On January 22nd, 2025, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office received a call regarding an armed robbery. The caller claimed that two male suspects had fled the scene on foot, but provided no further description. Despite the lack of actionable information, one deputy made the decision to begin stopping anyone he encountered on foot in the area, operating on nothing more than proximity. There he spotted two black teenagers walking through their neighborhood. Without probable cause or reasonable suspicion connecting them to the robbery, he decided to stop them. Instead of calling for backup or establishing probable cause, the deputy grabbed one of the boys, tackled him to the ground, and handcuffed him. The second teen was left standing nearby, entirely unsupervised. >> I'm going to keep up with y'all no matter what, man. Hey, come here. One of you. >> Come here. Come here. >> There's not no reason. If y'all would stop, I'd stop following you. >> Just stand by the van right there. I just want to talk to y'all. That's it. We're not trying to talk to y'all, bro. >> Okay. Well, I'm trying to talk to you. >> I'm giving you a lawful order to stop. >> That's no. >> Yeah, it is. All right. >> Go ahead. Call your mom. >> So, you're not listening to police. >> Okay, that's fine. >> Your army over my mom, bro. >> Call my mom, bro. For no reason for no reason for no reason for no reason. >> Right now, two young black kids are being tried to be stopped without clear reason. This isn't just about them. It's about all of us. If you believe racial profiling must end, show your support here. Leave a few words below and please consider liking the video. It may feel like a small step, but together it's what makes our voices louder and harder to ignore. >> He own me for no reason. He own me for no reason. >> Get on the ground. >> I'm trying to trying to talk to you. >> No, you're not. >> You would have listened to me. >> Trying to talk to me. [ __ ] you got me, [ __ ] That's all we doing, bro. >> That's all we doing. >> That's all we doing. >> Bet. It's good. Bet. I got you. You good. You good. >> Give me your hands. >> No. >> Give me your hands. >> All I want to do is talk to y'all. >> No. >> And y'all just had to keep walking. >> You're right. We could have talked. >> No, we could have talked, but y'all didn't want to talk, man. Now, hey, chill out. >> Chill out. >> I told you to stop. Get >> off of me. >> I told you to stop. >> You didn't do nothing. >> You're right. You didn't. But now you did. But now you did >> cuz I told you to stop and you didn't stop. >> This ain't [ __ ] >> You're right. It is. You should have stopped when I told you to. >> Should have stopped when I told you to. >> There's no >> All I want to do is talk to you. >> No, I don't want to talk to you for no reason. >> Okay. >> No reason to stop me. >> Yeah, I did. >> No, it's not. >> And you wouldn't know what it is if you would have stopped moving. >> It's good. >> Okay. So, then stop. We'll stay here. My partners are coming. >> I don't care. >> I ain't do nothing. >> We trying to go to our friend house. >> Okay. >> You ain't doing nothing. Then you should have listened to me. >> No. >> If you're not doing nothing, you should have listened to me, right? >> Come on. >> Look, man. All we're going to do is talk. That's all we're going to do is talk. All I want to do is talk to you. That's it. That's it, man. I just wanted to talk to you. >> This ain't nothing. This is nothing. This is for no reason. >> Wasn't for no reason. >> This is nothing. warmer than this. >> I had nothing. >> Just give us your hands. >> Just give us your hands. Mama, there is no reason. This is not fair. This is not fair. I did nothing. I did nothing. I did nothing. >> The teens protested loudly. Backup deputies arrived and rather than correcting their colleague, they participated in the detention. Only after they were restrained did the deputies return to the original armed robbery investigation. For nearly 20 minutes after the arrests, deputies scrambled to obtain an actual description of the suspects. When details finally came in, they included one crucial feature. The suspects had colored dreadlocks. Neither of the detained teens matched that description. >> You have anything on him? >> All right. Y'all ready to talk now? >> Okay, that's fine. >> We'll talk to you in a minute. >> Slow down. Other unit. >> Come on. >> What's your name? >> They start running. >> [ __ ] >> They start running. Come up here. >> They're both reaching. >> He's got a shoe. >> That's probably mine. >> And a bag of [ __ ] >> Okay. >> Where's the other guy? >> Huh? >> Where's the other guy? That's him. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Don't run, man. Look. Hey, you're not under arrest, >> man. >> You're not under arrest. >> Hey, did I say you're under arrest? No, we just want to talk to you. >> Huh? He's going to take off as soon as we run. >> Hey, man. I just want to talk to you. All I have to do is ask you questions. Y'all made it harder than it needed to be. >> On the way to our [ __ ] penthouse, bro. >> Okay, that's fine. And you'll be on your way once we're done talking to you. >> Hey, stop running. >> If you run, you're going to get tased. I'm letting you right now. 61. Taser. >> Get on the ground. >> Get on the ground. >> Get on the ground. >> On the ground. >> I'm going to tase you. Get on the ground. >> Put the phone down. >> Lay down. On your stomach. >> It's okay. It's all right, bro. Stand behind your back. >> Nice. Get it back. Send up. Come on. All we're doing is asking you questions, man. That's it. All you got to do is stop and answer questions. Got to stop earlier. That won't be difficult. >> You got a struggle? >> Yeah, I got it going. All right. Hey, do you need EMS? You need medical? >> Get out my