Modern policing has a lot of policies, procedures, risk assessments, things like that. The '8s, however, it was a lot more like the Wild West. Stop. I'll shoot you in the back. And not only do you have a gun, you have a stolen gun. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Today, we're watching old episodes of Cops from 1989. Starting with these Florida cops. Things can turn at any moment's notice because of the violence and the weapons that are in the neighborhood and because of the drugrelated crimes the car. You got anything in the car I should know about? You got any drugs or any weapons? Do you mind if I look? Do you mind if I look? Okay. Already the tone is so much different than what we see today. This guy is like non nonsense. Good command presence. Pretty hardcore. I just asked if you got any weapons underneath the seat. What's this? Whoops. What's this? It's called carrying concealed firearms. You understand? You understand? Well, I smell marijuana. You know, I smell somebody smoking marijuana. How's everybody doing? Marijuana is pretty much legal everywhere at this time. The bad people off the street. You don't mind that, do you? It's a game out here. That's all it is. Cat and mouse game. Some days they win, some days I win. That's all it is. Now, what you can do sometimes, you can sit right here and you'll see the white guys come in here and make a right turn on 29 Way to buy their dope 97. The white guys and then when they go down the street, you give them about a minute and you go around the corner and there they are dealing. Came to buy drugs. Well, you know what? I appreciate your honesty. If your license is good, I'll give you a little slap on the wrist until you'll be on your way and then I I don't want to see you around here again. Does that sound fair? No, you're banned. I don't need you. I'm just trying to get these white boys to stop from coming in here. All right. You see me? I'm the only white face in this area besides other cops. You don't belong here. Okay. Wow. Things you don't say in uniform for 100, Alex. Okay. Just sit in the back of the car until we confirm because it might be a warrant for your arrest. You just sit in the back. Relax. Just sit there. Well, we have to get a confirmation number. Not secured. What is What is it for? Violation of probation. Hey, what are you doing? See you later. I can't believe these guys wear all white, too. White is terrible on duty. So dirty. Stop. I'll shoot you in the back. You don't hear that anymore. I don't think you heard that vent. All right. Catching a beating. I don't know what that is. I think it's like a a leather sap or something. Like a piece of lead wrapped in leather used to whack people with. Those are before my time, but I think that's what it is. Maybe somebody can comment below and and let me know. You stay to help. You don't get out of here. I'm going to jail you. I don't care. Everybody's going. Let go of me. I did nothing wrong. I did nothing. Goodness. I did nothing wrong. You bastard. Eat some trunk. My money. I've got money in the car. I guess things haven't changed all that much. You got a hit on this guy. Put him in there. Shut the door. Okay. Can't leave him like that. Oh, getting a little dressed down here from the supervisor. We got into a situation last night where a woman distracting the deputies there. They were trying to be polite and nice to her. Uh Jerry turns around to the woman took off causing me at my old age to chase this man. Okay. Oh my god. Not very far, mind you. If we had have secured this individual initially, we wouldn't have run into the problem. I can see why the show was wildly popular. I remember I was a kid in the 80s, but I remember my dad was a cop and all of his friends used to watch it and they loved it. It is a fun a fun watch. One of the reasons why with Linda is because she's a police officer. Also, right here's a prostitute. She's going over to a little motel. I think she's in a bunch of episodes and your friends in your high heels on federal on state road 7. I don't have a driver's license. Where's your ID? I don't even have ID. I see you stopped in traffic or even so much as turning around for vehicles. You're going to jail. Get off the road wearing dressed like that. Where do you live? No nonsense. Well, give me some ID then, baby. It's 2465. Oh, I can tell you've done this before. I've never hit I've beened. I've never been for prostitution. Got herself a sweet permanent. Get off my streets. You're banned. I like to take it one step at a time. You have to remember when you're when you're when you're dating another woman that has a gun, you got to be very careful. If your husband gets out of line, you just shoot and then you claim self-def Well, at first it was very scary. I mean, I'll be honest with you. You know, when you when you when you sit down and you say, "I'm getting involved with a woman that already has two children." Uh, obviously you have to care for that person very much to to to get involved. Cute kid in that situation. From the episodes I've seen, I never remember them getting into the cop's personal lives. It's interesting, but I just remember them on the street. So, this is this is a little different. Next, we're going to see the same female officer, Linda, attend a tough domestic call involving a child. This case shows some pretty major changes in how we handle domestic situations like this, especially when kids are involved. 