> What are What are you seeing? >> My wife is She's got two shots to her head. Blood everywhere. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Sir, please. >> Ma'am, I need you to take a deep breath. Okay. Do you still see anybody in the house? >> No. The door to the garage was wide open. Please hurry. Please. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. My daughters are here. My My daughters are here. Where is she at? >> She's in the bed. She's in the bed. >> Are you with her? >> Yeah, I am in the room. I'm looking at her. Yes, please. >> Okay. Do you guys have the door locked? >> We have the the doors to the garage locked, but into the house. Yes. Please wake up. Wake us. [laughter] >> Where Where is that room at in the house? My partner's getting them dispatched. Okay. But I need you to answer my questions so I can get you help as fast as I can. Okay. >> What? What questions? >> Where are you guys at in the house? >> I'm in the bedroom with her right now. >> My daughters are in their room. >> So, you're not you are not with the children? >> I was with the children. What happened? >> Okay. But you're not with them now? >> No, they're in their room. They're not even awake. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Sir, please. Please. Please. >> They're They are heading that way. Okay. I need you to take a deep breath for me. >> I think she >> Are you hearing anything? >> No. I I I rubbed her leg and and said her name. She's not answering. >> Okay. Your daughter's not answering you. >> I'm No. What? I'm not. >> This is where the situation becomes even more unsettling. Caleb says there's just been a shooting inside the home and yet the two children are asleep in another room. That means whatever happened unfolded quickly and in a way that didn't wake them. And while he's standing in the bedroom with his wife, he's not physically with the children. He says he was with them when it happened, but now he's not. In real time, the house feels divided. One room frozen in violence, the other still undisturbed. >> What do you say? What' you say? >> Your your daughter's not answering you. >> No, they're in the other. It doesn't across the room in the other [clears throat] in their room. >> Okay. Are you hearing any kind of noise inside the house? >> No. No. Her face is Oh, sir. Her face is white as good a ghost. >> Okay. Who's Whose face? >> My wife's face. >> Your wife's face? >> The one? Yes, the one who was shot. >> She was She was what? >> Shot. I said, >> "Okay. Where was she shot at?" >> In the head. In the head. I hope there's crap everywhere. [laughter] >> Okay. Is she breathing? >> I I don't No, I don't think so. Ashley. Ashley. Baby. Baby, please. Oh my god. There's No, she's not. >> Okay. She's not responding to you. >> No. No. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Anybody in my house now? >> It's No, it's pitch black and the doors are locked. The door to leading to the garage door was wide open when I ran in there. >> Okay. Do you see any kind of vehicles? >> Um um No, no, wait. No. The the the door there's a side door in our garage door that's open by the Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. >> Okay, I need you to just take a deep breath for me. Okay, they're getting to you as quick as they can. Is that door still open? >> Yes, it is. Yes, it is. >> Okay. >> What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? >> Is Is she breathing at all? >> I don't think so. There's two shots. >> If If you are comfortable, I want you to go and find the cloth and I want you to put a cloth on that gunshot wound. Okay. Oh, like a towel. >> Yes, like a towel. But do not apply direct pressure to it. Just put it on that blood wound. Okay. >> Okay. Oh my god. [clears throat] >> Oh my god. >> Just I need you to just take a deep breath for me. Okay. >> Okay. Okay. >> Just get that cloth and I want you to put it on that wound, but don't apply direct pressure to it. Okay. They're coming to you as quick as they can. Okay, >> I just laid it on her head. >> Okay, >> now the panic gives way to specifics. Caleb states he placed a cloth on her head. He says he rubbed her leg. He calls her name, but he hasn't described hearing gunshots. He hasn't mentioned seeing someone flee. The only physical detail mentioned is an open side door. So, at this point, the image is stark. A bedroom, an unresponsive wife, two children asleep down the hall, an open door in the dark. The rest of the story has yet to surface. >> Where are the juveniles? Are they okay? Have you checked on them? >> They're I haven't checked on >> Okay. Can Can you go check on the juveniles for me? >> The police is here. The police is here. >> Okay. Can you go check on the juveniles for me? >> Wait, the cops just called. I think just they're just left. They just left. >> Okay. I need you to go check on the juveniles for me. Okay. >> Okay. Okay. >> They're still They're still sleeping. They're still sleeping. >> Okay. You still see them breathing? You don't see any wounds on them? >> No. No. The cop just [clears throat] the cop just pulled. Sir, sir. Sir, sir. The cop. The cop is here. >> Okay. I want you to >> Okay. Open the door for him so he can get into her. Okay. >> Okay. He He's running. He's coming to me. Sir, hurry. Sir, >> what? >> I don't know. There's the door TO THE CROSSER WAS WIDE OPEN. I'm her is her her husband. [music] >> According to the case report, when officers arrived, they observed the garage side door still open. When they entered