face. >> Yes or no? >> Get out my face. >> Okay, I'm going to take yes or no. All right. I'm Deputy Kaylor, Fort Ben County Sheriff's Office. The reason I stopped you, man, it's uh we're working investigation in the area. Okay. Right now, all we know is that someone was robbed at gunpoint. I ask you two to stop. When How old are How old are you? How old are you? >> I don't care. >> Okay. When a law enforcement officer gives you an order to do something, you have to comply. You know that, right? As a you have to >> We're doing nothing. >> That's fine. And talk to me. I could have learned that and y'all could be on your way. But look at you now. You guys didn't want to listen. You guys wanted to fight. Literally, all I had to do was to stop, right? I didn't say anything except, "Hey, stop. Let me talk to you." And what'd you do? You guys [ __ ] ran away. >> You're asking if we have weapons. We're saying no. >> Did I ask you? >> I said no. Somebody came us. We're saying no. >> It wasn't me. >> You're That's riding with the same people. >> You can tell me no. >> You're riding with the same people. You're all talking to each other. >> You can tell me no. >> That's some [ __ ] >> You can tell me no all day. I don't know that. >> That's some [ __ ] bro. >> Stop. >> Reaching where >> you >> I'm trying to keep you from getting my arms. Obviously, that's called common sense. It's not if you >> It's not if you're making It's not if you listen. >> One of the boys mothers arrived at the scene demanding an explanation. The deputy told her that the teens had refused to stop when ordered, portraying them as defiant. The deputies continued to justify their actions to each other, framing the teenagers resistance as the central problem rather than acknowledging their own lack of cause. little kid [ __ ] how they need to shut the [ __ ] up because they are not in charge. >> Hell yeah. >> Boys in there scream in the house and I heard my son voice and what he need to do is be quiet. >> I'll explain to you. >> Hello ma'am. I'm Deputy Kaylor with Fing County Sheriff's Office. Um I'm aware your son is one of the boys that's in Okay, let me explain what's going on. So there was an incident >> down the road down West Airport, right? A man was robbed at gunpoint. Okay. I don't know if you're if the boys are involved in the stop so I can speak with them. The last thing I was given was that the suspects were walking down West Airport. They were walking down West Airport. >> From right now, we know it's suspects. Okay. So, I don't know if it was them. Hey, stop so I can talk to you. They take around. They take start running this way. I catch them over here. I said, "Please stop. Stop. Let me talk to you." They say, "No, we're not going to stop." At that point, it's a lawful order. All I'm trying to do is talk to them, man. >> It's all I'm trying to do. So, I grabb I don't even know what the names are right now. I grab one of them. He starts actively resisting, actively fighting me. So, I take him to the ground. My partners get him in handcuffs. We go and get the other young man. He ends up in handcuffs after he was at taser point because he was not listening. He's lucky he did not get tased. The other boy was lucky. The last thing I heard was a suspect had a gun and he starts reaching in here. I'm only working off of what I had. Okay. >> That's all. Thank you for spending that life. I know >> I know how bad that can be. >> Yeah. not always on your dad. >> Yes, ma'am. And that's all I'm trying to do. And and the boys, I know they're they're amp they're they're they're amped up. >> They see they see a police officer. They're young black men. I understand. >> Okay. I understand where they're coming from. Glad they're not hurt. I'm glad I'm not hurt. Okay. But they're going to stay back there until we're done with our investigation at this point. >> Investigation right now. >> Yeah. There's nothing to worry about. Everyone's safety is fine. So, yeah. No need to worry about it. Yeah. Yeah. No worries. We're just conducting investigation. your everything's good, sir. Thank you. >> I just need to talk to y'all, bro. That's it. So, I go to grab one. He's just >> said that I guess that kid was recording you hiding with that kid. So, I don't know where his cell phone >> his is on the right there. >> But he he's got video footage of the whole incident, I guess. >> Okay. >> So, chances are it's probably video footage of whatever occurred. >> I'm sure. Yeah, I think they started recording about once right here. I'm just, "Hey, man. I just want to talk to you." And while he's on the ground here, I'm just I'm talking to him. I'm just talking to you. But yeah. Hey, Elijah. Your mom's here. Um I let her know everything that's going on, though. Okay. So, she's aware of everything that happened. All right. So, right now, we're just working on uh dealing with the person that uh got robbed. See if we can get a good description. If it's not you guys, >> and I'm telling you, we're literally saying we're going to our friends out. We have nothing to do with you. >> We're You can tell we have nothing, bro. You I can't tell that. I can't tell that. Okay. I don't know that. >> All right. >> Okay. All right, man. All right. >> It's kind of hard to like see. I still got him on the phone. >> He said one of them has colored dreads. He's the only one with dreads, right? >> Yeah. Colored dreads. >> Yeah. Oh, >> look down for me. Thank you. y'all met at the Dead Neighborhood. Um, and you said you you pres and it was it was all off for offer up, right? Um, >> yeah, it was a motorcycle. >> It it was two people that were there with uh that that met up. Sorry, there's a plane passing by. It was two people. >> Okay. >> Okay. And then we we thought they weren't caring, so we drove up and the dude lied about saying he lied about saying