911 assistant emergency. Yes, it is. What's the problem there, ma'am? Well, this little girl ran over to my house and told me that her uh stepfather is whipping her mama, so she wanted me to call. Okay, someone should be there shortly. What's your problem? I just made a move and you want kid take that as a yes or a no. If you want him here, you can stay. If you don't, we can tell them to leave. So, obviously, there's the first major change. They're going to let him stay regardless of what happened. If she wants that a little different now. You don't want him to come back. I don't want him to come back. Why? He been to jail. He's your husband. No, he's not. Okay. He's your boyfriend. You guys just got in an argument. Yeah. I don't want to stay here. Are you pregnant? No. I want to go to the hospital. Why? What's the matter? Would you I want to stay in the hospital. I don't want to stay here. Why do you want to stay in a hospital? You're 7 years old. I don't want to stay here. It's not none of my problem. If he doesn't come back, you want to talk, you said, "How come I need to beat you?" Ma'am, we can't have a disturbance out here. Right. Come on. Go ahead back in the house and tell us. All right. Wow. And she went back in her house and kept quiet. Don't see that much anymore. N call my mom and tell them I'm going to jail. Your your mommy bought him some beer and then he got in a fight. Yeah. Did he hurt you? No. Such a cute kid. My mommy. He almost hit my brother. How old's your brother? About 20 months old. Are you glad that we're taking him with us? I'm telling you right now, you got trespass warnings from me and from her. If you come back here, I'm going to arrest you. Do you understand? That little girl in there is scared to death of you. So, it sounds like the strongest thing they had was a trespass. It doesn't sound like domestic restraining orders were really happening at this time. I think this is the late '8s. Bye, N. Bye. He's not my fault. Do you want him back? No, you're the one wanted to be. Don't worry, Nancy. Do you want him back here? I mean, he gets a little He is very passionate. I don't know. He's on drugs. Yeah. What kind of drugs? I don't know. cocaine, whatever. You're bringing that in the house with these children? No, I don't. If I find that this is going on, I will myself personally contact HRS and they will take these children until you provide a safer environment for them. Okay. So, now obviously police are mandated reporters. This situation would be reported regardless. You couldn't like give her a second chance or anything like that. We would just have to report it to DCF. Thanks a lot. You're welcome. But she's going with him. Oh yeah, you cannot go. Let's go. You can't go with me. Yeah. How about if I drive by and shine my light through the window so you know that I was here? Okay. I'll just come by and check on you. And I'll be back tomorrow when I come to work. Okay. Okay. What was that? Sweet kid. Here. Let me give you one now. Okay. Bye, sweetheart. Nice. Most likely when I go back to that house tomorrow, they're going to let the boyfriend come back into the home. He's the bread winner in the family. He probably provides the money. You're going to see that same man in the house, and that same little girl is going to come up to me crying. Some things never change. Recently, my boyfriend and I picked out an engagement ring, but I can't call the engagement ring until he asks me to marry him. I go and visit it at the jewelry store. I have visitation rights to it until it's paid for. It's good to see some things never change. Um, cops are still not getting paid. This lady is going to see her engagement ring on layaway. Will you marry me? Pop in the question. Huh? Are you serious? I'm dead serious. Will you will you wear my ring? Jared got it out of layaway. I don't believe you. I just engaged. I just got engaged. Congratulations. Just engaged. I did a little digging and found Jerry has appeared on the Doughnut Shop podcast. Here's a clip of him talking about his days on Cops. You know, as you could see on the first episode of Cops, some happened and um they got to film it and um the infamous line, you know, stop or I'll shoot you in the back. I'll never live that down or you know and it's just it's followed me my whole life. After 29 years with Broward, Jerry's now retired from law enforcement and works in K9 training. From publicly available information, it appears the pair did get married but have since both happily remarried. Linda is also retired now and works in real estate. Next up, we'll see how airport security was done a little differently in the 80s. I'm a sergeant in the organized crime division and I'm currently