She laughed in court, mocked the judge, and acted like she didn't even know what she did, claiming she wasn't in her right mind. It was all part of her plan to avoid prison. Her sure way of going home. But then came the moment that shattered that illusion and wiped the smile clean off her face. This is the chilling case of Tyler Shabbis and how her shocking behavior turned a brutal crime into one of the most disturbing courtroom moments in recent memory. Tyler Shabbis, a 25-year-old woman from Green Bay, Wisconsin, became the center of a horrifying criminal case in 2022. It all began on February 23rd when police were called to a residence on Stony Brook Lane after a woman, the victim's mother, reported finding a human head in a bucket in her basement. That head belonged to 25-year-old Shad Theurion. He had been in a relationship with Shabus. What investigators discovered next was gruesome. Furion's body had been dismembered with various parts found scattered in different parts of the home. Tyler Shabbis had not only taken his life, but she also mutilated his body in a disturbing series of actions that shocked even seasoned law enforcement. supposed to be. >> When officers located business shortly after the discovery, they noticed blood on her clothing. She was arrested and taken in for questioning. Terry wars. Just put your hands behind directly. >> You got on your hands. >> Oh, on your hands. Okay. Yeah, we're going to have to >> What apartment? >> What apartment are you in? Come on. I got a warrant off for my arrest. Took him out. They took him out. >> Get a good one out of my thumb. >> All right. In the interrogation room, she appeared detached and at times even amused. She laughed when recounting the events, made strange and callous remarks, and treated the entire situation like a twisted joke. >> So then after you realized he was no longer he was dead, his face is purple and he said plugs going out of his mouth. Um, what'd you do? >> Stop it. >> Okay. So then you had sex with him? >> Yes. Okay. >> And I had a dildo. >> Okay. >> I played with one too. >> What did you do with the dildo? >> And I just fell on my hel. >> What did you do with the dildo? >> I put it in his mouth. Put it in there. >> The lack of remorse was alarming and her demeanor quickly became one of the most talked about aspects of the case. She told investigators they were going to have fun trying to find all the organs. A quote that would later be repeated during court hearings to show her complete disregard for human life. >> What you do with the body? >> The body's there. >> Yeah. So, >> so were you going to take the head somewhere? >> I like that. >> You liked it? >> Well, you're going to have fun trying to look for all the organs, but Yeah. There's They're all dismembered. >> Yeah. >> So, you dismember the body, too? Yeah. >> What did you do with the body parts? >> Oh, they're um they're in the house >> somewhere. >> They're like um Yeah. Yeah. >> Basement upstairs. >> Absolutely. In the basement. And then um I know. I forgot the head. I wanted the head. >> Did you bring anything? >> Yeah, it's in the van. In the van. It's um >> What is it? What is it? I foot maybe I think it's a foot a lake maybe I just I'm like I'm gonna bring it all then I'm like man this is messy so then I just left it I got lazy >> okay >> I got lazy and that's what I did so I'm like >> her statements were disturbing and lacked any visible remorse from the very beginning Tyler Shabus displayed disturbing behavior in the courtroom she often laughed during proceedings smiled at cameras and appeared to revel in any attention. At one point, she even flashed what appeared to be a gunfinger gesture toward the judge, further amplifying the public's outrage. Her behavior didn't just stay disrespectful, it turned violent. In a shocking moment caught on camera, Shabus attacked her own defense attorney, leaping at him during a pre-trial hearing. This actually happens more than once. >> Stop it. Stop it. [Music] We're off the record. >> The courtroom had to be cleared as deputies wrestled her to the ground. Many observers questioned whether she was mentally competent to stand trial. However, after a lengthy evaluation and legal debate, the court ruled she was fit to proceed. The trial began in July 2023. Prosecutors painted a clear and chilling picture of the crime using Shabus' own words and actions against her. They showed footage from the interrogation, discussed her callous attitude, and walked the jury through the sequence of events. Despite her erratic behavior in the courtroom, the evidence was overwhelming. Tyler Shabbis was found guilty of firstdegree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and thirdderee assault. >> First verdict reads as follows. We the jury find the defendant Taylor Denise Shabus guilty of firstdegree intentional homicide as charged in count one of the information dated this date, July 26th, 2023. Signed by the four person. Second verdict reads as follows. We the jury find the defendant Taylor Denanishabis guilty of mutilating a corpse as charged in count two of the information dated this date July 26th 2023 signed by the four person. The next verdict reads we the jury find the defendant Taylor Denanish guilty of thirdderee sexual assault as charged in count three of the information dated this date 26th day of July 2023 signed by the for person. The verdicts appear to be in order. Do either of the parties request that I pull the jury? Mr. Saunders? >> No. >> Mr. Frillic? >> Yes. >> Okay. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to do what's called polling the jury. It's very simple process. All I'm going to do is go down the line and ask each of you if this is your verdict. Your answer is either yes or no. I'm going to start in the back corner. Ma'am, is are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Ma'am, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Ma'am, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. Ma'am, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Ma'am, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Sir, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Ma'am, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> In the front to the right. Ma'am, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Sir, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Sir, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Sir, are these your verdicts? >> Yes. >> Ma'am, are these your verdicts? >> Okay. >> Her courtroom antics came to a sudden halt as the verdict was read. For the first time, there was no smile, no laughter. The judge looked her squarely in the eyes, and this time she had nothing to grin about. At sentencing, the courtroom saw yet another unexpected moment. Tyler Shabus's father, himself incarcerated, was brought into court in handcuffs and jailisssued clothing to testify on his daughter's behalf. Taking the stand, he became emotional as he told the court that Tyler had not always been this way. He blamed her ex-husband for reintroducing her to dangerous habits, saying she had been doing well until he came back into her life. He called the man a loser and said that Tyler's mental health had deteriorated after becoming