he was in the car and they walked on foot. >> Okay. When you saw them leave, um, which way did they fit the description of the people you were looking for? >> Yes. Well, initially, yes. We're getting more information now. Um, >> I'm not saying it's him. No, we're not we're not saying it's him. We'll keep you updated. We're getting more information. >> So, you say that you're not saying you have to be >> as of right now. Yes, ma'am. So, so I'm I'm not sure. My partner's the one getting the information right now. Okay. Um uh the initial description that we got, these two boys did match it. I don't know now. We're getting more information, but just for everybody's safety, especially now that I know he's going to fight me, I have to keep him in handcuffs. Okay. Thank you, ma'am. Of course, you go ahead and face that way. >> Yeah. >> All right. We're still working on our investigation. Okay. >> Investigation of what? I just walk into our friend's house. >> No. No. >> Believe it or not, >> what are we doing? >> Everything is about y'all, man. We're trying to figure stuff out right now. Okay. >> Okay. >> Look, once we once we figure out what we got to figure out, if you if you boys are not involved, >> what bro? I go to [ __ ] college, bro. All I do is go to college and go to school, bro. What the [ __ ] you talking about? Going involving, bro. >> Right now, we're investigating. Right now, we're investigating a robbery with a weapon. Okay. >> Robbie in this gas station right here. >> No, not this gas station, >> bro. I don't know what you're talking about then, bro. >> Okay, that's fine. >> Just please let me go, bro. Like, I have to wait till my house. >> Listen, I I want you to explain something. You go to college, right? You're a smart boy. All right. So, so then you should know that if someone that if the if a law enforcement officer tells you to stop, just stop and listen. That's what made >> I don't mean nothing to I don't got nothing. Do I did I do any crime? Did I >> any use of force? Was like a tackle. Was it? >> No. So, I had him I had him by his uh right arm here. He was pulling away from me. I just stepped in front of him and he came down. >> Okay. No pressure points or >> No, no, no. No, no. Yeah. And then when he was on the ground, he had his arms tucked. So I was just holding on to his wrist the whole time. >> Okay. Was it explained to them now after being detained the reason why? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I told him we were we I just wanted to talk to him. I said we had a robbery with a gun involved and all I wanted to do was talk to them. Them running and them not listening and not giving listening to my lawful orders. That's what caused me to approach them and you know so so they know what's going on. I explained to mom too. She's understanding of the whole situation. >> So >> yeah. So when the the initial call dropped, we're down the street. As soon as I pulled up on airport near Ginger, those guys were running from literally that intersection. Um, and I tried to contact the RPC, see what we really have. The RP didn't answer at the time. He said he can't talk right now. Um, but I got him to talk right now. Yeah, they over a jacket. Guys took the jacket. >> How many how many suspects? >> They did say two. >> Okay. Um, I want to review my body cam because I may have seen some other people and jacket may have been on the other person in the area. >> Okay. Wait. And were they with them? >> No. >> Okay. >> So, I'm I'm >> Cuz if I don't need them here, I'm >> Okay. Yeah. >> All right, man. But so, right now, we're just going to review something real quick on our video footage. And uh if we can if we determine that you guys aren't involved, guess what? You're free to go. And it could have been way easier if y'all would have just stopped and listened to me. Do you realize that, right? This became so much more difficult because y'all just didn't stop and listen. Okay, that's fine. >> She wants at least Elijah to be clear by EMS. I told her the rest EMS injury. I'm still going to photograph that just in case. >> Okay. >> Um and then we can tell him. >> Okay, sounds good. >> Hey, your mom's going to have EMS come check you out just make sure you're okay. All right. >> He's a he's a he's an adult. >> He's an adult. Okay. >> And he's a juvenile. >> Yeah. I'm going pull now, take picture, then I'm going >> clear. >> Uh, like I said, I'm just dangerous. >> Okay. Hey, go ahead and step out, bro. >> Hey, Elijah. Your mom wants you to get up on. >> Hello, ma'am. >> How may I help you? >> Right. I think that's my nephew. I was just trying to see who the officer was. I had him detained. >> Oh, it was me. >> Okay. >> Yeah. What happened? >> So, we had a call of an aggravated robbery with a weapon, right? So, there was a there was a description that uh two two black males were uh robbed somebody at gunpoint. Okay. Males, they were walking down West Airport. Okay. I saw these two young men walking down West Airport as I was driving over there. I turn back around. Um I come to find them. I end up finding them over here on Old Richmond Road. Okay. I They see me and they immediately start running. >> So, and they were on the road that they were walking. These young men, they see me, they start running. >> I catch up to them. I ask them, "Hey, stop. I just want to talk to you. I just want to ask you some questions." They say, "No." They keep walking. Right? At that point, it's a lawful order from a law enforcement officer to stop. Okay? I'm conducting an investigation. They have to stop and talk to me. >> I catch up to him here. Ask them again. Ask them again. No. So, I finally catch them. I I grab Elijah >> and he start he tenses up. He starts pulling away. He starts trying to fight me. So, >> Right. Cuz he's not under arrest. >> Correct. But he is