the home, they found Ashley in the master bedroom lying in bed with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. On the floor were two spent shell casings. Just down the hall, the couple's two daughters were still asleep, unaware of what had happened. Arrangements were later made for Ashley's family to come and pick them up. Outside, the quiet street was filled with flashing lights. The home was secured and a perimeter was established. Police deployed canine units and even used a drone to search the surrounding area for anyone who might have fled the scene. No suspects were located. As detectives began processing the scene, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called in to assist with evidence collection. Authorities also asked anyone in the area with security footage or information to come forward. Early documentation classified the incident under an additional internal category, SUSP. suspicious in nature. That designation isn't a criminal charge. It signals that investigators believed the circumstances required deeper scrutiny beyond the initial report. Meanwhile, Caleb Flynn agreed to speak voluntarily with investigators and was transported to the Tip City Police Department. According to the affidavit, the crime atlas has requested the interview footage and will publish it once it becomes available. In those initial hours, the explanation circling through Tip City felt straightforward. An apparent burglary, a break-in gone wrong, a random act of violence in a neighborhood that rarely sees it. Local news crews arrived quickly speaking with neighbors who were still trying to process how something like this could happen here. >> Yeah, Jack, Lauren, this is honestly a really sad story and my heart just feels heavy being here right now. But as you can see behind me, the house of the Flynn family, it's still taped off. Investigators, they were called here around 2:30 this morning, and they continue to work to determine who is responsible for the death of 37year-old um Ashley Flynn. But tonight, friends, students, and neighbors, they're focusing less on the crime and more on the woman they say means so much to them. Becky Smith is a resident of Tip City and her sister lives in the same neighborhood as the Flynn family. Becky told us her sister has dementia, but she knew the Flynn's through their acts of kindness. >> The little girls, the Ashley's daughters, brought her cookies all the time, and I think they did that with the whole neighborhood. >> And if you learn anything about Ashley, it's that her kindness was for everyone. Ashley was always very sweet and um very um you know loving to her children and inviting to mine. >> Ashley Flynn was many things to many people. A wife, mother, teacher, and volleyball coach. A prayer vigil was held at Upper Room Church today. She was described as loving, joyful, and compassionate. Many saying she lived a life and left a legacy that reflected her love for Christ. In a post from Tip City Schools, they said Ashley was known for her beautiful smile, warmth, kindness, and the positive impact she had on so many both in and out of the classroom and on the court. As the community grieves, they mourn the loss of someone who meant so much to so many. >> By the third day of the investigation, no suspect had been publicly identified, and pressure was building. Community members demanded to know what really happened and whether there was any ongoing threat to the public. Tip city police chief Greg Atkins spoke with a local news station in an effort to reassure residents and address those growing concerns. >> This is a very complex case of a large amount of evidence and a large amount of stuff taking place. >> The investigation into the death of 37year-old Ashley Flynn is ongoing after she was shot inside her home in the early hours of Monday morning. Tip City Police Chief Greg Atkins says investigators are still collecting evidence. He says many details can't be released like the 911 call. I asked if he could tell me who the caller was, and he said he couldn't, but said >> it'll be pretty self-explanatory when it's released. >> Officers were called out on reports of a burglary, so I asked if there was evidence of forced entry. >> There's signs that point to that occurred. This is definitely an isolated incident to kind of put people at ease in the community. We don't believe that it was anything random. It was more of a targeted isolated incident to that one house. >> An autopsy was performed on Tuesday and the chief confirmed Flynn died of a gunshot wound. >> I'm not going to release right now that where the gunshot wounds were um or exactly how many. >> Chief Atkins says in 26 years in the department, he's only seen about six homicides in Tip City. So they asked for assistance. Multiple agencies including the FBI and Ohio BCI are helping with the investigation. >> We realize that we just don't have the manpower to keep moving at this at the speed that needs to move. Resources and not only an expertise in the matter, but also um you know the the the digital resources and the technology that's out there that um you know wouldn't even be feasible for a department size to have that technology, but it exists. Chief Atkins says there's a lot of moving parts with an investigation like this, so they're asking for the community's patience as they work on the case. >> 3 days after the shooting on February 19th, Chief Atkins issued another public statement. Up until that point, the working theory had been