involved with him again. >> Yeah. >> She was doing really well there, too, until her uh boyfriend/husband got out of jail. I turned everything upside down. >> Yeah. In part because of the methamphetamine use, right? >> Yep. Um, so Taylor was doing pretty well and then she started using the drugs. >> Yeah. >> Just a [ __ ] loser and he got my daughter involved in that [ __ ] >> He also pointed fingers at the system, saying it failed his daughter by not giving her the long-term help she needed, especially as she had shown signs of distress long before the crime occurred. >> She wasn't she was not in a right state of mind at all. So I feared that she would hurt herself. So that's why I took her and we both agreed. We both went there together, >> okay? >> And tried to get help and um and then ended up ended up uh uh releasing her and she came home and that was about it. >> Despite his emotional testimony, he did not argue that Tyler should be excused. He acknowledged she committed a terrible crime and needed accountability, but argued she deserved a chance to be rehabilitated, perhaps eventually eligible for parole. His testimony was part of a broader defense strategy addressing her long-standing mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, psychosis, and a history of medication resistance. The defense used these claims to support a mental health mitigation argument, even though the jury ultimately rejected the insanity defense under Wisconsin law because her drug use was voluntary. Despite his efforts to show that Tyler was once a functioning member of society, his testimony did not sway the court. The judge didn't hold back. He called her actions incomprehensible and her behavior throughout the case appalling. He referenced her lack of remorse, her violent outburst in court, and the pain she had inflicted on the Furion family. Tyler Shabzis was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Commission business, this is your opportunity to address me if there's anything on your mind you'd like to say before I pass sentence. >> No, there isn't. >> Okay. Um, it's the decision of this court and the judgment of the law uh that Mr. Chab business be uh be sentenced as follows as to uh in 22 CF uh 363 count one, that's the first degree intentional homicide as a repeater. It's a class A felony. going to impose life imprisonment without the without the possibility of extended supervision. I believe that's appropriate in light of the findings that I've already made. As far as count two mutilation of a corpse as a repeater, a class F felony, I'm going to adopt the recommendation of the preense investigation writer. Um 7.5 years of initial confinement followed by four years of extended supervision. That'll be consecutive to count one. As far as um count three thir third degree sexual assault as a repeater class G felony, uh I'm going to impose three years of uh initial confinement followed by four years of extended supervision. That will be consecutive to uh count two and uh count one. As far as the revocation cases, I'm going to impose one year u of incarceration on each of those counts. Those were run concurrent. The courtroom was silent. And as the judge delivered the final blow, her face showed what everyone had been waiting for, regret. Not the kind that comes from guilt, but the kind that comes when someone realizes the show is over and reality has hit. Since the sentencing, Tyler Shabzis has been transferred to a maximum security facility where she will spend the rest of her life. Just when the world thought they'd seen everything about this case, Law and Crime released an exclusive audio interview recorded from behind bars. In the newly published jail call, Taylor Shabasnness speaks from prison with a chilling calm, recounting the night of Shad Furion's death in her own words. She claims it started off as a consensual encounter, but quickly spiraled out of control. >> I was on the run in Texas after having my baby taken. I decided to make things right and clear up up north. When I got back, they put my on the bracelet. I went to buy a bag on the low. So, I went to my ex who was a Satan disciple and family, we all Latin kings, so we beeping. We don't with SDS. I gave him a hundo for the bag and the bag was $50. He pocketed the cash. Uh me and him and another homie all soaked up and then my homie left and I went to drop off my ax and he wanted before I left. So I went into the basement and he went and pulled out two chains. I asked him where my money at. And he said, "I ain't got it." So I took a chain. I put it around his neck and I asked him again, "Where my at?" He didn't respond. His face turned purple. There was blood coming out of his mouth. So I laid down on the bed and to listen to his heartbeat. And I said, "Damn, this mother is still beating." I went upstairs to grab a kitchen knife. I went back downstairs, took off his pants. I sucked his cut his head off at the same time because the only SC that I would ever be doing would be sucking. Then I chopped his off and conceal the crime. I used a nearby shower drain to pour out the blood and put it in bags and boxes around the basement to store the body parts in and plastic bags for the organs. I was covering up his body and while the people were entering the basement I would continue to cut him up and then um and I would cover him up and then when they would leave I would um cut him back up and then I headed out to the truck and I started loading up the body parts in there and then I went to back to the apartment I was staying at after chopping it up with my roommate. I went to go get rid of the body and then there was cops surrounding the place with their guns out telling us to get down, get on the floor and that's why I'm in c custody today. Well, what went down was I had bought a bag of dope. >> I bought it for 50 bucks, but I gave him a hundred and he didn't give me my $50 back. And what went down between the whole thing? He was a He was a SD and then I was um a Latin king and then I I wasn't supposed to be doing my with my ex >> but that's supposed to >> and uh you know SC they ain't good. I wasn't supposed to be doing business with my ex but I did and then uh what he did he pocketed the money that I was supposed to have. So I went out and took his out for that. As soon as that went down, I started chopping off the body because I did one thing for sure. I did have um I had a lot of mother out there. >> Her voice emotionless, her words direct, no apology, no hesitation. She describes the drug use, the violence that followed, and the grim aftermath. It's the same cold detachment jurors saw in court now echoed through the prison phone line. The recording offers no remorse, only confirmation of the brutal details, and for many, it was a haunting reminder of the darkness behind the crime. The case continues to haunt Green Bay and beyond. Not just because of the horrific crime, but because of how cold and mocking her attitude was throughout. This case stands as a grim reminder that evil doesn't always look like we expect. Sometimes it laughs in court, but eventually the law wipes the smile away. If you found this case shocking, let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