he is legally detained at that point >> under suspicion, right? >> Yeah. >> So, what was the description you was given? >> Uh it it'll all be in the report. >> Okay. >> Yeah, it'll all be in the report. >> And where did the uh robbery take place? >> Uh over on West Airport. >> West Airport and what? >> Uh it'll be in the report, man. I can't I can't divulge too much of the details cuz not cuz >> it's an active investigation. >> Yeah. And you and you're not directly involved. Yeah. >> Any other officers uh detain him or just you? >> I was I was the main one. I was held by another offic. >> I I understand that. I I completely understand that. And I spoke to his mother and >> yes, right now he's not involved in any of this, but he wouldn't have been involved even less >> if they would have just listened to me. During an investigation, I was conducting an investigation. >> He didn't know that. You asked him to stop. He said no. >> Gave him a question, not out of command. >> No, I told him to stop. I said, "You need to stop and then they said no." I said, "You are legally detained." They kept walking. I said, "You are law. I've given you a lawful order." They kept walking. >> Okay. And the probable cause you had was what? >> I don't have probable cause. I had reasonable suspicion. >> Okay. >> There's a difference, >> right? Cuz you didn't have probable cause, so he could have left. Reasonable suspicion mean that mean that you had a reason. He matched the description. This that and the third. >> No, man. That's that's that's incorrect. Okay. >> Um but I had I was legally within my right to do what I had to do. Okay. I'll be in the report. They had the report. >> Okay. They don't have the report yet. When the report >> Oh, no. They'll be able to access it. They can go to the Fort Bin County Records lobby and get a copy of it. >> All right. Is your supervisor out here, too? >> Of course. He's right here. >> Oh, this one. Okay. Uh that's uh another one of our deputies. Uh he he his stuff will be in the report. >> No, I'm just asking you who he is. >> I I I don't know his name right now. Yeah, he he might know him. >> By himself, that's three. >> Oh, that's Christie. >> Joe Christie. And what does he do? >> He fired another >> So why did he How did he get involved with this? >> I guess he was nearby. I don't I'm not too >> cuz you told me it was just you that detained him. There three people that took him down on the ground. >> Yep. >> Miss man, is he is he good to go? >> Yeah, he's >> okay. All right. Well, you guys are all good to go. Abdul, you're good to go, man. And uh I'm done with Elijah as well. So, you guys be safe. Okay. >> Thank you, man. >> Yeah. Any com? >> Yeah. In the end, after gathering the actual victim's statement, it became evident that the detained boys had nothing to do with the robbery. They were eventually released, but only after enduring an unnecessary traumatic ordeal. But wait for this next case, where a man accuses AMC theater in Arizona of racial profiling. In 2019, a tense confrontation unfolded at the AMC theater in Awataki, Arizona that quickly gained national attention. A Phoenix man who had gone to the movies for what should have been an ordinary evening suddenly found himself accused of sneaking into the theater through the exit door to avoid paying for a ticket. Theater staff confronted him inside the building, insisting he had not purchased entry. The man, stunned by the accusation, immediately began streaming the encounter live on Facebook, determined to document what he believed to be an act of racial profiling. He insisted he had bought one, even holding up his stub as proof, and urged the staff to review surveillance footage to confirm his claim. Just >> came up to me out the blue from coming to the bathroom and said that I didn't pay and didn't have a ticket. So what so so what you guys had to say to me now? >> So >> So what's the deal? >> These guys said you didn't buy a ticket. Do you have a ticket? >> Ask him ask him why he say that? >> I don't know why I said >> why. Why you say I didn't have a ticket? >> Sir, you walked in the exit door and my staff warned me that they did not sell you a ticket that you didn't get your ticket. >> That's this what you're saying now, right? >> Yes, that's what I'm saying. >> You're 100% sure of that. >> I am sure. Nobody's scanning. >> All All the staff is 100% sure of that. All the staff is 100% sure of that, right? Would you hold this? I'll put it. So >> now I see the manager now. >> I am the manager, sir. >> Who's your boss? >> This is a ticket that was >> Who who who's your boss? >> Does look like it was purchased. >> Who is your boss? >> No. No. >> No. What does that ticket say on there, sir? What does it say? >> It was indeed. But you should have shown me the ticket. >> No, I shouldn't. You just came with me out the blue. He He automatically assumed >> walked in the exit door. >> I didn't walk in the exit door. I went to the bathroom and got a refill. >> My staff said they had not seen you. They saw you walk in the exit door. So I I just asked you for a ticket, sir. >> And then you know how mad I am right now. You know how embarrassed this is? You know how embarrassed this is? And I told him I said, "Go check the video tape, then come back to me." >> Listen, you know, it wouldn't be embarrassing at all. There's nobody going to go to Couldn't go check the video. The man described the ordeal as embarrassing, noting how humiliating it was to be pulled aside publicly without evidence. Police officers arrived but made it clear they had no role in deciding whether he could stay. >> Man, this is embarrassing for somebody to point to me out the blue. This is embarrassing, man. >> This is embarrassing. And now you produced a ticket talking about how embarrassing. But I told him to go check to