burglary, break-in, unknown suspect who slipped into the cold February darkness. But that narrative was about to collapse. Investigators now believed the scene had been staged. There was no fleeing intruder, no unidentified suspect at large. Instead, the danger came from inside the home. Caleb Flynn, the husband who had made the 911 call, was taken into custody and charged with murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. According to the criminal complaint, investigators alleged that Caleb murdered his wife by shooting her with a firearm in the morning hours of February 16th, 2026. The complaint further states that responding officers were initially led astray by the staging of the crime scene. That single word, staging, reframed everything. What was first described as a violent home invasion was now being alleged as something far more [music] personal. The following morning, February 20th, Caleb appeared in court for his arraignment, accused of shooting his wife inside their bedroom while their two children slept down the hall. >> The honorable judge Daniel, you may be seated. >> All right. Uh, this is case 26 CRA 285, Caleb C. Flynn. Uh, Mr. Flynn, you have several charges here. Count one is a murder charge. is a count felony of the first degree. Count two is a uh two and three are both felonious assault charges, second degree felonies. Count four is tampering with evidence, a thirdderee felony. And uh that's count four. Count five is tampering with evidence, a thirdderee felony. Mr. Flynn, we're going to set your case for a preliminary hearing for next week on February 26th at 100 p.m. You do have the right to have an attorney represent you. If you cannot afford one, you can apply to the public defender's office and they'll determine if you're eligible for a courtappointed attorney. Do you understand all that? >> Yes, sir. >> Is there anything you'd like to say to the court with regards to a bond in this case? >> I'm so sorry you cut out there. Is there anything you'd like to tell the court with respect to bond in this case? >> I'm not I don't really understand that. So, >> okay. So, the court has to establish a bond, sir, uh to uh ensure that your appearance. Okay. Um so, the court will establish a bond and you have the right to tell me, hey, I'm not a flight risk. I am a flight risk or anything of that nature. >> Is there anything you would want to tell me about that? Sir, I I [clears throat] just want to take care of my daughters. I'm not at risk. I'm >> Mhm. >> I understand. Okay. >> Yes, sir. >> Well, the court is going to order a $2 million blanket bond in this case covering all of your charges. Should you post bond in this case, the court will order that you be on pre-trial services electronically monitored house arrest. Furthermore, the court will order that you will have no contact whatsoever directly or indirectly through a third party with you are not permitted to speak to them in any way, shape or form. That includes electronic communications. You are not allowed to communicate through family members whatsoever. Do you understand all of that? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Thank you. We're adjourned. Thank you, sir. This case is still unfolding in real time. The alleged crime occurred less than 2 weeks ago, and many of the key investigative records have not yet been released. As additional documents become public, a clearer picture may emerge. On the legal side, Caleb's preliminary hearing was originally scheduled for late February. Through his attorney, he formally waved his right to a speedy preliminary hearing, pushing that proceeding back to late March. At a preliminary hearing, prosecutors are not required to prove the entire case. They must show probable cause, meaning there is sufficient evidence to suggest that a crime occurred and that the accused likely committed it. The burden at this stage is relatively low. If a judge finds probable cause, the case proceeds to a grand jury. The grand jury would then determine whether to issue an indictment. If indicted, the matter proceeds toward trial. Amid the legal process, Ashley Flynn's family released a public statement. Our hearts are shattered. Ashley brought endless light to our world, and we are trying to navigate this immense loss. Our family believes this arrest was made carefully and not without serious consideration. After speaking with both local police and federal authorities, we trust the proper steps were taken and the process is being handled appropriately. We kindly ask for privacy as we work through this complex situation. We are clinging to our faith just as Ashley did each and every day. At first, this was described as a random act, a breakin, a violent intrusion into a peaceful home, the kind of nightmare that makes an entire community look over its shoulder. But as the days passed, the narrative shifted inward. If prosecutors ultimately move forward, this case will not hinge on whether a crime occurred. It will hinge on why. What happened inside that bedroom in the early morning hours? What evidence do investigators have that tells the real story? And what motive, if any, explains how a home that appeared so ordinary from the outside became the center of something so [music] devastating? For now, many of those answers remain sealed within investigative files and future court proceedings. And until those records are laid out in open court, the full picture of what happened inside the Flynn home on February 16th remains incomplete.