the supervisor of the airport interdiction unit. You know, if I had blonde hair and blue eyes, I'd be okay, right? No. Well, you know, you know what? They don't even have a look anymore. No, they don't. I can't tell a drug smuggler from a girl scout anymore these days. I think you should worry about more people are carrying guns and drugs. You want to lower your voice? You can worry about bonding out of jail this afternoon. You're in an airport. You're in a secure area. Keep your voice down. Damn. My partner, myself, we're narcotic officers. What we like to do is check your bag for narcotics. If you don't have any injection, we can do it right here. I don't have to take anywhere. All right. You sure? How about your other bag? You have any open or happy enough to let him? No. Okay. I swear. Have a good trip. Are you a cop? No. Cuz if I open up that other bag and there's a gun in there, I'm going to have to pull you off the airplane. Have a warrant to do all this and stuff. This is kind of embarrassing. Uhoh. Is your warrant? Now you want a warrant? No, because this is ridiculous. Look at this. Go ahead. You can do it. But that's, you know, I don't like this. This is stupid. That's not your bag. All right, that's fine. It might look like your bag and not be your bag. bags look alike. No problem. You got a couple warrants. It's not your bag. I don't need a warrant. You abandoned the bag. I've actually never really seen this. Um, a couple cops walking up to people randomly at the airport asking if they can search their bags. Wonder why they don't use dogs. Who is that? Your bag? Is this your bag? Is this your bag? I'll stop searching if it's your bag. Yeah, it's my bag. Well, now it's your bag. You are not. Get that out of there, please. You are not under arrest. You're no longer free to leave. You are in my care and custody. All right. Put your hands behind your back. Why is this Put your Don't Don't Don't even think about it, mister. Put your hands behind your back, mister. Wait a minute. Don't see this coming. Stupid. The fighter. Just bring your arm behind you. All right. All right. Get him down. Watch that bag. Hey, she jumped right back in there. I'll give that to her. Okay, got his arm. Yep. H I'm sorry. I didn't think it was going to go so bad. She's a little worse for the wear. With the proper necessary assistance and if the property above described be found there to seize it and to portions in the unlawful possession thereof, leaving a copy of this warrant and receipt for the property taken and prepared and return this warrant cocaine. about 6 ounces. A little blow there. Possession of a stolen firearm, no less. What else are you going to do? So now you have 6 ounces of cocaine. And not only do you have a gun, you have a stolen gun. I like how casual it is. It just seems like it'd be fun to be a cop then, honestly. And also, all the cops seem to have like Northeast accents. So I guess that's still a thing. A lot of people from the Northeast go be coppers down south. Next up, we'll see the drug task force execute a sting operation that really required some out of the box thinking. We're to put the dogs in the box. Frank, you a dog? Carmine, you a dog? And you a dog. Get inside the box. Where's Jimmy? Right, Jimmy? You'll be the seller. Just pull up. Try to buy a rock from them. Okay. Quick as they buy. Quick as they sell it to you, hit the horn. The dogs will jump out and run them down. Okay. I think if we do this thing right, we can fill up the truck tonight. Sounds good. All right, let's go. All right. Wow. El Camino or something like that. Okay, we got you cover. Okay. Hey, I see one right now that's going to come up. Never mind. Don't let him get out. Get away from us. All right, man. Fell for it. All right. There, man. Here come the dogs. Oh man, that's great. One day we can go out look for the street dealers, the next day the buyers. It's just a different a different type enforcement every day. Hold it right there. Bit of a chokeold there, buddy. It's a no no in the future. On your stomach. Hands on your head. Good job, bro. Good job. You coming in the hotel box? Come on out. Another satisfied cut. There he is. Come on. Crack in the box. Hey, man. Was that good or what? Put him in the box with them. Okay. Come on. Hey, did they get you good? Come on, man. Out front. It's crazy, too. None of these guys in the task force are wearing bulletproof vests that I could see so far. How much you want to bet there's not cocaine in that bag? I see ain't no cocaine in that bag. How much you want to bet? How about your freedom? No cocaine. That's a bet. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. These guys are pumped. All right. All right. Put your hands on you. He still got his dope. They're having the best time. No one's having a better time. Okay, partner. You all right? Yes, sir. All right. literally high-fiving in the streets. Okay, bad guys, listen up. First of all, is anybody here innocent? I didn't think so. Just taunting the prisoners. Much lighter on the customer service aspect of the job in the '8s.