you. What is it? >> Somebody come to you out the blue. I said, "Get out of here. You came out. You came out." I said, "No, I didn't." I said, "Quit." I said, "Get out of here. Quit playing with me, man." >> They should show the damn thing. All you got to do is show the ticket. That's it. >> Man, it don't matter if I said I said go check the tape. You should be You should be >> Okay, listen. >> Shouldn't they be 100% sure if they blaming somebody? >> Shouldn't they be 100%. >> I don't That's my not my place. >> I'm just saying. >> So, >> shouldn't you be 100%. >> Listen, hear me out for a second. couple of options. It's private property. If they want you to stay watch a movie, you're more than welcome. It's up to them. If they want you to leave, that's up to them. If you want a refund, that's up to them. We're out of it. This is a civil matter between you and them. Not us. There's no crime that we can interpret. >> Who's your boss, man? >> I want to talk to your boss. >> Tell me. I'll give you a card. Give me a card, man. >> It's not a You see how this is, man? >> You see this? >> Shut up. >> Shut up. catch you later. >> Shut up. >> All right. >> And I want a refund. >> No, we're not giving you a refund. You violate our code of conduct. You turn your flashlight on the theater and it says on the back. >> You see this man? >> You see this, man? >> I'm calling the news right now and and I'm sending them this tape right now. Okay. You going to look like an idiot. and he kicked me out. Don't want to give me a refund. He saw the ticket that I have. Give me on my ticket stop. >> This is the ticket stop that proved that I paid to get in here. They explained it was a civil matter between him and the theater since it was private property and staff had the right to ask him to leave regardless. The man refused to quietly back down, declaring that he would take the issue to the media. On May 25th, 2022 at California State University, Long Beach, a sociology professor found himself locked out of his own office and turned to campus police for help. When the responding campus officer arrived, he asked for identification before unlocking the door. The professor admitted he couldn't provide his campus ID, explaining he had recently traveled, lost it during the trip, and had yet to replace it. Hey, how are you? >> Oh, it's all good, man. Do you have your campus ID with you? >> I don't. That's the thing. Um, if you go inside if you go inside my office, I have my I lost my ID. I was traveling this weekend, but here's my credit card. The >> Do you have a campus actual? >> I don't. I lost it. So, here's my >> Okay. >> But if we go inside my office, my door is open. This the front the the office door is the the hallway is locked but my office is open right now. We go in there. >> Do you have a Do you have a >> I can give you my ID number. >> Do you have a Did you call your dean? >> Uh my dean though my dean's left and he's not here. >> Okay. You would I would give call cuz >> cuz here here's the thing. So I I can't unlock it without any photo ID. >> And technically like technically before I'm not I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, >> but technically before we get called it has to go to the dean first. You have to come respond. cell phones in there. I don't have anything. >> Yeah. I I mean, unfortunately, I >> You wouldn't be locking unlocking my door. You'd be locking the hallway. >> Any form of photo ID in there? >> I don't. Oh, my in there. I have pictures of myself and my family. If you can see that, I promise you'll see that. >> I promise you that. You'll see it in there, dude. I promise you. You'll see my pictures of me and my kids and my wife in there. >> Just look. You just got to open up the hallway. My door's unlocked. I just forgot my keys when I used the restroom. My car is parked right here. This is my car, my Honda Accord. I'm here. Just I promise you I'm not lying. Just open the door. I'll show you any other form of >> I don't I was traveling to Jersey and I lost my ID, you know. I'm sorry. >> Okay. And your photos are in there. >> Yeah, my everything's in there. I promise you you'll see everything that I'm not not I know this sounds looks weird like got no IDs, you know, like but I promise you once you're in there you'll see you'll see my which one is it? >> Okay. You do you know your dean's phone number? What's up? >> Your dean's phone number? >> No, I don't. Let me let me clear this with my supervisor first. Okay. >> Yeah. The officer, however, followed campus policy without official identification or verification from a dean. He was not authorized to open the office. He contacted his supervisor for guidance and the answer came back firmly. No ID, no access. The officer calmly explained the decision, apologizing that his hands were tied. The professor grew increasingly frustrated. Hey, so I know Chad already um already said the whole CSO thing, but I was already 7 this thing. Um, so he says he's a staff member. Locked his [ __ ] in the office. No ID, no nothing. It says he has photos. He Yeah, photos of himself in the office. No. Okay. So, all right. I'll I'll let him know. Yeah. Yeah. He said um Yeah, he didn't have any photo ID or campus ID or nothing. pieces like all the shit's in there. So, yeah. Yeah, I get I Yeah, that's Yeah, that's why I thought I'd run about it. Run it through you first. Okay, I'll tell him that. He He's got He's got Well, he's like he's like, "Hey, I lost my ID and shit." And so, I guess so. Okay. All right. All right. Bye. Hey, so I talked to my supervisor and he said no go unfortunately. So how am I supposed to get in there? They don't have anything to do here. >> Are you >> Yeah, my door is unlocked. My office >> I I I totally get it. I explained to him the circumstances, but unfortunately he won't he won't let me go in there. >> So how do I do what I do? >> Do you have any way to contact anybody? Call a phone. Your dean or you have to get in that car. Your car's here. Get to a phone. Yeah. Like I said, man, as much as I'd like to help, I talked to my supervisor and he said no go with no staff ID and anything. So, yeah. >> M. >> Yeah. Officer Luke. >> Sure. If I was a white professor, you'd be [ __ ] I'm I'm sorry. >> I'm sure you are. I'm sure that's the case. If I was a white professor, you'd be fine with this. And you want to smirk about it, but you know it's true. >> You wouldn't have no problem opening the door for a while. >> I'm I'm sorry. I literally called you know that's true, man. That's the part that I'm professor. I'm in there. My doors I locked the door accidentally. I went to you to the restroom. You guys can't open the door. >> I called. Like I said, I called >> the supervisor. That's the part. But all right. >> Okay. Well, I'm sorry about that. Take care. >> Despite the officer's attempts to deescalate, the professor left feeling wronged. Convinced race had played a role in how the situation unfolded. The footage released later by the police union reignited debate about racial profiling, fairness, and rigid campus procedures. But hold on your seats because this next case is more shocking than the others. On October 29th, 2018, tensions escalated in West De Mo, Iowa, when a black campaign worker canvasing for Representative David Young's re-election campaign was arrested after a confrontation with local police. The man had been going doortodoor distributing campaign literature, a common practice during election season. However, a resident called police to report a suspicious person walking through the neighborhood, prompting officers to respond. Is our caller in the area still or are they a local resident? Okay, while I'm utiling the subject, I didn't know if the caller I wanted to meet so I could get a better description or last known direction of this unknown person. This is loud. That's a good point. [Applause] Heat. Heat. Where are we off? >> 3809. Traffic >> 389. Grand Prairie Parkway in UV with Edward Henry Union 7985. We'll go with that male in the 50 700 block of Aspen away. >> Hi sir. Yes, I'm offering the West Mo Police Department. Um, the reason why I'm talking to you today is someone called in about you. Are are you just handing out flyers? >> What What am I doing wrong? >> I didn't know. People were concerned. >> Yeah. Concerned for what? >> Their neighborhoods. >> Hold on. Hold on one second. >> Hold on one second. Rick. >> So, it's not a big deal. >> Yeah, I know. I'm just trying to figure out what we were concerned about. Well, in West De Mo, we have a soliciting ordinance. So, if you're knocking on people's doors, >> Yeah. soliciting is what? Offering services. >> Yeah. >> I'm not offering a service. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, with that being said, I'd like you to leave me alone, sir. I have not broken any laws. >> Well, I'm still doing an investigation cuz if you're recording me, m I'm still recording, too, so it's okay. >> Investigating what, sir? >> A suspicious person. They called in about you. >> Okay. >> Do you have your You have an ID with you? >> No, I don't. >> Do you have your name? Do I have your name? No. Am I under arrest? >> No. >> Okay. >> Well, I'm investigating >> under arrest. Then you have no reason to be talking to me, right? >> I sure I can actually. Yes. You're a suspicious person. Someone called in about >> suspicious. How? >> Someone a neighbor a neighboring called over here. So, I don't understand why you're being difficult about this. >> I'm not being difficult about anything cuz I haven't done anything out of the way. >> Okay. >> So, with that being said, I'll go about my business. >> Okay. I'm not done with you yet. You're not free to go. >> Have I done it? Have I broken any laws? >> 55. Can you send me one this way, please? >> I haven't broken any laws, sir. >> I'm talking to you. I'm not done. I'm I'm investigating a suspicious person. >> You have a nice day, sir. >> Stop. Under arrest. >> Stop now. >> For what? >> I can detain you. Stop. >> For what? >> Because you're not listening. I'm investigating a suspicious person. Stop now. >> Sir, have I have I broken any laws? >> Stop. >> Tell me what laws I broke. >> I told you to stop. >> I don't have to stop. >> Yes. >> No, I don't. >> Either arrest me. Tell me what laws I broken. >> Can you step step it up? He's being uncooperative and trying to walk away from me. He won't identify himself as a suspicious person investigating. >> I I know my right. And with that being said, if I've not broken any laws, you have no reason to detain me. >> Stop. >> So, I'm going to ask you one more time to >> I'm going to tell you to stop >> for what? >> Because I'm talking to you done this wrong. >> I just told you I'm investigating who you are. >> You're harassing me. >> 5700 block of Aspen. >> Stop. I'm telling you to stop and I'm not going to tell you again. >> And what will you do if I don't stop? >> I will detain you. >> Detain me for what? >> You're not listening. I'm doing an investigation of any suspicious person. >> A suspicious person? Have I broken any laws? Doesn't it doesn't that's not the point. >> Any laws? >> Someone called you and it's a suspicious person. >> Okay. And you could be a suspicious person. Mr. Ray, >> really? >> I feel like you're a suspicious person. >> How would I be suspicious? >> You look suspicious to me. >> Okay. How would that be? I'm going to mark >> You're a white man. >> You're suspicious to me. >> I'm suspicious to you because I'm a white person. >> Yeah. With a gun. You're suspicious to me. >> No. >> No. Get away from me. I haven't done anything out of the way. You can't arrest me. >> When approached, the officer asked what he was doing. The campaign worker explained that he was canvasing, but the officer pressed further, citing the city's soliciting ordinance and suggesting the man needed to identify himself. The canvaser calmly replied that canvasing for political campaigns did not fall under soliciting and therefore did not require a permit. The officer, however, continued the questioning and asked for identification. The man declined, saying he had done nothing wrong and did not have to provide ID when not suspected of a crime. The exchange grew tense. The officer insisted he was investigating a suspicious person based on the call, demanding compliance. >> Arrest me right now if you want to. >> Here, turn around. Put your hand back. >> For what? >> Because you're not Stop. Turn around. What have I done? >> Because you're not listening to me. >> What have I done wrong? >> Get your hand Get the phone out of my face. Because you're not I'm investigating a suspicious. >> What have I done wrong? I'm not suspicious. I haven't done anything. I'm walking up the street. I haven't done anything wrong. I don't have >> neighbors have called on you, >> sir. I don't care if anyone has called on me. This is not your This is not their area. The street. >> This is actually This is a public roadway. So, this is >> Okay. Okay. Okay. It's a public roadway. That means that I have the right to be on this roadway. Yes or no? >> Everybody has a right to be on the public roadway. >> So, I am not a >> But you don't have a right to be on anybody else's property or curlage. >> I'm not on anybody's property. >> Why would anybody Why would someone call it in? That's that's their concern. >> So their concern, >> listen, I'm I'm recording right now because this police officer just walked up on me saying I'm a suspicious person and he was going to detain me for whatever reason that >> because you're not listening. >> Listen, sir, I don't know how y'all do things here, but I'm >> Where are you from? >> Record it. So So could you please get off the phone while I'm trying to record? Thank you. >> Sir, listen to me. Listen to me. I I work for somebody that will have Look, listen to me. I work for somebody who will get on your mother. So, I'm going to ask you one more time. >> Okay. Actually, using obscinities in front of public people as a crime, >> sir. Listen to me. I'm going to tell you one more time. >> I don't care who you work for. >> You don't care who I work for. The person I work for pays you. So, I'm going tell you one more time to get away from me. Leave me alone. >> You're going to leave me alone. Get away from me. >> Yeah. He's still walking away from me, being uncooperative, and refusing to identify himself. I >> don't have to do anything. I don't have to identify myself. You don't have to do anything. If I've not broken any laws, I don't have to. >> What's down? We were 58th and then I asked you to leave me alone. >> If I've not broken a law, you have no reason to detain me. You If you had a reason to to detain me, you would have detained me already. >> I can't actually. Yes, I can. >> For what? >> Because you're not listening to my directions. You're not following. Turn around right now. >> Sir, >> turn around. I'm done. >> Sir, you're going to arrest me. >> I'm detaining you. >> For what? For what? >> Be resistive. >> For what? For what? >> Because you're not listening to what I'm saying. Do not be resistive towards me. All right, >> I'm back to my car. >> All right, you you you've done it. >> I'm detained. >> You have done it. >> Yep. >> You're you're a fool. You are a real fool, sir. >> And could you tell me what I am handcuffed for? >> Yes. Because you wouldn't follow You wouldn't follow my directives. >> Your directives? And what were your directives? >> I told you to stop numerous times. >> And I asked you for what? And I ask you to identify yourself because you're I'm investing a suspicious person. Someone had someone had worried. >> Worried about what? Have I Have I tried to enter anyone's property? >> They were concerned. So, yes, you're going to >> Okay. No, I have not. Show me. Show me evidence where I've entered someone's property without them knowing. Show me everything. >> There was two calls on you about doing entering people's areas of their of their house. >> No, they weren't. Listen to me, sir. I can tell you for sure I have not done anything wrong. I have not broken any laws. So if I I suggest you let me out of these handcuffs immediately. >> Could you Could you tell him to to take me out of these handcuffs? I have not broken any laws. >> Okay. Did you stop when he told you to? >> No. He kept walking away. >> Then that's interference. So you're under arrest. >> Interference for what? >> Interference. You disobeyed a lawful order. >> You were sitting right there and I told you to stop four or five times to identify yourself because there are suspicious person car. And I'm investigating that. >> Investigating what? I have not done anything. Okay. >> You can't just run up on on anyone and just say, "Hey, you're you look suspicious." >> Okay. He told you to stop. He didn't. >> And we had calls on you like I told you. >> You're practicing stop and frisk right now. I've not >> No, you're under arrest. So >> under arrest for what? >> Under arrest for what? What have I done wrong? >> You didn't identify yourself. You didn't stop when we asked you to. >> Okay. Okay. >> This is what I'm asking. That's all I'm asking for is your name and date of birth, man. All right. Okay. >> So I can log someone. >> Okay. The canvaser argued back, asking repeatedly what law he had broken. "I haven't done anything wrong." "I'm walking on a public roadway," he said, pointing out that residents concerns were not proof of illegal activity. The officer, growing frustrated, ordered him to stop and threatened detention if he continued to walk away. As the standoff intensified, the officer eventually placed the campaign worker in handcuffs, citing his refusal to stop and provide identification. The man accused the officer of bias, pointing out the racial dynamics of the encounter. On January 29th, 2021, police had been called to the store in Westchester, Ohio, after receiving a report of a shoplifting suspect. The description was clear that a white man in his 30s wearing a dark green or gray Carheart jacket with a red hoodie underneath. Despite this, officers Tanner Sendis and Tim Mintenbaw stopped 60-year-old Eric Lindsay, a black man who was dressed in an orange down coat and a brown and tan scarf, clothing that bore no resemblance to the suspects. He insisted he had just entered the store minutes earlier and pointed out that his jacket was bright orange, not remotely close to the tan or green description the officers mentioned. >> Okay. My additional information calls advising they save the cutting performance and not approaching clear 21 >> 11 is it 10 or check out 10 >> now in aisle 14. I'm going to go from inside. suspect's headed towards the front the main grocery store. >> I was like, can I get a back location? Where's aisle 10? I saw him. He was like nearing me. Watch. Perfect. [Music] Hey, man. >> How you doing, man? Take your hands out of your pocket. >> How you doing? I'm >> doing well until I got stopped. What's up? >> Yeah, LP called and said that you were concealing some items inside your jacket. Who do I sue? Huh? Who do I sue when you don't find [ __ ] Hey, come get this film. >> Well, that's who I know. We're just trying to figure it out. Like I said, we got a call. I hope you didn't call somebody. Okay. Say got a brown jacket on. Okay. I walked in here 5 minutes after you guys walked this. I know you walked here. So, how can feed me? I have no idea. >> Get this on the film, please. >> That's again, that's why we're here trying to figure it out. >> What do you want? >> What do you want me to do? >> What do they say? A black man did it. >> No, sir. >> What did they say? >> Someone here asking you guys listen. >> This isn't tan. What am I listening to? What am I listening to? This isn't tan. >> It's not okay. Sir, >> it's not okay. >> You have any items? This is orange as any items. >> Hell yeah. I got items in my jacket. >> Well, it was walked in here with a you guys. >> Well, that's not what we been told. >> Hold on, man. I'm getting this one. Exactly. >> Exactly. Get >> It's not okay. >> Well, again, we're just talking about what? >> No, you got to hold my ad. >> I'm listening. >> My name is Officer. I'm listening. I'll give you my business card. Okay. I'll give you my business card. >> Frustration mounted when one of the officers asked if he had items hidden in his coat, to which Lindsay sarcastically responded that the only things inside were what he had brought in with him. While this was happening, another officer in the store detained the actual shoplifting suspect, a white man in his 30s wearing an olive green coat. At that moment, it became clear that Lindsay had been stopped for no reason other than fitting a biased assumption. A Meer manager later admitted to Lindsay that it was a big mistake, acknowledging that nothing about his appearance matched the report. >> It's a problem. >> No, you don't. You don't understand until you get the skin color. myself. >> Well, that's why I was like, is it I mean, he's he's got this tan coat on that. That's what we're saying. >> Yeah. >> Where is he at right now? Where's your guy at? >> Oh, [Music] where where they at? >> Trying to locate the suspect. This is the description here. >> I'm going right over here. Does he know where that's straight? >> I have I have no idea. >> That's straight ahead. >> Yeah. 11. It was a again just information. [Music] Are you still going to stop him or done or >> I don't know why you ask me that question. >> Well, how do you help me find community? >> And you have my information, sir. If you wish to contact the department and speak to my supervisory, >> are you the manager at at the moment? >> Yes. >> Who was the one that was doing this reporting or asset protection? >> Tiffany sales, white men or black man? That's the first description that comes up because that's the easiest thing to be determined. >> Yeah. So they they were getting they were getting clothing description. >> He didn't have black pants on. >> Damn. >> You know how stupid you guys look. >> I understand you're upset and I do apologize. I'm serious. >> Yes. help. >> No, but there is a mess. I don't I don't drink uh furniture and So yeah, we're we're going to go take care of this gentleman. If it's you have my information, if you need to talk to me any further, my supervisor, we can do that. And I guess his supervisor, >> his name is Sergeant House. I can write his name down. >> He's just walked around in the corner, man. First thing he did was call me. I'm [ __ ] up. 60y old black man works every damn day in my life. Got a closet and a mask >> and walked in after they did and I told him that I I would be affected. >> The uh just so you know, the suspect did have a cutting instrument that he was using to cut items in retail. Yeah, >> I'm serious. >> This asset protecting gun. >> So, this guy told you that that was a guy? No, I was as I'm going down this back wall. I can see his mask. Okay. I can see what color he was. >> No, but who pointed >> who pointed this guy? Who brought your attention to this guy? >> He was uh >> Lindsay later filed a lawsuit against both the officers and Meyer, claiming unlawful detention, racial profiling, and emotional distress. The charges outlined in the suit included allegations of unconstitutional conduct and failure by the store manager to intervene during the incident.
